Recrear is an organization mandated to support youth-inspired community development projects internationally. Recrear aims to provide a platform for young people to develop their ideas into implementable projects and bring fresh energy to the field of international development. At Recrear we want young people to take engagement with society to the next level, yet, we recognize that a lack of skills, support and inspiration are obstacles to reaching our true potential. We are striving to create a platform to connect a self-sustaining network of young people to get their ideas off the ground. Recrear believes in the potential of young people and aims at developing an inclusive, collaborative dialogue between different organizations and cultures. We cherish diversity, reflexivity and value collaborative exchange and cooperation among our stakeholders. We work together to transform ideas into bold initiatives. Recrear was launched in August 2010 out of Recrear.beta, an international conference hosted in Berlin, Germany. During the first year of operation Recrear successfully implemented two projects in Palestine and the Dominican Republic, launched its first local chapter in New Orleans and completed its second annual conference in Ottawa, Canada. In the second year of operation, Recrear aims at consolidating our networks and increasing our visibility and scope by developing relevant partnerships around the world. Our strategies for 2011/12 can be summarized under the headlines of Projects, Consulting Network, CSR Strategy and Network Development. In 2011/12 Recrear will be incorporating as a non-profit and registering for charitable status in Canada, launching two local chapters in New Orleans and Ottawa, as well as implementing at least four projects in Ecuador, Russia and Bangladesh. In 2011/12, in addition Recrear will be launching a young consultant online portal to spark new ideas. For Recrear, reaching and interacting with a growing number of passionate young people is essential; we plan to use social media, partnership building and local chapters to increase our networks and expand our capability to operate in different communities.

Principles:

Page 5: RecrearBusiness Plan 2011/12

The term ‘recrear’, Spanish for Recreate, initially suggested the founders’ desire to recreate the powerful sense of belonging and cooperation experienced on The Scholar Ship, a transatlantic oceanic university developed by a consortium of 7 universities from every continent. In an extraordinary inaugural voyage, 200 students from 35 countries lived, studied, and travelled the world together for 16 weeks training on intercultural competencies. The Ship was a laboratory of ideas! To start an organization with a sound vision, Recrear needed the same intercultural energy boost. Recrear.beta was launched with the vision that cohabiting in an intercultural environment pushes creative boundaries and generates more inclusive, powerful reflections. In August 2010, 16 talented people from 10 different nationalities, skills and perspectives lived and worked together in Berlin for 21 days to launch Recrear. The conference, Recrear.beta set the tone for an organization that is youth-driven, horizontal, and flexible. In 2010/2011, Recrear successfully implemented two projects, (one in Palestine (http://recrear2.wordpress.com/ ) and one in the Dominican Republic (http://recrearparticipacion.wordpress.com/ )), and launched a local chapter in New Orleans(http://recrearparticipacion.wordpress.com/2011/07/09/recrear-new-orelans-launching-a-new-chapter-of-recrear/) . In August 2012 Recrear had its second annual conference, RecrearMagnify (http://recrearmagnify.org/ ), in Ottawa, Canada. Today, Recrear thrives and focuses on the creative power of intercultural dimensions. The name ‘Recrear’ suggests our vision to bring fresh energy to the field of international development with young and innovative ideas. Recrear also means ‘to entertain’. Our projects aim to be energizing and fun.We want young people to take engagement with society to the next level; yet we recognize that a lack of skills, support and inspiration are obstacles to reaching our true potential. We are striving to create a platform to connect a self-sustaining network of young people to get their ideas off the ground.

SWOT Analysis:

v

vv

Threats

Weaknesses Recrear is enriched by a very international pool of members and staff with different edu-cational backgrounds and experiences; We are able to maximize the financial re-sources we have to deliver projects. Each young professional we engage has been a credit to the organization through their skill sets as we tap into their wide reaching net-works. Our youth driven mandate speaks to one of the most capable age groups for making a posi-tive impact on society.

Building key partnerships with all relevant stakeholders internationally; Recrear in 2011 has the opportunity to grow through two local chapters in Ottawa and New Orleans; We have no geographic limitation; with every year our global networks expand therefore al-lowing us to be more far reaching. Following our non-profit incorporation and charitable status registration in Canada, we will be able to apply for relevant national grants;

Recrear has the opportunity to become financially sustainable by implementing Corporate Social Responsibility projects for the private sector.

The development of local chapter initiatives could cause human resources to be stretched and not meet their mandate; Lack of commitment on the part of Recrear members could slow the growth of the organ-ization; A greater number of staff means a bigger need for human resources management at an international level; The lack of a stable financial flow could slow the growth of the organization.

The internationality of Recrear means that often work is done remotely: this can create communication breakdowns; Unpaid staff; The only opportunity for the international staff to all meet is during the annual confer-ence which is straining for an organization in its key stages of development;

Pilot Conference: Recrear.beta: Berlin, Germany

21

For three weeks in August of 2010, a group of 16 individuals from around the world came to Berlin, Germany to participate in Recrear.beta. The goal of this series of seminars, workshops, and conferences was to bring to life a new non-profit organization dedicated to promoting youth-developed and imple-mented public benefit projects. Through this intensive program, Recrear.beta also sought to provide its participants with a unique educational experience and an opportunity to build leadership skills and teamwork in an intercultural envi-ronment.

Collaborating in Berlin for three weeks with a unique and passionate group of young people, all sharing the goal of positive social change, was truly unforgettable for both the participants and organizers of Recrear.beta. Although everyone returned to his or her respective life and country at the end of the program, the bond that formed between us has kept us committed to further developing our organization together.

At the center of Gioel’s work is the belief that intercultural dialogue is a powerful instrument for international development. Gioel grew up in a small town in central Italy. In 2007, Gioel travelled the world and studied conflict resolution on board of the Scholar Ship, the four- month trip was a true intercultural ‘experiment’ and it profoundly impacted her worldview. In 2008/09, Gioel received a grant to study and work in Germany for a year and spent a month in Nablus delivering a ‘Cultural Dialogue’ workshop with Project Hope. Following the project, Gioel took part in co‐founding Recrear with the idea of establishing a platform to facilitate young

Since she was elected Executive Director of Recrear her life has been packed in a suitcase as she travels between the Dominican Republic, Canada, Ecuador and Thailand. Gioel holds a BA in International Studies from the University of New Orleans and an MPhil in Development Studies from Cambridge University.

Sifa is a musician at heart. She believes music has the power to deliver to youth a meaningful message on intercultural dialogue. Born in Congo with origins from Rwanda, Sifa grew up in South Africa and Canada; she considers all four countries home. Her exposure to different cultures and weather has left her feeling like a global African and desiring to focus on development in African countries. She believes that Recrear, her education, her love for music and love for developing countries all give her the ability to reach the youth and raise awareness on African issues. Sifa currently studies International Business and Economics at Carleton University in Ottawa.

Though she was born Canadian, Kirsten has come to recognize herself as a global citizen who thrives when being able to challenge world view and embrace foreign cultures. After having spent 4 years in Indonesia and 3 years in Tanzania during her youth, it was no surprise that she learned to cultivate a love for the world of development. Since returning to Canada Kirsten became the Vice-President of Corporate Relations with AIESEC Carlton. Within this chapter of the world’s largest student‐run organization, she was responsible for bringing interns from abroad to work for companies and even NGOs in Canada’s capital.

Director of Marketing and Media

Since her time of cultivating a love for Development Theater in Tanzania, Kirsten continually maintained a commitment to seeking new platforms in which she can empower others. Moreover, in the spirit of understanding the policy that informs development, she has also kept a firm commitment to Model United Nations and has frequented many international conferences over the years.§ Being raised in Peru, Valerie was quickly exposed to general inefficiency and stagnancy that was all the more fueled by a lack of incentive, educational inadequacy, and cultural barriers. These observations sparked her interest enough to focus her undergraduate studies in Political Science and International Development. Since graduating, Valerie traveled to India and developed an Eye Care program in Dharamsala, India that provided pro-bono examinations and eyeglasses to the Tibetan refugee community. Photography and dancing is her religion and she is a newly-converted vegetarian. Finally, she enjoys pushing herself and others to question their beliefs, push their boundaries, and

always search for new horizons. Valerie is fascinated by topics associated with the creation, maintenance, and transformation of urban spaces and deeply believes that where we live matters. She is ultimately interested in helping create environments of sustainability/prosperity, inclusiveness, social entrepreneurship, community leadership, and respect for the historic and cultural fabric of a community. Before joining the Recrear team Valerie worked for the municipal government of New Orleans managing the international affairs of Mayor Landrieu’s Office.

year of Global Politics studies at Carleton University. Her passion for figuring out people and how the world works has most recently led her to do an internship with the Gender Unit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Botswana. This passion has also moti-vated her in her role managing the human resources team of AIESEC Carleton, a chapter of the world’s largest student run organization. Gillian is currently involved in organizing a conference for 250 student delegates taking place this fall. She has a love for confer-ences and believes strongly that the ideas and energy generated during conferences can have powerful rip-pling effects.

Gillian has grown to believe that anyone can achieve great things if they have cultivated the will in themselves and have the tools at hand to do so. She can’t wait to continue her learning with Recrear!
