Reflection November 12, 2017 — Thirty-
second Sunday in Ordinary Time
WIS 6: 12-16; PS 63: 2-8; 1 THES 4: 13-18; MT
25: 1-13
“Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the
day nor the hour.” Christ cautions us often
concerning our sense of conversion and timing. It
has a lot to do with procrastination — that is,
putting something off or delaying something
which needs to be accomplished.
Most of us understand the importance of living
up to Christ’s expectations and living life in a way
to which He has called us. In other words, we
comprehend that we need to be His disciples,
but we seem to find excuses and reasons not to
totally commit to that. That is exactly the issue
Jesus is addressing in today’s Gospel from St.
Matthew, which is essentially the Parable of the
Ten Virgins. Are we truly prepared for the return
of Christ, the Second Coming? In a sense it has
everything to do with death. We may not wish to
think about it but we do know that death is
inevitable, and have we done everything we need
to do to be prepared?
It was St. Augustine of Hippo who said, “God has
promised forgiveness to your repentance, but He
has not promised tomorrow to your
procrastination.” Like the Virgins in the parable,
we cannot wait. Now, this very moment, is the
time for us to do what God has called us to do,
and that is live lives of stewardship in service
and love to others. There are indeed no promises
about tomorrow, but Christ has offered us hope
for eternal life. Have we done everything we need
to do to be ready?
***reflection from the Office of Stewardship and
Development

“The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins” William Blake, 1825
As Brant Pitre writes in Jesus the
Bridegroom: The Greatest Love Story
Ever Told, “when seen through ancient
Jewish eyes, Jesus of Nazareth was
more than just a teacher, or a prophet,
or even the Messiah; he was the
Bridegroom God of Israel come in the
flesh. As the Bridegroom Messiah, his
mission was not just to teach the truth
or proclaim the kingdom, but to forgive the sinful bride of God
and unite himself to her in an everlasting covenant of love. In
the words of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: ‘The entire
Christian life bears the mark of the spousal love of Christ and
the Church.’ (CCC 1617)”
This is relevant to Scott Hahn’s commentary on this Sunday’s
readings, which follows below:
According to marriage customs of Jesus’ day, a bride was first
“betrothed” to her husband but continued for a time to live
with her family. Then, at the appointed hour some months
later, the groom would come to claim her, leading her family
and bridal party to the wedding feast that would celebrate and
inaugurate their new life together.
This is the background to the parable of the last judgment we
hear in today’s Gospel.
In the parable’s symbolism, Jesus is the Bridegroom
(see Mark 2:19). In this, He fulfills God’s ancient promise to
join himself forever to His chosen people as a husband
cleaves to his bride (see Hosea 2:16-20). The virgins of the
bridal party represent us, the members of the Church.
We were “betrothed” to Jesus in Baptism (see 2 Corinthians
11:2; Ephesians 5:25-27) and are called to lives of holiness
and devotion until He comes again to lead us to the heavenly
wedding feast at the end of time (see Revelation 19:7-9; 21:1-
4).
As St. Paul warns in today’s Epistle, Jesus is coming again,
though we know not the day nor the hour.
We need to keep vigil throughout the dark night of this time in
which our Bridegroom seems long delayed. We need to keep
our souls’ lamps filled with the oil of perseverance and desire
for God—virtues that are extolled in today’s First Reading and
Psalm.
We are to seek Him in love, meditating upon His kindness,
calling upon His name, striving to be ever more worthy of Him,
to be found without spot or blemish when He comes.
If we do this, we will be counted as wise and the oil for our
lamps will not run dry (see 1 Kings 17:16). We will perceive
the Bridegroom, the Wisdom of God (see Proverbs 8:22-
31,35; 9:1-5), hastening toward us, beckoning us to the table
He has prepared, the rich banquet that will satisfy our souls.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Baptisms
Are normally scheduled during or after the 5:30PM Mass on
Saturday, or during or after the 11AM Mass on Sunday. The
next baptism preparation sessions will be:
All Classes are 6:00-7:30PM
Wednesday, November 29th
Please contact Eileen Strater in the Parish Office at 765-743-
4652 or [email protected] to register for the baptism
class and/or place your child’s baptism on the parish calendar.
Through the Sacrament of Baptism, God’s children are
welcomed into the Catholic faith family, which most commonly
takes place at a very young age. In this case, it is extremely
important for parents to know what they are asking when they
ask to have their children baptized. St. Tom’s baptismal
preparation program is for first time parents and
godparents. Sessions are offered every other month. Please
see the parish calendar or call the parish office for upcoming
dates and times.
Marriage
Just got engaged? Want to have your wedding here at St.
Thomas Aquinas? Please contact Matthew Andrzejewski in the
parish office at 765-743-4652 or [email protected]
to start the marriage process and to reserve your date on the
parish calendar. Our wedding ceremony guidelines can be
found on our website under the Faith Life tab.
Welcome New Parishioners!
We welcome all who wish to join our parish family. You may
register by visiting the parish office or by clicking on the link on
our homepage at www.boilercatholics.org. We’re glad you are

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Are you or someone you know interested in becoming
Catholic? The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
process is designed for those who wish to become full
members of the Roman Catholic Church. These sessions are
also a great way to learn more about the Church. The
individuals in the process are involved in a journey of faith and
conversion which includes learning about the beliefs, life,
liturgy and apostolic work of the Catholic community. The RCIA
process at St. Tom’s has two distinctly different tracks, and is
geared around the Purdue calendar, with weekly sessions
beginning in September. Participants can expect to receive
Sacraments of Initiation during the Easter Vigil Mass. To
determine which track of the RCIA process will best suit your
needs, or for more information, contact Eileen Strater in the
parish office at 765-743-4652 or [email protected].

Prayers of the Faithful Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our
community and for all who are in need amid mental and physical suffering,
may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you
close wounds, cure illness, make broken bodies whole and free downcast spir-
its. May these special people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us
in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this through the Lord Jesus who
healed those who believed. Amen.
