If yourweak readers can experience success at the isolated skills of recorder playing, they will be less likely to give up in frustration when the skills are all put together in performance. Sightreading is one of the most important skills. Make note readingfun!

Floor Staff Games

Floor staff games are fun for all students to play --- even students who may be excellent note readers, like to play the games.

Note Names Jump The teacher calls out a line note - E, G, B, D, F - and the students jump to the line that she calls. To play this as an elimination game (optional), the last child to land on the line that is called isout.

Note Name Race Divide the class into two (or three) groups. Line the groups up, about 6-10 feet awayfrom the musical staff. Name a note from the staff and specify if it is on a line or in a space. For example,G on a line. Say “Go!” before students are allowed to run. The first student from each line runs to the Gline. The first student to stand on the G line is the winner.

The music rug shown below is a wonderful floor staff! Information on the music rug can be found at Themes & Variations

A music rug makes a wonderful floor staff, but if that isnʼt in the budget, create one out of painters tape, black electrical tape, or clear carpet runner.

Mad Minutes

Have your students complete Mad Minutes each recorder class. These are timed drills for practising naming notes. The goal is tohave instant recall of the note names. Classroom teachers usethese to help students develop instant recall of math facts - the same principal applies to learning letter names. Make your own mad minutes, or use the ones that are given in the Recorder Resource Kit 1. In the Recorder Kit 1 PowerPoint, themad minutes are given, along with the answer keys for easy marking.

The easiest way to mark mad minutes, is to have the students exchange papers, then have the class read in unison, the letter names that are written under the notes. If they say a letter thatdoesn't match what the rest of the class is saying, they should circle that note. Having the students correct these in class savesthe teacher a lot of marking!
