The Renewable Revolution:

RAINWATER HARVESTING

What is rainwater harvesting?

The collection + storage of rain water for repurposed use

Why use Rainwater?

A system includes:

Capture

Conveyance

Holding

Distribution

Non-irrigation only systems also include Filtration + Purification

Capture

The capture is the roof of the house

It is the one item that is typically set in stone

The first thing to keep in mind harvesting rainwater is the need to keep debris out of the water system

Conveyance

Getting the water from the roof to the tank is the role of the conveyance system

Gravity + water pressure are the forces that move the water through the

downspouts + pipe to the tank

Holding System

The tanks are the holding system

Polypropylene tanks are the most common + widely available

can either be buried or above ground

These should be sized to meet your water use requirements or you can make a plan to

install another tank in the future

Distribution

The final and sometimes the most complex aspect of the project is

the distribution system

The simplest solution is to allow gravity + water pressure to do the rest

For buried systems: a small submersible pump will do the

trick

Filtration + Purification

A system is intended for drinking water requires a water filtration + purification system

The increase the cost of the system, results in less dependent on outside

provider

You’ll also have the benefit of drinking + using pure

rainwater

As you start your planning:Start by watching your water needs: How much do you use?How are you using it?

Conserve first + start building your system with an eye on the futureWater rates are not going to go down

Rainwater harvesting can be a very strong investment if done wisely
