Rack-and-pinion railway – Bhe 4/6 twin railcarwith low-floor design for the Gornergrat railway (GGB)
The GGB began operations as Switzerland’s first electrified rack-and-
pinion railway on 20 August 1898. The route goes from Zermatt (1 604 m)
to the summit of the Gornergrat (3 089 m) into the midst of twenty-nine
four-thousanders with a unique view of the Matterhorn, a vantage point
visited by some 650 000 people a year. The GGB can already transport 2
400 people an hour. Thanks to state-of-the-art drive technology, the new
lightweight vehicles with low-floor entrances, air suspension and a modern
interior design with ideal sound and heat insulation can travel faster,
making operations on the line even more efficient.
