Thank you for purchasing this resource!

This resource is intended to help you keep track of your students’ progress toward

proficiency in all reading skills and strategies that align with common core and other

common assessments, such as the NWEA. You’ll find the common core standards

addressed, along with additional skills, such as fact and opinion, covered too. While I

understood that we were teaching the CCSS, I still felt my students were lacking when it came to those other important skills that the CCSS didn’t cover.

These quick checks are intended just for that purpose. These mini-assessments are to

just quickly guide you to see how your students are progressing and can be done at

any time. They provide valuable information to help you determine guided reading groups, response to intervention groups, documentation for child study meetings, and

much more.

I have placed three to a sheet for quick and easy copying with a title that can be cut

off the top. This title is for your reference as to what skill you are testing. I have also provided the option of having three different skills to a sheet. These have titles, but

they are not as detailed (such as text features- caption) so that students are not aware

as to what is being tested.

Finally, I have provided a spreadsheet with the various quick checks listed for you and numbers for your students. You can place a red mark for not mastered, a yellow for

approaching, and a green for mastered. Another option would be to simply check off

the box when the student has mastered the content.

If you see anything that needs to be corrected, or a skill you would like added, please do not hesitate to contact me. After creating several paragraphs and staring at these

pages for days, my brain can fill in blanks and all can look right. I did have an editor,

but you never know. (Plus, if you know me, grammar and mechanics is not my best. J)

gardens had different flowers. The tall old couple had a dahlia garden. The dahlias were very

colorful flowers but they did not have a scent. They were brightly colored flowers in red,

orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The old man took care of these flowers because

he had very good eyesight and loved the way they looked. Meanwhile, the short old couple had a rose garden. They only grew white roses but they smelled so sweet and beautiful. The

old woman had a very good sense of smell so that's why she grew these flowers. Sometimes,

the tall old man gave some colorful dahlias to the short old woman. In return, the short old

woman shared her sweet white roses with the tall old man.

She ate inside her hair. She slept inside her hair. When she walked, it was as if her hair carried her around. The islanders thought all sorts of things about her. They thought she was

a daughter of a woolly mammoth. Others thought it was not only the hair on her head but

also the hairs of her body. Another group of people thought she was cursed by a witch or a

warlock or a wizard. One day the bushy big hair girl got tired of the whispers around her. She

shouted and all the islanders looked in her direction, “I am not a woolly mammoth’s daughter. I am not cursed by any witch or warlock or wizard. It’s just all the hairs on my head grew long

problem was, Stu never stayed in one place. Stu didn’t like being slippery. It was a horrible thing for a snake to be slippery. When he slept in his den, he woke up outside of it. When he

caught his prey, it always got away. So one day, Stu went to the forest to get rid of his

slippery body. He tried rolling over dried leaves. For a moment, Stu was not slippery anymore.

He was happy and he quickly went to his den to sleep. The next day, Stu woke up and he was

how. One thought they left them in the coop. One thought they left them in their shells. The last chick thought it was taken by the foxes. They needed to get their beaks because their

mother would not give them corn without them. So, the three little chicks searched for their

beaks in the coop and in their shells but didn't find them. Searching the fox's den was out of

the question. They didn't want to be breakfast that morning. Suddenly, mother hen called the

chicks and took out three boxes. The three little chicks tried to cry and tell mother about their lost beaks. Not having a beak made it difficult to talk. Mother hen calmed the chicks and told

and bushy. If you don’t believe me, wait until you see me.” The islanders were all shocked and

excited to find out who was right once the girl came out of her big bushy hair.

“Run, Forrest, Run!” Have you heard of this phrase before? It’s the most famous line of an all-time favorite 1994 comedy drama movie, “Forrest Gump.” Forrest sits on a bench waiting for a bus to go to

Jenny, the love of his life. As he was waiting for the bus, he retells his life story to any stranger who sits

beside him. As he narrates his story, it showed that he was part of every important event in American history. He gave Elvis Presley his signature dance move. He was Alabama’s football star. He even

served in the Vietnam War where he met Bubba and Lieutenant Dan who made him Bubba-Gump’s

founder. Also, he was a ping pong superstar, he helped John Lennon compose a song, and he ran across America. While running, he helped two men build their bumper sticker and t-shirt businesses.

He also met the US president twice! All these were very important in our history, but for Forrest, it was

all about Jenny. He finally ended his story and the old lady told him that Jenny lived just a few blocks from the bus station. So once again, Forrest ran to his Jenny. Forrest finally took Jenny and their son,

young Forrest, back to Alabama. They got married even though she was sick and Jenny died soon

afterwards of her sickness. Forrest and young Forrest lived together. Forrest was kind and brave and did anything for his girl, Jenny.

Before, I hated using my mom and dad’s present because I always fell down. I hated wearing all sorts of things just to be protected. But now, it’s my favorite thing in the world! At first, I started with four wheels. Now, I can

do without the other two. With two feet at the pedals, it takes me anywhere I want to go. It can go slow or it can go really fast. I have a hard time pedaling up a hill. Once I get to the top, I speed right down. It’s the most

thrilling experience in the world because it goes faster the closer I get to the bottom! Next, I will try to do cool tricks. Could you ride with me next time?

What conclusion can you draw from the story? The present was a bicycle. I know that because people use training wheels at first which gives them four wheels. Then when they

know how to use their bike, they have two wheels. Bikes have pedals for your feet and it’s fun

“To see is to believe”, that’s what I always say. I cannot agree or believe in something you say, if you don’t show me. I need proof. I need evidence. It’s more important to see something before you say it’s true.

Experiencing is believing. If you cannot see it, then it’s absolutely false, made up or a lie. Would you believe that there is wind if you didn’t feel it? Would you believe ice cream is delicious if you couldn’t taste it? Would

slippery anymore. He was happy and he quickly went to his den to sleep. The next day, Stu woke up and he was still in his den! He was really happy with his new skin. It wasn’t sticky and slippery anymore. He continued

rolling in the leaves day after day. After a while, he didn’t need to roll in leaves because his skin grew it’s own leaf like skin. Stu would tell you, if he could speak, that that’s how snakes got their scales.

problem. Stu comes up with a solution that worked and continued using this solution until it

A dictionary is a list of words in ABC order. It shows how to spell and pronounce a word. It tells

a word’s meaning, origin and parts of speech. You can get a list of related words (synonym and antonym). There are sometimes idioms listed and sample sentences of a word. There are

also dictionaries with the translation of words in different languages from around the world.

What is the main idea of the story? The main idea is that the dictionary is a list of words in

ABC order with descriptions of the word.

Can you give three supporting details about it? 1) It shows how to spell and pronounce a

word. 2) It tells a word’s meaning, origin and parts of speech. 3) Related words are listed too.

4) Idioms and sample sentences are listed. 5) There are translation dictionaries in different

languages.

Nain Idea & Supporting Details

The water cycle begins when water on the Earth's surface is warmed by the sun. This causes

water to change into a gas. This process is called evaporation. After the water evaporates, it begins to accumulate in the sky into clouds. The clouds gather together and begin to cool.

This stage is known as condensation. Afterwards, the water falls to the ground in the form of

rain, snow or hail. This is called precipitation. Lastly, the water collects on the ground and

flows into bodies of water like ponds, lakes, rivers and the ocean. The cycle starts all over

again.

What happened first, second, and last? First water heats up and evaporates. Second, the

water comes together into clouds and cool. Third the water falls to the ground. Fourth, water

accumulates into bodies of water.

Cause and Effect

Take the time and make the efforts to be healthy. If you eat fruits and vegetables, you are on

your way to being healthy because you will have vitamins your body needs. Add in doing exercise, then you will have better working organs and muscles. When a person is healthy, they

do not get sick as often. As a result, you will not miss sports games or playtime with your

friends.

Josey and Johnny are twins. They where born only 10 minutes apart, but they have many

different characteristics. They both like apple pie, but Josey likes it with peanut butter and Johnny likes with jam. Josey likes to read novels and Johnny likes to read comics, but both of

them likes reading under the big oak tree.

How are the twins alike? They both like apple pie and reading. They have the same parents

and are born on the same day.

How are the twins different? Josey likes to eat apple pie with peanut butter and likes to read

novels. Johnny likes to eat apple pie with jam and likes to read comics.

Comparing and Contrasting Within a Nonfiction Text

There were an estimated 3,500 people aboard the Titanic. The crew would call these passengers “souls.” There were 2,435 passengers and about 900 crew members. Each person had their place. Just like planes, there

were three classes in the ship. The rich and famous lavished in first class. The professionals stayed in second class. The non-professionals, laymen, stayed in third class. Then the crew were divided into three categories:

top officials, people taking care of passengers, and ship workers.

People had questions. How does a ship that big sink? Both the American and British maritime courts interviewed passengers and crew that survived. They wanted to find out what really happened. The main focus

of all the stories was the iceberg that hit the Titanic. The night of April 14, 1912, the ship received many radio messages saying that the course she took was full of ice fields, pack ice, growlers and icebergs. Icebergs are

huge blocks of solid ice—only a small part of it can be seen above water. With icebergs, danger lurks below.

How are the texts alike? Both text are about the Titanic and about people.

How are the texts different? The first text is about the different classes of people on the ship. The second text was about questions about how the Titanic sunk when the ship was warned

about the icebergs.

unlike the animals in the zoos in cities. The people are friendlier, too! I made so many friends

and played many fun games outdoors. In the city, people are too busy and kids play with their

gadgets instead of with humans. The countryside is truly better than the city for a kid like me.

How did the facts support the author’s claim about the topic? The facts all were benefits of

living in the countryside. The air is better quality, the countryside has animals running freely

and people are friendlier. All of these are positive aspects of countryside living.

My kids don’t like to eat vegetables. This made me worry that they are not going to be healthy.

I had to find ways to make them eat veggies without causing them to cry and fight. One of kids’ favorite foods are pizza, so I made a veggie pizza. I used very colorful veggies like carrots,

tomatoes, yellow bell pepper and some broccoli. It was a hit! For dessert, I made a fruity pizza.

They were not expecting that. I made it with cherries, pineapples, grapes, and blueberries.

They finished it all! Now, I don’t have to worry about making my kids eat fruits and vegetables.

How is the text structured (organized)? It is problem and solution. The problem was the kids

didn’t eat their veggies. The solution was to make a veggie pizza.

Summarizing Nonfiction Text

My mother is the most beautiful woman to me. Her face is the shape of a heart. Her eyes are as

blue as the ocean and as bright as the sun. She has plum cheeks and a cute button nose. Her lips are as red as the roses with the sweetest smile. My mother is no movie star, but she’s the

most beautiful woman.

How is the text structured (organized)? It has a main idea and sentences that describe. The

text structure is description.

“Run, Forrest, Run!” Have you heard of this phrase before? It’s the most famous line of an all-time favorite 1994 comedy drama movie, “Forrest Gump.” Forrest sits on a bench waiting for a bus to go to Jenny, the love of his

life. As he was waiting for the bus, he retells his life story to any stranger who sits beside him. As he narrates his story, it showed that he was part of every important event in the American history. He gave Elvis Presley his

signature dance move. He was Alabama’s football star. He even served in the Vietnam War where he met Bubba and Lieutenant Dan who made him Bubba-Gump’s founder. Also, he was a ping pong superstar, he helped John

Lennon compose a song, and he ran across America. While running, he helped two men build their bumper sticker and t-shirt businesses. He also met the US president twice! All these were very important in our history,

but for Forrest, it was all about Jenny. He finally ended his story and the old lady told him that Jenny lived just a few blocks from the bus station. So once again, Forrest ran to his Jenny. Forrest finally took Jenny and their son,

young Forrest, back to Alabama. They got married even though she was sick and Jenny died soon afterwards of her sickness. Forrest and young Forrest lived together. Forrest was kind and brave and did anything for his girl,

Jenny.

What is the summary of the text? The movie “Forest Gump” is about a man named Forest who told his

story about him chasing after Jenny. In the process, he got to be part of every major event in history. He finally married Jenny and raised their son after Jenny died.

creative genius in every artist. It is like the Gardens of Ornussa. Each plant in that garden is carefully

sculpted by the Greek genius Ornussa Halimora who is the most famous plant sculptor. Lessons are held in a building designed by the most famous creative engineer, Pierre Le’Pou from Italy. The most

renowned artists from each country have paintings here to decorate the rooms. Most of all, Pres

College of Arts caters not only to the visual and written arts. It also caters for the moving arts of dancing, singing, and acting. All performances take place in the Great Hall. Pres College of Arts is an art

institution with facilities and inspiring mentors to bring out the creative genius in you.

What are the important details of the story? Why are these most important? Pres College of Arts is for

the best artists designed by the best artists. Most of all, Pres College of Arts caters not only for the

visual and written arts but also for the moving arts. These are most important because it describes the college. All the other details support these two details.

Entomophagy began very long ago when humans first started living on Earth and continues

today. Almost 80 percent of the whole world’s population eat insects. In fact, a total of 3,000 people groups from North America, South America, Africa, Asia and the Pacific have been

practicing cooked bug-eating. Some of those communities even eat raw bugs too! It’s part of

their daily lives!

What does entomophagy mean? How do you know? It is the practice of eating insects. I know this because the rest of the paragraph is about eating bugs in different parts of the world.
