The summer has passed quickly with the camps, New Student Orientations, and a variety of other organizations that have utilized our wonderful facility here at the Campus Recreation Center. I thank you, our members, for being understanding and accommodating to the many visitors that had the opportunity to experience UAB this summer. The facility is truly a showcase for the campus and our hope is that every visitor and member will have a great experience in our facility. It is with mixed emotions that I announce Jenny Babl’s resignation from her position as the Assistant Director of Marketing. It saddens me to see Jenny leave after seven great years of working for UAB and Campus Recreation, but I am extremely happy that she will have the opportunity to stay home with her two year old Jonah and her new little one expected in November. Jenny was a great staff member and team player not only in Campus Recreation, but around the UAB campus. On the other hand, we welcome our newest staff member Jenn Probert to the Campus Recreation staff as the Assistant Director of Marketing. She comes from Ventura, California. She received her Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing Administration and Master of Science in Recreational Sports Management from California State University, Northridge. Jenn was also a former collegiate volleyball player at Cal State Northridge. So please help us give Jenn a big “southern” welcome to the great state of Alabama! To contact her you can email her at [email protected] or give her a call at 205-996-4887. Please pay special attention to the locker renewal process that ends August 31st as we will be cleaning out lockers the first weekend of September and will be going down the waiting list starting the week of September 6th. Also, after researching our parking situation for our current members, we have made some modifications that are detailed in this newsletter that will go into effect on Monday, August 22nd, 2011. The only adjustment from this summer is that Campus Recreation will validate and pay for up to two hours of parking while using the Campus Recreation Center. Cost for hours beyond those first two hours will be the responsibility for the member to pay when exiting the parking deck. If you have any questions or concerns, you can find more information on the Campus Recreation website at www.uab.edu/campusreccenter. Again, if there is anything that we need to address or to better serve you, our patrons or visitors, please feel free to contact any of our staff or fill out a comment card located online or at the front desk. You are always welcome to contact me directly at [email protected], my direct line is 205-996-4909, or stop by my office.

The only adjustment from this summer is that Campus Recreation will validate and pay for up to two hours of parking while using the Campus Recreation Center. aquatiCs:

Summertime is fun time, but we can’t forget about how important healthy water is. Here are a few reminders for keeping our pool clean as the summer comes to an end:

1) Everyone, including infants & small children must shower before entering the pool and spa. 2) “Swim diapers“ are mandatory for non-potty trained infants and children. 3) Diapers should not be changed on the deck & any incident involving a diaper change needs to include warm, soapy water.4) The Spa is not a kiddy pool. It has a therapeutic temperature of 104 which can have an adverse effect on infants and small children. Jefferson County Health Department recommends a 15 minute maximum usage time for participants of any age.

learn to swim proGram! The adult Learn to Swim program teaches aquatic and personal water safety skills so that participants can be safe in, on and around water and swim well. The classes are taught in six progressing levels. As the levels increase, participants learn to refine the different strokes and build endurance. Each level includes exit skills assessments that put together many of the skills learned in the level.

Skills are categorized in the following way in Levels1-5: Water Entry and Exit, Breath Control and Submerging, Buoyancy, Changing Direction and Position, Treading, Swim on Front, Back and Side and Water Safety. Level 6 focuses on refining strokes and turns and building endurance.

Registration for CRCT members is $50 and $80 for non-members. For more information or to register, visit our website at www.uab.edu/campusreccenter or contact Don Sanders at 205-996-5037 or [email protected].

tips to avoid the freshman 15!• To avoid the mid-morning sugar cravings and unnecessary trip to the vending machine keep healthy snack options like: fresh fruit, breads (toast, bagels etc), and easy to grab Yoplait Gogurts in your dorm room for when you’re on the run.

• Avoid vending machines and instead reach for a healthy snack you have on hand in your dorm room such as popcorn, low-fat string cheese or trail mix.

• Limit your fast food intake and go to healthier options like Subway, Panera or Jason’s Deli. When you do eat fast food, substitute french fries for a side salad and try the grilled sandwiches instead of the high fat fried meats. When ordering pizza, try getting healthy pizza toppings like tomato, mushrooms or bell peppers. Also, instead of pepperoni, order Canadian bacon - it’s just as good and half the fat!

• Try substituting Crystal Light for soda and/or juice. Just by cutting out sugar sweetened beverages a person can lose as much as 5-10 lbs.

• Every person needs about two liters of water per day to stay fully hydrated, that’s about eight 8oz glasses of water per day. If you are physically active, remember that after physical activity you need about 16 oz of water to rehydrate.

• Eating a well balanced diet of protein, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and fats while in college can allow you to be a better student and focus more while in the class room.
