Machinists at divisional shopsMeet latest challenge

The latest challenge to themachinists at divisional shops camein the form of a request to fabricate anew support trunnion for a kiln at theIron Ore Recovery Plant. Two weeksafter Owen O'Reilly, Tony Marolt,Louis Fantasia, Bianco Pegoraro,John Sloboda, Jm Angove and AllenBellefeuille started on the project, agleaming trunnion was ready fordelivery to the OAF.

Made with 22 tons of solid, mildsteel, the new piece represents asignificant departure from traditionaldesign practice. Originally, thesetrunnions or rollers, weremanufactured in England as castings,hollow metal pieces poured in amold. Not only are the castingsexpensive, but they also take anentire year to be delivered after theyhave been ordered, according toBruce Warren, machine shop co-ordinator.

Designed by Fred Henschel, adesigner at Inco's maintenanceengineering department, the newtrunniori is made of five layers ofeight inch mild steel, sandwichedtogether. Not unlike a wood

lamination, the strips of steel arebonded together. Rather than usingsome bonding agent, Bruce pointsout, the mi'd stee' pieces aremachined so they will lock into oneanother. The solid constructionrequired by the new design accountsfor the greatly increased weight. Theold castings model weighed 13 tons,about half as much as the Incotrunnion.

An important part of the trunnion'screation was the machining andinstallation of its huge shaft. It wasthe handiwork of Allen Bellefeuille.Once AUen had finished making theshaft it had to be inserted through the

roller. Bruce says this wasaccomplished by heating the roller toa temperature of 300 degrees. Thisaowed the hole in the roller toexpand by 30 thousandths of an inch,This seemingly insignificantexpansion was enough to allow themen to sp n the shaft with notrouble. Once the roller cooled andthe metal contracted, the shaft waslocked into place.

This trunnion wifl replace one offour trunnions on an IORP kiln. Kilnsare huge cylinders, 175 feet long and1 3 feet in diameter that weigh about250 tons. They serve to dry feed intoa metallic nickel form.

With the great weight the trunnionsmust bear, officials will be monitoringthe progress of the divisional shopsnew baby on a dai'y basis. NotesBruce: "This is an experiment and allthat is left is to put this devil in andsee how it stands up. The hope isthat the new roller will last longerthan the old kind, showing less of atendency of cracking and breaking up.

While design people scrutinize theprogress of the new trunnion, themachinists who fashioned it takepride in the fact that they haveaccomplished a 'first" at thecompany; a first" that may wellprove to be best.

second in anything - it gives youincentive to try harder," said JimOrosz, a 15-year veteran of the sport.Jim finished second in points in theCanadian Motorcycle Association"speedway" division.

When he's not racing motorcycles,Jim is an assistant mechanical co-ordinator in the research stations atPort Colborne and has been involvedin motorcycle racing for about 15years.

When I first started racing wecould use the same motorcycle toride on the streets and race inseveral different classificationsToday competition is so close thatevery type of racing calls for adifferent style of motorcycle," statedJim.

In his early racing career he tried avariety of things; flat truck, trials,enduro, but settled on hill climbing.He became very successful at gettingup hills in very fast times but localcourses closed and he had to travellong distances in order to compete.

"Travelling as far as 400 miles oneway to a race meet nearly everyweekend during the summer got to betoo much, so I decided to try ovaltrack racing. There are several tracksjust a short driving distance from PortColborne and that was quite anadvantage after doing so much

travelling to go hill climbing," herecalled.

His first dirt-track bike was homebuilt with a Honda engine. It wasgood enough for Jim to come secondin Canada in seasons points in the"speedway" division. He actually ledthe division for most of last seasonbut missing one night of racing late inthe season and having mechanicalproblems the very last race meet,resulted in his dropping to secondplace by one point at the end of theseason.

This year Jim is starting with a newmotorcycle especially built for thistype of racing. The total weight of themotorcycle is much less than theprevious one. The engine drives therear wheel directly without the addedweight of a transmission. The enginealso has two intake valves and twoexhaust valves that should make itsuperior to the old motorcycle. None

of the "speedway" motorcycles havebrakes.

To be competitive in just about anytype of racing is an expensiveproposition and Jim has some helpwith expenses. Bill Rafter, a one timerace car driver owns the newmotorcycle, although Jim was free tomake any changes he thought werenecessary. Lapp Cycle, a localmotorcycle dealership and PeterShuringa, an Inco employee and longtime race fan, also help out withexpenses.

"I've always liked motorcycles andI do like racing, so to me it wouldn'tmake sense to race cars or boats,"stated Jim. His wife Robin and theirthree children often go to the raceand it becomes a family outing. "Tome, racing motorcycles is exciting.I'm glad that some people get a thrillfrom watching us race," heconcluded.

inco recently donated crating material to the Azilda Lions Club for usein packaging medical supplies being sent to the island of St. Lucia. TheAzilda chapter has also sent children's clothing, books and medicalsupplies to the island including an xray machine and x-ray table whichInco donated last summer. Supplies for St. Lucia are being collected ona province wide basis by various Lions Clubs and other volunteerorganizations in an effort to assist the needy country. Bill Collls, right, on behalf of Inco Metals Company, recentlypresented a cheque for $2. 500 to John Weglo, Chairman of theSudbury branch of St. John Ambulance. The money is earmarked forgeneral use by the organization. Last year along, the Sudbury Brigadeprovided over 33,000 hours of voluntary service to the Sudbury area atvarious functions and also participated in the training of some 2, 000people in first aid.

An Update:"It's a bit like riding Secretariat,

you have to be a pretty poor jockey tolose." With those words, DavidPearson, the Laurentian Universityprofessor who was nominated projectcoordinator of the Sudbury ScienceCentre, described the feeling of beingassociated with a project that willhave the best of everything pouredinto it, to produce something that willrival other science museums acrossthe continent in originality, contentand excitement.

Blasting will begin this month atthe Science Centre's Bell Grove siteto excavate the foundations for thenetwork of unique snowflake shapedbuildings that will house manyscientific exhibits. By the time it isscheduled to open in the summer of1983 during Sudbury's Centennial,the Science Centre is expected tocost about $19 million. Earlier thisyear Donald J. Phillips, president of

lnco Limited, announced that thecompany would contribute $5 milliontoward the capital cost of the ScienceCentre.

The concept of this type ofmuseum for Sudbury is not exactly anew one, notes Professor Pearson.As long ago as the mid-i 960's localbusinessmen were talking aboutestablishing a large park which wouldtell the scientific tale of the SudburyBasin, its mineral wealth and itspeople. Since then science centreshave sprung up throughout NorthAmerica, the Ontario Science Centrein Toronto being among the mostnotable.

With the success of the OntarioScience Centre it was felt that similarcentres should be erected in otherparts of the province. Manyenvisioned a science centre assomething that could draw tourists,enrich the cultural fabric of the region

and help change the image ofSudbury. States Professor Pearson:"It was an idea that made sense andwas floating around in a number ofpeople's minds."

In 1979 the Regional Municipalityof Sudbury undertook the initiative toinvestigate a science centre projectwith the support of community andInco officials. The companyannounced, in May of the followingyear, that it would fund a $200,000study to examine the content, scopeand cost of such an establishment inSudbury.

Led by a pair of very reputablearchitects, Raymond Moriyama ofMoriyama and Teshima Architects ofToronto and John Stefura, ofTownend, Stefura, Baleshta andNicholls Architects of Sudbury, theinvestigation was presented inDecember of 1980. It was acceptedas the basis for going ahead with the

project. Shortly afterward, ProfessorPearson was hired by the SudburyRegional Development Corporation tooversee the implementation of thestudy.

Rather than produce a miniaturec'one of the Ontario Science Centrefor Sudbury, the creators of the localscience centre wish to developsomething different. Consultants havescoured science museumsthroughout North America to observehow others have presented themessage of science. They have comeup with an approach that includessome of the best from other centresas we as something new.

We wanted to give people anoverview of science,' statesProfessor Pearson, alluding to thefact that most other science centrestend to break sciences down intodisciplines such as biology, physicsor chemistry for exhibit purposes.

We also wanted to add something tothe hands-on' gadgets that are verypopular in science centres. Wewanted to add exhibits that madepeople think more, the type thatinvolved people more deeply.'

So, in addition to the gadgets thatserve to demonstrate scientf Icprinciples through participation,Professor Pearson says that theSudbury Science Centre will featurescience theatre, object theatre andlaboratories.

The science theatre developed forthe Sudbury Science Centre willconsist of a small, short productionthat might explore and give insightsinto the lives of important scientiststhrough the ages. Edison andFeraday are examples of peoplewhich this theatre may investigate.Elaborates Professor Pearson: Itwill give people some sense ofscience in the past and of scientistsin the past. It's something you don'tget in most science centres."

Professor Pearson envisions objecttheatres in the Science Centre beingdarkened rooms where spot-litdisplays give visitors some idea ofscientific concepts such as evolution.A progression of these dramatically litexhibits, he adds, would be

'something a bit more thoughtprovoking."

Sudbury Science Centre'laboratories," Professor Pearsonexplains, will be areas where peoplewill be able to spend more timeexploring some aspect of sciencethrough actual hands-onexperimentation than they would onthe gadgetry. While adults might liketo try their hand at a programming a

computer, kids might like to head fora trading post where they would findinformation on natural things theymight have collected. It would,Professor Pearson notes, serve toheighten powers of observation,collection and research, all importantscientific skills.

While the Science Centre willendeavour to show visitors thedynamics of sciences, special

attention will be paid to the uniquegeology of the Sudbury Basin as wellas the people who have settled itover the centuries. Professor Pearsonstresses that the Centre will alsoenlighten visitors to the naturalphenomena of other Northern Ontarioplaces. The introductory experience itwill give them, might inspire visitorscontinue on to these other northerntowns and cities and explore thingsfirst hand.

Professor Pearson is convincedthat the Science Centre will proveeconomically beneficial to the region.He estimates than over 1,500,000tourists by-pass Sudbury eachsummer on their way to otherdestinations. The Science Centre, heis convinced, will prove such anattraction, that many of these touristswill be pulled from the highway intothe city. The money they spend willcreate jobs. This will have a rippleeffect on the entire north as peopleare persuaded to travel to otherplaces in Northern Ontario.

A second benefit of the ScienceCentre will be that it will enrich theculture of the region. 'It will greatlyenrich the life of people up here, inthe same way theatres do, in thesame way libraries do," stressesProfessor Pearson. "I am one ofthose who believes that there is muchmore to life than shopping centresand hockey arenas."

As work begins on the ScienceCentre's Bell Grove site, fundraisingfor the $18,000,000 projectcontinues. In addition to thecorporate grants of $5,200,000 and$1 000,000 given by Inco andFalconbridge respectively, ScienceCentre officials have received a$10,000,000 comittment from theprovince and are awaiting word fromthe federal government. They willcontinue trying to sell the idea of 'themost exciting project on thecontinent" to other corporations withthe hope of securing more funding.

Other than the donations Inco hasalready made to the Science Centre,the company has helped with itsprogress in other ways, Inco people

and equipment drilled the coresamples at the construction site andhelped engineers and architectsevaluate the rock structure uponwhich the Centre will eventally sit.Throughout each stage ofconstruction Inco people will beavailable to help with advice on theerection of the complex.

Professor Pearson says the

company has played an importantrole in establishing the ScienceCentre above and beyond making thelargest donation in Canadiancorporate history. Inco wasinstrumental in making the project areality. Says Professor Pearson"Inco made reality out of an idea.There is no more important role thanthat."

Desi Deschamps is a specialty welder in the maintenance departmentat the Port Co/borne nickel refinery and has been an /nco emp/Oyee formore than 16 years. THROUGH THE PAGES OF THE TRIANGLE

The "tallest chimney in the BritishCommonwealth" caught the eye ofthe Triangle's roving reporter in Juneof 1954. Workmen were busy pouringconcrete in the structure that wouldsoon tower 615 feet above its 22 footbase. The stack was part of the newiron ore plant that would makemetallurgical history by producinghigh-grade by-product iron ore fromnickel ores mined in the SudburyDistrict.

The $16,000,000 plant, theTriangle reported, would releasesmelter capacity enabling thecompany to deliver 120,000,000pounds of defense-vital nickel to theUnited States over the next five years

without diverting regular suppliesfrom industry.

On completion the stack wouldweigh 17,000 tons and contain over500,000 pounds of reinforcing steeland nearly 100,000 pounds ofinsulating material. The stainlesssteel coping for the top of the shellwould weigh 9,000 pounds. The firmthat had built the stack at the CopperCliff smelter and the one at the PortColborne nickel refinery, theCanadian Custodis ChimneyCompany, was building the iron orefacility.Other June Events1944:

of Inco towns broke all their previouswar-financing records in the SixthVictory Loan campaign. Totalsubscriptions in the Sudbury Districtreached a new high of $1 554,400against a quota of $1 200,000.Except for $200,650 worth purchasedby people dealing directly with theirbanks, all Victory Bonds ordered byemployees or residents of lnco townswere bought outright by the companyand were delivered to theirpurchasers as soon as the paymentswere completed, the companyassuming the interest charges in theinterval. The transaction for theSudbury District necessitated writingthe biggest cheque over written up tothat Ume. The cheque totalled$1,289,100.1961:

At the first convocation of the on'ybilingual federated university inCanada, Laurentian University,honorary doctor of laws degrees wereconferred on Ontario premier LeslieFrost and Ralph D. Parker, seniorvice-president of Inco and chairmanof the University's board ofgovernors. Both men were honoredfor their part in bringing about thefederation of the University ofSudbury, Huntington College andThorneloe College.1975:

The grand old dame of Sudburyhotels, the Nickel Range, succumbedto the wrecking ball. Ageing and nolonger financially viable, its fixtureswere auctioned off and its wallswere torn down. Fire BrigadeA siren wailed in the distance while

the flames danced higher in the wind.The wailing came nearer as afiretruck transporting men andequipment appeared around thecorner. Off the truck came thebrigade, eager to set up thenecessary firefighting equipment toquench the blaze.

Some tackled the flammable liquidfire by spraying it withmonoammonium phosphate powder,an all-purpose fire extinguishingpowder; some ejected smoke fromthe building by ventilating the roofand spraying it with water, whileothers donned self-containedbreathing apparatus to rescue aperson stranded in the building.

In a matter of minutes it was allover; the flames disappeared, thesmoke subsided and crew membersdelivered the uninjured man from thebuilding. A job completed safely.

Such was the scene at the copperrefinery recently as the copperrefinery fire brigade applied its

knowledge of firefighting, apart fromits routine fire practices, in bothwritten and practical form duringthree days of special fire preventiondrills developed by the fire inspectionsection of the safety and plantprotection department.

"These upgrading exercisesrepresent our commitment to theongoing fire prevention programthroughout the Ontario division,"explained Jack Hall, Inco's chief fireinspector. "They are conducted byour assistant fire inspectors to testthe capabilities of the fire brigadesand to advise on improvements tofirefighting procedures at that specificsurface operation."

The upgrading sessions dealt withpractical hands-on firemanship whichincluded usage and handling ofhoses, the proper placement and useof ladders as well as the properoperation of pumper vehicles. Thesessions also involved the use of firepractice manuals accompanied byaudio visual presentations and

classroom discussions on such topicsas the chemistry of fire, electricalfires, the proper handling of portablefire extinguishers and the personaluse of breathing apparatus.

At the end of the practical andclassroom sessions, fire brigademembers were tested by the fireinspectors. "The inspectors look forthe proper method of safely handlingan alarm situation," Jackcommented.

All of the approximately 600volunteer firefighters and 120 brigadeofficers within the Ontario division,some of whom belong to theirmunicipal volunteer fire brigade, willhave the opporturHty to participate inthese drills, according to Jack."From the very positive response theprogram has received at the copperrefinery, we are confident that allplant and mine surface properties willwant to implement this upgradingprogram at their location in the nearfuture."

Some 48 teams simultaneouslydisplayed their expertise in first aid inthe armoury auditorium while twojudges per team carefully assessedtheir performance. Representing theOntario division of Inco MetalsCompany was the Levack mine firstaid team, recent winner of thecoveted R.D. Parker Shield. TheLevack team placed in the top five inthe senior men's division.

A second honor bestowed on theLevack mine first aid team was theMcCrea Trophy, presented to the topfirst aid team in the mining industry inOntario by the Mines AccidentPrevention Association of Ontario.

"Winning the McCrea Trophy is anhonor," stated Hank Derks, Inco'schief first aid co-ordinator. "Itindicates that you are the best in theOntario mining industry. Our guyswere confident they could win thetitle. They worked hard and did averygood job."

In May the Ontario Association for the MentaUyRetarded announced that nco Metals Company was the1981 recipient of the Employer of the Year" award. Thepurpose of the award is to recognize and encourageleadership on the part of businesses and otherorganizations in creating employment opportunities forthe employable disabled.

Gail Assmann, supervisor of office services, acceptedthe "Employer of the Year" award on behalf of thecompany at ceremonies in Windsor and at the VocationalAssessment and Training Centre in Sudbury.

Opened in October of 1978, the VATC, through aprogram developed for vocational assessment, worktraining and built-in vocational support systems, assistsemployably disabled adults in developing or enhancingwork skills necessary to allow independence, bothvocationally and socially in a community setting.

Linda Duguay, VATC job placement manager, said,"One of the main things that they (the OntarioAssociation for the Mentally Retarded) looked at was thatInco came to us looking for an employee. We didn't goknocking hard on their door for the first person theyhired.

They came to us and said we're interested in aworker and we would like to look at the workers that youhave."

On the morning of April 12, 1981the NASA space shuttle Columbia,heaved itself slowly from the ground,enveloped in a fiery halo, as it madea bid to release itself from the earthsgravity. It marked the beginning of a54 hour trip that took the ship out ofthe earths atmosphere and on to thevery first manned landing of a spaceship.

The majestic looking craft,reminiscent of an airforce jet with itsbroad, stubby wings and rotund

midsection, probably seems as faraway and foreign to a mining, milling,or smelting and refining employee asa llama in South America, but it'snot.

Each and every employee at IncoMetals Company can be proud of thefact that some of the nickel mined.milled, and smelted in Sudbury is partof the space craft, Columbia.

temperature and corrosionresistance. These properties havemade nickel an important part of thesteel industry and the two metalstogether can be found in a wide areaof usage such as in jet engines,operating room utensils, and even carbumpers.

But this time the nickel industryand all the people involved in it haveoutdone themselves and helped makea dream come true. Original spacemissions were so costly that they

were few and far between. The craftswere only good for a single trip andthe expenses mounted.

Now, space shuttles like theColumbia can be re-used up to 100times, bringing the costs for a flightdown drastically and enablingscientists to consider research thatwas not previously possible. They arenow making plans for a spacetelescope which will allowastronomers to see seven timesfurther than they can now. There arealso plans for a free floating platformin space to be used for variousscientific studies.

The Shuttle's Remote ManipulatorSystem (SRMS), a mechanical armwhich will be used to move payloadsin and out of the cargo bay in space.It was not only designed and built inCanada by Spar Aerospace Limited,but also used several types of nickelalloys. The nickel for many of thesealloys was produced by Inco MetalsCompany. The alloys were used inseveral areas of the mechanical armincluding the joints, which allows thearm to move various ways. Theywere also used in the gear trainassemblies.

Spar Aerospace chose nickel alloysbecause of their good resistance tostress and corrosion and theirfracture toughness, fatigue strength,and weldability. The SRMS is sosophisticated in nature that it hasnearly the same flexibility andprecision as a human arm.

Huntington Alloys, a division ofInco Limited, based in Virginia, had ahand in building the rocket engines.Some 75 percent of the material ineach of the three orbiter engines(each costing $500 million) was madefrom Inco invented alloys. Thisincluded some 1,200 pounds ofINCOLOY alloy 903 and smalleramounts of both MON EL alloy k-SOCand INCONEL alloy 625, which wasproduced by Huntington Alloys.

The primary material in theengines, each weighing 2,500pounds, was INCONEL alloy 718.Hungtington Alloys developed thisparticular metal also, but it wasproduced by other companies sinceHuntington could not make forgingstock large enough for what theengines needed. Amazingly, theengines had to withstand temperaturechanges from 423 degrees

Fahrenheit to 6,000 degreesFahrenheit, so they had to be tough,strong and durable. The engines willbe used for as many as 55 flights.

Nickel alloys were also used forthe bolts that held the booster rocketsto the Columbia. These bolts weremanufactured to explode after theshuttle had reached a certain altitudeso that the boosters were releasedand could drop into the ocean forretrieval.

The Columbia, soon to be joined bythree other shuttles called theChallenger, Discovery and Atlantis,has been touted by many as thevehicle to the second space age.

In an interview with TimeMagazine, John Young, the fifty year-old commander of the Columbia said,

I think we have a remarkablecapability here. We're really not toofar - the human race isn't far fromgoing to the stars."

Nickel, with its useful properties,and Inco, the company and peoplethat remove it from the ground andchange it to various wonder-workingalloys, will literally be with the shuttlesand astronauts - every step of theway.

$5 million savedLast year onEnergy costs inOntario division

Four times a year representativesfrom various operating areas withinthe Ontario division meet to discussone subject which is of concern notonly to industry .but to the individual-energy conservation.

The representatives are membersof the Internal Energy ManagementCommittee which was establishedin 1975 to deal with energymanagement policies and projects inthe Ontario division.

Chaired by the utilities department,the committee consists of some 20representatives who report theirarea's energy performance at theinternal energy management meeting.There, the reps assess their area'sperformance in reducing energy costsand discuss potential energy-savingprojects applicable to their area ofoperation.

Leno Crema, senior mechanicalmaintenance engineer with centralmaintenance, has now joined theenergy management team as aspecial advisor to the committee. Inhis new function, Leno will bereviewing the energy managementprogram and recommending changeswhere feasible to increase itseffectiveness in reducing energycosts and consumption.

"The meetings are held on aregular basis to exchange energy-saving ideas," explained Claude Kerr,Inco's energy managment co-ordinator. 'It's an opportunity tobring the representatives up to dateon rising energy costs, and loexamine other units of the Inco familyas well as other companies to seehow they are meeting their energyneeds."

Discussions at the meeting alsofocus on energy-saving projects suchas the energy test vehicles convertedto run on propane gas, theconversion to a methanol/diesel fuelmixture in undergound vehicles and arevision in the ventilation system atStobie mill.

As well, the committee is revisingthe energy reporting system whichinvolves the recording of energyconsumed and the status of energysaving projects at each plant. It willinclude a report indicating the Ontariodivision's energy performance for thequarter as compared to that of theprevious year. It is expected that thisrevised reporting system will beimplemented by the beginning of1982.

committee priority. The committeewill also be dealing with presentationson energy conservation and reviewingthe monthly suggestion plan as itpertains to energy savings.

As a result of the work by plantenergy committees, the Ontariodivision has reduced its energy costsby $5 million in 1980, according toClaude. This energy reduction isequivalent to a saving of 250,000barrels of oil.

The Ontario division is a memberof a voluntary mining andmetallurgical energy conservationtask force which was formed in 1974at the request of the federalgovernment. This task forceestablished an energy reduction goalof 5.8 per cent per unit of productionby 1980 and 15 per cent by 1985.The Ontario division exceeded the1980 goal having reduced its energyconsumption by 12.5 per cent. Weare confident that the division willalso exceed the 1985 goal," Claudeadded.

In conjunction with the safety and plant protection department,a representative of the Sudbury Regional Police Force recentlypresented films on child abuse and child molestation. The filmswere presented to process technology employees as part of thesafety and plant protection department's off-the-job safetyprogram. "We are not here to alarm people," explainedOfficer Mike McKlnny from the Youth Bureau, MoralityDivision of the Sudbury Regional Police, "We are here toeducate people, to make them aware of suspicious personswhich will make our job easier. We live in a good communityand we want it to stay that way." A love for horses has sent Robert Donaldson, son of MargDonaldson who is a keypunch operator in computer services,to places far from home. This year, Rob will be visiting a verydifferent land some 8000 miles from home - Saudi Arabia. Robhas accepted an offer from the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia towork for a minimum of one year as instructor/manager at theEquestrian Club ot the Royal Family in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.Rob has been horseriding and competing for 14 years, seven ofwhich were spent riding and training professionally. He workedfor the Canadian Olympic equestrian team as well as theCanadian show jumping team a few years ago. He has alsotaught riding at several riding clubs in Ontario and the US. Rob'ill have the privilege of instructing members and relatives of

the Royal Family. Other duties will include maintaining stablesand possibly going on buying trips for horses to Europe andAmerica. I also plan to help establish a Saudi national jumpingteam for the Olympics, Rob added.

The Joint Annual Conference of the Ontario Section of the AirPollution Control Association and the Pollution ControlAssociation of Ontario was held for the first time in Sudburylast month. The threeday conference, which attractedapproximately 180 members from across the province, washeld to discuss air and water pollution problems and theirabatement. The Second Annual Sudbury Stamp Show was held at CivicSquare recently. Stamp dealers from throughout the provincedisplayed theft collections to the public. In addition to seUingand trading stamps, the dealers gladly offered tips on stamps tonovice collectors. One of the dealers at the show was JohnFrith, a roaster helper at the Iron Ore Recovery Plant andproprietor of Sudbury Stamps. He has been collecting stampsfor over 30 years and says he can't begin to count the numberof stamps he has gathered. Lately John has been specializingin military postal history and boasts a fine collection of militarycanceUations. Here John shows off some of the stamps he hadfor sale at the exhibit.

Major Winners$1,605 The suggestion plans leading award, this month went to Mike Yallowega of Levack mine for

recommending that heavy wall pipe be installed at the out end of the elbows and valves of thesandfill pipe. The light wall pipe in use previously, would wear out, causing the pipe to leakafter pouring 1 000 tons of sand. Now considerable savings are toeing realized in materialcosts as the pipes last six times longer.

$415 Nikolaus Hawrysczyszyn of the Clarabelle mill thought that the sampler stainless steelcutter blades should be lined with sharp-edged ceramic strips. As a result, wear on the edgeof the cutter has been reduced dramatically. Also they are safer to install than the razor sharpstainless steel cutter blades.

$400 Port Colborne's top award went to John Boggio for suggesting that the company becredited for unused propane left in containers, particularly 40 pound cylinders. Significantamounts of the gas were being left in the containers representing a big cost to the company.

$265 Benson Mullen of the Clarabelle mill noticed that the existing supports for the hot watersystem circulating pumps, placed unnecessary stress on pump seals, motor bearings andcouplings causing breakdowns. His award winning suggestion was to install a threaded rod inthe top section of the pipe with nuts so that all units can be adjusted to proper levels toeliminate stress. Not only has this adjustable system meant fewer breakdowns but it alsoallows for an easier means of removing units when maintenance is required.

$255 When he found that feed would build up on the side of MK filters, William Morton of matteprocessing submitted plans for some alterations to the interiors of the filters that solved theproblem. Now the feed falls off the wall, saving material and labor costs.

$195 Three Levack mine men, Wilfred Lagace, Robert Wood and Marcel Lafontaine shared inthis suggestion plan award. They saw that when the fibre gear in the torque converter broke,it often caused the impeller cover on the torque, or the hub on the flywheel which insert ineach other, to wear down. The hub, they proposed, should be made of a harder material andhave a wider bore diameter to fit on the stem and fit onto the hub. This eliminated a need tochange and install a new hub and impeller cover cap each time the fibre gear breaks. Timeand money has been saved and the job made a lot easier to perform.

$150 Kalevi Hellsten of transportation came up with the idea of using sheets of aspenite to coverwindows during the winter rather than plywood. Aspenite, it was found, was much lessexpensive than plywood and nearly as strong.

$150 A lack of information and training on electrical systems at Copper Cliff South mine inspiredDennis Bean to suggest that the data package system be implemented. It is designed to givecomplete files on any given system. The system can be used for training, research, jobplanning and general reference.

$135 When the sleeves of GIW pump barrels had to be removed they were burned off and thenreplaced. Roger Zazulak and Raymond Lachance of the Clarabelle mill submitted aproposal to pack the sleeves with ordinary grease. Money and labor has been saved as thesleeves come off easier and can be reused.

$130 Robert Norton of Frood mine developed a means of holding back pressure on in-theholerods that allows the rod weight to be controlled well over 3,200 pounds. Now men can drillsmoother and slower helping the bit to cut better and last longer.

$120 Modification of the existing Nelson stud welder used to repair insulaUon, earned WilliamCook of the Iron Ore Recovery Plant a nomination to the suggestion plan awards list. Costsavings were realized because it is now doing work that rental equipment used to perform.

$120 Rather than continue to allow cooling water from number one pumphouse, Laurier Dupuis ofmatte processing proposed a way of recycling it back to the pumphouse. The idea reducedthe 'make-up' of Vermillion water, saving millions of gallons a year. It also diminishes theamount of chemicals used in the cooling tower.

$100 Ugo D'Onofrio of Port Colborne found that drumbrake linings on the number nine crane didnot last as long as they should have because the brake shoes were not properly centred. Heoffered a solution for the problem by recommending that an adjustable sprinq be used tocentre the brake shoe. Now the life of linings has been extended.
