It was God who brought Jesus to life from the dead. What Abraham was asked to believe (that God would bless Sarah with a child in her old age) was incredible. FEBRUARY 25, 2018THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

I, YOUR GOD, ENTER INTO A NEVER-ENDING COVENANT AND RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU…

Our reading from the Book of Genesis and St. Paul to the Romans, focuses on God’s covenant with Abraham. A covenant is not like a contract that can be broken if one party fails to live up to the conditions of the agreement… a covenant is never-ending. In this case, even though we can and have broken our relationship with God through our sins, God will never abandon or forget us.

For Paul, no Old Testament character exemplified genuine faith better than Abraham, “the father of all of us.” The faith of Abraham is the faith of a Christian. By trusting in God, even when it seems impossible and difficult, God will bless us exceedingly. If we “believe in God who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered to death for our sins,” we will be saved. It was God who brought death to life in the womb of Sarah. It was God who brought Jesus to life from the dead. What Abraham was asked to believe (that God would bless Sarah with a child in her old age) was incredible. What we are asked to believe (that God raised Jesus from the dead and if we believe He will raise us as well) is just as incredible.

If we look at Abraham, we have the perfect example of how to move through Lent. He reminds the penitent that the God who promises forgiveness can be trusted. We are also reminded that to have implicit trust in a faithful God is to recognize that we are saved. Salvation is always a gift, never a reward. This gift is offered to all of us who listen to the teaching of Jesus, change our lives and hearts and believe in Him. The sure sign we have made this leap of faith is to live our lives differently… to care for the outcast, to lift up the lowly, to feed the hungry, to forgive those who have harmed us.

Today, with Abraham, we are put to the test. This is not a test FROM God but a test FOR God. When life happens, when difficulties and struggles appear, when it seems everyone else is getting ahead except me… DO I STILL BELIEVE? DO I SEE GOD IN THE MIDST OF EVERY EVENT and say, “it is good for us to be here”? The error of Peter and the others on the Mount of Transfiguration is their wanting to seize the moment and make present the glory that cannot be fully consummated apart from the cross. Abraham trusted and was blessed. If we trust, we too will be blessed and led to eternal life. As Paul says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not give us everything else along with him?

February 25th - March 18th: The Power of SilenceIn a time when there is more and more noise, and technology and materialism continue to exert their hold on us, Cardinal Robert Sarah presents a bold book about the strength of silence. The world generates so much noise that seeking moments of silence only becomes more necessary. Life is a silent relationship between what is most intimate in man and God. Silence is indispensable for hearing the music of God: prayer arises from silence and returns to silence with ever greater depth.

FINDING THE WAY

Women’s Lenten Day of Prayer, sponsored by the Women’s Association, Saturday, March 10th, in the St. Susanna Room! Ladies of the Parish, join us for a wonderful talk, Finding the Way, given by Fr. Eric about his own continuing conversion (and ours!) and life commitments. Registration: 11-11:30am, then lunch followed by talk and prayer, concluding by 2:30pm. Bread, soup, and salad lunch will be provided. Please register for numbers count, if possible, by contacting: Mary Ann Mushaben, 513-777-9430, [email protected], or Eloise Pitstick, 513-234-9292, [email protected].

Are you looking for a Lenten prayer for yourself and your family? Walk with the Lord each Friday of Lent at 7:00pm in Church. We will pray the Stations of the Cross, walking with Jesus to Calvary and opening our hearts to His loveand mercy.

Our quarterly Name Tag Sunday has been very well received. To continue this outreach, we need your help handing out nametags the weekend of March 10th/11th. This is a great family service project. Sign up on the parish website: www.stsusanna.org/nametagsunday or contact Karen Carter, 513-777-5325, to be a part of our ongoing efforts to build community at St. Susanna.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP MONTHLY MEETINGWednesday, February 28th, 7:00-8:30pm in the St. Susanna Church Undercroft

We’re here for you .. Whether you want to come just for an evening to ask questions or monthly. Please remember, if you know someone who is a caregiver, offer to bring them to the first couple of meetings, as they may be timid about going into a group where they do not know anyone. Call Sharon (509-3278) with questions.

2ND SUNDAY OF LENT, SURPRISING AND MYSTERIOUS.

Who is this Jesus shining before us in dazzling white clothes? The gospel tells us this: law-giver like Moses, prophet like Elijah, beloved Son like no other! He is the one who intercedes for us, who prays for us, who desires beyond hope for us an obediently devoted life now and a final heavenly life to come.• In listening to the Beloved Son, what do I need to hear?• How will this hearing change or better my behaviors?• How will I walk before the Lord these Lenten days doing mercy work?

Let Go and Let God

Piece: The Sacrifice of Isaac, 1511Artist: Raphael Sanzio

Location: Vatican Museums

He who did not spare his own Son… how will he not also give us everything else along with him?

Romans 8:32

For ReflectionAre we willing to lay peacefully within God’s plan, even if it means sacrifice?

Do we trust his plans more than our own? Is there anything more beloved by us than God’s loving plan for us?

Kneeling humbly on the altar is the son of Abraham’s

old age, the promised Isaac. He was the answer to prayer, a commitment by God that, through this child, Abraham would have descendants as numerous as the stars. Yet God was asking him to sacrifice that hope and promise. And Abraham, although surely not understanding, was willing to obey the Father. It represents the supreme test of faith. Abraham is called our Father in Faith for a reason.

Abraham is looking up to God, not focused on the creatures, even as much as he loved his son. We also need to be looking up to God in order to rightly value the things below.

He understands that no godly gift should take God’s place in the human heart—even something

as precious as his God-given child. When dealing with all the good

things God gives us, even those he has promised

and those we love most, we must be willing to

submit to his plans. God doesn’t always make sense to us, and we are painfully aware that his ways are not always our ways.

Isaac is a young boy, but certainly big

enough to put up a fight as his elderly father’s

plans become evident. Yet we see him kneeling

in acceptance of the sacrifice God requests. Although he wants

to understand, he doesn’t make the reason an absolute. Isaac foreshadows the trusting lamb led to slaughter, the ram whose head will be caught in a

crown of thorns, and the Son who will not be spared by the heavenly Father.
