UNDERSTANDINGS:

• THE STUDENT WILL UNDERSTAND LITERARY ELEMENTS IN THE SELECTED READINGS BY LAURA NUMEROFF. • THE STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND HOW TO SUMMARIZE AND MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN VARIOUS STORIES WRITTEN BY LAURA NUMEROFF.

1. EXPLAIN TO STUDENTS THAT THEY ARE GOING TO BE FOCUSING ON STORY ELEMENT SUCH AS CHARACTERS, SETTING, AND PLOT. 2. ASK STUDENTS TO HELP DEFINE WHAT EACH OF THE ELEMENTS ARE. 3. MATCHING GAME: STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO USE THE DOCUMENT CAMERA TO PUT ITEMS IN THE CORRECT CATEGORY. THE CATEGORIES ARE CHARACTERS, PLOT, AND SETTING. 4. EXPLAIN TO STUDENTS THAT THIS WEEK THEY ARE GOING TO FOCUS ON THE AUTHOR LAURA NUMEROFF. TODAY THEY WILL HEAR A STORY BY LAURA NUMEROFF CALLED IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE. EACH OF THE STORY ELEMENTS ARE IN THIS STORY. THERE ARE CHARACTERS, SETTING, AND PLOT. AFTER READING THE STORY THEY WILL NEED TO IDENTIFY EACH ONE. 5. READ IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE ALOUD TO STUDENTS. WHILE READING STOP TO ASK QUESTIONS AND HAVE THE STUDENTS MAKE PREDICTIONS. 6. AFTER READING, HAVE STUDENTS IDENTIFY THE CHARACTERS, SETTING, AND PLOT OF THE STORY. 7. PERFORMANCE TASK: IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE ACTIVITY FOLDER. 8. DISTRIBUTE FILE FOLDERS TO EACH STUDENT. ON THE COVER STUDENTS WILL FILL IN THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR’S NAME. (APPENDIX A: COVER SHEET) 8. DISTRIBUTE FOLDABLE PAPERS FOR CHARACTERS, SETTING, AND PLOT AND HAVE STUDENTS COMPLETE. 9. DISTRIBUTE CUT AND PASTE SEQUENCING PAPER (APPENDIX B). STUDENTS WILL CUT AND PASTE THE EVENTS OF THE STORY IN THE CORRECT ORDER ONTO THE FILE FOLDER. 10. WEEK 3

1. READ IF YOU GIVE A MOOSE A MUFFIN TO STUDENTS. ASK STUDENTS TO IDENTIFY SIMILARITITE S AND DIFFERENCES TO THE OTHER STORIES THEY HAVE READ BY LAURA NUMEROFF. 2. PLAY THE MOOSE VOKI TO THE CLASS. 2. DISTRIBUTE PAPER AND PENCILS TO EACH STUDENT. THE STUDENTS WILL GO TO THE COMPUTER CENTER WHERE LAURA NUMEROFF’S WEBSITE IS UP. 3. STUDENTS WILL RESEARCH TO FIND THREE INTERESTING FACTS AND RECORD THEM ON THEIR PAPER. THE STUDENTS MUST ALSO CREATE ONE QUESTION TO ASK LAURA NUMEROFF.(APPENDIX E) 4. PERFORMANCE TASK: THE STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE THE LAURA NUMEROFF GRAPHIC ORGANIZER (APPENDIX F) BY FILLING IN THEIR THREE FACTS.
