CHILDREN’S FITNESS CHILD TAX CREDIT:The Children’s Fitness Tax Credit allows you to claim eligible fees paid in the year up to a maximum of $500 per child (an additional amount of $500 is available if the child is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit and a minimum of $100 has been paid for eligible fees in the year). Eligible fees include an amount paid related to the cost of registration or membership for your or your spouse’s or common-law partner’s child in a prescribed program of physical activity. The child must have been under 16 years of age (or under 18 years of age if eligible for the disability tax credit) at the beginning of the year in which an eligible fitness expense was paid.On October 9, 2014, a proposal was announced to increase the maximum amount per child to $1,000 for the 2014 and subsequent tax years. You will be able to take advantage of the increased maximum amount when you file your 2014 income tax and benefit return in the upcoming filing season.

• Ongoing (either a maximum of eight weeks duration with a minimum of one session per week, or in the case of camps, five consecutive days)• Supervised• Suitable for children, and • Substantially all of the activities must include a significant amount of physical activity that contributes to cardio- respiratory endurance plus one or more of: muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility or balance.

The physical activity for which tax receipts are issued should encourage children to strive towards at least 30 minutes of sustained moderate to vigorous physical activity per session for children under 10, and 60 minutes for children 10 and over.

Technology meets art as we learn how the digital age makes everyone a stop motion animator. We’ll learn the physical rules of stop motion in the world around us—and then break them! Starting with a few digital photographs we will end with our very own Youtube page full of crazy digital short videos which you will write, model, voice, compile and publish! Participants will work with their hands and digital devices many will already have around the house to express their imagination in unexpected ways. From brainstorming to storyboarding, set design and modelling, we’ll form a simple production team and see what the kids come up with.

Sculpture Class Ages 14 & up

Everyone is welcome - no previous experience in sculpture is necessary. Workshop is open to beginners, intermediate and professionals, ages 14 and up. The workshop will focus on - building the armature, familiarizing yourself with the self-hardening clay and using sculpture tools by sculpting individual facial features - an eye, nose, mouth and ear, and then right into the final head. Students will take their finished work home to dry and enjoy forever. All materials and tools supplied.

Adult Programs

Moy Style Taichi is a gentle exercise for mind and body of Chinese origin. It is suitable for persons of all ages and most fitness levels. Emphasis is on the whole body, including increasing muscle control and strength, improving joint motion, and regaining flexibility of tendons and other soft tissue. In addition to overall fitness, it is a useful therapy for persons having difficulty with balance, flexibility and mobility, such as those suffering from Parkinson’s disease and arthritis.

There are three separate classes available: Beginners, Continuing and Intermediate. Each classruns over a 12 week period, one in the Fall and one in the New Year

Beginners: This class is intended for persons who have never practiced Taichi. It would be useful both to those wanting to become Taichi practitioners, and to those seeking to learn basic Taichi and Qigong as therapy. The instruction covers Qigong exercises needed to warm up, build strength and cool down. The introductory set of eighteen Moy Style Taichi moves will be taught. Techniques for relaxation and meditation will also be covered. The beginners class is two days a week, one for learning new moves and

TIMETIME (Together in Movement and Exercise) is an exercise program that helps you to improve your mobility while you live independently in your home community. Intermediate: This class is primarily intended for the more serious student who desires to become a Taichi practitioner. The Moy Style Long Form of 108 moves will be taught, including refinements on the moves of the Introductory and Continuing Set. The Long Form develops considerable balance and core strength. The Intermediate class is once a week. Participants of this class are welcome to join the beginner’s class at no charge.

Kyokushin Karate 13+ years

The Oliver Kyokushin Karate club is one of the oldest Kyokushin dojo’s in B.C. Operating since 1986 Mike Riplinger (1st Dan) has been training since 1989. Classes consist of Kihon (kicks, strikes and blocks), Kata (forms), Kumite (sparring) as well as self-defense and conditioning. High levels of training have the benefit of preparing one’s self for any situation on the street, as well as increasing cardio level. Age of students: 13 years and older - Previous students 12 and under who have trained with Oliver dojo and have a colored belt will be able to train but please consider the higher level of training, and length of class time before registering because early dismissal will not be permitted. Sculpture Class Ages 14 & up

Everyone is welcome - no previous experience in sculpture is necessary. Workshop is open to beginners, intermediate and professionals, ages 14 and up. The workshop will focus on - building the armature, familiarizing yourself with the self-hardening clay and using sculpture tools by sculpting individual facial features - an eye, nose, mouth and ear, and then right into the final head. Snowshoeing Tours 16 years & up

Experience the beauty of the Okanagan outdoors in the wintertime while burning calories and having fun! Participants will learn the basic techniques of snowshoeing and enjoy a guided trek around the McKinney Nordic Trail area. Bring your own water and light lunch/snack. Pre-registration is required. Participants will be called with detailed information about where to meet and what to bring. Please leave your dogs at home on this trip. This trip will be led by a member of Oliver/Osoyoos Search and Rescue. There will be some discussion about proper trip planning and being prepared to be out in the winter environment. Community Weight RoomTry out our elliptical trainer, treadmills or rowing machine along with the universal gym and large variety

of free weights. The community weight room is an unsupervised facility. Minimum age is 18 years without special permission from administration. See Page 24 for Youth Program.

Fitness Room OrientationsNew to the fitness room or to working out in a gym? Attend a one-time introduction session to our fitness room to get familiar with the different cardio and weight equipment options and how to use them safely and effectively. Please sign up for the session of your choice in advance. Participants must be 14 years or older and hold a current membership or pay the drop-in fee to attend. A schedule of dates/times will be available at the Community Centre office. For more information, please call 250-498-4985.Cost $20/person/session.

Volunteers make all the difference!Do you have skills, energy, and a little bit of time to offer your community? There are many rewarding and fun ways to volunteer with Oliver Parks and Recreation, including Special Events Crew, Craft Shop, Program Assistant, Fitness Room Attendant, or Promotions and Marketing. Please call to find out more, or visit our website’s “forms” section to get started!

Volunteers Benefits Program: When you volunteer at our facility you accumulate credits to be used towards your own (or your family’s) health and fitness opportunities at Oliver Parks and Recreation. Anytime you wish to trade in those credits towards a pass to the pool or fitness room for yourself or a family member please come in during office hours and speak to our office Recreation Clerk who will be happy to help you out.

New this fall you will be able to use your volunteer hours to purchase passes to fitness programs such as Yoga, Zumba, Gentle fit or Strength and Stability!
