The dugOuTPhil Ruggles First Team Manager

Hi everyone and welcome to Redding Way where today we are back to league action facing AFC Croydon FC. A Warm welcome to all their players and staff.

We return to the league this weekend after making club history last week by reaching the first round proper of the FA Vase after overcoming high flyers Tadley Calleva in a game in which we romped to a 5-1 victory. Our goalscorers were Charlie Postance (2), Matty Edwards, Alex Lumley and a first senior goal for young Jonny Coates.

The game itself saw us play some very good football in which Tadley could not get close to us. Our flowing style of football created many chances and our forward players were on hand to finish off well. The result saw us hit 10 goals in our last 2 games and it’s nice to see. We are playing with confidence again and it’s showing in our performances.

However, all we have done is begin well and this gives us a good platform to try and progress forward for the rest of the season. The hard work doesn’t stop and starts again today.

AFC Croydon will be another tough test for us. Last year they comfortably beat us on our own turf and away so we want to change that this time round.

Finally I would like to thank Steve, Hillsy, Rowland, Trevor and Micky for their continued support - thanks chaps.

We hope you all enjoy the game

Enjoy the game!

We return to the League programme this afternoon following the FA Vase 2nd Qualifying round tie against Tadley Calleva last weekend.

A day when another historic mark was made, and after our 1st Qualifying round tie against Badshot Lea two weeks previously, the 1-0 success giving us the passage through to the next round, the team then enhanced on that victory with further progress in the competition with a 5-1 win over Tadley Calleva. This put Knaphill into the draw for the 1st round proper, which was made on Monday, and we have been drawn away to Dorking on Saturday 19th October.

Well, two weeks ago saw the League game away to Worcester Park and a 5-3 win, as we returned to the top of the League after a brief absence of a week, and go into today’s game with a two points lead over second placed Staines Lammas. Two successive Saturdays have seen the team notch five goals in each game, and ten goals in eight days delivers a much brighter picture than we had around this time last year. Our entry into the FA Vase this season, has definitely outshone the previous two seasons in the competition when we went out to Horley and Ash United respectively.

Last Saturday’ Vase game brought a first meeting between Knaphill and the Hampshire club Tadley Calleva who play in the Sydenhams Football League(Wessex). The first half of the Vase game was evenly matched, chances falling to both teams, but it was Knaphill who got off to a flier when Charlie

Postance netted after just five minutes. A lead that was short lived as Tadley equalised in the eighth minute.

The second half saw Knaphill dominate a lot of the game and in a half hour spell scored four goals. Alex Lumley put us in front early in the half, and further goals came from Matt Edwards, a second goal from Charlie Postance, with the fifth goal coming from substitute Jonny Coates, producing further progress in the competition. The FA Vase Match report can be found elsewhere in this programme.

Our Reserves had their first win in the Suburban League a couple of weeks ago with a 6-1 over Cobham, which included a hat-trick for Liam Pearson, whilst the Youth U18 secured their first win this season in the Southern Youth League in the 2-1 win away to Cove. Read more about the Reserves and Youth teams in the pages of this programme.

For the first time this season our associated club Woking Cougars, will be mascots at the match this afternoon. The first age group being the Under 10s, who will also be involved in a penalty shoot out at halftime.

Next week, Knaphill are in Cup football action when on Tuesday night they make their second visit of the season to Badshot Lea, this time it’s the 1st round of the Premier Challenge Cup kick off 7.30pm. Then next Saturday 5th October, Knaphill stay in Cup mode when we meet up again with AFC Croydon

FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round, Saturday 21st September Knaphill FC 5 - 1 Tadley Calleva FC

rePOrTing bAckKnappers Prove A Tad Tasty For TadleyIt was high fives for Knaphill when they despatched Hampshire side Tadley Calleva out of the FA Vase at Redding Way on Saturday. Following a first half which panned out equal between the two teams, it was the second forty five minutes in which Knaphill really put the pressure on their visitors with a display that drove through the visitors with four goals in a half hour spell that mesmerised Tadley with some fluent football.

Knaphill got off to the perfect start when in the fifth minute, Matt Powell fed a through ball to Charlie Postance who took his chance well to make it 1-0. The lead however, was short lived when James Milford cut into the 18 yard box, drove his effort across the face of goal, it looked to be veering past the outside of Lee Allen’s near post, but deceived the Knaphill keeper as the ball crept just inside the post to equalise for the visitors after eight minutes.

The goal gave the visitors game a kick start and their next telling effort on goal came in the 25th minute when from a free kick, Allen saved well as he parried away a free kick for a corner. Just minutes before at the other end, Knaphill went close to regaining the lead, and in a crowded goalmouth were denied by a timely clearance by a Tadley defender in the six yard box.

Matt Powell, whose swift attacking moves troubled the Tadley defence, delivered a forceful driving effort that had the Tadley keeper making a diving save to his left to divert the ball away for a corner. Defender Timmy Taylor surged into the heart of the visitors defence after 33 minutes and his well placed shot was denied a goal by an alert save by the keeper. Knaphill were often looking dangerous when breaking, but no side could break the 1-1 scoreline as the half drew to a close with both sides creating chances, but not delivering.

The second half was just seven minutes old when Knaphill forged into a 2-1 lead when Alex Lumley made his presence felt in the Tadley defence and made his

mark by firing home from six yards. Three minutes later a Powell effort flashed across the face of goal, but no Knaphill player close enough to make contact. Matt Edwards made it 3-1 after 57 minutes as Knaphill had more then stepped up a gear, they were firing on all cylinders and dominating the game with some good football.

On the hour Knaphill still had their foot on the pedal and Postance rose to head home Knaphill’s fourth. Although Tadley did create the odd chance as the half was progressing, a lack of finish, was not going to help reduce the arrears. Knaphill continued to pressurise their opponents and the afternoon saw a final coat of gloss put on the performance when substitute Jonny Coates tucked away a free kick to make it 5-1. Game over.

Knaphill: Allen, Acton (Doble 56mins), Lumley, Close, Messenger, Hartlebury (Coates 75mins), Thorogood, Postance (Prendergast 64mins), Powell, Edwards.

Goals: Postance (2) 5mins, 60mins, Lumley 52mins, Edwards 57mins, Coates 82mins.

Booked: Acton, Messenger

PAying uS A viSiT......AFC CrOydOn

AFC Croydon Athletic were officially born on 6th February 2012 after a group of supporters gathered at Selhurst Evangelical Church in South Norwood to form a new club. The newly appointed committee had just 7 weeks to put everything in place to convince the Football Association and the League that they were worthy of a place at Step 6 in the pyramid. Despite the challenge it was a successful journey.

The need to form a new club had about because of the demise Croydon Athletic FC who had become the innocent victims of an international cricket match-fixing scandal by their then owner. Valiant attempts to find a buyer, which looked very positive at times, turned out to be fruitless and with debts mounting and owners unwilling to pay what they owed the club folded playing its last game in December 2011.

Having secured the support of the Combined Counties League and the London FA, representatives of the Club met officials from the FA and made their case for being placed in Division One. Having made a presentation and answered questions for more than ninety minutes there followed a long wait to see if they would endorse the application. On the day of the first annual general meeting, on 10th May, the Club got the call that they had been recommended to placed at Step 6.

The biggest challenge had been securing a stadium to play at. The club’s real home remains the Keith Tuckey Stadium off Mayfield Road but that currently lies empty as the owners of the old Club refuse to give it up and back to the Council. It is hoped that this will be resolved and discussions can start with the Council about the

Club’s return there in the future. For this season at least, however, it is indebted to both Croydon FC and Croydon Council who have facilitated the use of Croydon Sports Arena as its new home.

With a place in the league secured the focus shifted from off the field priorities back to the team. On 29th May the Club were pleased to announce the appointment of Antony Williams as its first manager and along with his management team he set about the task of putting together a squad capable of competing in the division. The preparations begun in earnest with the first pre-season friendly against Fisher FC and the journey had really begun.

We completed our initial season in Division One of the Combined Counties League in a creditable 8th position. The club also won its first piece of silverware by winning the Lemon Recordings Division One cup by beating Staines Lammas 5-0 at Windsor. We now look to move upwards and on to more success.

Knaphill FC would like to extend a warm welcome to AFC Croydon, their Management and Fans - Welcome to Redding Way.

in reServeGood Afternoon Everyone,

Last Saturday, 21st September, we travelled to Walton & Hersham FC for a tough league fixture against the currant league leaders. The squad was as follows:- McArthur, Davis, Mason, Herbert, Kellet-Smith, Daltrey, Dennison, Skinella, Dawber, Clark, Jones. Subs A.Ruggles, Kwenda. We did lose Emen Udaw who pulled out late and Jonny Coates and Liam Pearson were called up to the 1st team for FA Vase duty.

It was made clear to the players before the game we can’t keep gifting the opposition goals unfortunately after 4 mins our midfield didn’t track their midfield runner and we were one down. On 15 mins it got worse, a cross from the left found McArthur rooted to his line and their striker scored from 6 yards out. Then for the remaining 30 mins something strange happened.....we took control of the game. Our midfield 3 of Daltrey, Skinella & Dennison abley supported by Kellet-Smith and Dawber down the wings ran the game. Our centre halves Mason and Herbert marshalled by Davis didn’t let their strikers have a sniff. Clark and Jones up front were not only securing the ball when it reached them but running there defence ragged, even to the extent of beating there giant centre halves in the air. Now we were creating chances, Mason at the back post with a free header, jones 2 chances running through on goal.

There bench was now going mad. Then it happened, Jones through with only the keeper to beat, 30 mins gone and back in the game at 2-1. We couldn’t get back on level terms by half time but came in very positive.

The second half continued as we finished it with us pressing for an equaliser, but as the game went on their fitness enabled them to score twice in the last 10 mins. All in all though a positive performance by the lads. We will look to take that performance into our next game against Chessington & Hook in the 2nd leg of the League Cup on Thursday 26th September.

We wish Ruggs and the 1st team all the best against AFC Croydon today

Nick’s Notes from the Southern Youth League..........

yOung gunSLast Wednesday night the U18’s travelled to fellow Combined Counties club, Cove FC at their Squirrel Lane ground. Never the flattest pitch in the world, but Knaphill has always had good success on this ground. However the Knappers have never has there been a more bizarre match in their time in the Southern Youth League.

Both teams started the night without a point in their league campaigns; so the game, you might expect, was to be a fiercely contested affair. Knaphill started with a new face in goal, Charlie Taylor – no relation to Manager Gary Taylor; and Tom Hudson, who is Oliver Hudson’s brother. The two teams however had to take second place to the referee who brandished the red card FOUR times during the match, two from each team and a hatful of yellow cards. Both team managers and the spectators present couldn’t believe their eyes as with the number of cards shown as the game was reduced to a shambles with the players not knowing whether to laugh or cry as the cards flew.

he end result saw Knaphill take all 3 points with goals from Nico Aquino and Nahuel Franchino by taking a 2-0 lead with 10 men. Cove got a consolation goal late on when their substitute came on got booked, scored and then sent off for a second caution all within 10 minutes! Hopefully this result will be the catalyst to kick start the season and with the FA Youth Cup tie against Lancing coming up on Thursday night. A 53 seat coach has been supplied for the players, management and supporters to travel down together, a subsidised cost of £5 per seat will be levied with the coach departing Redding Way at 4.45pm on Thursday 26th September. Please contact Youth Secretary Nick Croshaw on 07804 698806.

This game starts a run of cup games as on the 1st of October Knaphill entertain Central Division side Balham Blazers in the first round of the Southern Youth League Challenge Cup. Seven days later the visitors are Walton & Hersham U18’s who travel to Redding Way ton contest the 1st round of the Surrey Floodlit Mid-week Cup. This will be a re-match of the 2nd round tie played

at Stompond Lane in 2011, where after a fighting 0-0 draw including extra-time, the Knappers then missed 3 of their 4 penalties to go out in a very disappointing fashion.

If Knaphill are successful against Lancing then the Walton & Hersham game will be postponed and an away trip to Sussex based Arundel or a trip to Horley Town in the FA Youth Cup 2nd Qualifying Round. A 1st round win in the County Cup will result in a journey to either Redhill or Kingstonians. The league is always the best judge of the teams progress and general improvement, but you can’t beat a good cup run and after two Grant-McLellan Finals in 2010 & 2011 the cub looks forward to further good results. Talking of the Grant-McLellan Cup, Knaphill have been given a bye through to the quarter-finals and another opportunity to make a final is just two games away.
