Dear Editor Residents Beware I write following the note from the previous journal warning us of theft of bins from gardens. On Sunday 1st May our 5year old daughter’s scooter was taken from outside our back kitchen door, under the car port whilst we were out for the day. It was second hand – but had only recently been given to her by her Grandpa, as you might imagine she was very upset. Especially at the thought of ‘Robbers’ in our village. We too searched the village, the park side hedges but have never found the scooter. If anyone has ‘borrowed’ a scooter we would be most grateful if they would return it to us. If anyone is aware of a friend or child who has recently mysteriously gained a scooter, perhaps they could ask them to return it? It is a silver / black 2 wheel in line scooter, a bit rusty but in working order, with handle bars adjustable to suit small children and adults. Whilst to some the taking of other peoples things may seem just a bit of fun – to most of us it is a great concern that our village becomes a place less safe in which to live. Jo Lydon

Details of the project will be announced later but, if you just can’t wait to find out and you’re interested in helping with some sewing, please give me a call or e-mail [email protected]. So why have they changed the Bible? This year there are national celebrations going on to mark the 400th anniversary the King James (“Authorised”) translation of the Bible into English. As I’ve written in previous Journal editions, it is magnificently written, and has had a huge influence on our national life. So why have the churches in the English-speaking world been working away producing so many modern translations over the last few decades, if the King James Bible (KJV) is so good? One simple reason is that the KJV is just plain wrong at some points. It’s based on the documents which were available at the time of translation, but archaeology has since then

uncovered more, and we now have a better idea of what was written originally by the Bible’s writers - people like St Paul - themselves. So, for example, some of the last verses of Mark’s Gospel in the KJV re not in most modern versions, and almost certainly were not originally written as part of Mark’s Gospel. Secondly, language has changed, and does not mean now what it did 400 years ago. When Jesus, in Matthew 9:14 in the KJV says: “suffer the little children”, he is most certainly not asking for children to suffer in our modern sense. 400 years ago, “suffer” meant “allow”, and Jesus was asking people to let the children come to him, not to make the children suffer! That’s only one example - there are plenty more. Thirdly, seeing the KJV as the only real translation of the Bible stops us realising that translation often cannot be exact. When you get to know any language well, you have to end up explaining, rather than just translating word for word. (Does anybody know the English for the French word “croissant”, for example?). Sometimes we can only get the full view by having more than one translation to compare. It’s not that one is right and another wrong, but rather that they can each give different slants on the full meaning. But perhaps most importantly, using the KJV subconsciously reinforces the idea that Christianity is out of date. Hearing the language of 400 years ago can encourage us to skip into

feeling that Christianity belongs in a previous generation. It’s not the only problem we face, of course. It can be nearly as bad if our view of Jesus is too coloured by old Hollywood films where a blue-eyed Christ drifts in a white robe across the screen while a choir sings, making almost no normal human contact with the people around! The Bible as we now have it is not 400, but nearly 2000 years old. It was absolutely up to date for those who first heard the original scrolls read out to them. 400 years ago the translators commissioned by King James tried to make the Bible speak in contemporary language for their own generation. And if we want to get in touch with the full meaning of the Bible, then reading and pondering at least one modern translation must be a central part of that task. But it’s a big book! So next time, I’ll suggest some ways in to the Bible, getting to the heart of the message and discovering just how inspiring it can be. Rev Mike Booker, Rector

Summer Scents Plants produce a great array of aromatic substances – in their leaves, flowers and even roots. When lightly brushed, leaves can emit aromas of mint, lemon, rose and even curry, while strongly scented flowers attract pollinating insects and sometimes small mammals. The Scented Garden at the Botanic Garden has been scooped out to create a protected well that collects and intensifies the scents of a great variety of plants chosen specifically to perfume the air. Along one side, the planting bed is raised so that all visitors can encounter the scented foliage and flowers at close range, including early bulbs such as Pheasant Eye, Hyacinth and Iris. A major planting overhaul in 2008 introduced cushions of herbs to create a textured base for choice shrub roses, including 'Sceptr'd Isle'. Right in the centre of this bowl of living pot-pourri, timber sleepers were piled to retain the south-side planting and create a lovely new place to sit and luxuriate in the fragrances of the Scented Garden. In the summer, the annual plants include old varieties of sweet peas scrambling up willow wigwams and many scented tobacco plants (Nicotiana). Scented-leaf Pelargonium species are included for the sharp scents released when the foliage is lightly brushed. The best time to enjoy the Scented Garden will be on one of the Garden’s evening openings this summer (every 1st and 3rd Wednesday to the end of August) when the fragrances strengthen as the light levels drop to attract night pollinators such as moths.

Juliet Day, Development Officer, Cambridge University Botanic Garden The Botanic Garden is open 10am – 6pm through the summer months, and until 9pm on 6 and 20 July, and until 8pm on 3 and 17 August. Admission is £4 (£3.50) or join the Friends & help the Garden grow! To discover this week’s Plant Picks from the Head of Horticulture, please visit the website at www.botanic.cam.ac.uk

Velux Windows The following has been sent in by a concerned resident and it is possible that it affects others in the village. Velux windows have issued a product recall notice over some of their windows manufactured 1997-2003. They say there is a chance the windows will shatter unexpectedly.

The Robsons have checked the serial number on the Velux window in their ensuite in Clare Drive, and it is definitely covered by the recall - according to Velux the window is potentially faulty. On this basis, it is very likely that other Velux windows in the ‘new’ houses in Caldecote are affected also.

Page 8: 2011 Aug-Sept Journal

Velux has a scheme in place to replace affected windows for free - we are going to get our window replaced. See www.velux-pw.co.uk for details of how to check whether your Velux window is affected, and how to claim a replacement.

Caldecote Primary School Community Governor required We are looking for a member of the local community who would be willing to spare a few hours each term to serve as a Community Governor on the school’s Governing Body. We are enthusiastic about the role that the school governors play in making sure that Caldecote Primary provides a safe and successful educational place for the children of

the village. The work carried out by the governors is varied and rewarding, and, as with all voluntary positions, the commitment to the school can be tailored to fit your availability, areas of expertise, and interests. No experience is required – only your enthusiasm and interest. While parents of pupils are not barred from serving as Community Governors, we are particularly keen to encourage other members of the community to be involved with the school in this way. If you would like to join us then please write to Mr Rod Warsap, the Head Teacher, at the school, or email [email protected], indicating why you would like to become a governor and the skills that you can bring. ______________________________

Friends of Caldecote

Church

… reviving our heritage

All the hard work of our enthusiastic group of Friends has been much in evidence with all the activities of recent weeks.

Despite a few showers, lots of people took the chance of visiting Caldecote’s wide variety of gardens at our Open Gardens weekend. Gardens are especially enjoyable when you can also chat with the gardeners. This year there was also a plant stall, and a children’s art competition; won by Saskia Monk. Well done to Saskia, to the visitors, the gardeners, people who gave plants, and the tea & cake makers for making this all such a success and for raising the excellent sum of £1,200.

One recent Sunday evening a packed church was thrilled to be entertained by Ely Cathedral Girls’ Choir. The glorious music spanned the whole life-time of our church, from 12th century to the present day, and was sung with huge joy and energy by the girls. Again we enjoyed excellent interval refreshments. Thanks to the Barker family for these and the Kamper family for looking after the choir. The concert raised a marvellous £960.

Every penny counts - Jam Jar collection

Thank you to everyone who took a jam jar when they were distributed to houses through the village earlier in the summer. We hope you feel able to throw in a few coins every so often. As you might imagine, all those coins could make a big difference, and all

the work and materials have been donated, so every penny will help towards heating the church. We will come to collect the jars at the end of the summer.

Autumn activities

‘Ride & Stride’ takes place on 10th September 2011. This is your chance to get sponsored for cycling or walking to as many churches as possible. Contact Roger (see below).

See our website for other ways you can help: www.caldecotefriends.org.uk e.g.

o Ask Amazon to donate – they’ll give whenever you buy through Amazon, so a way of fund-raising that is totally painless!

o Sponsorship made easy: our website is there to help, and it adds gift-aid.

o Birthdays! Greetings! Use our Photo Cards, or give our Cookbooks: We have lovely Greetings Cards for sale in aid of Friends’ funds: contact Lisa (see below). Or you could give a special Caldecote Cookbook: contact Roger (see below).

Our target: New church heating will cost about £20,000. With funds from this summer’s events and the last 2 years we have now raised over £12,000, so we are making progress! Thank you to everyone for all the ideas and help so far, and as always, more ideas or helping hands would be very welcome.

The Parish Council The Parish Council normally meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. On the third Thursday of the month an extra meeting is sometimes required to respond to planning applications within the 3 week consultation period. Before the start of each meeting, residents are invited to address the Council on any agenda item. If you would like something added to the agenda please notify the clerk at least 10 days before hand if possible. A full diary of the year’s meetings is available on the website. Parish Clerk contact details are : Ginni Carroll Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer to Caldecote Parish Council 43 Strympole Way Highfields Caldecote Cambridge CB23 7ZJ Telephone 01954 212993 Email [email protected] Youth Bus The visits from the Connections Youth Bus are on Wednesday evenings at the Furlong Way recreation ground from 7-15 pm until 9-15 pm. http://www.connectionsbusproject.org.uk/ Facilities include: 4 PCs with internet access, PS3, Xbox, DVDs, Karaoke, tuck-shop, variety of sports equipment, leaflet rack, quizzes and crafts At least 3 youth workers are on the bus each session and are happy to chat and point young people in the right direction when in need of help or advice. Youth Bus – summer break visits

Over the summer break (25th July to 2nd September), the Youth Bus will be visiting the village on Tuesday evenings from 7.00pm until 9.00pm at the Furlong Way recreation ground. Planning applications Residents are reminded that planning applications are available for viewing on the South Cambs DC website. Please note, the South Cambs DC planning application search has moved to http://plan.scambs.gov.uk. There is also an opportunity to make comments on line. Taylor Wimpey Talks are still taking place over the transfer of the remaining public open spaces for both phases one and two. As information is changing all the time, please look for the latest on the Parish Council minutes (on the Caldecote Parish Council web site http://www.caldecote.gov.uk). Work is continuing on the road/sewer remedials as requested/identified by CCC and Anglian Water from their site inspections on Strympole Way and Clare Drive. Once completed this will enable TWEA to progress the adoption of the roads and sewers on both phases at Caldecote. Work is starting on the various landscaping remedials on Strympole Way. Some of the work, however, will not be able to be started until the Autumn due to the nature of the works involved i.e. native bare root planting. When the contractors start the work there may be an initial visual effect on the already established landscaping (e.g. thinning out of certain areas) but this is required but this is required to remove overgrowth

Page 13: 2011 Aug-Sept Journal

and to promote the health of the shrubs. Sports Pavilion Work continues on the new sports pavilion – the piling foundations, drains and initial brickwork layers have been completed and work is currently taking place on the floor beams, to be followed by the steel and brickwork. The Parish Council would like to thank the Pavilion Committee, and especially the co-opted members, for their hard work so far on this project. A time capsule is currently being prepared to be buried alongside the pavilion – village clubs and organisations are invited to supply materials for the capsule. Please contact the Parish Clerk if you are interested. Please note that there will continue to be increased traffic past the Furlong Way play areas to and from the recreation ground as the build progresses. Traffic Calming The Parish Council has commissioned a firm of consultants to look at the current layout of Highfields Road (speed thumps and mini roundabouts). The process for changing any elements of the traffic calming system is as follows :

• Draw up design plan

• Meet with Highways for comment and safety audit

• Public consultation with the village to ensure the design has the backing of the residents

• Tendering

• Funding (either by the Parish Council or by Highways)

• Construction

• Adoption The project has been split into three elements – replacing the mini roundabouts with T-junctions, removal of the speed thumps and new traffic calming measures (e.g. past the school).Initial plans for the removal of the mini roundabouts have been reviewed by the Parish Council and comments fed back to the consultants prior to submission to Highways. Parish Council website The Parish Council website has been relaunched – please visit www.caldecote.gov.uk to see our new look ! There are links to the District and County Councillor’s websites and village organisations and there will be regular updates and village news items. Any suggestions as to further content you would find useful should be made to the Parish Clerk. Play Areas Please would you ensure that any personal play equipment used on the play areas is taken home at the end of the day and not left out overnight. Please ensure young children are supervised at all times. Recreation Ground An intensive programme of fertilising, reseeding, herbicides and maintenance is underway to improve the condition of the recreation ground after a hard winter. Weather conditions permitting, the football pitches will be reseeded and prepared for the new season and the cricket wicket and outfield are undergoing their ‘in season’ maintenance. Dog Owners PLEASE do NOT allow your dog to foul the sports areas or any play area, even if you intend to clear it up.

Page 14: 2011 Aug-Sept Journal

PITCHES SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR DOG EXCERCISING. And PLEASE clean up after your dog elsewhere. Fly tipping Please note that it is an offence to dump grass cuttings or spoil or any waste. Summer at St Michael’s ….

Flower Festival June 18/19: This was a great success and the Flower Arrangements were wonderful! Everyone chose to do an arrangement inspired by a story from the Old Testament part of the Bible. Read them again in your Bible! These were the stories: Manna from Heaven (Exodus Ch 16), Ruth, gleaning in the fields (Ruth Ch 2), Moses and the Burning Bush (Exodus Ch 3), Daniel’s friends in the Fiery Furnace (Daniel Ch 3), The Garden of Eden (Genesis Chs 1,2,3), God created, and separated the land and the sea (Genesis Ch 1), Joseph’s coat of many colours (Genesis Ch 37), and Jacob’s vision of a ladder, with angels ascending & descending (Genesis Ch 28).

Children’s Art CompetitionJune 18/19: Another event inspired by stories from the Old Testament part of the Bible – and a huge success! We had 32 entries. Our winners were: Aged 4-5: Saskia Monk; Aged 6-8: Sarah McLaren; Aged 9-11: Rebecca Watts. There was also a prize for the Churchwarden’s Choice – that was won by Amy Sylvester-Bradley. Not only are all the names of all the entrants on our website, but ALSO ALL THE PICTURES ! Wonderful!

Look them up on caldecotechurch.org.uk ***************************** HELP --- PLEASE - PLEASE – PLEASE! We need someone to help on the Sunday Music Rota to play the little Chamber Organ once a month. Which w/ends are negotiable, so if you go away things can be jiggled….The organ has only 4.5 octaves, 4 Stops and no pedals or swell. Like a piano, really! What is more, you only have 4 hymns to play per Sunday. If you wish, you can play as people come in to/ leave the church too! Contact Revd Mike Booker 01223 260095 Churchwarden’s Sabbatical ... Hello everyone, Just to let you know that I am taking a year out ..... youngsters do this all the time before Uni or whenever! It’s my turn, and an opportunity has suddenly come up for me! I am off to Spain. I have let my house out, and I will be away from Caldecote from September 1st 2011 till July 31st 2012. (Still on email, of course) Things will be fine at St Michael’s whilst I am away, you’ll see! Please don’t PANIC ((-: None of us is indispensable, after all. It will mean, however, that Mike and the PCC will need some extra support from everyone. I am sure you will all rise to the task. God bless. You will be in my prayers, of course, as I hope I will be in yours. With all best wishes and love from Annie Nason.

Caldecote Village Hall Janet Watson, who has been acting as Booking Officer for a number of years, stepped down from this role in June 2011. The committee would like to thank Janet for the hundreds of hours spent on the telephone, computer and for generally running the hall so efficiently and effectively. It really is a massive job and we all appreciate the work that Janet has put in. We are pleased to say that she is still staying on as a director. We are also extremely grateful to Jan Roberts who has kindly offered to take over this role and we wish her good luck. We are always looking for people to get involved in the running of the Hall, so if you fancy being a director why not simply turn up at a meeting to see what we are about or contact a current director for a chat. The next meeting is the AGM at 7.30pm on Monday 3rd October 2011 Don’t forget……. The village hall is a great place for village activities, fundraising events, public meetings and parties for adults and children. The hirer has use of a modern, fully equipped kitchen and under certain circumstances may be able to use the Village Hall’s alcohol license. The hall has disabled and baby changing facilities and it is situated within its own secure landscaped garden with ample parking. There is plenty of room for a marquee or bouncy castle.

If you would like any information or to book an event contact Jan Roberts on 01954 210779. Charity number:1114201 Registered in England & Wales, company number 5736926 Caldecote Village Institute Ltd. Dates and time of classes and clubs in the Hall.

Caldecote Playgroup Summer Term

We looked at the lifecycle of the caterpillar and watched closely as five caterpillars each turned into a chrysalis and then transformed into butterflies over a three week period. We released them on a sunny Monday afternoon but found to our astonishment the butterflies did not mind sitting on the children’s hands before they fluttered away. We have been fortunate having lots of parent helpers in during the term and the children experienced Bollywood dancing, learning new songs such as the penguin song, learning ball skills from a processional parent, learning about coconuts and making roti, etc. Thank you for coming in to visit! Student placement Two students came in for work experience, Dionne Deaves-Small (Swavesey Village College) and Erinna Jackson (Comberton Village Collage). Both students were very popular with the children and were kept busy reading stories, playing ball games, making play-doh cakes, chatting, etc. The students enjoyed their experience with us but found it exhausting.

Committee Playgroup numbers are high and most of our sessions are full for the year. We have a waiting list and would recommend that you place your child on the list from when they are 12 months old. Please contact Jo Lydon on 01954 210497 or by e-mail: [email protected] Fundraising Coffee morning

Playgroup is very fortunate to be on the programme for a coffee morning at the village hall. Our morning will be on Friday 23rd September. We will, of course, be very grateful for any donations of cake for the day but, most of all, we want you to come along and bring as many of your friends and family as you can, to make the event a success. Please put the date in your diary now and come and join us. Chrismas gift handicraft stall It’s a bit early to think about Christmas, but we are starting an ambitious project to run for the next 6 months. We have been given a fabulous donation of fabric samples, which are going to be turned into a variety of beautiful Christmas gifts to be sold to raise money for Playgroup. Items will range from peg bags and doorstops to quilts and a silk table runner. If you can sew and if you are interested in helping, please contact Sarah Talmage on 01954 211252 or at [email protected]. All fabric is provided and there are lots of individual projects, so you can do a little bit or a lot. If you know anyone in the village who enjoys sewing, please pass this on to them. I am also hoping to organise some sewing social events, mostly involving cake (!), where you can come along to get more information and select an item to take home and make.

Staying independent, safe and well in Cambridgeshire Information about adult social care in Cambridgeshire is now available on a new, easy-to-navigate website, developed by the County Council, called ‘Your Life, Your Choice’. The aim is to ensure that everyone in Cambridgeshire who is: looking for information about adult social care; already receiving support; or caring for a friend or family member; has access to information at a time and in a format that suits them. In addition to the website a set of Your Life, Your Choice branded leaflets, providing information about adult social care in the county, will be available from libraries. Access to the Your Life, Your Choice website is also available in libraries together with help on hand for anyone requiring assistance with sourcing information.
