August 17The International Society for Animal Rights raises awareness on pet overpopulation each year on the third Saturday of August. Organizations from around the world join ISAR by participating with candle-light vigils, dog walks, adopt-a-thons, open houses, spay/neuter clinics, microchip clinics, blessings of the animals, and heartfelt speeches.

“By coming together on International Homeless Animals’ Day you can support ISAR in letting the world know we will not tolerate the sense-less killing that continues to take the lives of innocent dogs, cats, puppies and kittens simply because there are not enough good homes for them. This is a diff erent type of rescue story but truly an amazing display of tenacity and devotion on the canine front. Sophie is a 3yr old Australian Catt le Dog (Blue Heeler) who falls overboard on a family trip while sailing in the Great Barrier Reef. The Griffi th family thought Sophie was lost forever but, aft er swimming up to 24hrs in shark infested waters, Sophie manages to make it to a small island. Here she scavenged for food and survived for 5 long months before miraculously being rescued and reunited with her family.

Social media has been around for a relatively short while, but it has quickly become a fi xture of modern culture – on this point I think we can all agree. Look at

almost any ad campaign and you’ll see a “follow us on face-book” plea or some clever hashtag for legions of people to tweet. Social media has become an incredibly powerful tool for having real-time conversations that overcome the com-munication road blocks of old, such as geography and even time. Social media is a public square that never sleeps.

The online world of social media creates incredible opportu-nities to engage people and spread messages like never be-fore. In our case, it has helped promote animals in our care, our programs and services, and the clinics and events we’re hosting, while aff ording us opportunities to spread humane messaging staff members that our messaging would have this kind of reach by the end of the decade, they would prob-

In the world of Social Media

ably scoff in disbelief. It’s amazing how far communications have come in so litt le time. The Edmonton Humane Society has always tried to be an early adopter of social media platforms. We began building our Facebook, Twitt er, and YouTube audiences about 5 years ago, and we’ve kept pace with the changing trends in user habits and the ways in which people integrate social media into their lives. It hasn’t always been easy – to this day, no one claims to have social media completely fi gured out; but we’ve managed to grow a large and diverse following across sev-eral social media platforms that have, in recent years, come to include Instagram (a photography app), Vine (an app that allows users to make 6-second videos), and Google+, which essentially combines the best of Twitt er and Facebook, giving rising to something all its own.

impact of our social media presence (at least not yet), we know from anecdotal evidence that many people are drawn into our shelter because of EHS’ social media presence. Once people are through the door, they have the option to adopt a pet, purchase supplies from Bingo’s Pet Shop, make a do-nation in support of shelter animals, or just take note of our magnifi cent facility and let others in our community know about it. Whichever the outcome, it’s all good for our shelter and the animals in our care.

Adopting social media platforms and building audiences marked an important fi rst step. Now that our presence is es-tablished and we have people’s att ention, we’re focused on interaction with our audience. We off er pet-related advice, answer questions about our programs and services, share lighthearted moments, and even engage in or moderate seri-ous debate from time to time. Pet lovers are a passionate lot.

One of the best forms of interaction we get on social media involves those who’ve adopted companion animals from EHS and want to show how loved their new pets are in their new forever homes. For us, this reinforces our role as a place of new beginnings for animals, many of whom come into our care as anonymous creatures, with histories unknown. It’s in-describably satisfying to see a dog in his new life, going on nature walks, swimming in a lake, playing with other dogs at the dog park, or just lazing in a sunny spot on the living room carpet. Or a cat, perched atop her own private scratch tower, batt ing at enrichment toys, or endearing people with her feline pretentions. Or a rabbit, chewing a favourite toy, hopping around a backyard, or dining – nibble by speedy nibble – on a leafy green. These are affi rming moments that validate why we’re here, serving as advocates and giving voice to animals who might not have it otherwise. Social me-dia makes this possible on a larger scale than ever before, and it allows all of us – EHS staff members and the public at large – to see the fulfi lment that shelter animals can bring to people’s lives. And it’s incredible.

was part Border Collie, which was a perfect mix for a perfect dog for Hal. That was 3½ years ago, and in that time both Hal and Chuck have grown together into quite the pair.

Charlie is incredibly in tune to Hal – howling when she cries, sitt ing patiently with her with a paw-of-support on her lap, or a litt le kiss check-in now and then. We don’t get to go out in public together much because he doesn’t have a litt le vest, but when we do Hal gets teth-ered to him and he patiently lets her tug at him, always keeping near to me. Hal is his charge, and Charlie takes his responsibility seriously (and lovingly). It turned out being rejected for a service dog was the best thing that could have happened to us.

In addition to Mr. Barquharson (and another Beagle Paws adoptee Karl Puppington), we opened our doors to foster animals last year which has been another won-derful experience for not only Hal, but her younger sis-ter as well. The way they see it, it is their job to give animals that have had a bad life a good life at our home until they can fi nd their forever home. Many paws and claws have gone through our doors already, and the girls have gained a great sense of responsibility and connect-edness to the world through caring for animals.

Autism can be very isolating. What makes it more dif-fi cult is Hal has to be home schooled, so always having a friend at home helps make life not so lonely. You hear talk of how a rescue dog is thankful to their owners, but these owners are thankful to their rescue dog. You made us bett er people, Charlie Barquharson. Thank-you.

Halina’s Autism has given us challenges right from her birth. From unending colic that pushed out an umbilical hernia, fear of elec-

trical appliances, low motor function, to the public meltdowns. Oh, the public meltdowns. We fi nally got referred for an Autism assessment when she was 3. Im-mediately I contacted the local Autism support group for help. They informed me of a service dog agency that could help us with the diffi culties we had going out in public. Mostly that Hal was growing - FAST - and I was running out of options to keep her near me. She was a serious fl ight risk. We sat on their waitlist for 9 months only to be told, aft er they brought a dog to our house, that we did not qualify because the kids were too small. Hal was heartbroken when the dog left our house. My husband and I were very upset. But while we were go-ing to be service dog-less, my daughter’s joy at a dog made us decide to get a regular-ol-pup. What we got was much more special than that.

We knew what kind of breed we were looking for and found Beagle Paws, a Canada-wide Beagle rescue or-ganization. Our local coordinator, May, met our family and got to understand what we were looking for in a dog. A litt le while later we were presented with a pup from Newfoundland, whom we adopted and named Charlie Barquharson. As he grew he revealed that he

This won’t be one of my regular articles, all nicely organized and writt en as an AP style news piece. You will get this one from my heart instead of my head, as my feelings on this matt er run very

deep inside of me.

As a young child dragging home broken and unwanted animals I could never have imagined it was some sort of calling for me. I never dreamed I would spend my adult years trying to save almost every unwanted pet I encountered. But here I am, in mid life, with a houseful of pets discarded by others, in a circle of friends who live just exactly as I do, trying to rescue the thrown away pets of the world.

Rescuing animals: we live it, eat it, sleep it, breathe it, and take it every-where we go with us. It’s a calling, a gut reaction, a determination to right the wrongs of others, and to save innocent lives as we speak out for those creatures that have no voice of their own.

Most of us live paycheck to paycheck and do without much so that our animals can eat and see the veterinarian. It’s no diff erent than being the parent of a pack of two legged toddlers. They need, we provide, and many times to the detriment of ourselves. But we do it all, with no regrets.

With the vast numbers of homeless pets in our nation today, we realize that we just can’t save them all, even though we try as we give it our best shot day aft er day.

Our hearts break a thousand times a week as we see animals eutha-nized because there is simply no place for them to go. We open our email accounts to people begging for help, looking for a place to re-

In the decade that I have been active with animal rescue, I have only seen a handful of rescuers actually be able to pull away and stay out of the scenario completely. Even those will admit it is a struggle to stand back and let others do the job. Though some have chosen to step back and stay out, the urge to save never goes away.

Why so diffi cult to leave all the craziness behind? Be-cause for most, being a rescuer is not a conscience choice we make. People just don’t wake up one morning and say “Wow. I think I will be an animal rescuer.” It’s a drive that lives inside of us and not something we have consciously made the choice to do. To save the life of an innocent is just a natural reaction for most, and we do it without batt ing an eye.

We go out and about and see an animal in distress and we automatically fl ock to it trying to fi x whatever ailment it may have, and if we can’t fi x it, we fi nd someone who can. We see abuse and instead of idly standing by, we react to stop whatever abuse might be occurring, and many times will do so without regard to our own well being. We get a call, or an email and know that on the other end there is a helpless animal that’s whole life is being thrown into uncertainty.

We’re a breed all our own. It’s an impulse for us and not something that we can shut off just because our hearts are aching and we just don’t think we can take anymore. We react like we breathe, without thinking to do it; it just hap-pens. And somehow the numbers we save keep us going even though the many we fail to save haunts us, always. It’s all a question of how much we can really take.

With 10,000 animals dying in shelters, every single day in the US alone, it’s hard to step back and pace oneself, but it’s something anyone in animal rescue must learn to do. We must learn to recognize the burn, step back a few paces, and fi nd a way to regroup before we hit that point of no return. A point we would forever regret.

I write this for all my fellow rescuers who understand ev-ery word, and for those of you out there who think we are all crazy and cannot fathom why we put ourselves through it.

We open our Facebook accounts only to scroll through pages and pages of pets needing homes, some who have suff ered starvation, illness, and abuse, and many who have died at the hands of heartless humans. Almost everywhere we venture outside of our homes we see pets in need. It never ends. The numbers are simply just too great.

Amongst the rescuing I have done, I’ve taken thousands of images of pets trying to get them recognized and into loving homes. In the midst of my fi ve page job description (when once employed by a shelter) it just boiled down to my doing whatever it took to help the animals, and I did it gladly, with no complaints. Some of the work was dirty, hot, cold, and many times heartbreaking. Budget cuts end-ed my employment with the shelter, as economics do so oft en with many programs in animal rescue. But having become known for my eff orts, working in rescue didn’t end with the job. It seldom does for any of us.

Continuing to work with animal rescue, volunteering any time and skills I can muster up, and being a shelter board member, I am blessed to work with some of the best people in the business. People who live, eat, and breathe animal rescue in the same fashion (or more so) than I do.

Being close to so many in this business, I see their mix of joy and disappointment on a regular basis and my heart breaks for them when they feel the burn of this calling; the burn deep inside of each of us when we have done every-thing right only to see an animal put down because no one wants it. The burn inside we feel when we’ve rescued one that’s been so ill that even with the fi nest medical care just isn’t strong enough to make it. The burn inside when we encounter animals that have been abused, and sometimes killed, by the hands of a human being. And to feel the fury of the latt er is a scorn like no other. It will make a person look at the human race through tainted eyes and make one cautious of almost everyone.

I watch my fellow rescuers struggle with the choices be-fore them when the burn happens, and it happens to every single one of us at one time or another. That point that we get to when we can’t see through the fury and the tears. When we can’t sleep at night for the atrocities we’ve seen that play over and over again in our heads. For the souls we’ve see in the eyes of needy animals who we’ve failed to save, even though we did everything in our power to do so.

Does one stay in rescue and do what can be done and be satisfi ed with the results? Or step away from the whole mess, stop checking email, shut off the phone and un-friend every rescuer, crossposter, shelter, on our Facebook

How long have you practiced veterinary medicine?

I graduated from the College of Vet-erinary and Animal Sceince in Kerala, India 21 years ago. I moved to Canada in 2004 and have been in small animal practice in Edmonton since.

Why did you become a vet?

I love animals, and I love helping peo-ple through healing their pets. In India especially the family dairy cow or the sheep dog is incredibly valuable to the family. And saving their livelihood by

The clinic is led by Dr. Koshy, a vet with more than 20 years of experience in not only routine patient care, but also several specialized proce-dures. It’s not hard to see that Dr. Koshy genuine-ly cares about animals, and he follows up on all of his patients throughout their recovery back to health. He is very dedicated to his work; spending over 50 hours a week at his clinic and he recently opened up a new vet clinic in Beaumont; Montrose Pet Clinic.

Clareview Casselman Pet Clinic prides itself on its commitment to promoting the human animal bond and on its partnerships with rescue groups that save homeless animals. They do presentations at the local daycare on Being Kind to Animals and hold fundraisers and adoption events for their res-cue group partners. They also volunteer at neigh-borhood pet parties such as Missing Mutt s Aware-ness Day and have a volunteer program for junior and senior high students eager to learn about a career in vet medicine. The clinic is open late on weeknights and on Saturdays and they do accept emergencies during their ex-tended hours of operation.

What are your main interests?

I’m very interested in small animal medicine. I like challenge and fulfi l-ment of solving a diffi cult medical case. I’m also taking continuing educa-tion in homeopathic medicine. There are many homeopathic treatments that were commonly done in India and were very eff ective and I want to educate myself on these treatments.

What did you do before opening your clinic?

I worked at Morinville Veterinary Clinic for 3 ½ years aft er receiving my Canadian certifi cate. I also worked for a few years at Tudor Glen Veterinary Hospital while I was going through

my Canadian certifi cation. In India I worked for the Kerala provincial gov-ernment.

As the song goes, it’s a long way to Tipperary, but in this case it’s a long way to Sarajevo, Bosnia where this story begins.

Miki, now known as Bos was discovered wandering the streets of Sarajevo blind, half deaf and was de-scribed as “very dirty, stinky and badly matt ed” by his rescuer. Unable to turn away to the plight of this litt le dog, that sported an ear tag to signify he was a home-less street dog and had received a rabies vaccination, she decided to set the wheels in motion for Bos’ big trip and a new life in North America.

It took one and half months of boarding and quaran-tine before his journey could begin and during that time he received his vaccinations, was neutered. It provided Bos with the time to become healthier and gain some weight.

For his rescuer, paying Bos’ bills was one thing, but actually housing him and providing a forever home in Canada was another. His rescuer didn’t really have a plan for Bos and as time grew closer panic set in. July 2nd, the day before Bos was due to arrive at Van-couver’s airport, she placed an ad on Used BC, a site

Dianne McKerrell, an employee of Used BC, fl agged the ad that contained the desperate plea for help and sent it to her sister, Trish in Calgary an Animal Rescue Transfer System (ARTS) foster. ARTS aft er hearing all that the dog had gone through decided Bos should take to the skies once more and be transported to Calgary and into their care. Bos oblivious to his itinerary left for Vancouver from Sarajevo July 3rd and by July 4th Linda at ARTS Air jumped into action - by the morn-ing of July 5 Patt an ARTS Air volunteer was ready to fl y Bos yet another 677 air kilometers to Calgary.

No sooner had Bos landed he was whisked away for his complimentary veterinary exam at Southpointe

Pet Hospital where they removed his ear tag the fi rst real sign that Bos was on his way to becoming a wel-comed member of our companion canine community. The day was not done and off Bos went to meet Hailey Seidel of Bowdog a company specializing in boarding, walking and grooming of dogs in the Calgary area for his free complimentary makeover.

Bos is now sett ling into life as a loved companion pet foster, despite his trauma induced blindness he has learned to negotiate stairs and according to his foster mom knows exactly the location of the fridge!

Darlyn

Darlyn was fi rst featured in our April/May edition.

“DarLyn found herself in the animal care system in her senior years. Why? Well that question may remain a mystery. Her personality though demonstates a dog that has been loved through her years which makes her situa-tion even more puzzling.”

The above paragraph outlining Daralyn’s situation still remains a mystery, but there’s a new life for

her now. When Darlyn fi rst arrived at Animal Res-cue Transfer System (ARTS) she also had concerning medical issues and was forever staring at her foster mom’s gate like she was waiting for someone. Well that someone never came, but today ARTS says she is a new dog. Through good nutrition and lots of love Darlyn has exceeded their expectations and is now ready for adoption.
