Reflex in Winkelmann Group:Providing quality together
Winkelmann Group and Reflex
By the end of 2014, the Winkelmann Group had nearly 4,000 employees and generated more than EUR 500 million in revenue. The three manufacturing business divisions Automotive, Flow-forming (manufacturing drive elements for aerospace engineering, for example) and Heating&Water which includes Reflex, have more than twelve manufac-turing sites in five countries and twelve distribution companies in twelve countries. With these sales organisations, we are present almost everywhere around the globe.
Heating&Water has its own OEM department where products are developed and manufactured according to the specifications of well-known customers and system providers in the heating industry.
The quality requirements of the major automotive manufacturers in particular have beneficial effects on the other divisions such as Heating&Water, with the result that reliable quality standards are established for these manufacturing lines as well. The “German Engineering“ seal of approval is given to all products provided by this division.
Reflex Winkelmann is one of the largest manufacturers of hot water tanks in Europe and their precision- and efficiently-manufactured tanks are provided to OEM custom-ers as well as, under their own Reflex label, also to distributors and end-customers.

Every year, fossil fuels become more scarce and energy costs increase continuously. We need a new approach in energy politics. The reorientation to trendsetting energy generation technologies such as co-generation or heat pumps is a possible road to take. One building block for the realisation of these objectives is the buffer tanks from Reflex. By decoupling energy provision and consumption, inert boilers can be optimally operated for example, with-out having to face restrictions in utilisation. In connection with solar systems and CHPs as well, Reflex buffer tanks play their aces.

Reflex buffer tanks are designed to the stratified storage mountsprinciple and act like a heating battery. A buffer tank can decouple heat generation and heat consumption—thermally as well as hydraulically. The optimal adjustment of heat generation and consumption is thus possible. Three connection ports at the top for charging and discharging lines and two connection ports at the bottom for the return lines from the heat consumer and to the heat generator allow a multitude of switching options and connection variants. As a matter of course, this functional principle can be also applied to cold-water systems. However, the user must provide a diffusion-tight insulation in this case.

Standard-compliant energyefficiency and more
Figure 1All before mentioned regulations are based on directives which have been implemented in national legislation. For the EU Directives 811/2013 and 812/2013, this is the EU Energy Efficiency Label 2010/30, and the ECO Design Directive 2009/125/EC is the basis for the limit regulations 813/2013 and 814/2013.
Consumers are already used to energy labels for washing machines, light bulbs, TVs and other household appliances: A colour scale from green to red and the indication of the energy efficiency class informs users about the products’ energy consumption. With the publication of EU Directives No. 811/2013 and No. 812/2013 on 6 September 2013 in the Official Journal of the European Communities, energy efficiency labelling is now mandatory in heating engineering as well.
Since 26 September 2015, the manufacturers of boilers, heat pumps, co-generation systems (so-called space heaters), hot water providers and hot water tanks as well as combination heating systems must attach labels to their products. They are also called product labels. Unlike standard product labels which identify only the individual and designated product, the heating industry is required to provide energy labels when offering and selling so-called product packages (space heat-ers, combination heaters or hot water providers, together with additional components of the heating or hot water provision system). In these cases, a package label or label for composite system is required.
In addition to the Energy Efficiency Label requirements regard-ing the environmentally-friendly design of the aforementioned products, the so-called Ecological Design requirements, were introduced beginning on 26 September 2015, which must be uniformly met in all EU member states (EU Directives No. 813/2013 and No. 814/2013). These are, for example, require-ments regarding the products’ energy efficiency (seasonal space heating energy efficiency, hot water provision energy efficiency and heat storing losses) but also limit values for certain emissions such as NOx and noise. Products that are already meeting the limit values which will be in force on 26 September 2017 can be identified with an “ErP ready” symbol.

Calculation of a composite system or system labelMandatory in future: When a heating device is replaced or another component is added (such as a solar installation or temperature controller), you must create, in the quotation process, a system label with the energy efficiency class of the composite system.
Coinciding with the erP Directive to be become effective, Reflex offers you the necessary tools to calculate digitally, that is, most easily, the corresponding system energy efficiency classes. Use the App to calculate and create composite labels for systems comprising components from different assemblies and modules. This includes drinking water systems, heating systems and the combination of both.
This App ensures that you have all necessary values for energy efficiency in time – individually and well structured, depending on the building situation, the devices to be installed and the budget specified. Of course, the actuality of the data at any time is ensured as we execute regular updates via Internet connection.
Via interface, our Reflex ErP App is connected to the German VdZ portal and thus ensures that you have access to the product data of all manufacturers registered with the portal.

The starting point: implementing the EU Directive of 2013. According to this directive, the energy efficiency product label-ling well known from other applications would become reality in heating engineering in the Fall of 2015. In addition to the labelling obligation, energetic minimum requirements would be established for certain products. These products include boilers, heat pumps, solar installations, space heating devices as well as hot water providers and hot water tanks.
A distinction is made between the labelling obligation for an individual product and that for a composite system made up of different components. Considering the Reflex product palette, all heat storage system up to 500 litre nominal volume must be given the appropriate sticker.
Reflex is optimally prepared: ErP ready to the max! Reflex also demonstrates that avoiding heat losses is the decisive criterion
for the efficiency class. In order to meet the high requirements, Reflex ensures that their products have only little heat-holding losses. This can be achieved by implementing different thermal insulation concepts. However, it is also important not to lose track of economic aspects such as the investment expense for the system purchase. Both criteria, the product price and meet-ing the requirements, form a conflict of interests which can beresolved by Reflex, thanks to a high degree of vertical production and long-term expertise in hot water storage design.
Figure 2 shows that, by using different design and thermal insulation concepts, all market requirements for the energy efficiency classes C, B and up to the highest class A can be met for potable water storage systems ≤ 500 litres. We also vary the insulation thickness and the materials used. However, the economic aspect, in particular, relative to investment costs for the overall system, plays an important role.

The label in Fig. 1 is one already created by Reflex that has been shipped with the corresponding product since 26 September 2015.
Figure 2 gives the end user a better understanding of the differences in the individual tank classes and in how the use of a high-classified tank can be financially beneficial.
Although the initial investment cost for a tank with a better energy class is higher, the purchase will usually pay off in just a few years. Not all tanks are capable of meeting the highest requirements as the heat retention losses used for calculating the efficiency class depend on various factors:
1. Tank geometry (tank volume)2. Temperature difference tank/ambient air3. Type and position of heat insulation4. Number, type and position of the connections
Because some tanks are used to a very large extent and, hence, are fitted with multiple connections, it is not easy to attain the highest energy class and, at the same time, keep the initial investment costs at an acceptable level for the end user. Our innovative rECOflex heat insulation system is essential for the realisation of the energy efficiency classes shown.

Energy costs per year depending on the energy efficiency class for a 300 Liter hot water storage tank
16
During manufacture, the closed-cell PU foam forms a very large number of microscopically-small cells. The wall thickness of these cells is so low that heat conduction is drastically reduced. In addition, the closed-cell structure prevents convection which also ensures that only little heat loss is allowed. The gas contained in the cells is, similar to air, a poor thermal conductor which also contributes to a reduction in tank heat losses. The storage container is fully covered with rECOflex. Our rECOflex insulation system thus ensures over a wide area that precious energy remains in your tank. Material class to DIN 4102 is B2.
For drinking water tanks with > 500 litres and the entire buffer storage product range, we offer high-quality polyester fibre fleece material in 100mm insulation thickness. For tanks with > 1,500 litres, we use 120mm fleece material. The removable insulation combines high-quality insulating properties with simple installation and sophisticated design. Cover and bottom of the tank are also insulated generously. The precision fit of the fleece material prevents the so-called chimney effect which would cause heat losses due to convection.
As part of the Winkelmann Group, Reflex has one of the largest production lines for enamelled hot-water tanks in Europe. It is our objective to support installing specialist fitters, planners and operators in their individual selection of components. Nobody can give advice more independently than Reflex Winkelmann GmbH for selecting the economically most feasible individual products in respect to a relevant result for the system label.
A specially-developed App is provided by Reflex for this purpose, enabling the user to calculate such a composite label. This provides planners and specialist installers with a realistic sense of the effects of individual components on the overall system. Another App function enables the calculation of the amortisation time of two tanks with different energy classes for comparison purposes.
Example:Energy costs per year depending on the energy efficiency class for a 300 Liter hot water storage tank compared with a 100 W light bulb.

DETAILS rECOflex
Limiting thermal losses with functional insulation systems.
The new insulation systems for drinking and hot water tanksat ReflexIn addition to the thermodynamic functionality of our tanks, such as the efficient stratification of solar yield, minimisationof thermal loss has our highest priority. Thermal losses mustbe compensated, which costs money. The new Reflex insulation systems significantly reduce thermal losses and are, for this reason, environmentally-friendly and efficient for the end user. Heat losses in tank depend on these factors:
Tank design• Volume• Ratio between height and diameter• Type, number and position of connections and
maintenance openings
Insulating material used• Material properties• Material thickness• Insulation position
As a rule, there are three physical types of heat transmissionwhich transport the stored heat of a drinking or buffer tankinto the environment:
• Convection → Movement of air
• Conduction → Energy flow within a material
• Radiation → Infra-red radiation
Thanks to rECOflex, the new insulation system can be usedvariably and allow the individual adjustment of a tank’senergy class. Thus, we can attain the required C, B and Aenergy classes.
