one oF The joys of football is knowing you never get two weekends the same — there’s always something capable of surprising you.

Last weekend was full of the unexpected. We knew it would be full on at John Kerkhof Park with four senior homes games, and three of them kicking off at the same 12.30pm.

Four pitches, eight changing rooms, more than 120 people to be fed hot meals and all the usual gear and equipment to go out and come back in.

Not to mention our extra requirements this year (under WaiBOP senior regulations)

to rope off pitch 2 for Championship and Division A games, and provide up to 18 seats in the newly–marked technical areas.

Prepared as we were, fate stepped in.A lock broke on the door of dressing room

1, threatening to prevent Taupo from using it at half–time. When spare keys and an attempted lock pick by Harry Bomans, it was left to big Ali McQuarters to smash his way in (the repairs will be done later this week).

Then the bad news of the day.Jason Waddell, a D2 player, had broken his

leg on pitch 6. The game was abandoned and after a 50–minute wait, an ambulance took him to Waikato Hospital where he was kept overnight for an operation to set four breaks.

His injury — his second broken leg in only five games for Cambridge — put everything else into perspective.

That, and the news that chairman Steve Thomas had gone to hospital to be with son Oscar who needed an urgent operation.

Watching the first team roll Tauranga City United 14–0 was rewarding, and hearing the women had beaten Otorohanga 10–1 was a joy.

But I’m sure most of us were still thinking of Jason and Steve, and hoping all would turn out well for them both.

waiboP PremiershiP news

MacLeod was promoted to the first team after scoring a goal in the first few minutes of his senior debut the previous weekend when he played for Cambridge in the WaiBOP Championship.

But stepping up to the WaiBOP Premiership held no fears for the youngster as he found the net in the 5th, 40th, 57th and 60th minutes and earned himself the Carters Cambridge Player of the Day.

MacLeod is one of a number of Cambridge players who have come through the junior and youth ranks, and he won the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Golden Boot last season for top scoring in the federation’s U-17 youth league won by Cambridge.

For Cambridge, the win against Tauranga confirmed the club will be strong contenders to defend their WaiBOP Premiership title.

later, it was clear a rout was on the cards.In the same fixture last season, Cambridge

won 8-0 – a scoreline that was believed to be a record margin for the previous decade at least. Saturday’s 14-goal walkover eclipsed that milestone with more goals coming from Woodlock (46th min), Jason Szabo (15th min, 53rd min), Jack Taylor (22nd min), Tom Woutersen (35th min, 37th min, 48th min), Adam Brady (82nd min) and Dan Podjursky (70th min).

ONLY a hastily–scribbled extra digit helps keep our scoreboard accurate as the score reaches 14.

all white legend visits John Kerkhof Park

A SURPRISE visitor to Cambridge’s John Kerkhof Park last weekend was former All Whites and Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert (second on left).

Now the national coach of the Maldives, Herbert flew back to New Zealand in time to attend son Kale’s first senior coaching assignment as coach of WaiBOP Championship team Taupo.

Kale (far right on the Taupo bench) won his first game in charge 4–0 against Cambridge, and the perfor-mance suggested Taupo will be title contenders.

Both Kale and Ricki will be back at John Kerkhof Park from April 17–21 when the Ricki Herbert Football Acad-emy holds its National Training Camp at our club.

our d2’s maTCh against west hamilton was abandoned at half-time last saturday after the home side’s Jason waddell broke his leg for the second time in a Cambridge shirt.

After a 50-minute wait for an ambulance, Jason was taken to Waikato Hospital where he was kept overnight, awaiting an operation on Sunday to set four breaks in his leg.

Thankfully, there was no compound fracture and Jason was philosphical about the injury which he said was accidental and “one of those things”.

It’s Jason’s second spell with the club, having returned to training this season after breaking his leg three years ago in a match.

“I’ve now played five games for Cambridge and broken my leg twice,” he said.

The club wishes Jason a speedy recovery and hopes his third spell with Cambridge will be luckier for him.

Meanwhile, he passed on his thanks to those who helped him.

The club’s WaiBOP Championship team lost 4-0 to Taupo in a match watched by club visitor and former All Whites coach Ricki Herbert.

In the other match at John Kerkhof Park, the D1 team beat Te Aroha Cobras 5-1 thanks to a

Dave O’Donnell hat-trick and goals from Dennis Hommel and Steve Finan.

Meanwhile, Cambridge’s travelling teams had mixed fortunes with the Cambridge A losing 5-1 to local rivals Te Awamutu while the Cambridge C team drew 4-4 at Melville United.

Cambridge’s women beat Otorohanga 10-1 at Domain Park last Sunday to make it two wins from two games for coach Andrew Taylor.

Taylor Oosthuysen opened the scoring latching onto a cross from leading goal scorer Astrid Howarth who bagged four goals to add to her season’s tally, now six.

The Cambridge backline led by Carey Ireland and Gemma Martin linked well with midfield duo Chrissy Goodin and Kaylee Oosthuysen.

Kym Thomasen scored a brace from up front and assisted in four of the goals with Goodin also assisting in four.

Kaylee Oosthuysen scored the final two and was vigilant as ever in creating abilities overall.

Overall Cambridge came home with a very convincing 10-1 win, despite a late consolation goal for Otorohanga after a defensive slip–up, with the Cambridge Hire Player of the day going to a deserving Taylor Oosthuysen who scored twice.

danny styles (midfield)A hard–working midfielder, Styles joined Cambridge in 2013 and was a first–team regular in 2014. In 2015, work commitments limited his appearances but the club hopes to see more of him on the pitch this season.

Jason szabo (forward or midfield)Experienced attacking midfielder who hails from the UK. Gets amongst the goals and was 2013 top scorer and ‘Player of the Year’ for our Waikato A team, and runner–up for the Premiership team’s 2015 Golden Boot.

Tom woutersen (forward)Learned his football with Cambridge, helping win the U–19 Satellite Youth Tournament in Napier, before spending three seasons with Palmerston North Marist. Returned to Cambridge for 2013.

adam brady (forward)Joined the club as a new arrival from the United Kingdom in 2015, where he played for Melbourne Inn in the Plymouth and West Devon Combination Football League. Was a regular goalscorer for the WaiBOP Championship side and scored a memorable goal in the end–of–season promotion play–off against Waitemata.

sam garmonsway (defender or winger)Former Cambridge High School player who joined the club in 2014 after playing for Universities AFC while studying at Canterbury University.

dan Podjursky (forward)A speedy forward with good ball control, Podjursky made his first team debut as a 17–year–old in the Northern League, and played a season for Hawkes Bay in the national youth league.

Josh dagnall (winger)Made his first team debut as a schoolboy, helping the side win promotion from the ‘old’ Federation 2 League to what is now the WaiBOP Premiership. Returned to the pitch last season after leaving Cambridge for a stint in the army.

Callum macleod (forward)The leading goalscorer for the 2015 Cambridge U–17 team, MacLeod also won the Golden Boot for leading all scoring in the WaiBOP U–17 Federation League. Promising youngster who marked his senior club debut with a goal in the opening game of the 2016 WaiBOP Championship.

Jack Taylor (forward)In his second spell at Cambridge, having returned to the club for the 2016 season. In 2014, he was the club’s top goalscorer in the ‘old’ Federation 1, and he led the forward line to help the side win promotion from Federation 2 the year before.

Jordan sylvester (defender or winger)Joined Cambridge for the 2014 season from Universities AFC, Christchurch.

shaun Kipara (forward)Joined Cambridge from Northern League outfit AFC Fury in May 2015. A former WaiBOP United youth player and featured in last season’s WaiBOP All Stars match.

richard armstrong (defender)Joined Cambridge for the start of the 2014 season from Ngaruawahia United where he was a regular in the Northern League Reserves Division. Assistant coach for our Championship side.

Papamoa won promotion to the Premiership in 2014 when finishing third in the former Federation 2 competition (now waiboP Championship).

The club is one of the fastest growing in the Bay of Plenty with about 500 senior and junior players.

The club’s best known former player is All White defender Tommy Smith who played junior football at Papamoa and is now a professional with Ipswich Town in England.

The club’s patron is another ex-All White, striker Wynton Rufer who was named the Oceania Player of the Century.

Papamoa come to Cambridge after a 5–0 defeat to Ngongotaha last weekend.

In its early days, the teams played in light blue after the colours used by Cambridge University, England. 1951: The club held its first formal

meeting on March 20, 1951, appointing Viv Butler as its first president, and R.S.Entwistle as its patron.

Butler’s support of English club Arsenal led to a change of club colours and from the mid-1950s, Cambridge teams have played in red and white strips. 1957: The club played its home games

on the Town Square until 1957 when a two-room wooden shed was built on the Leamington Domain for £134.19. 1964: On December 1, 1964, the

Cambridge Borough Council agreed to provide the club with land on the town belt in Vogel Street and plans were drawn up for the clubrooms to be built. 1967: The club moved into the Vogel St

grounds, where it has been based since. The grounds were renamed John Kerkhof Park after Dutch immigrant John Kerkhof who, with members of his family and other supporters, built the clubrooms and changing facilities.

The grounds are now owned by the Waipa District Council but leased to the club on a long-term basis. 1972: The club applied for its senior

men’s team to join the Northern League competition. 1974: Extensions to the clubrooms

and playing fields became necessary and were built in 1974, with new junior grounds established beside the Polo Club grounds further north on Vogel St. 1978: The club elected its first women

committee member. 1983: Junior teams (11,12 and 13 year

olds) entered the Waikato competitions for

the first time in 1983. 1984: The club achieved its first

significant success at senior level, winning the Northern League’s 4th Division in 1984. 1993: The club reached new heights

in 1993, winning the Northern League 2nd

division. 1995: The club built a concrete car

park that’s still in use today. The car park is where the club sometimes erects temporary grandstands for major fixtures. 2005: The Waipa District Council

approved the transfer of the Polo Grounds to the football club for use by its junior players, while the polo club moved to new grounds in Lamb St, Leamington. 2007: The old polo clubhouse was

knocked down to make way for a new junior building. The Cambridge junior teams celebrated their new home by winning all five 8th-Open grade WJSA knockout trophies, a first for both Cambridge and the WJSA. 2008: The club’s main senior clubrooms

survived a tornado in late 2008 but suffered damage to walls, roof and windows, while shattered glass was sprayed over the nearby number one pitch. Other sports clubs and community groups came to help the club and helped it rebuild. 2010: The club launched a five–year

plan for its membership which had now grown to more than 600 players, with men’s, women’s and junior teams. 2011: After many seasons in the

Northern League the club was relegated from the Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 2 in 2011 after finishing 12th and losing the challenger series playoff vs Manukau City AFC.

The club won the New Zealand Match Programme of the Year Award for 2011. 2012: The club elected to drop two

divisions into the Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Division Two to rebuild under coach Karl Dagnall and won promotion in 2012 to Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Division One.

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club. 2013: Cambridge FC and the

neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park.

In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side.

In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United.

This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system. 2014: The club's first team finished

runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup.

The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014.

In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community.

WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches.

Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club).

The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014. 2015: As the club entered its 68th season,

it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football.

It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts.

In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/changing rooms for local and visiting players.

On 25 May 2015, the club staged its first ever international match when Fiji and Hungary came to Cambridge for an U–20

international as preparation for the FIFA U–20 World Cup tournament.

In July 2015, our club was awarded the Quality Club Mark by New Zealand Football, becoming only the fourth club in our region to achieve the 1 Star status, and becoming one of fewer than 30 clubs throughout the contry to earn the QCM.

is New Zealand international striker Chris Wood who joined English Championship club Leeds United for $4.6 million from Leicester City in July 2015.

Wood made his senior debut at Cambridge as a 14–year–old, having previously played for our juniors.

Programme cuts injury risk Cambridge FC are getting behind a warm–up programme that has been proven to reduce the risk of injuries by 30%.

It’s the FIFA 11+ Complete Warm-Up Programme for youth and senior players and Senior Men’s Club Captain Lee Turpett and U–13 youth coach Steve Thomas recently attended a NZ Football–WaiBOP Football workshop to learn how it works.

The programme has direct performance benefits for footballers — making fitter, faster and more agile players as well as reducing the risk of all injuries by 30%.

It is designed to be delivered by coaches, is easy to learn and implement into existing training sessions and completion of the course results in FIFA 11+ certification in as

little as two hours.The All Whites and Football Ferns have

been using FIFA 11+ for some time and all the ASB Premiership teams undertook to use it last summer season.

WaiBOP Football plans to encourage all 106 affiliated clubs and schools to adopt the programme, and is running workshops to team club representatives how to use it.

So what is FIFA 11+?“The programme takes 15–20 minutes

to do and is designed to replace a standard warm–up,” explains NZ Football’s doctor, Mark Fulcher.

“If it is done twice a week, it reduces the risk of injury by 30% and the risk of severe injury by 50%. These are things like an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury in the knee.”
