About me: My name is Ashley Waddell, and I’m originally from the rolling hills of East Tennessee. A Tennessee fan at heart, I came to fall in love with Alabama. During my undergrad at Samford, my outlet for stress became singing in the A Cappella choir. I love music, football, food and church, so there was no better place for me to have settled than Birmingham, AL. I am currently in my second year of pharmacy school at Samford’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy and serve as my chapter’s Patient Care Projects Coordinator. If not pharmacy, then what? Before I decided to go to pharmacy school, I was dead set on becoming a pastry chef. If I’m being honest, there’s a part of my heart that still wants to open a bakery. As a result of this, my new outlet for stress has become baking. My friends actually look forward to exams because they know desserts are coming! Interesting Facts: I’m allergic to cinnamon, I only eat the tops of cupcakes and muffins, and I watch Boy Meets World every morning before class. I’m pretty sure my whole day would be a loss if it didn’t start this way. January 2013 Post-MRM About me: I am originally from Tarpon Springs, Florida and obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance before starting pharmacy school. I am currently a second year student pharmacist at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy (Gainesville Campus), and have really loved the experience so far! I enjoy music, sports, my family, any activity outdoors (water skiing, running, hiking, snow skiing) and friends. If you are ever in Gainesville, let me know! If not pharmacy, then what? When I was younger, I always wanted to be a fashion designer or architect. I think I would also enjoy being a chef, music teacher, or medical doctor. Interesting Facts: I have two brothers and two sisters. Growing up, I competitively figure skated. I have played piano since I was 4 years old. I want to visit all 7 continents before I die. We are proud to present our Region III Post-MRM newsletter! As your regional officers, we desire to develop a close relationship with each chapter this year. We are here to answer any pending questions you may have, increase communication ability between chapters, stimulate chapters with policy enthusiasm and provide reminders on upcoming due dates for ultimate chapter success! For those who were unable to Raleigh, NC, we wanted to use this opportunity to introduce ourselves to you. Region III APhA-ASP Newsletter About Me: I was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. I received my Bachelor of Science in Animal Science with a minor in Business Administration and Nutrition from North Carolina State University. I decided to expand my horizons westward in moving to the bustling metropolis of Johnson City, Tennessee to attend the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University. If not pharmacy, then what: If this pharmacy thing doesn’t work out, I would aim to pursue a career in graphic design. Throughout high school, I created, compiled, and sold an expansive portfolio of fine art works and photography. My love of design remains as a hobby. Interesting Facts: Since the age of 7, I have ridden and competed horses up and down the east coast in the Hunter/Jumper discipline. Since the 3 rd year of my undergrad studies, I have been a licensed judge and steward of these types of horse shows. Raleigh Rewind!

On November 9-11, 2012, over 500 student pharmacist representing 7 states and over 30 chapters gathered together in Raleigh, North Carolina for a

weekend of learning, networking, voting and fun!

Student Workshop Sessions

Throughout the weekend, student pharmacists were provided opportunities to participate in various sessions such as “Make Your Mark”, “Professionalism in Action”, “Transitions…Your Future in Pharmacy”, and the APhA-ASP Leadership Training Series. By the end of the weekend, student pharmacists had been challenged, inspired, and formed new relations.

Many policy proposals were discussed and passed during the House of Delegates session. It was exciting to see so many student pharmacists passionately discuss ideas and proposals that could impact the future of our pharmacy profession. More information pertaining to the passed policy proposals will be provided in later updates beginning January 2013.

Career Exposition Student pharmacists also had the opportunity to explore potential

career options and network with various employees and companies at the Career Exposition, rounding off an outstanding weekend!

Friday Night Social – “Party Like It’s 1999”

The Friday night social at MRM proved to be a rousing and memorable time for

all! Students crowded together in 90s themed outfits playing 90’s games with

old and familiar songs playing in the background. Students excitedly collected

raffle tickets as they played with hopes of winning one of the many sought

prizes! In the room next door, the exciting “Glow Zone” provided students the

opportunity to show off their 90’s dance skills! It was truly a night to remember

and a great kick off to an amazing weekend!

Policy Standing Committee Initiatives

The National Policy Standing Committee is a body of student pharmacists responsible for taking specific actions on those proposals and resolutions passed at the Annual Meeting and Exposition. Your SPAN liaisons will receive monthly updates from this Committee with details about how you can take action and

participate in those initiatives.

Generation Rx Reports are due January 5,

APhA-ASP Winter Campaign:

Winter is Cold…But Advocacy is Hot!

As the days get shorter and the air chills, now is the time for student pharmacists to take action to

responsibly change the profession. Our professions’ positive progression over the last

several years is on track to continue and increase to meet the challenges and opportunities of health care reform. Take action now to help APhA and

our profession.

The APhA Political Action Committee (APhA-PAC) is an essential entity to protecting our role in the

healthcare team and ensuring the continued progress of our profession. APhA is challenging

each chapter to not only continue promoting political and legislative awareness, but raise at least $100 to support APhA-PAC during these

activities.
