TUNNELS - SWISS ALPSAlocit 28.95 and 28.15 were originally specified for the service
tunnel of the Gornergrat-Bahn, a rack-railway in the Swiss
Alps. Fifteen years later, Alocit products were chosen again
because of their record of durability, outstanding adhesion and
resistance to oil and other corrosive materials.
ALOCIT UNDERGROUND Alocit systems have been successfully used at many tunnel locations: the Sumner Tunnel under Boston Harbour and the Holland Tunnel under the Hudson River in the US, the MRT in Singapore, the Grosser St. Bernard tunnel in the Alps, several train underpasses in Switzerland and the main motorway tunnels between Lubijana and Zagreb in Slovenia.
The pictures show how
dirty, damp and oily
conditions were in the
tunnel and how Alocit
coatings were able to
completely renew the
substrate.
The service tunnel is cut
250 me t r e s i n t o t he
mountainside and is used
for the maintenance of
trains and rolling stock as
well as for the storage of
materials. Its walls and
floors suffer from constant
exposure to moisture, dirt
and oil. Engine oil is
d ra ined d i rec t l y i n to
channels under the tracks
to be carried off to special
oil separators, but no part
of the tunnel escapes from
the contaminating effects
of this damp, subterranean
environment.
Alocit 28.95 was used
as a primer because of its
ability to adhere to oily and
damp substrates, with
28.15 as the finishing coat.
Surface preparation only
required the removal of
loose and flaky material by
w i r e b r u s h . A f t e r
application, in this case by
brush, the Gornergrat-
Bahn was ready for at least
another 20 years hard use.
