Dear Dear Parents

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Regent News. Our Year 6 children have been very busy this week - some of them in France with Mr Horton, Mrs Chiamaka and Madame Edith, others enjoying the STEM activities organised for them and then visiting the Secondary School yesterday. There is a real end of term feeling around now as parties were held today in Early Years and Lower Primary. The plans for the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony on Monday morning are well underway and we are looking forward to welcoming Year 6 parents to join us for the occasion. Please remember to arrive by 8.30 am prompt on the day. Tickets are still available for the Theatre Group’s performance of Annakiya next week. Please see Mrs Tobi in Reception if you would like some. We would like to welcome Mrs Tobi to our staff at The Regent Primary School. She has joined us to fill the space left by Mrs Temi, who is now working at the Secondary School. I am sure you will all soon get to know her and make her feel welcome. Happy reading...

Bonjour!

The visit to Brittany and Paris is progressing very well and the children are having a great time. We set off from Abuja last Saturday and travelled overnight to Paris. The coach was there to meet us and we drove first to the city of Le Mans, where we visited the museum attached to the 24 hours race circuit. After that we got back on the coach and drove to the village of Gomene and to our base for the first part of the week, Le Fosso. Mike and Hilary welcomed us with snacks and drinks and we got unpacked. Sam and James met us too from the UK.

On Monday we had a lovely French breakfast of croissants and cereal, bread and hot chocolate before getting on the coach and heading off to Dinan. Dinan is a beautiful old town and we all did a treasure hunt round the area. It was designed by Mr Graham and it was tricky!

After lunch we went to the velo rail and cycled along an old railway track on bikes that had been adapted to run on rails—it was a lot harder than it looks and we were all exhausted afterwards! Back to Le Fosso and a tasty evening meal.

On Tuesday we went to the lake and we canoed in the morning and sailed in the afternoon.

On Wednesday we went to a crazy mechanical museum that was fantastic! In the afternoon we went swimming in Loudeac. The pool had a great slide! It was very high but even Mrs Chiamaka and Madame Edith went down!!

On Thursday we walked to the local school where we met some of the little children. The older children were on a transition visit at their secondary school. The little ones proudly showed us their classrooms and their school. Next we had lunch by a lake. After lunch we went to the pub and ordered drinks, in French! When we finally got back to Le Fosso the fun wasn't over as we had a great art activity.

Early Years Farewell Assembly

There were mixed emotions in Early Years on Thursday morning as they held their final assembly of the year.

They said their goodbyes to the Reception class students who will be moving on to Year 1 in September.

They remembered songs they had learned from the beginning of their time in Reception:

Reception R sang a medley of songs from the Sound of Music. Reception S entertained everyone with some Indian rhymes. Reception A performed the Pata Pata dance and song, a traditional song from South Africa.

There was also a special goodbye for Mrs Ward and the children who will be leaving us from this Department at the end of this term.

We will all miss you.

We had galettes and crepes for tea and then we did some Breton dancing and Nigerian dancing.

The holiday has been amazing so far and now we are looking forward to going to Paris.

See you next week.

Year 6 STEM Programme

Meet our Year 6 Scientists, Technicians, Engineers and

Mathematicians. They were given the opportunity this

week to take part in the annual STEM programme

which was organised in collaboration with Engineering

for Kids (engineeringforkids.com/Nigeria).

Team work and problem-solving skills were vital as

they tried to complete their projects……

The Year 6 pupils worked on Robotics Intelligence and Force and have been busy programming robots.

They also designed electric cars as a part of the Electronics and Electrical Engineering section.

The session ended today with an introduction to 3D printing.

It sounds like they really enjoyed themselves!

Chukwudalu Dumebi-Kachikwu 6S

They introduced us to an unexplored part of Science and Technology in Nigeria. I really enjoyed the STEM sessions.

Toyesh Batsa 6R

We made our robots and tested them on a track. It was a tremendous experience. Thank you, Regent.

Paula Ofori 6A

STEM was an amazing experience! I hope they do more STEM in Year 7.

THE REGENT SECONDARY SCHOOL TASTER DAY

YEAR 6 STUDENTS

This is what they thought..

‘’Our visit to the Regent Secondary School? What a

fabulous experience it was! We had a lesson on

chemistry, where we learnt how to separate two

different solids with a sieve. Next was biology where

we identified cells with the use of a microscope. After

that, we had a physics lesson about magnets. We used

magnets to attract iron powder. Last of all was a big

experiment, so big we needed goggles and to be at a

marginal different space away from the experiment. It

was about dumping sodium into water. This caused an

explosion of smoke. I was stunned by the result. The

next thing we did was maths. I felt the maths was

educative. We were learning percentages. After that

lesson we walked to the cafeteria to have a snack to

eat. Overall, the trip was a very educational fun

excursion. I loved it a lot.’’ - Olisa Ibeanu (6R)

‘’Our trip to the Regent Secondary School was

rewarding. When we arrived, we were warmly

welcomed by our former year 6 pupils. After that

welcome, we went straight to a science lab and our

teacher was Mrs Chukwujekwu where we learnt to

separate solids from liquids; then we went to another

science lab where we learnt about cells, tissues and

organs. Next, we went to Mr Inyang’s class where we

learnt the reaction of sodium and water: it exploded.

We then moved on to a physics class where we learnt

about magnetic fields. We progressed well as we went

to a maths lesson. I can say it that it was very

interesting and informative. In summary the trip was

LEGIT.’’ – Michael Kalu-Uche (6S)
