So lets not beat around the bush. What we're saying is think of React as your wingman. You. Are. Welcome.
React will be available once a month, every month. �is means with all listed events, you
will have enough time to pen it in the diary and gather a crowd, but not too much time that you will drag your fancy-free feet.
With this said, because it's our �rst issue and we want the best for you (like some overbearing parent), we have taken the liberty of going one step further and have featured some of the top events coming to our glorious county between April and December.
Each month, we also pledge to share with you our top spots in Kent, from the best in cocktail chic to the �nest art cafés and live music venues, as well as more reviews and event listings than we realised were possible. Maybe now you will see why we heart Kent.

LONDON COMES TO MAIDSTONE
London: Night & Day is an exhibition of recent works by emerging Maidstone-based photographer Matt White. �e show will open with a charity preview in aid of local deaf charity, Hi Kent, on 1st May at Stepping Stones Studios, Maidstone and will run until the end of the month. London: Night & Day is a blend of architectural landscapes, nightscapes and street photography that uses sunrise, sunset and the re�ective properties of the �ames. Matt said, “Hopefully these shots give a feel of central London, its beauty and colour at all times of the day. Music On �e Hill is back this July with a stunning weekend of outdoor music and entertainment at Kings Hill, Kent. MAIDSTONE FRINGE FESTIVAL 2013
For all you fringe lovers, whip open your diaries and pencil in some dates for one of Kent’s most looked-forward-to events – the Maidstone Fringe Festival.
Once again, the festivities will be taking over multiple Maidstone venues – some new for 2013 – in order to bring you �ve days of live music from 2nd
to 6th May. Over 100 bands and artists will perform in a bid to promote and showcase unyielding new talent, with a prominent focus on celebrating localised
performers from Kent and the South East. Alternative rock, indie, blues, acoustic, reggae and folk will account for the main musical in�uences, whilst an additional sideline of hilarious stand-up comedy and live street performers
will be there for your entertainment. Right on your doorstep and with most events free admission, there really are no excuses not to go!

THREE BROTHERS FROM KENT MAKING WAVES IN THE INDIE-POP WORLD
Kent-based band �e Hotelles recently marked their third release with an A/B side single release of “Movie Reel” and “She Hasn’t Slept For Weeks”. Brothers Tom (21, vocals/guitar), Ben (18, bass/vocals) and Sam (14, drums) produce a distinctly fresh and ‘British’ guitar sound, and have already attracted the attention of fashion company Vans, with their music being featured in a promo video for

CONTEMPORARY ART IN FOLKESTONE GETS A NEW NAME
“Folkestone Artworks” has been announced as the new name for the collection of works originally commissioned by �e Creative Foundation
for the Folkestone Triennial that are now on permanent display in public spaces in the town. �e o�cial launch of the collection will
take place during the bank holiday weekend (3rd to 6th May), which will include the unveiling of a new website, location map and guide;
a programme of talks and tours; audio guide; �lm screenings at Quarterhouse; family activities and other imaginative events. Folkestone Artworks includes work by artists as celebrated as Turner Prize nominee Tracey Emin; 2007 Turner Prize winner Mark Wallinger; and Cornelia

�e sun will have its hat on and will hopefully be coming out to play at this year’s Hop Farm Festival. Situated in the Hop Farm in Paddock Wood, near Tonbridge, this boutique festival has been running since 2008, priding itself on a no sponsorship, no branding and no VIP policy. �ink you can handle that and slum it, the 2012 line up featured legend Bob Dylan, as well as Damien Rice, Primal Scream, Maximo Park and many more. 2013 is yet to be con�rmed but we’re excited.www.hopfarmfestival.com
Leeds Castle Open Air Classical Concert13 July
�is July will once again see Leeds Castle, one of the most magni�cent castles in England, host this annual spectacular open air classical concert. The Playhouse Theatre
�e Lindley Players always strive to present a balanced programme of shows throughout the year with something for everyone, and 2013 is no exception. �eir traditional pantomime Mother Goose played to packed audiences from 22nd January to 2nd February. �e next Lindley production will be the comedy Enjoy by award-winning playwright Alan Bennett, opening on 9th April. �is play is about an elderly couple facing the demolition of their terrace house in Leeds and who are forced to play
hosts to a rather ‘unusual’ council o�cial. Back to the classics, and opening on 11th June, Shakespeare’s Macbeth – a dangerous and bloody play – this time set in post-war Britain. �en for something completely di�erent: Music
Hall at the Playhouse. �is extravaganza of a show runs from the 23rd to 27th July. Directed by that doyen of the music hall art, Dr Howard Lee, and featuring song and comedy all in the best possible taste.
From 24th to 28th September, the Lindley Players present Beasts and Beauties, eight European folk tales that combine comedy, magic and just enough traditional fairytale gore to entertain an audience.
Many theatrical groups and stage acts hire the theatre. From the 18th to 20th April, �eatrecraft present the well-known comedy CalendarGirls by Tim Firth. �e play revolves around WI members coming up with an ‘alternative calendar’ to raise money for research – naked ambition!
Elvis will be in the building on 27th April when well-known tribute artist Neil J Duncan comes to the Playhouse. Professional acting company Baroque �eatre Company will present Kindly Leave �e Stage , a comedy by John Chapman reminiscent Noises O�. �is farce pokes fun at the theatricality of stage folk and can be seen on 3rd May.
Jazz is on o�er on 28th July when Burt Butler’s Jazz Pilgrims present Jazz on a Summer’s Night with Lynn Falvey. On 5th October there will be a welcome return to the Playhouse for Frank, Dean and Sammy starring in the �e One and Only Rat Pack Show full of music memories and mischief.
On Saturday 19th October �e Playhouse is delighted to present An Evening with Sunny Ormonde which showcases Sunny's huge acting
talent. Well known to all �e Archers fans as Lilian Bellamy, you don’t have to be an Archers fan (though it may help) to enjoy this tremendous evening out with Sunny!
So lots going on, and the Players are always looking for new members – not only actors/actresses, but members for back stage, lighting, sound, make-up, costumes, bar sta� and box o�ce to list just a view of the activities. Members receive a monthly newsletter, members discount on tickets, and have the opportunity to be involved in all of the activities of the Society including the many social events. Co�ee mornings are held at the theatre every Saturday between 10 and 12 noon. If you would like to become a member please contact them via the web site or go and see them on a Saturday morning.
�e theatre has 182 seats, state of the art sound and lighting, workshop, rehearsal studio and a large comfortable bar. �e theatre is also available to hire and is an ideal venue for drama, musicals, comedy and musical acts, and it has very good facilities as a venue for conferences.

guests' as an afterthought, Space were ably supported by two carefully selected up-and-coming local bands, both of whom already have a respectable following.
�e �rst guest act, �e Fruit Group? put on a �ne performance, ensuring their well-crafted, memorable indie-pop tunes grabbed the audience's attention. Next up Kaleidophone took to the stage, instantly impressing with their colourful microphone stand lighting, and infectious head bobbing pop-rock tunes.
Finally the main event started, and it certainly did not disappoint. Space, a band very much at the forefront of the British indie music scene in the mid-nineties, leapt to the stage proving that their timeless tunes, inspired by great 60s acts such as the Kinks and the Who, had lost none of their vibrancy and freshness. �eir performance, enhanced by mohawks, fez hats and giant sunglasses, had retained all of its energy and had people smiling and dancing along almost instantaneously.
Incidentally, it's great to learn that Space have a new album coming out, Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab, I'm sure it will de�nitely be worth a listen!
FILM
Oz �e Great and Powerful
�e cynical world of 2013 is a very sad place for us grown ups ? but that's not necessarily anything new.
In 1939 the makers of MGM's �e Wizard of Oz were quite cynical when realising Frank Baum's 1900 novel; they thought the public were too sophisticated to accept that Oz was a real world, so instead they made Dorothy have a bump on the head. �e critics, being simple souls, loved this. �e public it seems, did not, reasoning as to why the �lm took a long time to become as popular as it is today.
Oz �e Great and Powerful , directed by Sam Raimi, appears to be not at all popular with the critics, who seem to harp on about how it's not a patch on �e Wizard of Oz, even though it's very apparent the current �lm is not meant to be just a prequel, but in fact is based on aspects from all fourteen of Frank Baum's Oz-related novels.
Indeed I have already read a lot of bad reviews on Oz, but then I've never had much faith in critics. Ironic perhaps, because Oz �e Great and Powerful, is a �lm very much about faith. Faith in oneself, faith in friends, and faith in things we can't always see or understand.
Performances are great, James Franco is very likeable as conman-turned-hero, Oscar Diggs, whilst Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz are great as sisters �eodora and Evanora, and the lovely Michelle Williams is fantastic as Glinda.
Technically, Oz rivals its 1939 counterpart, pushing the boundaries with use of colour and sound. �e jump from the 'real world' to the land of Oz was every bit as clever as when Dorothy did that jump from sepia to technicolour all those years ago and the use of 3D is implemented superbly, and appropriately.
Oz �e Great and Powerful is about discovering yourself. It is about giving up the chase of what you don't have and embracing what you do. Which is strange, because as I recall, that was what �e Wizard of O z was about too, something that nearly every '�lm critic' out there seems to have failed to see.

�e Elementalist by Andy Coughlan
As I sit here writing this it is meant to be spring – i.e. warm, and a bit sunny. For some reason the weather has decided that it's winter and snow is falling heavily; rather apt really for the book I am reviewing, �e Elementalist , by local writer Andy Coughlan.
�e main character, Barin Elicerio could be forgiven for being even more fed up about his lot in life, than I am about the weather today. Formerly serving as an Elementalist – someone who could control both the physical and spiritual world – he is framed for crimes he didn't commit, and is forced to hang up his cloak and go under house arrest in a little seaside town.
�e story starts to pick up pace very early, with a huge storm heralding the arrival of a pirate ship and a less than quiet life for Barin. He learns from the pirates that there have been strange happenings all over the world, and it isn't long before he �nds himself drawn into all sorts of terrible adventures, as he battles to solve the mysteries, rescue the woman he loves, and save the world, before it's too late.
Rather than be yet another ‘geeky’ sci-� fantasty book about wizards and goblins, �eElementalist proves to be very accessible to almost anyone, featuring elements (excuse the pun) from many di�erent genres of storytelling, all expertly woven into one rivetingly good yarn. And with more twists and turns than a twisty turny thing, it's a book that will keep you guessing, and ensure that you keep turning the pages until the bitter end.
An outstanding �rst book from a brilliant local writer, and I look forward to see what else Andy can dream up.

From years of personal experience, it’s almost always the event organisers that make or break an event. And on that score, Viva La Sociale have been doing a fantastic job over the past couple of years, making King's Hall in Herne Bay ? once a rather staid old
dance hall ? one of Kent's most interesting venues in which local and national acts can perform. Ably assisted by local lighting/sound company Re-Gen, it's fair to say these folks know how to throw a party!

Little Cauli�ower is a Graduate �eatre Company at the School of Arts, University of Kent and with Creative Youth (IYAF) as one of their Creative Talent companies.
