For more than 50 years the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation has enriched the lives of children with disabilities and their families right here in New Mexico. From programs that pay for medical equipment not covered by insurance to a growing array of recreational opportunities such as adaptive swimming and sled hockey, the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation’s programs focus on each child’s needs, abilities and potential while empowering their families. In 2014, the Foundation’s Board of Directors and staff celebrated 50 years of service to the children of New Mexico. However, the focus of the celebration was not the past, but rather the future – a future in which every child in New Mexico with a disability receives the best possible care, a future in which every child has a home and community that is adapted to meet their needs, a future in which every child in has the opportunity to participate in a recreational program in their community. As we look back on the last 50 years, we are emboldened by our accomplishments and determined to do more, and we simply cannot do what we do without your support. We thank each of you for making it possible for the Foundation to provide essential resources – and hope – to these extraordinary children and their families. Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation 3

Carrie Tingley Hospital was established in 1937 by the New Mexico Department of Health to treat children afflicted

with Polio. With the development of the Polio vaccine 1963, the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation was established

(as a distinct and separate entity from the hospital) with the charge of supporting Carrie Tingley Hospital, the patients

of the hospital and their families.

In 1981 the hospital became a component of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Today Carrie Tingley

Hospital is the states only pediatric rehabilitation hospital providing care to children and adolescents with complex

musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions, rehabilitation needs, developmental issues and long-term

physical disabilities.

Israel Castillo We remember….

Israel loved music and wrote raps with his brother and many friends. He went to college, and was often seen texting between classes. While this sounds like your average young person today, Israel was far from typical. He was born with life-threatening chronic asthma and Blount’s disease, a growth disorder that affects the bones in the lower legs. Israel spent much of his life in the hospital with his family always worrying that each visit would be his last. In 2014 Israel passed away but he left us with a spirit optimism and certainty that we can overcome any challenge.


Helping Children Supporting Families Partnering with Carrie Tingley Hospital

Partnership with the UNM Carrie Tingley HospitalThe Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation funds equipment, programs and research studies that help Carrie Tingley Hospital provide the highest level of care to patients. In 2006, the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation pledged $1.6 million over a 10 year period to support the UNM Carrie Tingley Hospital Wing of the Barbara and Bill Richardson Pavilion at UNM Children’s Hospital. Thanks to the generous support of our community this pledge will be fully paid in 2016!

Patient and Family AssistanceThe Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation assists patients and their families with:

• Wheelchair Ramps

• Vehicle Modifications

• Home Modifications

• Durable Medical or Therapeutic Equipment not covered by insurance

• Emergency Rent and Utility Assistance

Families can apply for assistance by contacting a social worker at Carrie Tingley Hospital or contacting the Foundation’s Family Liaison. Assistance is awarded based on need.

Quality of Life ProgramsThe Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation sponsors adaptive recreational programs for children with special needs that include:

• Adaptive Cycling

• Inclusive Dance

• Therapeutic Horsemanship

• Wheelchair Basketball

• Adaptive Sports Camp

The Foundation provides scholarships based on financial need; no child is turned away.
