At SKIMS even though Akhoon and Sadiq inquired about health of many “terminally ailing patients”, witnesses said the duo remained conspicu- ous for skipping to meet the dying 23-year-old patient from Rafiabad Baramulla whose transplanted kidney has failed because of dog bite while govern- ment has allegedly failed to provide him any relief in the costly life-saving treatment. Meanwhile SHO Parimpora Police Station Muhammad Ayoub Rather claimed to have arrested seven gamblers from Laway Pora adding that stake money of Rs 5,200 and one packet of playing cards were recovered from pos- session of the accused. Area has no transport facility, no dispensary; locals aghast ABID BASHIR Srinagar, Jan 3: Just 12 kms from the City’s commer- cial hub, Lal Chowk, Zaffran Colony, Sempora Srinagar continues to crave for public transport and basic health facilities despite hectic efforts by the locals since 2005. Due to continued urbaniza- tion, people from many areas of old City and elsewhere pur- chased land and constructed houses on the land known for producing saffron crop. At present more than 500 fami- lies reside in the colony, says Abdul Gaffar Rather, the head of United Welfare Committee (UWC), Zaffran Colony, Sri- nagar. Locals formed the com- mittee, a few years ago, to build pressure on the government to fulfill their demands. “There are dozens of issues and some of them are of serious nature,” Rather said. “Trans- port is a major issue. Imagine, we are living in 21st century and we have no transport facil- ity. This area is just 12 kms from Lal Chowk. But it seems that we are living in a dark age as government has never addressed the basic problems of this Colony.” Ghulam Nabi Shaheen, Vice-President UWC, said they have been moving from pillar to post since 2005. “We have not spared any official. From Regional Transport Officer (RTO) to Deputy Commission- er to Divisional Commissioner to even Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, we have met all, but to no avail. It seems that gov- ernment is not bothered about us.” He said that over the past eight years, they have only got assurances. “Every offi- cial assured us that transport problem would be resolved, but nothing happened,” Shaheen said. “Our children, sick, elder- ly, and even women folk have to walk right up to Sempora stop to board bus for Lal Chowk.” Imam of Jamia Masjid Ahn- ambal, Zaffran Colony, Ghulam Nabi Khan said the area that comprises of more than four lakh people doesn’t have basic health facility let alone transport facil- ity. “We have identified the land for the dispensary, but govern- ment is in a deep slumber. Who will listen to us? For small health related problems, women and children have to walk four kms to reach Sub-district hospital Pampore, which is an irony,” he said. “Government should wake up from the slumber and resolve transport and dispensary issues on priority… Now that elections are closer, leaders from all parties will come and seek votes. But the reality is no leaders have done anything for us so far.” Interestingly, Zaffran Colony falls in Sonwar Assem- bly constituency, which is presently being represented by National Conference legislator Muhammad Yaseen Shah, who according to locals has never visited the area over the past five years. Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Farooq Ahmed Shah said he will take up the issue of transport problem with the RTO Kashmir. “There should be a bus service from Lal Chowk to Zaf- fran Colony, Sempora. We will look into the issue,” he said. RTO Kashmir Anees Ahmed admit- ted that Zafran Colony is facing transport problem. “We will sort out this issue. We will try our best to find out some way out,” he said. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Health, Shabir Ahmed Khan said he will person- ally visit the area soon to take stock of the problems related to health faced by the people of Zaffran Colony, Srinagar. “I will visit the area during my Winter Secretariat period and meet people there. We will look into the demand of setting up of a dispensary there seriously,” he said. Transport is a major issue. Imagine, we are living in 21st century and we have no transport facility. As it was practically impossible to lift snow from vast cemented ter- race falling on eastern side of the shrine, the robot multi-function was virtually lifted on the wood logs and raised to the levels of terrace which finally removed snow from main cemented area of Hazratbal shrine,” it added.
