Red Deer Lake School October 2016 Newsletter Administrative Message September has been an exciting month of getting back to routines and learning. It is awe- inspiring to go into classes and listen to students talking about what is happening in their brains, OR to hear students set norms about how they are going to work together in a group, OR to see students completely engaged in a lesson whereby they use Lion King to better understand Shakespeare’s Hamlet, OR to see students excited about taking a quiz because of the new technology they are using. Anyone who is pessimistic about “the next generation” need only spend an hour or two in our classrooms to feel proud of and inspired by our students! Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting Our annual plan for communicating with parents/guardians about student achievement is as follows: Elementary Learner Profiles will come home three times (end of November, March and June). This year, we will host Parent-Teacher interviews on November 2nd and 3rd. By having the interviews early, we can touch base with parents to explain what we’re seeing in class and ensure parents have a clear understanding of their children’s progress. In February, we will host Student-led Conferences, whereby students share a variety of learning pieces with their parents, speaking about their level of achievement based on the rubric given. In addition to these “formal” communication times, teachers will send home completed and marked work, with attached rubrics where appropriate, to ensure parents see evidence of student learning on a regular basis. As always, parents/guardians are welcome to contact teachers throughout the year with questions or concerns. Junior High Just like Elementary, Learner Profiles will come home with Junior High students three times (end of November, March and June). Fall Parent-Teacher interviews will continue to be immediately after the Learner Profile, on November 30th and December 1st. In Feb- ruary, teachers will choose either the Parent-Teacher interview format OR Student-led Conferences, depending on which way is most effective means of communication for the various subjects areas. In addition, Junior High students will be bringing home Progress Reports on a regular ba- sis (about once/month when there is no Learner Profile). These focus on the characteristics of a responsible learner, which are aligned to our learner profile. Students self-assess for each class and teachers record their observations as well. Again, parents/guardians are welcome to contact teachers throughout the year with questions or concerns.

September has been an exciting month of getting back to routines and learning. It is awe-inspiring to go into classes and listen to students talking about what is happening in their brains, OR to hear students set norms about how they are going to work together in a group, OR to see students completely engaged in a lesson whereby they use Lion King to better understand Shakespeare’s Hamlet, OR to see students excited about taking a quiz because of the new technology they are using. Anyone who is pessimistic about “the next generation” need only spend an hour or two in our classrooms to feel proud of and inspired by our students!

Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting

Our annual plan for communicating with parents/guardians about student achievement is as follows:

Elementary

Learner Profiles will come home three times (end of November, March and June).

Junior High

Just like Elementary, Learner Profiles will come home with Junior High students three times (end of November, March and June). Fall Parent-Teacher interviews will continue to be immediately after the Learner Profile, on November 30th and December 1st. In Feb-ruary, teachers will choose either the Parent-Teacher interview format OR Student-led Conferences, depending on which way is most effective means of communication for the various subjects areas.

In addition, Junior High students will be bringing home Progress Reports on a regular ba-sis (about once/month when there is no Learner Profile). These focus on the characteristics of a responsible learner, which are aligned to our learner profile. Students self-assess for each class and teachers record their observations as well. Again, parents/guardians are welcome to contact teachers throughout the year with questions or concerns.

Maplewood Learner Profile Pilot

This year, our school staff chose to be part of a school division pilot project to use an online system (Maplewood) as both a gradebook and as a means of producing learner profiles. Along with five other schools, RDL staff are receiving training to be able to use this system effectively, in accordance with principles of quality assessment practice. Parents will be able to access this online system, in order to see their children’s grades. The timeline for parent access has not yet been determined.

Professional Development Days

On our September 23rd PD Day, we spent the morning working on the development of Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs), and spent the afternoon in training for the Maplewood system. Our October 7th PD day will include time to devel-op our Individual Professional Growth Plans, time to discuss principles of assessment, such as categorical grading and Mastery, and time again to use Maplewood to input student achievement.

Parent and Community Involvement

We would like to thank the many parents who have already given so much of their time to our school and stu-dents. Whether it is helping with hot lunch, barbecuing at the Carnival for Kenya, helping in the classrooms, or driving to volleyball games, we want you to know that we appreciate your commitment. Thank you!

We hope to see many parents at our School Council’s AGM on Tues. Oct 11th at 7pm. Attending these meetings helps parents have a better understanding of how the school operates and gives an important opportunity for dialogue, ques-tions, and clarifications.

If you have any ideas, questions, or concerns, please feel free to bring them forward. We are here for you! We can be reached by phone, email, or in person.

Updates from the Office

*If at all possible, if you have to pull your child out for appoint‐ments, etc., please try and arrange to do this around recess or lunch times (10:45‐11:00 / 12:20‐1:00).  Pulling students during class time is very disruptive to the teachers and students.

It is very important that we know in the office whether a student is present in the school. This is es-pecially important for emergency purposes. Please ensure, when your child is leaving early, that the person picking up come into the office and sign stu-dent out. Thank you for your understanding.

ADSavings Coupon Books are available for $20 at the office.  All pro‐

ceeds go to the Red Deer Lake Building Hope Society .

COBS BAKERY’s in Shawnessy and Okotoks are offering a “Dough Raiser”.  Five percent of sales, from anyone men on‐ing they are from RDL, will be given to our school.   We were recently presented with a cheque from COBS for over $200 in support of this program.
