Invest in Your Home By Decluttering

Decluttering can me the most cost effective way to improve your property for sale or just enjoyment. We are very fortunate to have volunteers organizing the Ramsay parade of garage sales and the community clean up to help us do just that. If your looking to sell some items, I have found the Ramsay/ Inglewood swap & sell, Kijiji and Letgo excellent for getting rid of some great items I no longer needed.

Doing this years before you sell can help you save time later, and enjoy your house now.

Spotted in Ramsay - Spring!Briana Inlow

Dandelion yellow is the predominant colour in Ramsay these days - a bright reminder that spring has

almost passed. Eager gardeners have planted their annuals already, and window boxes and planters are starting to take shape. Back alley rhubarb is being shared, and see below for Nancy’s delicious rhubarb squares recipe.

A giant “thank you” to Board Director David Graham for orga-nizing an outstanding community clean-up on May 21st. Huge amounts of trash were cleaned from back alleys, and a steady stream of cars snaked into the hall parking lot where eager volun-teers emptied waste into garbage trucks. Thank you to all the vol-unteers (there were many) and we especially appreciated the deli-cious BBQ lunch provided by local Ramsay caterer Wade Paterson of Boreal Cuisine. It was a fantastic turnout, and a real community builder.

The City will announce the final path of the Green Line on June 21st, but I have been forewarned there may be a boxed area on the map labelled “yet to be determined - more study needed”, or something to that effect. Fingers crossed!

Let’s commit to strolling our streets this summer, and make new friends along the way.

— John HoltNancy’s Rhubarb Squares Recipe (“Actually my Aunt Cherie’s recipe”): Mix together: 3/4 cup butter; 1 1/2 cups flour; and 1/2 cup white sugar. Mix together: 3 cups rhubarb; 2 eggs; 2 tbsp. flour; and 1 cup brown sugar. Then: Pat half of crumb mixture in bottom of 9” x 9” square pan. (line with foil or grease). Add filling and top with remaining crumbs. For metal pan, bake at 350°F for 1 hour. For a pyrex dish, bake at 325°F for 1 hour.

Here is what has been happening with Civic Affairs this past month:

Green Line Update

The final alignment options go to council at the end of June. I was told by the Green Line team that we will know what the final option is before the council meeting. I am hopeful, and have a pretty good feeling that this will be the final option. But, until we hear for sure, the MacDonald option is still on the table. You can always find out more information on the City of Calgary Green Line Information Website.

Stampede Pre-Meeting

In anticipation of the upcoming Stampede (July 7-16, 2017), we will be meeting with the City to help ensure that what happened last year will not be repeated this year. If you have any concerns, please send me an email.

There are currently three options being presented. If you have not already provided input, please do so online. Although there is not funding currently for this project, we need to ensure that Ramsay is providing our input into the concepts. The concerns over the cur-rent options include: How do we get South easily? How does this impact our community connection to Erlton/Mission?

You can review the options and provide input here until Wednesday June 7: engage.calgary.ca/25AveStudy

The Dandy Brewing Company

A proposed new brew pub. This was presented to me by the devel-oper, but there is not yet a development permit for the property.

From the Dandy Brewing Company blog: thedandybrewingcompa-ny.com/blog-1/2017/5/18/yes-its-true

“Yes. It is true. We are in the process of building a new brewery. Is it set in stone? Never. Is it ever? The plans are very early in the process, and although we are cautiously optimistic as every day passes and more and more hurdles are jumped, we know there is a lot that can go wrong.

“We are super pumped to be moving to a neighborhood so rich in brewing history as well as developing as a modern craft beer cen-ter for the city and province.”

¸

Snowden Building

Exciting things are brewing for this site. I met with a developer earlier this month that was looking to hopefully close on the site within 30 days. If the deal finalizes, future development on the site could see a new restaurant and another brew pub.

Last year, I invited the residents of Ramsay to join me for a Community Objectives Workshop (COW) to discuss the challenges, opportunities, strengths, and

overall vision for the community. I was humbled by the number of residents, social institutions, and businesses that came out to spend a gorgeous Saturday with me and their neighbours.

At the conclusion of this workshop, I promised two deliverables:1. The Raw Data Report from the workshops; and2. The Ward 9 Annual Strategic Report.

After meeting with hundreds of Ward 9 neighbours, I am very pleased to tell you that the Ward 9 Annual Strategic Report is com-plete. You can find an online version of the report (as well as the Raw Data Report) here - www.gccarra.ca/cow-strategic-report/.

If you would like a hard copy, please let us know at [email protected] and we will be happy to mail one out.

Here are some of the highlights, findings and what my office has done, is doing, and will do for the community. While not exhaus-tive, I hope it gives you a preview of the report and what it says for the future of our neighbourhood.HighlightsMaintaining neighbourhood heritage and character is at the forefront of the minds of our Ramsay neighbours. During our Community Objectives Workshop it was made clear that redevelop-ment, specifically with the introduction of the Green Line, must be thoughtful, engaging, and enhancing to Ramsay.

Below are some of the major themes identified by Ramsayites at the Community Objectives Workshop:

• Improving Neighbourhood Infrastructure• Neighbourhood Affordability & Diversity• Community Standards• Improving Pedestrian Realm• Planning & Development• Supporting Local Business• Improved Parks & Green Spaces• Cycling Infrastructure• Network ConnectivityBelow is a list of your Team Ward 9 goals over the short, medium, and long term:Short Term• Successfully delivering a Lilydale relocation program• Advocating for and supporting the new City of Calgary

Community Cleanup David Graham

A big thank you to everyone who participated and especially all our volunteers, RCA Board members, Chef Wade Patterson, Alderman Carra and city employees (Chuck and his team) who worked tire-lessly for several hours to ensure our event was a big success.

I have summarized information from the event as follows:

• We filled ~2 large packer trucks and 1 small packer truck and 1 organic packer truck

• Recycled 693kg of electronic waste (Techno Trash)

• Metal recycling was a big hit. The metal recycling company representative (Mike) filled his trailer.

• We received a few bikes for the Syrian refugees

• The swap/free store was a big hit with a few items getting repurposed and/or finding a new home.

• Chef Wade’s pulled pork with beans and salad was excellent and really appreciated by hungry volunteers and city employ-ees.

• The second photo shows the line-up of vehicles waiting to unload at 8:40am when the event didn’t start until 9. I appre-ciate everyone’s help at this early time to make sure things ran smoothly. In fact, we had a very steady stream of drop-offs throughout the whole event.

• Thanks to Cor Koster, Kevin Watkins, and Keith and his vin-tage green truck for providing use of their trucks for the pick-up work!

• The City Employees indicated they really enjoyed working with Ramsay volunteers. They noted the efficiency of the drop-offs and Chef Wade’s food as highlights!

It was great to see such a good turn-out, get reacquainted with neighbours I hadn’t seen for a while, and meet new Ramsayites. Looking forward to your feedback and thank you for being a part of our great community!

Regards,

— David Graham, Event Organizer

This summer, why ship your kids all the way across town when you can walk or bike to some of Inglewood and Ramsay’s local summer day camps?

Between the two communities, we have a lot to offer. Here are the ones I have found:

DramAnticsThe Alexandra Centre Society’s DramAntics kids’ theatre camp will be running its summer program again from July 31 to August 5. In this program the kids aged 9-16 write a play, build the set, create the props, make the costumes, and produce the play to go onstage at the Calgary Fringe Festival during Inglewood Sunfest. This summer’s theme: Monsters, Movies, and Mad Scientists. Call the Alexandra Centre Society at 403-269-5588, go online at alexandracentresociety.org or email [email protected] to register or for more information.

Inglewood Bird SanctuaryThe Inglewood Bird Sanctuary has some great camps. Growing Wild (4-5 years), Wild for Wetlands (6-9 years), Winged Wonders (6-9 years), Raptors Delight (10-12 years). To register go to calgary.ca and search for “Day Camps”

Fort CalgaryHead over the bridge for a full week of fun & learning at Fort Cal-gary! Explore Calgary’s past starting from a time when bison out-numbered humans then journey to the future of our city! To register head to www.fortcalgary.com/programs/summercamps/

4Cats Art Studio4Cats Art Studio has a large variety of week-long, half-day and full-day art camps for kids who love art. Go to www.4cats.com/ingle-wood-summer for more information and to register.

Park n’ PlayThe City of Calgary Park n’ Play is booked at the Alexandra Centre Society building from July 17 to 21. Call 3-1-1 for more informa-tion.

YMCA Kids in MotionThe YMCA Kids in Motion summer camps are running in July and August also at the Alexandra Centre Society building. Contact the YMCA for more information and to register: www.ymcacalgary.org

Those are the camps I’ve found in our neighborhoods of Inglewood and Ramsay. If you know of more, keep adding to the list and let your neighbors know. We have a vibrant community! Let’s all hang out together!

Ten years ago the cover of the newsletter featured an impres-sive lineup of classic cars from the Ramsay Day Show ‘n’ Shine, an aspect of the day sadly missed by me. Board President Judy Hellevang touched on a succesful Ramsay Cleanup Day, WaterWatch training, the Torode Development (RIP), Lilydale and the Crib Club. The Spring Fling

was a success, and Civic Affairs’ Catherine Cartmill discussed the new Police shop, Torode (again), and thanked Michael Benoit for his service. The Tidbits page was busy, and Taras Semeniuk followed up on unilateral Traffic Calming changes by the City, as well as the City committing to bury the LRT at 25th Ave (HA!) and reopening of the

Elbow River Pathway. MLA Denis Herard trumpeted tax credits for charities, and Beautification’s Brenda Japp mourned the City’s refusal to allow trees along Spiller/8th. Ramsay School Principal Barb James provided an end-of-year wrap-up and Events Liason Michael Benoit provided a final screed on the Stampede. Beth Carter profiled new Ramsayite and CBC columnist Julie van Rosendaal who, as Nancy did in this issue, provided a Rhubarb recipe for us.

Main Gallery: Marie Gelinas – Giles presents “It’s Not All Black and White”June 2- June 28, 2017Colour has changed the way I see life and think about love.

Red Gallery: Helen Newsome presents “Dual Focus”June 2 – June 30, 2017As an Artist I am often told that I must narrow my focus and concentrate on one medium, one genre, one style, or a consistent theme. I struggle with that suggestion. I take great pleasure in changing things up and working in both representational and ab-stract realms. This current exhibit will focus on both types of art.

Stairway Gallery: Tahira Karim presents “Willka” (sacred in Quechua)June 2- June 30, 2017This exhibition comprises a series of paintings created in Cusco, Peru, the epicenter of the Quechuan peoples and Incan History. The works explore the sacredness within everyday life, in the Ande-an mountains.

Upstairs Gallery: Samantha Charette presents “Multifaceted Self”June 2 – June 30This series speaks to the contemporary and ongoing dialogue between the construction of the identity of self and the collective cultural identity, specifically in relation to social media and the digital world.

Missed Connections

You Got My Goose - You were having a snack along the river with a flock of friends. You were absolutely fetching. You had a long beauti-ful neck, and looked like you would be a good swimmer. You walked with a bit of a waddle, but I found it adorable and would have loved to run to you. My family had me on a bit of a tight leash that day, so we continued walking past you. You tried to duck my gaze, but I know we shared a moment, and I don’t mind a little chase.

Sincerely,

K94PAW

June marks Esker Foundation’s 5th birthday! We are so grateful for your continued support at our exhibitions, public programs and opening receptions. We consider ourselves lucky to be

part of the Ramsay community among such wonderful neighbours. On behalf of our founders, Jim and Susan Hill, and the Esker team: thank you!

Join us in celebrating by checking out one of our current exhibitions or public programs. Jason de Haan: Oh for eyes! At night we dream of eyes! and Anton Vidokle: The Communist Revolution Was Caused By The Sun are in the main space until August 27, and Laura Dutton: Night Comes On is in the Project Space until July 23.

We have an exciting line-up of public programs this month to keep visitors of all ages engaged. Our first Bring the Baby tour of the season is on Friday, June 2nd from 12:00-12:30pm. Have baby-friendly fun while discussing and ques-tioning the current exhibitions on this relaxed, social tour. On Thursday, June 7th, from 2:30-3:15pm we invite seniors to join us for Lifelong Learn-ers, a social tour and discussion of our current exhibitions. Finally, we kick off our first Master Class for Families – an educational, energetic, hands-on program for kids ages 5-10 years old, accompanied by a

parent or caregiver – on Sunday, June 18, 1:00-2:00pm.

On June 16th, Esker Foundation is proud to host Dr. Don Brink-man, Director of Preservation & Research at the Royal Tyrrell Mu-seum. Dr. Brinkman will offer exciting insight on Shelly, the Royal Tyrrell’s infamous soft-shelled turtle, a member of a group of turtles that has remained unchanged for 100 million years and is featured in Jason de Haan’s A house that tells you where you came from.

REPORT CRIME ONLINE

Did you know that you can report certain types of crimes to the Calgary Police Service online? When you use the CPS Citizen Online Police Report System, you can submit a report about a crime immediately and print a copy of the police report for free.

When you use the quick and easy online reporting system, it can help you by providing reports for your records. It also helps the police to identify and address crime trends in your area.

What can I report online? The online reporting system currently takes reports about the following crimes, as long as their value is less than $5,000 (Canadian), there’s no known suspect, and the incident happened within Calgary’s city limits:

Lost Property

Theft

Damage/Mischief to Property

Theft from Vehicle

Damage/Mischief to Vehicle

To report crime online, go to www.calgarypolice.ca, and click on “Report a Crime Online” Follow the screen prompts to fill in the information and submit your report. If you have a problem with the system, there’s 24-hour support available. When you’re finished, you can print a copy of the police report to keep for your records. Police will review your case, and will contact you if needed.

EMERGENCY? Call 911

911 is to be used only for emergencies (police, fire and medical) where an immediate response is required. This should be called only if there is an emergency and lives are in danger, immediate assistance is required or there is a crime in progress.

CALGARY POLICE SERVICE NON-EMERGENCY - 403-266-1234 This should be used for all non-emergency situations, where an immediate response is not required. This number should be called when time has elapsed since the incident, the suspect is not on scene or you are calling about a nuisance issue (i.e. noise complaints, suspicious people, intoxication, etc.). Police will attend on a lower priority basis.

ELDERHOUSE… It’s about Caring for Inglewood & Ramsay

Seniors. Every step of our process has been community centred, beginning with our first affordable housing planning exercise, many years ago. At every point, we have experienced thoughtful consideration, and true concern for neighbours and friends. We cannot think of a more welcoming community for this project.

It’s time to make it happen! Plans for Elderhouse are underway! We have done our best to plan around the priorities that we heard from seniors and others in the community, embracing the location of the site, and its interface with park lands. The resulting design will look and function like a shared house, be fully accessible, and allow generous park access and connection.

We hope to be able to share plans within the next month. Please contact us if you wish to be notified of our community presentation, or watch for Redevelopment reports… Stay tuned!

ELDERHOUSE SITE UPDATE LAND FUNDRAISING GOAL: $200,000.00

WE ARE 25% of the way there, thanks to many of our friends and neighbours
