The clever songwriter -performer in-cludes her latest compositions on thisdeck along with "Scarlet Ribbons" and"It Ain't Necessarily So." Gale remainsa recording artist true to herself and herideas. Adds rock backing to her sound.

JACQUELINE KENNEDYDOCUMENTARY-Audio FidelityAFLP 703.

The Jackie Kennedy story on record, including many of the speeches she gaveas First Lady, should have wide ap-peal. Extremely somber orchestra un-derscores the narrative. Many interest-ing facts about the fascinating lady areincluded from childhood onward.

A GROOVY KIND OF LOVETHE MINDBENDERS-Fontana MGF 27554; SRF 67554.

The recent chart topping singleprompted this album of pleasant rockand roll sounds. All the tunes are thegroovy kind. Most of them are not toofamiliar and maybe another single willcome out of the package.

BILL BLACK'S COMBO PLAYS ALL -TIMERSIII. 12032; SHL 32032.

"Hey, Good Lookin'," "TogetherAgain," "Anytime," "Your CheatingHeart," "I Walk the Line" and othercountry greats get the great Bill Blackonce-over smartly on this package. Theorgan takes the lead and sounds terriffic.

VIVA BOB MOORE

Hickory 131.South of the border sounds done very

up-to-date. Bob plays the bass in additionto having arranged the pieces for spicyyet relaxing listening. "Skokiaan," "Oh,Lonesome Me," "Tennessee Waltz," "TCan't Stop Loving You," mucho mas.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

BUDDY STARCHER-Decca DL (7)4796.This guy with two singles clicking-

"History Repeats Itself" and "Day ofDecision"-should find himself with aclick album here. Many of the songs arepatriotic odes, meant to be listened toin the light of today's political strife.

CAMPUSOLOGYTHE FIREBALLS-Dot DLP 3709:DLP 25709.

Adept musicians here get the beatgoing for some unrelenting dance cuts. The songs are new for the most part-even "In the Mood" takes on a new soundas reinterpreted by the fellows. The gui-tars wail away on "Campusology,""Gently, Gently," others.

BAREFOOTIN'

THE TRIBESMEN-HBR HLP 8507;HST 9507.

This clan is making noise around thecharts and will make more with packageof ditties written to be danced to. "Hip -shaking," "After Hour Man," "Bags"and more contribute to the overall beateffect. Should score with teens.

PATTY WATERS SINGSESP 1025 (m -s).

The gal sings and moans and sighs andwails and screams and makes soundslisteners have probably never heard onrecord before. Very emotional, very tor-tuous soul singing. Patty wrote all thesongs and conceived the "Black is theColor . . . " slice. Something else.

TRIVIA

SOUNDTRACKWHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?

SOUNDTRACK-Warner Bros. W(S)1656.Alex North penned the moody music

for the film version of the explosiveEdward Albee play. Richard Burton andElizabeth Taylor appear as the Bicker -sons on the album. This is going to bethe blockbuster movie of the summer.Disk should latch on.

In English ...Among the Latin recording engineers now employed by some

of the big recording studios in New York, we must mentionFred Weinberg. Colombian born Fred is an ex -musician whocan handle any recording of a small or large group, and he doesa great job. We met him at National Recording (Bryant Park)Studios, and we think the combination is perfect, for there theyhave a great big studio and a great engineer who knows how, especially when splicing and editing are necessary.

And talking of engineers, there's the wonderful Tony May.Tony, who is employed by the newly established Sounds OffBroadway Studios, is doing mixing especially on Latin LPs, andalthough he is not a Latin himself, the feeling must be there, forthey come out great. We listen to the latest Ricardo Ray LP onAlegre and we must take our hat off to everyone involved.

Ismael Rivera will be in New York on June 24, a returnto his fans who have missed him for almost four years. We aretold that there are welcoming preparations in Puerto Rico, forthe day Ismael arrives there. We are sorry to hear that CatalinaRolon, the great Puerto Rican impresario, was the victim of ahold-up on a recent Saturday night after promoting a dance inSanta Cruz, in his native Puerto Rico, that has him in a coma forover a week at the Plebisteriano Hospital in San Juan. The latest release by Tico is an album entitled "Pedrito Ricoen Nuevo York" by a singer from Spain who previously reacheda million seller a few years ago. Pedrito is nick -named "TheAngel From Spain" and the LP contains two of the most popularsongs that sold close to the million mark: "La Perrita Pequinesa"and "El Escapulario."

Beta Distribuitors announced, and we confirmed it with theprincipal, that Eddie Echevarria has been added to his staff asgeneral manager of the Latin label distribution in New York.Eddie was with Consolidated One Stop of New York since it wasstarted, and previously with Cosnat Distributors for 10 years.Another goody for Johnny Helanca.

WHERE IT'S AT

BY KAL RUDMAN

Flash smash tip: Bob Robin, the nice guy who gave you"Barefootin"' in partnership with "Carolina Roadrunner" Mar-shall Sehorn, have come up with the next big R&B smash ontheir new label, Deesu. It's "May 1" by the Zodiacs and alreadyis a giant through the Carolinas. Robin should have a giantjazz-R&B instrumental with "Bird Brain" by James Rivers onthe Eight -Ball label. Joel Dorn, a top jazz deejay at WHAT -FM,says Rivers sounds like a soul -funk Roland Kirk. Jazz-R&Binstrumentals seem to be the hottest trend in programmingas "Misty." Groove Holmes, has become a smash in New York

and Philly, both single and LP.It goes without saying that the new Dionne

Warwick, "Trains and Boats and Planes," isan absolute instant smash. Scepter is thrilledwith the tremendous sales on "Go Go Train,"Jackie Paine, and the gigantic sales on"That's Enough," Roscoe Robinson. Theyshould have a big one nationally with a NewYork City Top 5 instrumental, "Fats Shake'Em Up," Fats Lewis.

Lucky Cordell was playing Chuck Berry's "Havana Moon"as an oldie on WVON, Chicago, and getting great listener andhop response. So Chess re-released it and it is now Top 5there . . . "United," Intruders, Gamble is #1 in Philly, and gotthe "Soul Sound" at KGFJ, L.A., and has no trouble breakingin any market where it gets some play . . . Ray Charles has astone giant.

Rudman's Grooves to Moove: Gladys Knight has the WVONPick and the record will be a smash in both markets for LarryMaxwell . .. The new J. J. Barnes, "Say It," is, as Berry Gordywould say, "Faaantastic" . . . "A Long Way Home," GarnetMimms, is an automatic hit . . . "Philly Freeze," Alvin Cash, has George Leiner smiling as everyone has picked it . . . Thelong-term side on the Miracles is "Be My Love" and it's another"Tracks of My Tears." Pray the pop stations don't get hipto your secrets, so you can have a gigantic "salt and pepper"listening audience these happy, swingin' summer days!

As predicted, "Open the Door," Darrell Banks, Revilot, hasturned into a giant . . . Everyone says that "Sweet Dreams,"Mighty Sam, Amy, is a stone smash . . . Ditto for "LonelySoldier," Mike Williams, which has picks and play from every-one, has thrilled Chatty Hatty . . . Manhattans are sellingplenty records. As Howard Bednoe, All -State, Chicago, says,"Those `Doowop' records will always sell big" . . . Ed Wrightis very pleased at the way "No Time For You," O'Jays, Imperial, broke wide open in Cleveland. Spellbinders are now Top 10in Cleveland. Good Sales in Cleveland : Intertains; WilliamBell; Broadways; Johnny Copeland. Les Anderson of WABQlikes "Backscratcher," Frank Frost . . . Ken Hawkins, WJMO,likes: Alvin Cash; Joe Blue; Big Maybelle; Jackie Paine;Mighty Sam. The Roscoe Robinson looks very large. Pick: "ICan't Make It," Prophets . . . Walter Jackson big in Chicagoand Pittsburgh.

Bert Berns is thrilled with the reaction to his first releaseon his new R&B label, Shout: "Talk of the Grapevine," DonaldHeight. Bert has announced that Burke Johnson, former PD ofWAOK, Atlanta, will be handling the promotion of the recordnationally. Burke will continue to handle all his other linesin the Southeast. Congrats to Burke on his tremendous suc-cess as an independent promotion man . . . Good reaction tothe Don Covay, "You Put Something On Me" . . . Rocky G ofWWRL loves the Chuck Carter on Brunswick, "Pretty LittleBrown Skin Girl." This has always been Rocky's descriptionof his two sweet little daughters.

WCHB, Detroit, Hits: "United," Intruders; Mabel John;Darrell Banks; Bobby Bland; Van Dykes; Rex Garvin . . .

Berns Into R&BWith Bang:

ShoutNEW YORK-Now that Bang

Records is established as astrong independent pop label,Bert Berns has founded "by pop-ular demand" an r/b label-Shout.

Berns told Record World lastweek he's been wanting to makethe move for a long time, sincehe feels his strongest and long-est affinity is with the rhythmand blues field.

The label, which'll have thesame distribs as Bang (withpossibly a few exceptions), hasits first release on the marketnow-Donald Height's "The Talkof the Grapevine."

Other label contractees as ofnow are Roy "C," who'll have arelease within the next threeweeks, and Bobby Harris. Bernswill be looking to nurture otherlabel talent as well. He alsowants to look around for strongr/b masters, which he hopes topick up "where hits are produced-Memphis, Muscle Shoals."

After 'Attitude'With New Label

With his new label, Bernswants to establish "an attitude"conducive to building r/b prod-uct and he defines the right atti-tude as getting behind an artistthrough a series of projects asopposed to "throwing out onesingle to see if it clicks or not."

Berns noted that albums willfollow successful singles - atleast at the start of things.

The r/b master plans to pro-duce sides himself and also toencourage young r/b producersin their work.

"R and b," Berns said, "isgrowing and there aren't enoughcompanies to absorb this growth. We plan to be one."

is a giant R&B nationally. Hester tells me that Frank Barrowhas joined their staff replacing Ray Henderson who has goneto WCHB-Detroit . . . Other personnel changes . . . MikePayne has left KYOK-Houston and joined Ed Wright at WABQ-Cleveland as drive time man and assistant Program Director. . . We are proud that we had a little bit to do with CurtisTroub joining (as drive time man) WJMO-Cleveland. Curtisjust left KDAY-L.A. which has gone all -news. Scott Gorman, formerly of KDAY, has joined the Rollins chain sister stationWBEE-Chicago as morning man. He replaced Joe Cobb whomoved over to WVON-Chi as a.m. man.

He meant thathe is discovering these djs for himself for the first time, andalthough he was Program Director of a big station in Atlanta.he was never aware of these people in the secondary markets.By going into these cities for the first time, he is learninghow active R&B is throughout the South. Burke stated thatthe many national field promotion men are doing a marvelousjob of getting their manufacturers' records to many townswhere there are plenty of sales that are often credited tothe nearest big city.

24 RECORD WORLD -June 25, 1966

KAL RUDMAN'S

Money MusicDionne Warwick, no surprise, has another instant giant with

"Trains and Boats and Planes." Scepter is swinging with heftysales on Jackie Paine's "Go Go Train," plus "That's Enough,"Roscoe Robinson. They should also have a big one nationally withthe giant instrumental from NYC, "Fats Shakes 'Em Up," by FatsLewis.

I am certain that Cosmo and Bob Robin of Dover and WhiteCliff Music of New Orleans will have no trouble collecting ontheir unbelievable "Barefootin'," because it looks like they'vecome up with a left -field giant. The No. 1 record with Bob Baker,WKIX-Raleigh, N.C., is their fantastic new record called "MayI" by the Zodiacs on Deesu (in which they are partners withMarshall Sehorn and Allan Touissant). Heavy confirmation hascome in from Jack Gale, WAYS and WGIV, Charlotte, N.C., alsoWilmington, N.C., and Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Shelby Singleton flashes that "The Joker Went Wild," BrianHyland, Philips, is heavily back -ordered in New York City (viaWMCA) and many other areas.

The reputation of Howard "Little Napoleon" Bednoe of All -State, Chicago, as a top promo man is known across the land.He and I discussed why "Hanky Panky," Shondells (a four -year -old Ellie Greenwich -Jeff Barry record) is now certain #1. Howiequestioned a lot of kids in Chicago. They said that they havegotten tired of so many of the folk-rock tunes they have beenfed all winter: "They are too complicated to dance to." It issummertime and they are not home listening, but are out at thepools and beaches, and they want good old simple rock and rolland R&B with a simple hard beat for dancing. The timing of"Hanky Panky" was perfect, and the sales figures are monstrous.A lot of brain -washed music directors just can't believe such asimple record can go so large. I have a feeling that the productcoming out this summer will sound a lot like the vintage summerof 1959.

The next shocker is the emergence of a recent medium R&Bhit, "Searching For My Love," Bobby Moore, Checker, as asmashing #1 giant in the home of folk-rock, L.A.; and, of course,a long list of pop stations are now discovering or re -discoveringthis record with big picks. The only difference between andamong this R&B hit and the many others that blew past the popstations is that this one was really played pop thanks to a greatpromo man in L.A., Stan Bly of California Distributors . . . Theairplay on the Johnny Rivers version of the gut -bucket blues,"Muddy Water," is sensational, and it's a solid hit . . . TheTemptations have a smash and it's king at the hops and pools.

Sam the Sham is a smash . . . Tommy McLain and CrispianSt. Peters have Harold Lipsius of Jamie smiling . . . "SolitaryMan," Neil Diamond, is breaking large . . . We kept telling youthat "Sweet Pea," Tommy Roe, was a smash. Thanks to PaulDrew, WQXI, Atlanta, Memphis, and Matty Singer of Philadel-phia (who broke it in Carlisle, Pa.) for showing us all the way.Paul has sold his Southern Music Survey to Dick Reus in Sumpter,S.C.

"See You In September," Happenings, breaking in New England. . . "Wild Thing," Troggs, is a smash, just like in England . . .

"Happy Summer Days," Ronnie Dove, has Joe Kolsky on "Cloud10" which is way above "9" . . . New England broke "David'sMood," Jack Eely, Bang, and now Cleveland and other marketsare rolling. The sales are there and I have made Bert Berns abeliever. This is a proven hit side, especially in the summerseason, and will get immediate reaction. We've been mentioningthis side for many, many weeks, and feel we are right about thisrecord . . . The Young Rascals and Shadows of Knight look verystrong . . . Paul Revere has an automatic . . . The hit -picking earof Iry Biegel feels that Atco has a smash in the CKLW, Detroit,Pick of "Spring Fever," Tony Pass . . . "United," Intruders,Gamble, is responding well to pop play and is the "Chapel ofLove" of 1966 . . . "Just Walk In My Shoes," Gladys Knight, more than merits a good pop shot . . . "Hand Jive," Strangeloves,is already "King of the Beaches" . . . "Tell Her," Dean Parrish, broke fast in N.Y.C. with all stations wailing . . . Shangri-laslook great . . . "All These Things," Uniques, is a good Southernhit.

BY DEL SHIELDS

Quartette Tres Bien Very Well IndeedWhen a group of jazz mu-

sicians shakes hands followinga swinging set, displaying arare feeling of love and unityas the ball teams do prior totaking the field or the court, itbears looking into.

The opportunity came thisweek for this columnist whenthe Decca recording artists, the Quartette Tres Bien, slip-ped quietly into New York fora record date.

It was a couple of years agowhen Bill Cosby, the other halfof the "I Spy" video team, pulled my coat and told meabout a together group he hadheard in California with theuncommon name of QuartetteTres Bien. Bill, a former drum-mer before embarking on acomedy career, is pretty muchin with what happens musi-cally. Therefore, we could nottake his recommendationlightly.

It was a few weeks laterwhen we heard the group on its"Kilimanjaro" album and werecalled the excitement of BillCosby and discovered in a mat-ter of minutes why he was soimpressed.

My introduction to the groupwas one of instant approval asI discovered the group was say-ing beautiful things in a mostmelodic and exciting way.

We, too, could not help butshout our praises for the groupand played their album overand over on our radio show.

But it was not until thisweek that we had the chance tosit and hear the group in per-son.

More Than ReadyThe Quartette Tres Bien rep-

resents a plethora of jazzgroups who musically are morethan ready, polished andtalented but have not suc-ceeded in breaking through tothe mass music audience whobuy the records and are re-sponsible for the real breadand butter of the artists.

Upon hearing the group inperson, I could not help butrealize that this group is long, long, long overdue. The Quar-tette Tres Bien is very well in-deed.

They consist of a piano, bassand drums combination withadded congo drums. But thecongos are fully integrated in-to the group as opposed to anadded embellishment.

What kind of music doesthe group offer? It is filledwith emotion, power, climaxesand melody. In Jeter Thomp-son, the pianist, there is a defi-nite Ahmad Jamal influence;Richard Simmons, the bassplayer, is a strong walker;Albert St. James is a tastefuland most imaginative creatoron percussion and Percy James, the congo player, sits behinda trio of congo drums with hisset of bongos attached to hisstool between his legs.

And it is Percy who is thesurprise. His playing is skill-ful while never interferingwith the drummer. This in it-self is no easy task. In fact,as you look back there havebeen few successful attemptswith the addition of the congodrums. With the QTB theyhave shown that the congos arenot window dressing but canbecome an equal member intheir family.

The group is out of St. Louisbut what is of great concernto most jazz disk jockeys isthat this is a group that mustand should be heard. They aresimply too good not to beamong the leading jazz sellers.

Shorter Tunes?Milt Gabler, VP of A & R

at Decca, said that he felt ifthe group recorded tunes ofshorter length (which is alwaysthe complaint attached to jazzpersonnel), they would receivemore air play and with the ex-posure could become really big.

We will not argue the meritsof this statement. With hun-dreds of jazz disk jockeysacross the nation, it seems thatall we need really is to tellthem that this group is reallytogether and deserves to beheard.

Two of its albums on Decca,"Kilamanjaro" and "Sky High,"contain cuts of reasonablelength and are ideally suitedfor any hip show that catersto good music lovers or thejazz -oriented buffs. From our

Doc Severinsen, currently at BasinSt. East and whose latest Com-mand release "Mothers and Daugh-ters" is climbing the charts, gavea free concert at Basin Street ona recent Saturday. Atlantic Inks ManceJazz pianist Junior Mance

was signed to a long term con-tract by Atlantic Records thisweek.

His first album on Atlanticwill be recorded shortly. Nego-tiations were handled by Atlan-tic Vice President Nesuhi Erte-gun.

experience we have discoveredthat all that is needed to ex-pose the product is to tell thejocks, here is something thatneeds to be a part of yourshow.

In person the group is excit-ing. They will attract youwith the rarely seen picture offour clean shaven heads. Butdon't let the clean heads foolyou. They are on the stand asfour musically competent mu-sicians who know their art andknow how to entertain.

We are looking forward tothe release of their new album. There is every indication thatthe Quartette Tres Bien is wellon its way to joining that selectcompany of jazz artists whoare taking care of business andfind their records on the charts.

tributors, was one of the funnier sights in the sack race foradults that was won by Monument's Chuck Chellman. Highlightof the event was the presentation of a beautiful silverware setto Tommy Hill and his lovely bride, Edith Casey. Tommy hadjust gotten married the night before and left immediately afterthe picnic on a honeymoon trip to Miami Beach. Don Pierce, HalNeely and Jim Wilson are to be congratulated on a wonderfulSunday afternoon picnic.

The fabulous Festival of Music, starring Boots Randolph, ChetAtkins and Floyd Cramer, invaded Atlanta's Chastain Park lastweek and played to overflow crowds. They were joined by thegreat Pete Fountain and his group out of New Orleans, andbelieve me this turned into one of the swingingest affairs seenor heard in that part of the country in quite some time!

Little Jimmie Dickens and a blue-chip package of countrymusic artists did turnaway business June 4 in Memphis. Thehuge crowd began assembling at 4 in the afternoon and com-pletely filled the huge Ellis Auditorium prior to showtime. Fea-tured on the show with Dickens were Merle Travis, GeorgeMorgan, Lefty Frizzell and Grandpa Jones.

RCA Victor's Don Bowman just returned from an extensivetour of Europe. Don's offhand comment about English humor was,"Folks over there don't laugh at the same things Americansdon't think are funny either!" Don arrived stateside just in timeto see his "Giddyup Donuts" parody sail into the charts.

Mercury's Roy Drusky has been picked to Christen a newcountry music nitery on Chicago's South Side. The club, whichhopes to catch some of the magic quality which has pushed theRivoli over the top, is called "The G -Bar -G Club."

Epic's David Houston has one of the best records of his careergoing for him right now in "Almost Persuaded." It's one of thefinest jobs of singing we've heard this young man do. Reportsfrom Epic indicate 8,000 sales in the Atlanta area. The onlycountry record to top it recently is the Jeannie Seely recordingof "Don't Touch Me," which is now well over 11,000 in Atlanta!

Montilla gave their "Disco de Oro" award to exclusive record-ing star Raril Marrero, whose hit "Rondando Tu Esquina" hassold by the thousands, in a cocktail party at their new store, located in 14th St. and 7th Avenue in Manhattan, named SpanishWorld Records . . . "La Lupe y su Alma Venezolana," a Ticorecording, is selling niftily . . . We attended another cocktailparty, which El Liborio Restaurant offered to the press on theoccasion of La Lupe's last performance in this restaurant. LaLupe travelled to Venezuela, and will be back in New York nextweek .. . Ansonia released a new album by Blanca Iris Vilafarie,in which she sings "Ya Nada Me Importa," "Paso Falso," "SoyMujer," "Estorbo" and others . . . They also released a newalbum by Joe Valle, entitled "Beso Robado" . . . Trio de Oro'slatest album, released by Remo last week, is doing very well.In this LP trio interpreted "Triunfamos," "Mis Noches SinTi," "En el Tronco de un Arbol," "El Toro y la Luna" and others. . . It is a very good recording and promises to be a best seller

Tico will release this week an album by Pedrito Rico, singing"Perrita Pekinesa," "El Escapulario," "El Mundo" and others .. .

Sales on Blanca Rosa Gil's album, containing "Hambre," areexpected to go high. It is a Velvet release, which also just re-leased "Cuando Vivas Conmigo" by Felipe Pirela . . . Gema willhave on the market in a few weeks a new record by RobertoLedesma . . . The recordings of Julio Angel, "El Diamante" andLucecita Benitez on Rico -Vox are moving very satisfactory inNew York ... "Pirate recordings" have become very troublesomein the Latin American market. The latest are: Felipe Pirela'shits, copied from several albums of this artist and a single con-taining "El Pito" (I'll Never Go Back to Georgia) and "ArrimatePa'Ca" by Broadway Orchestra, which are hits. We heard thata group of very important recording companies and distributorsare planning to have a meeting to stop the small dealers frombuying pirate recordings . . . Jack Goodman from Spanoramic ishappy because the latest releases by Juan Legido are selling big. . . Fernando Albuerne also recorded "Hambre" and "CuandoVivas Conmigo," which are selling well . . . RCA released analbum by Fernando Valades titled "Homenaje al Caribe, Centroy Sudamerica y Mejico." It is a shame that RCA Latin recordsare not as well promoted in New York as they deserve . . .

"Momentos Intimos" by Roberto Yantis (Columbia) is sellingnicely .. . A new album by Mariano Merceron had been releasedby RCA. They titled it "Los Freeways de Mariano Merceron,"and it is good!
