On September 18th a group from AIA Newark Suburban
toured the Stickley Museum at
Craftsman Farms in Morris Plains, NJ. It was a beautiful
early Fall morning as everyone gathered on the 35 acre estate
off of Route 10. It is an enclave off of the commercial
road that Stickley had
originally planned as a community and school for
craftsmen. He even went so far as to hire a teacher;
however the project did not go
ahead. The structure built as a clubhouse became the Stickley
residence and the two cottages were used by his
children and their families.

signed up for The Build.

Barkley Architects, also Howard Horii, FAIA will be
signing his new book.

The practice of architecture certainly
continues to rapidly go digital, even if our dream of “paperless practice” remains
elusive…and reams of paper get used during design. The AIA has recently
published a new “Guide, Instructions and
Commentary to the 2013 AIA Digital Practice Documents” which can be
accessed online through this link, or by searching the AIA.org website.
This new guide gives an overview as well
as detailed information about the updated and reconfigured set of Digital Practice
documents that includes AIA Document E203 - 2013, Building Information Modeling
and Digital Data Exhibit; AIA Document
G201 – 2013, Project Digital Data Protocol Form; and AIA Document G202 0 2013,
Project Building Information Modeling Protocol Form.
E203 – 2013 is an exhibit intended to be
attached to an agreement at the time the contract is executed. It identifies the extent
of Digital Data and BIM that will be utilized on a project, and identifies which party, if
any, will have digital data or model
management responsibilities. G201 – 2013 is used to define the Digital Data protocols
and G202 – 2013 is used to document the explicit Modeling protocols. These two
protocol form documents are not part of
the underlying agreement and can be modified and adjusted as needed without
amending the agreements.
While many Architects may not yet be using Building Information Modeling (BIM) in
their practice I still recommend reading through this new Digital Practice guide to
become familiar with the terminology and processes described.
While we are on the topic of Digital
Practice, it is pretty obvious that the availability of tablet devices and cloud-
Professional Practice Notes: Digital Practice
based computing has driven an application
boom, enabling AEC professionals to operate, perform and get access to their
information from any remote location.
For the most part we see mobile devices being used for taking notes during meetings,
to receive and send quick emails; and to view and share documents and images
remotely. Increasingly Architects and A/E/C project teams are expanding the mobile use
of design data; marking up document sets
with revision notes or viewing building models on the tablets, and performing virtual
walkthroughs.
The clear trend in our profession, and in the world in general, is to work remotely and
collaborate using digital data while on the go and in the field. While printed and plotted
drawings are still prevalent for deliverables
and bid documents, fewer Architects are carrying around rolls of drawings as was the
norm in the past, instead we increasingly carry our laptops, tablets and smart phones
to present and share designs digitally. Over time we will not just be viewing information
remotely but also interacting more with our
design data and digital models via the cloud for all project tasks and communications.
So whether you are an early Tech adopter, a
Luddite, or fall somewhere in between these extremes, AIA members and licensed
Architects need to embrace Digital Practice trends to retain a leadership position in the
building design and construction industry. If
not we risk having contractors and “IT systems architects” further encroach on our
traditional professional turf!

Design Awards - Night at the Museum…. Please join us for the 20th annual AIA
Newark and Suburban Design Awards to be held Thursday, October 17 from 5:30-9:30
at the Morris Museum in Morristown.
The evening will begin with members and
guests viewing the project boards against the majestic backdrop of the Museum.
Beginning at 5:30 pm, the Museum's atrium will be the setting for an elegant cocktail
party, with guests enjoying a
delicious assortment of foods and wine. At 7:15, our evening's presentations will begin
in the Bickford Theater.
A new feature the Committee is very excited
about this year is the Design Awards Jurors Roundtable. We are honored that our own
Joe Flock, AIA will be lending his moderator talents in a Roundtable discussion with our
guest jurors - Claire Weisz, AIA; Hugh Trumbull, AIA; Stuart Disston, AIA; and Jack
Purvis, AIA.
The topics will begin with the state of
architecture in New Jersey and (who knows
where they will) go on from there.
And as always, audience participation will be encouraged by Joe. Following the
Roundtable, we will proceed to the highlight
of the evening which of course is the presentation of awards, with juror comments
on the projects they have selected.
After the presentations of awards, the party
will return to the Museum Entrance Pavilion where we will enjoy coffee and an
amazing array of desserts, including Death by Chocolate. Can you think of a more
enjoyable way to earn 2 CEU learning
credits? Please register to attend and purchase guest tickets on the Design Awards
page of the Newark and Suburban web site.

Rostrum Format and Frequency to Change Beginning in 2014 the Rostrum will change to a quarterly format. Issues will be published
in April, June, September and December. Stay tuned for information regarding submissions and formatting, as well as opportunities to get involved in editing and publishing. We
continue to be interested in providing great content about the work of our members and to feature a more in-depth reporting of issues that relate to our architects and members.
