It is sad to see the end of the Christmas season, but as we clear it all away for another year remember to recycle carefully. According to the FDC’s website “Fenland produces an extra 350 tonnes of waste over the holiday period”.

Dear Residents of Doddington

Welcome to 2020! We hope that you had an enjoyable Christmas and that you are ready to face not only a new year, but a new decade! Now is the time we make plans to “get things done”. Some of us will be sure to want to lose weight this year or do more exercise or maybe even just relax a little more. We hope you find something in our January Diary to inspire you to get out and about during the winter months.

If you have ever made a New Year’s resolution that lasted past January let us know, we would love to hear your story. Maybe you have a different story to tell - the day you met the Queen or ran the London marathon or met somebody famous - write your story in about 300 words and send it in, with a picture if you have one. We promise we will read them all and print as many as we can.

The last few months of 2019 were very busy for us as we were raising money to help with printing costs. We are delighted to say that all the hard work was worth it - together with the very kind donations from the George race nights and raffle, it means that we start 2020 with a healthy bank balance.

Thank you to the people who completed our survey, the results are on page 29. Over the coming months we will be doing our best to include the things you have asked for, including an events list - so if you are organising an event be sure to let us know!

Finally a reminder of our 2020 Christmas Card competition. The trees and lights may be packed away for another year, but there are likely to be more wintery scenes of Doddington to be captured. Competition details will be announced in the Spring.

Christmas Lights

Doddington Christmas Lights Committee would like to thank the residents, stall holders, volunteers, Scouts and Guides, the venue committee members or owners, the entertainers and of course you the residents for the amazing support you gave on “switch-on”day.

A big thank you also to Ace Communications, Paul Jackson, Alan Lavender, Roger Mayes and all of the helpers that gave their time to put up (and take down!) the lights. Thank you also to the kind residents who made us very welcome refreshments, which kept us all going! Thank you to D and J Transport and Webb Builders for their kind donations.

The Lights Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank our Chairman, David Curtis, because without him the village Christmas lights really wouldn’t happen. Behind the scenes he puts in many hours making**, checking and fixing the illuminations, so thank you from your committee - you are the best!

Thank you to everyone who entered the Best Lit House competition, unfortunately the winner had not been decided before the Diary had to go to print, so it will be announced in the next edition and on our Facebook page.

Finally thank you to Santa for taking time to visit Doddington. We have had a fantastic year and hope you agree that with your help and support the lights have been even better this year. We hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

Editor’s note: We have been told, that “making, checking and fixing” doesn’t mean just checking the fuses and bulbs - David has actually been making the magnificent illumination frames that could be seen from one end of the village to the other. This has saved hundreds of pounds and produced a spectacle for the whole village to be proud of. Well done David !

The Magic of the Movies

It was a cold and wet November evening when we attended the Allgood School of Dancing show in the Village Hall and what a treat it was. The dancing school put on a show every two years and all their students are invited to join in – no matter how long they have been dancing. Some of the dancers had only been with the school for a few months, others for many years, but it was obvious that they had all been working very hard to put on such a varied show.

The show opened with a James Bond medley by the dancers from the Ballroom and Latin classes, which was followed by 4-year-old Emilia dancing her tap solo. The audience was captivated, and the scene was set for great dancing, good music and fantastic costumes.

Not all the performers were from Doddington, but there were certainly many familiar faces, some of whom were experiencing their first performance on stage – not that any of them showed any nervousness! The little ones were clearly enjoying watching the older dancers as much as the audience did. Well done everyone who took part, especially the choreographers and no doubt an army of helpers who are always needed to put this kind of production together.

Thank you to SANTA for making another visit to Doddington in the lead up to Christmas. We hope you all had a good time. All the money raised will go towards next year’s Carnival and Sports Day - unfortunately our expenses grow every year and we really are grateful for your support.

A Happy New Year from Doddington Singers!

Doddington Singers is a newly-formed community choir, founded in the late summer of 2019. In that short time we have covered a varied repertoire of songs – including hits by The Beatles and Take That – eventually crescendo-ing to our debut performance: entertaining the residents of Aria Court, March. We were especially delighted to help

get the festivities underway at the Doddington Christmas Lights Switch-On. We also thoroughly enjoyed celebrating our first season together with our night out at The Three Tuns for Christmas Dinner.

We are a very friendly bunch, from all walks of life, and are keen to welcome new members…even if you think you can’t sing! The Singers meet to rehearse (and have a good giggle) every Tuesday in the Methodist Church (behind the Clock Tower), from 7.45pm – 9pm and subscriptions are only £2 per person per week. A diverse programme of songs is planned for the New Year; ranging from popular show tunes to hit pop songs and contemporary classics.

We have a Facebook group – Doddington Singers – or you can phone Kate on 01354 740602 / 07773 674990 for more information.

WIMBLINGTON & DODDINGTON NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Sadly, The Three Tuns Pub in Doddington had a break-in during the day where two men broke through the back gates to steal property. Shockingly this just demonstrates that thieves do not care whether it is day or night or if people might be present! So please continue to be aware and look out for your neighbours.

We are continuing to organise our Neighbourhood Watch event which will be held on 19th March in Wimblington Village Hall from 10.30 – 12.30. Residents will be welcome to pop along to get advice or discuss community issues, safety and crime prevention.

Please remember to always report any suspicious or actual criminal activity direct to the police by ringing 101 or if a crime is in progress 999. Don’t forget you can report online at www.cambs.police.uk/report. If you post incidents on Facebook with the good intention of warning friends, remember that the police are unlikely to be aware of your posting and it could hinder their general enquiries. If you wish to be kept updated on local crime then visit www.facebook.com/FenCops.

We are looking for volunteers to join our Speedwatch group to enable us to increase the number of patrols we can carry out. Many people stop us saying we aren’t doing enough or at the right time, but we need your help to be able to do this. For further information on Community Speedwatch please contact Joanne Rose for Wimblington or Andrea Harrison for Doddington by email at [email protected]. If you require further NHW information or would like to join, then please contact Bill Harrison 01354 741406 for Wimblington & Stonea or Andrea Harrison 07766 658701 for Doddington.

Parkrun

Are you interested in running within a group? Perhaps a parkrun is for you. Volunteers up and down the country organise, weekly, 5km timed runs. They are open to everyone, are free, safe and easy to take part in. They encourage people of every ability to take part; from those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; everyone is welcome. March is where you can find our nearest event.

Village Walk

Come and join us on the first Tuesday of each month for a walk around Doddington. The walk is open to all ages and all mobilities. We will stay on firm ground if it is wet, but if the group are able and the weather permits we might be a little more adventurous! We usually end with a coffee.

We asked “what do you enjoy about this group?” and were told “doing some exercise and meeting new people” and “finding new parts of the village”.

We asked “what difference has attending this group made to your life?” and were told “feeling more part of village life”, “meeting new people” and “it has given me a reason to get out more and make new friends and laugh, even though many people have debilitating and painful conditions”.

Take up a new activitiy for the New Year and walk off those Christmas mince pies!

The next walk will take place on Tuesday 7th January at 10.15 am. Meet us at the seat opposite the gold letter box to join the group. Everyone is welcome.

Flourishing Births

My name is Nichola Greentree and I setup Flourishing Births in January 2019 I am based in March but my classes can take me all over Cambridgeshire and the surrounding areas.

Since starting my classes I have had many expectant parents attend my courses, they leave me with a new found confidence and positivity towards the birth and early parenting of their new-borns.

I have always had a passion for teaching antenatal classes, having attended lessons with my first born over 10 years ago I was disheartened by the way everyone only ever seemed to remember and talk about the bad experiences. Going on to have 3 wonderful birth experiences I wanted to spread the word that great births do and can happen - I wanted to study and learn how I could help others realise their potential in getting the births they desired. I found a wealth of knowledge and a new understanding of the amazing journey of pregnancy and birth. I realised all mothers have choices and they can make decisions to enhance their experience of giving birth.

My name is Dawn Breacher, I run the Doddington Slimming World Groups on Mondays 9.30am, 11.30am, 5.30pm & 7.30pm.

I walked through the doors as a member myself in the year 2000 looking like my before photo; I have lost 5 stones in total and have never looked back. I still go now as a member, I stay to the meeting, I get the help with new healthy recipe ideas to cook and it picks me up when I feel down. There is never a shame in a gain. I have improved my cholesterol, my blood pressure has come down and even though I have an under-active thyroid I am still able to lose weight. I walk my dogs daily and have got Body Magic awards for achieving that too. I love that feeling Slimming World has given me.

If you would like to lose weight and more importantly improve your health then a warm welcome awaits you at any of my groups,

Much Love Dawn x

“A Reader’s Story

I can’t run” – is something I have been saying for as long as I can remember – but as I was approaching 60, I thought I would give it a go! So I downloaded the Couch-2-5K instructions onto my phone and off I went. To my surprise I completed the first week and was encouraged to carry on. Some weeks were definitely harder than others, so I just repeated that week; not moving on until I was ready. I am not sure who was more amazed when I completed the 5K Santa Run – me or the family!!! That was two years ago, and I am still running. I feel much better mentally and have lost two stones in weight. I continue to be amazed that actually “I can run!”.

Editor’s Note: Have you completed a personal challenge or done something you never thought you would or could do. Let us know your story - although we can’t promise to print them all, we will certainly read them all.

Horticultural Society

The Horticultural Society has been actively discussing the possibility of providing allotments for the village. At our Show last year we received a positive response to our questionnaire regarding allotments and this has encouraged the committee to seek a piece of land suitable for allotments. Currently we are still discussing options, however one thing is clear – we will need funds to put any plans into practice. In view of this, the committee have been looking at securing funding from other sources and we are delighted to announce, the Horticultural Society has been awarded £250 from Jack’s Supports organisations! Voting began in the Chatteris store on 9th December and continues until 8th March for the opportunity to be awarded an additional £500. Thank you to everyone who has voted already and we urge you to keep voting!

Work on the Programme for this year’s Show day is well underway and it is planned to go out much earlier this year. Slight changes have been made, so please take a close look when you pick yours up! There is something for everyone and if you haven’t taken part in the Show before there will be plenty of time to get your entries ready. This year’s Show Day is Saturday 25th July. Please keep reading the Diary for more announcements regarding the Programme, Show Day and allotments or ‘like’ our Facebook page @DoddingtonVillageSummerShow.

Doddington Recreation Committee

We are delighted to announce Doddington Recreation Committee has been awarded £250 as one of Jack’s Supports organisations. The money will go towards making our annual Easter Egg Hunt extra special! Voting has now started in the Chatteris store until Sunday 8th March for our chance to receive an additional £500! Please show your support and vote for the Recreation Committee when you shop in Jack’s. We would like to thank Jack’s for the award and look forward to making plans for the Easter Egg Hunt. Thank you to everyone who came to our Bingos during December. The festive spirit was abundant, with lots of Christmassy treats taken home. Special thanks to Bridget Knowles for generously providing each child who attended our Family Bingo with an advent calendar.

This month’s Bingo will take place on Thursday 9th January in the Pavilion. There are many ways to find out about our upcoming events; ‘like’ our Facebook page @doddingtonpavilion, see our noticeboards on the Pavilion and outside the Church Rooms or simply read the Diary each month!

Happy New Year!

LIONEL WALDEN PRIMARY SCHOOL

During recent weeks, we have held special events including a Remembrance Day assembly. We supported the BBC Children in Need campaign, raising over £300, by holding a non-uniform day and ‘wearing spots’ for Pudsey Bear. We also participated in the national Anti-Bullying Week when pupils focused on being kind, respectful and supportive of each other. We also took part in Walk to School Week, an event which is held every May and November, to promote exercise and road safety awareness whilst aiming to reduce congestion around school.

Our children have continued to participate in sporting events with other schools in the area including a tag rugby festival, a cross-country competition and a football tournament. Our children enjoyed representing Lionel Walden and received many positive comments relating to their team work and sportsmanship.

During the festive month of December, our youngest pupils in Pre-School and Reception have enjoyed performing a delightful Nativity for the whole school, parents, grandparents, family friends, school governors and members of the local community. They told the story of Jesus’ birth through actions and songs, ending with a wonderful tableau with every child looking immensely proud.

All children in Years 1 to 6 worked very hard rehearsing ‘Rapunzel’. Once again, the children have been superb in delivering their lines clearly and confidently, acting out their roles with enthusiasm and singing the many songs beautifully. Thank you to all staff for their hard work and involvement in the production of Rapunzel and the Nativity. Thank you to Ace Communications for very kindly providing sound and lighting again.

Our display boards along the main thoroughfare through school depict Winter songs. All classes, including Pre-School, have created fabulous displays. The children were delighted to see their work, when they entered school, along with the Christmas trees and decorations. Thank you to Doddington Garden Centre for donating a tree again this year and also to Megaplants – they looked splendid!

The Lionel Walden School Association organised a very successful Christmas Fair which was held on 7th December. There was a range of activities including face painting, cookie decorating, plate decorating, a lucky dip and a tombola stall. Parents enjoyed refreshments in the hall whilst their children had ‘Breakfast with Santa’ which consisted of cereal and toast, a gift and a photograph with the special visitor! This event is enjoyed by all and raised a substantial amount for school funds. Thank you to everyone involved. The LWSA also recently held a film night for pupils.

The ‘Open the Book’ team of local residents, who come into school throughout the year to lead a weekly assembly, shared the Christmas Story with our pupils. The school choir enjoyed entertaining the 100 Club at their Christmas lunch.

The children had fun at their Christmas parties and Christmas lunch was served in the hall with table decorations made by our catering team. Our final event of the term was the Carol Service at St Mary’s Church, on 19th December, which included traditional carols and songs, readings and musical items.

Everyone at Lionel Walden Primary School hope the residents of Doddington had a safe and happy Christmas! The village looked wonderful all lit up!

This page is kindly sponsored by THE GEORGE INN

The George Community Hub is a not for profit group run by the George Inn Doddington. It aims to provide activities, information and educational events that are accessible to the local community. They are held in either our Coffee Bar or in the Marquee outside.

At the end of November, we had some fun in the childrens club learning about nature and how we can help them. Thank you to everyone who donated items to us. We have started building a big bug hotel and the children were busy decorating clay pots to put inside. We also made some bird feeders using string, pine cones, seeds and suet which was fun and very messy! Little water bowls were decorated for the children to take home and finally we used our imagination to make some bugs and pictures with freestyle crafting. The January children’s club is on the 11th January and we will be doing indoor crafting. If you would like to donate any items that we could use then please pop them in.

On January the 7th we welcome Age UK for their monthly hub. This will be the second one that has taken place and they are a great place to get information on anything you or a relative may need. They take place in our coffee bar and run from 10.00 – 12.00. Just pop in, no need to book.

We are also developing other parts of the hub and one area is our games club which will be available for anyone to attend. More information will be published shortly on when these will be going ahead.

We very much look forward to seeing you and we can be contacted on 01354 741177, [email protected] or our facebook page, ‘The George Inn Community Hub’ for any further information.

New Year Resolutions - Top 10 tips

1. Make only one resolution. Your chances of success are greater when you channel energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour.

2. Don't wait until New Year's Eve to choose your resolution. Think about what you want to achieve.

3. Avoid previous resolutions. Revisiting past resolutions sets you up for frustration and disappointment.

4. Don't run with the crowd. Instead think about what you really want out of life.5. Break your goal into a series of steps, focus on sub-goals that are concrete,

measurable and time-based.6. Tell your friends and family about your goals. You're more likely to get support

and will want to avoid failure.7. To stay motivated, make a checklist of how achieving your resolution will help

you.8. Give yourself a small reward whenever you achieve a sub-goal, which will help

to motivate you and give you a sense of progress. 9. Document your progress by keeping a handwritten journal, completing a

computer spreadsheet or covering a notice board with graphs or pictures.10. Expect to revert to your old habits from time to time. Treat any failure as a

temporary setback rather than a reason to give up altogether.

Doddington Village Sports & Carnival 1940’s Dance

Friday 8th May was the anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), marking 70 years since the end of 2nd World War in Europe. All over the country communities have been en-couraged to celebrate in different ways, here in Doddington we had our own celebration 1940’s Dance. Doddington Village Hall was transported back to 1945, complete with military vehicles parked outside & a mock Anderson Shelter entrance. Inside the hall was filled with bunting & 1940’s memorabilia, all kindly borrowed from Ramsey 1940’s Weekend & reenactment group Home Front In Action. Thank you to everyone who came along & helped in any way. The evening was a tre-mendous success, hosted by The 40’s Home Front, with lots of authentic dancing from the era. Everyone made a huge effort to dress accord-ingly & take part in all the dances.

A row of bottles on my shelf

Caused me to analyse myself. One yellow pill I have to pop

Goes to my heart so it won't stop. A little white one that I take

Goes to my hands so they won't shake. The blue ones that I use a lot

Tell me I'm happy when I'm not. The purple pill goes to my brain And tells me that I have no pain.

The capsules tell me not to wheeze Or cough or choke or even sneeze. The red ones, smallest of them all

Go to my blood so I won't fall. The orange ones, very big and bright Prevent my leg cramps in the night.

Such an array of brilliant pills Helping to cure all kinds of ills. But what I'd really like to know,

Is what tells each one where to go!

Doddington 80 Years Ago

January 1940An RAF light bomber made an emergency landing on Manor farm when an engine failed. The crew of three received only minor injuries. Delighted children skating on the near-by Manor moat went to investigate.

The Isle of Ely County Council discussed the problem of Dykemoor Drove. They had received a petition signed by 34 tenant farmers asking for the road to be improved. It was estimated that it would cost £7,800 to improve the 2 ¼ mile road. It was agreed to write to the tenants to see if they would pay a third of the cost, then the County Council would also pay a third and the Government the other third.

The church was broken into and the offertory box emptied. An attempt to open the safe was unsuccessful. A party of 110 Sunday School children and some parents went to see the pantomime “Babes in the Wood” at the Embassy Theatre Peterborough. The trip was organized by Miss Ridge and Mr K Behagg. Three buses were needed.

The following Doddington men serving in France were sent woollen goods by the Mothers Union knitting group: Trooper G Edgeley, L/Cpl J C Schniedau and Privates D B Young, A E Weeks and E Cundell. Another eight parcels were sent to men serving in the UK.

Mr L W Sedley, retired Head of Doddington School, was appointed as a councillor on the North Witchford Rural District Council in place of Mr J B Clapham deceased.

The annual party for the children of the members of the Women’s Institute was held in the Church Room. The tea was prepared by Mrs J W Yorke and her helpers and included jellies and fancy cakes. After tea games were played and several children sang songs and gave recitations. Each child received a gift and an orange from the committee.

The Parish Council received a petition from the residents of Benwick Road west of the Workhouse asking for the electricity main to be extended to their properties. The clerk was asked to forward it to the electricity company.

The clock dial on the clock tower had been broken by snowballers “who were not children”. The Police had been informed.

A notice was placed that 1a 3r 32p of land belonging to the Doddington Town Lands Charity situate adjoining Coldham Barn Lane and known as the Seven Rod Dole was being sold for £190 unless a higher offer or objections were received.

to be continued....

On a personal note, I would like to thank the Diary and other villagers for the expressions of sympathy I have received following the death of my Mother. They are very much appreciated.

The evening's entertainment was given by Rosemary Wheeler and Friends. Rosemary played the piano, Rex sang baritone and Jennifer sang soprano. They sang songs from the Musicals, Christmas songs and Rex also did funny poems and jokes. They were thanked by Sally Shortland. Refreshments of puddings and cheeseboard were served by the Committee and Valerie Gobie handed out crackers to everyone. The Secret Santa presents were given out.
