HAVE YOU ARRIVED??How do you achieve your potential?
Would you say you are professionally fulfilled?
Are you busy trying to impress other people?
How do you define success in your heart of hearts?
Do you feel victimized in your career?
CATAPULTING YOURSELF TO SUCCESSManaging your career is your responsibility – not your boss’s.Reassess your careers at intervals.Take a very personal look at how you
define success in your heart of hearts. Know your strengths , weaknesses and
passion.Identify & excel at the task critical to
your successDemonstrate character & leadership.
KNOWING YOURSELF Write down two or three “greatest
strengths” & two or three most “significant weaknesses”.
Have an ongoing process of “seeking coaching”, asking for very “specific feedback” & “being receptive” to input from people at various levels within your organization.
These initiatives take “time, humility & a willingness to confront weakness, fears & blind spots” that you might usually ignore.
KNOWING YOURSELF The next challenge is to figure out what you
truly enjoy doing?. What’s your dream job? How well does it match what you are currently doing?.
Most individuals base their career choices excessively on the views of their “peers and popular opinion”, instead of on whether they would actually love their work.
Loving what you do gives you the strength to weather “personal setbacks”, “overcome adversity” , face and “address your weakness” and work the long hours typically needed to reach your potential.
EXCELLING AT CRITICAL TASKTasks that are central to your chosen
enterprise are the critical tasks. You need to assess what will “drive
success in your position” and ask yourself whether you enjoy those key tasks. This will determine how to spend your time and develop your skills.
Many people stall their career by playing it safe.
DEMONSTRATING CHARACTER & LEADERSHIP Excellent leaders are willing to do things for
others without regard to whats in it for them. Leaders speak up even when they know they
might be expressing an unpopular view Emerging leaders must spend time deciding
what they truly believe versus trying to guess what the boss might want to hear
When you do suffer a setback, be willing to step back & objectively assess your own role in the event. This mind set will help you learn from inevitable setbacks & help you bounce back, eventually.
