The venue was superb, the food was delicious, the entertainment was first class and the company was delightful. Many thanks and congratulations to Ros Reines, John Scott, Patricia Canturi and Liane Rossler for their meticulous organisation of the evening and to Charlotte Dawson from ‘Australia’s Next Top Model who was a most charming and amusing hostess. Indyana Schneider and Jesse Emsalem together with Mark Vincent, winner of the 2009 ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, were quite awe-inspiring as they presented their musical talents. Congratulations to Robyn Borrud who won the beautiful Canturi diamond necklace and thank you to all the families and friends of Reddam House who made the evening so special. On Tuesday the Kindergarten classes enjoyed an excursion to The Sydney Observatory where they learnt all about the weather. Thank you to the Kindergarten teachers for providing the children with such an exciting, educational experience and to the parents who accompanied them. Also on Tuesday the Year 5 and 6 students travelled to the ABC Centre at Pyrmont to listen to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra present a special programme which included pieces by Beethoven and Bach. It is a wonderful experience to listen to live music and the children greatly enjoyed the occasion. Congratulations to Bryana Bailey and Indigo Penn in Year 5 who were both finalists in the “2010 Woollahra Environmental Schools Sculpture Prize”. Indigo’s artwork received a ‘Highly Commended” award while Bryana’s sculpture was judged to be the overall first place winner. This is a tremendous achievement and I am very proud of both of these very artistic girls. Next Wednesday, 3rd November, we will be presenting the K-2 Performing Arts Showcase. All the children in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will participate in the performance and I am greatly looking forward to seeing them display all the skills they have learnt in Music, Drama and Dance. The Showcase will take place in The Adelaide Hall beginning at 5.30pm. Congratulations to Nicole Gallagher in Year 5 who has been selected to compete in the National Club Championships in Canberra on November 29th. Nicole is a highly talented Level 5 gymnast and I wish her all the very best of luck in this highly prestigious competition. The end of year examinations will begin in Week 5 on Wednesday 10th November and the exam timetable will be coming home this week. It is important that the children do not become anxious or stressed about their examinations and I ask that parents re-assure them that this is essentially an opportunity for the teachers to assess their accomplishments and for them to practise exam procedures. A form came home this week requesting information regarding Cultural and Sporting achievements achieved by the children out of school. Please complete this form and return it as soon as possible so that it can be assessed by the Prizegiving Awards Committee for possible inclusion towards Reddam Colours. If you have not yet returned Subject Choice forms please do so immediately as timetables and classes are being presently being organised for 2011. This week Caroline Taylor-Newling, our music teacher, began her maternity leave. We all wish Caroline and Brad much love and best wishes as they await the arrival of their baby son. NSW Health today issued a warning to all parents to be on alert for whooping cough (pertussis) following an increase in the number of school-aged children diagnosed with the disease over the last few weeks.

Whooping cough starts like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, a mild fever and an occasional cough. The cough usually gets worse and severe bouts of uncontrollable coughing develop. This can be followed by vomiting, choking or taking big gasping breaths which causes the "whooping” sound. The cough can last for many weeks and can be worse at night. Some older children and adults just get a cough that doesn’t go away and they may not get any of the other symptoms.

Whooping cough is highly infectious in the first three weeks and can spread easily through families, childcare centres and schools. General practitioners can test for whooping cough and treat early infections to reduce spread to other people.

Anyone who is infectious with whooping cough should avoid contact with babies and stay at home from work, school or childcare until they are no longer at risk of passing the infection on.

For a limited time, a free adult booster is still available for new parents and other adults who care for babies up to 12 months of age. New parents can get their booster from their general practitioner.

Further information can be obtained at http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/factsheets/infectious/pertussis.html

NSW WHOOPING COUGH ALERT

• A Giant squid's eye can be as big as a basketball.

• The stonefish, which lives off the coast of Australia, is the most poisonous fish in the world.

• Flying fish actually glide on wind currents above the surface of the water.

• A newly hatched fish is called a "fry."

• At 188 decibels, the whistle of the blue whale is the loudest sound produced by any animal.

• Dolphins sleep with one eye open.

DID YOU KNOW….?

On Tuesday Kindergarten visited the Sydney Observatory to learn about the weather. We watched a 3D movie called ‘Extreme Weather’. Dr Martin showed us a weather map and talked to us about highs and lows. Then we went on the computer and found out what the weather was like on the day we were born. We used different weather instruments to measure temperature, rain, wind direction and speed, and UV rays.

KINDERGARTEN’S VISIT TO THE OBSERVATORY

Worldwide, the pulp and paper industry is the fifth largest industrial consumer of energy. Producing recycled paper uses up to 70% less energy than virgin paper, as well as using far less water.

According to environmental charities, for every tonne of 100% post-consumer recycled paper purchased instead of virgin fibre paper, we save at least 30,000 litres of water and 3000 - 4000 KWh of electricity, which is enough power to run an average three bedroom house for one year.

Nearly 80% of the world's original old growth forests have been logged or severely degraded.

Always put paper refuse in the recycling bin and try to use recycled paper products when possible.

Congratulations to Bryana Bailey and Indigo Penn in Year 5 who were selected as finalists in the “2010 Woollahra Environmental Schools Sculpture Prize”. This competition was open to both Primary and Secondary students from schools in the Woollahra Municipality. Some of the other schools that had work selected included, Kincoppal-Rose Bay School, Cranbrook, Ascham, Kambala Girls School, Rose Bay, The Scots College and Glenmore Road Public School to name a few.

The theme for this year was “Total Water Cycle Management”.

Special recognition must go to Indigo Penn who was awarded a highly commended with two other artists, for her work entitled “S.O.S, Save our Seas” and huge congratulations to Bryana Bailey for her sculpture entitled “Froggy The Water Catcher”, which was eventually judged to be the winner of the “2010 Woollahra Environmental Schools Sculpture Prize”. This is an excellent result considering she was competing against other students who were many years her senior, including a few from Year 10.

The judges included Mr. John Kaldor AM, Principal of Kaldor Public Art Projects, Ms Monica McMahon, the Curator at University of Western Sydney and Mr. Glenn Barkley, the Curator at The Museum of Contemporary Art.

You can view the winning artwork as well as the other finalists, at Woollahra Municipal Council and you can even vote for your favourite in the People’s Choice Awards.

Bryana Bailey’s Artist Statement

My sculpture relates to the theme “Total Water Cycle Management” because it is a mythical creature that captures the water and then uses it to help the environment.

My sculpture is made of various different types of materials such as metal, plastic and fabric. All of the objects that I used were linked to water and its use in their previous life.

The materials that I used in my sculpture were either found at the tip or in my grandfather’s old shed.
