Dear Parents and Caregivers,
All families who were away for the holidays, welcome back. For the rest of us who stayed in
Sydney and were treated to the best autumn weather experienced in many years, the first
week of Term Two has certainly continued the trend. It confirms for me why many people be-
lieve this to be the best time of the year.
This is a very short term (8 weeks) compared to the first term and includes the Half Yearly ex-
aminations in Week 7. The most stress students ever feel at any level is not having sufficient
time to cover the required work for those assessments: so a term for students to get focused
and organised early.
The term also includes the School Ballet production in Week 4. Dancers have been rehearsing
tirelessly in the holidays to be prepared for this event at NIDA.
In Week 5 the High School Drama production of Lorca's Spanish tragedy, Blood Wedding, will
be on. This is a well-known, classic play written in 1932 by renowned Spanish playwright and
poet, Garcia Lorca. It's a powerful piece exploring the themes of love, fate and death, but
most of all the tension between rigid tradition and changing cultural beliefs and passion.
Information on the acquisition of tickets to these two events will follow.

Sam Newton tried out for the Australian Youth Climbing Team in Melbourne last weekend
where he was successful for Lead climbing in the Junior division. He was required to ‘top’ 3
out of 4 very difficult 14 metre climbs on the first attempt and ended up topping all 4. He also
placed first in the Tasmanian Lead Climbing State Championships 2 weeks ago and will be
competing for NSW in the Queensland & NSW State Titles and also at the Oceania Lead and
Speed Climbing National Championships over the next 2 months. A place on the Australian
Team means he will represent Australia at the World Youth Cup in China in November. Incred-
ible Sam, well done.
Yonatan Freund participated in two Karate tournaments. In the Schools and Universities
Championships, representing Reddam, he got a Silver medal, whilst in the Australian Open he
got a bronze, losing the semi-final by flags, but coming back strongly to place 3rd. He has
been selected to participate in his 2nd international tournament, the Oceania Cup to be held
in New Caledonia next month. Impressive Yonatan, incredible performances.

Louis Fontaine and Luc Siboulet have been offered roles in the boys' chorus of Carmen for
Opera Australia, which begins rehearsals in mid-May, with the final performance in mid-
August. So now the two “Kurts” of Sound of Music fame are continuing their very impressive
performance careers in opera. Well done boys.
Kai Mashimo, made it through to the Junior Regional Final of the Rostrum where he received
the Silver medal. A great achievement Kai.
Adrian Zhao competed in table tennis at the NSW Junior Closed Championship, where in the
Under 13 boys’ doubles championship he received the Gold medal.
In the Under 13 boys doubles championship he also received the Gold medal and in the Un-
der 13 boys’ singles, the bronze medal. With these results he has been selected for the NSW
State Team and will represent NSW in the National Junior Table Tennis Championships in Alice
Springs in July.
On Wednesday this week the ISD Touch Football tournament was held. Our Senior Boys and
Girls teams won this tournament not losing a game, as did the Junior Girls team. The Junior
Boys team won three of the four games played, coming second in this tournament. Congrat-
ulations to all our touch players on these fantastic results.
Have a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday and a great week.

On Monday evening, the night before school be-
gan, Kai Mashimo represented Reddam House in
the Regional Finals of the Rostrum Voice of Youth
Competition.
The regional finalists were all winners of their indi-
vidual heats so the competition was extremely
tough. Students were required to present a six mi-
nute speech as well as present a three minute im-
promptu speech.
Kai spoke brilliantly on the topic of the afterlife. The
impromptu speech is always daunting but he
managed well on the topic of “I’d be lost without
it”.
At the completion of a wonderful evening of
speeches with subjects that were wordly, interest-
ing and used language innovatively, Kai was an-
nounced as the runner-up. He received a cash
prize to top off a very successful competition.

SENIOR EXECUTIVE PREFECT SOCIAL
On Wednesday three Senior Executive members attended a prefect social hosted by Killara High
School. The social which was in a suburb far far away was in the theme of Star Wars, a fitting idea
for May the fourth. At the social, the students met and exchanged ideas with Prefects from
schools around Sydney, while at the same time having a great afternoon. Icebreaker games, trivia
and dodge ball were played and by the end of the day, it was nice to see all of the prefects en-
joying each other's company. The Reddam Prefects were the best dressed of all students that at-
tended and one was fortunate enough to be on the winning team of trivia. In the past year the
senior executive has been invited to numerous schools Prefect socials which continue to strength-
en ties with other schools.

Year 11 Drama has been enjoying a busy first semester as they fulfill both their course requirements
as well as developing a full-scale theatre production for the Reddam community. The cast and
crew are staging the 20th Century classic Spanish Tragedy Blood Wedding by Federico Garcia Lor-
ca.
The play is a passionate and lively exploration of love, fate, nature, death, and the individual versus
social constraint. It takes the form of Greek tragedy in its scale, structure and symbolism. The Year
11 students (joined by cast and musicians from Years 8, 10 and 11) have embraced the task head
on as they bring to the stage their fiery, passionate and complex characters of 1930’s provincial
Spain.
Below are several of the promotional poster designs the Year 11 students submitted for assessment.
During the holidays the students came to school for extra rehearsals. It was on one of these occa-
sions that some of them enjoyed the visit of actor Joel Edgerton who was in Sydney between Inter-
national film shoots. He had wonderful industry stories to share with the students, as well as excel-
lent advice about the importance of taking creative risks in rehearsals; being willing to “fail” so that
we work outside of our comfort zones as actors. Through doing so, those magic moments for the
stage are discovered.
We are so looking forward to the 31st May and 1st June when we can bring their work to an audi-
ence. Tickets will be on sale very soon.
Posters in order of appearance: Nathan Gencher, Brigit Shkolnik, Julian Weiner Angelopulo, Nisha
McArthur, Alex Ulis and Nina Song. Also, some of the cast with Joel Edgerton.
