Designplan has worked closely with those involved with railway systems

for more than thirty years. Early projects included work at Euston & Kings

Cross Stations in London, Glasgow Central in Scotland followed by

extensive locomotive sheds in Wolverton.

In the early 80’s a special fitting was designed, in close co-operation with

British Rail engineers, to meet the special needs posed by the introduction

of single operator trains. The resulting fitting was our ‘Brunel’ and following

its development almost every station on the entire Network S.E. system

was converted to include this fitting under canopies in platform areas.

Those that were not quite suited to ‘Brunel’ were provided with new red

‘Sparta’ instead.

Since then we have worked continually with system operators, engineers

& contractors both in the UK & overseas designing, manufacturing &

supplying high quality, long lasting, value for money solutions to the

problems posed by the Railway environment. Indeed the majority of

fittings mentioned in this section of the catalogue are available with the

Designplan ‘Lifetime Guarantee’ see page 29.

The information that follows will, we believe, assist those working &

designing for this, often hostile, environment and will enable the engineer

or architect to select a suitable fitting that has often been specifically

designed for Railway or similar use.

For simplicity we have selected the different areas of Railway

infrastructure and then have made suggestions as to which Designplan

fitting is best suited to light that given area. There are of course

alternatives that appear within our catalogue, should suggestions within

this guide not answer a particular need.

In the event of a special requirement, as is frequently the case with such

installations, then we are always pleased to work with the designer to

create a Bespoke solution. Recent Bespoke projects include a special

linear fitting for canopy areas for stations in the North East of England.

Details of this service are provided on page 357.

Platforms

Platforms often require special fittings to suit particular site conditions. For

example a unit to fit within a specially constructed ceiling or a fitting

manufactured to ensure that no glare appears on a T.V. screen when

single operator trains are in operation.

We have regularly worked with designers to solve the issues raised by

local conditions & either modified a standard fitting or designed &

manufactured a ‘Bespoke’ solution.

A few examples are off e red on this page however the available

adaptations & designs are endless, simply, what is needed will be provided.

Fittings that are typically used for platforms include:

Parkalux (p148/149), Abrams (p165), Sparta (p146/147), Camasys (p162),

Metro (p144), Recessed Tuscan (p153), Antares (p351) & Deluxe Brunel

In a similar way to our experience of working with those involved in

surface railway networks we have for many years worked closely with

designers & engineers on Underground railway system projects.

Most often with London Underground Staff and their appointed design

consultants & contractor partners, but also extensively with the New York

& Paris Metro & Hong Kong MTR engineers.

Notable projects completed in recent times by Designplan are the

relighting of the entire metro system for the City of Liverpool, the supply of

all lighting for the newly built North End Access, at Grand Central Station,

New York City, a contract worth in excess of $1m & the complete

refurbishment of the following underg round stations in London, Kennington,

Tu ffnell Park, St. John’s Wood, Chalk Farm, Manor House and others.

There are similarities between the lighting requirements for Surface &

Underground systems but there are also differences. Both require

equipment built to last many years that are simple to install & maintain.

Both need fittings that have high IP & IK ratings, weather & strength

properties, and both often require an input of Bespoke design &

manufacture to ensure that the special needs of each are built into the

equipment.

One of the more significant differences is that for many underground

projects glass is preferred for the diffusing material in front of lamps.

Where this is needed we have adapted standard fittings, for example our

Quadrant & Tuscan ranges, to meet this requirement or designed purpose

made fittings with glass diffusers & cable management facilities built in.

In the case of London Underground there is a difference between the

requirements & standards below surface, designated ‘Section 12’ and

above surface, non-section 12.

The information that follows will, we believe, assist those working on &

designing Underground Railway Systems and will enable the engineer or

architect to select a suitable fitting that has often been specifically

designed for this purpose.

Where we have a fitting which has been specifically adapted for use or

designed for Underground Systems we provide the specification within

the following pages, otherwise we refer to the page number referring to

the fitting recommended.

If your project requires a Bespoke solution please refer to page 357.

Station entrance canopies

Fittings re q u i red can be surface, semi-recessed or fully recessed. The

Deluxe Brunel (p201) & Aztec (p199) are available in all three options. The

Tuscan range (p153) most often used in recessed form or if a downlighting

solution is sought the RDL (p208) is a weather & vandal resistant answer.

Station exteriors

Fittings used to light the outsides of station buildings need to be both

weather & vandal resistant.

The following list has been selected with both of these criteria in mind but

also, in a number of cases, with aesthetic appearance playing an

important role. The list provided is extensive reflecting the wide range that

we manufacture offering the selected features mentioned above, most

of which are available with our ‘Lifetime Guarantee’, see page 29.

A number are available in surface, semi-recessed & fully recessed designs.

Pantheon (p205), Capella (p260), Ali Quadgrille (p190/191), Quadgrille

(p194/195), Quay (p232), Maxi Callisto (p256), Vertigo (p252/255), Ziggy

Brunel (p202), Corner Quadrangle (p196), Hood (p245), Brunangle (p204)

& Quadrato (p183).

Emergency Lighting

The majority of fittings mentioned can be provided with self-contained,

central Battery or mains backup emergency & Auto test facilities as

described on pages 313 & 314

In addition we have a number specifically adapted to below surface,

section 12, requirements details of which are provided in the section 12

part of the guide.

Concourse Area & Ticket Halls

This is often a particularly busy part of a station and needs to be well lit.

It is also the area where, at times, designers take the opportunity to

c reate some diff e rences in lighting style, since many other locations,

particularly below surface, tend very much to adopt similar equipment

& aesthetic appearance.

We frequently work with designers to modify existing fittings from our

range or create new ideas for concourse areas.

Where more standard equipment is chosen then versions of Camasys

(p162), Metro (p144), Flair (p143), Mission (p145), Tuscan (p153), often

modified, are installed. Also if recessed downlighting is needed one of our

RDL (p208) range.

Staff areas & offices.

Whilst standard recessed modular fittings (p64) may be suitable or

recessed fittings to suit LG3 or LG7 re q u i rements may be needed, for

example our Sable (p62), there are a number of areas within Underg ro u n d

facilities for which a special fitting to IP21 is pre f e r red. ‘Scipio’ has been

designed in conjunction with London Underg round engineers to meet the

need where it is felt that a limited degree of water ‘seepage’ can occur.

There are two fittings currently available in the ‘Scipio’ range.

Scipio 1: A ‘trough’ reflector type fitting with closed ends to the trough. All

joints are fully welded & the high frequency control gear is mounted

upon the back of the trough. This is then recessed into the body with an

internal flange onto which the trough sits. There is fused plug & socket

connection to the terminal block sited in the back of the body. End

cable entry is provided which should be used with a suitable cable

gland. The back of the body has no piecing in it & the fitting is installed

using external brackets that are welded to the body ends.

The fitting body & reflector are finished white polyester powder coat.

Scipio 2: A recessed modular suitable for 600mm × 600mm square ceiling

grid. The fitting has no holes in the rear, recessed, part that could allow

water in & it is of an all welded construction to seal against water entry.

Louvres are mounted within a perforated front plate that is retained on

wishbone springs. High frequency control gear & lamps are above the

removable section on a demountable tray with a fused plug & socket

connection to a terminal block in the back of the body. 20mm cable

entry is provided adjacent to the terminal block which when used should

be fitted with a suitable cable gland.

Walkways

I n c reasingly lighting combined with cable management facilities are being

utliised. Running services within a single unit saves installation costs, makes

maintenance a more simple task and enables significant improvements in

the overall aesthetic look of an area to be achieved. Working with

customers we have either provided standard answers via, for example,

Camasys (p162), or modified other fittings, Metro (p144), Tuscan (p153) and

others. Where requested purpose built solutions have been designed &

m a n u f a c t u red – see Bespoke manufacture – (p357). Where a walkway is

some distance from the actual station then the risk of damage fro m

vandalism rises and a number of our fittings are well suited to provide years

of trouble free life, each available with our ‘lifetime guarantee’ – p 2 9 .

Toilets

Depending upon the frequency of use, the cleaning and maintenance

regime and the location, toilets & washrooms can be perfectly well lit

with “normal” lighting. However, in some cases, they may need to be

provided with a more robust solution where vandalism is possible.

The following fittings are therefore ideally suited where normal conditions

are expected, Kalico (p77), Mink (p63), Geneva (p36/37) Script (p54).

If damage is a possibility then the following will provide protection, RDL

(p208), Buccaneer (p179 &218), Circo (p220), Quadrant (p192), Quadring

(p220), Aztec (p199), Antares (p351), Recessed Tuscan (p153), Parkalux

(p148/149) or Abrams No-Body (p332).

Stairways

S t a i rcases poorly lit inevitably lead to the possibility of accidents & certainly

give rise to feelings of insecurity, there f o re good lighting is essential usually

with the provision of an emergency facility included. Both Tuscan (p153) &

Rampart (p166), will be suitable for stairways but in addition consideration

may be given to Ali Quad (p188/189), Quadrant (p192) & Quadring (p222).

Whilst there are a significant number of other fittings that would be

suitable for stairways the ones suggested are available for non section 12

with polycarbonate diffusers as well as with matching glass diffusers to

comply with section 12 which will allow the designer to carry through the

same design both above & below surface.

Where fittings are to be installed below surface, London Underground

have attached the designation ‘Section 12’ to which such equipment

must comply. There a number of features that are required in order for

compliance to be achieved the most notable being cable to be of a low

smoke & fume type, all glazing to be glass & paints used must meet strict

requirements called up in standard E1042.

L.E.D. Lighting

L.E.D. lighting is becoming ever more popular as the solution to the

lighting or highlighting of particular areas. We have a standard range of

wall & inground L.E.D. fittings (p107/137) that may be useful for

underground as well as above ground areas. Again, as with all of our

range, special & bespoke (p357) fittings can be provided to meet

specific requirements. Use catalogue number from standard page & add

suffix M8277T for the section 12 adaptations.

Escalators

Escalators often start above surface but all end below & there f o re section

12 type fittings are likely to be re q u i red. RDL (p208), Bastion (p170), Bricklight

(p173) , Centaur LED (110), Topaz (p128), Camasys (p162) & Antares (p351)

The lighting of platforms has many & varied solutions entirely dependent

upon the requirements & ideas of the particular designer or engineer

involved.

Over the past thirty & more years Designplan has worked with engineers

in many countries to provide the ideal answer to the particular challenge

posed by each specific platform to be lit. For this reason it is almost

impossible to give a definitive answer as to what fitting to use for

platforms. For general guidance more often than not a version of either

Camasys (p162), Antares (p315) or Tuscan (p153) are the chosen

products. Invariably the standard fitting is modified to a greater or lesser

degree so that the ideal solution is arrived at. See also our Bespoke

Tuscan (p164) & Bespoke Manufacture (p357).

For guidance & as a starting point a recent platform installation at Manor

House underground station, London, used Camasys cable management

system (p162) . The lighting system incorporates two side “wings” which

hinge to reveal cable ways and allow re-lamping.

The specification included the standard section 12 features as mentioned

at the beginning of this part of the guide, and quick release quarter turn

fasteners for the wings, In addition to this hinging facility each fitting can

be designed to be able to be individually isolated for maintenance &

relamping, another an important factor in platform situations.

The reason for ‘quick’ release is simply that maintenance in underg ro u n d

a reas can only be carried out at very limited times & the faster & easier

it is for the maintenance to be completed the better & more cost

e ffective the work.

In addition a reflector in anocoil aluminium was used to provide maximum

e fficiency. In this case the lamps chosen were 2 × 55wPL. The IP rating,

IP65, to ensure that dust, always an issue in platform areas, was kept out of

the fitting. To assist cleaning a special gloss powder finish was selected.

Platform “Public help” points have been successfully highlighted using our

Maxi Callisto (p398) with either CDMT or compact fluorescent lamps, all

section 12 compliant. This angled fitting lends itself to simple installation

on the tunnel curve to highlight the now numerous “help” points.
