In reviewing each of the schedules one finds an extraor- dinary lineup of sessions and concerts. This speaks loudly to the vitality and depth of our organization. When any one of us suc- ceeds, we all succeed and surely these valuable experiences af- ford us all the opportunity to grow and achieve. This is the first of many pleas to you to get your calendars out right now and reserve February 21 to 24, 2001. These are the dates for our first National Convention of the 21 st century. It would be wonderful if we could have our largest turnout ever. All it will take is for each of you to make it a priority. I continue to believe that this biannual exchange is crucial to our continuance as a vi- able organization. Your attendance is essential to our future. I was listening recently to an interview of Pierre Boulez on public radio and was struck by his thoughts about the orchestra of the 21 st century. One of his primary points in this exchange was that “anonymity is the enemy of creativity.” He said that many or- chestral musicians, especially strong players, loose interest in the large orchestra as a sole means of performance. He attributed this to the number of people who are doubling their part and suggested that can lead to the loss of individual commitment and eventually interest (As an aside, when accusations arise about the doubling that bands do, I have often noted that string sections double in far greater numbers). Boulez’s solution for this problem sounded very familiar. He advocated varying the size of the orchestra and changing the as- signments of the musicians so that the players could have varied experiences and be heard as individuals. What we in the wind world have come to call flexible instrumentation and part rota- tion, is beginning to look like a good idea to many orchestras as a way to highlight individuals and create a variety of playing expe- riences. These concepts were pioneered by the wind conductors in the twentieth century. In the first third of the last century, our predecessors spent many long hours arguing the need for standardizing the instrumentation of the band. This was completely necessary at the time and al- lowed the stabilization of a number of scoring concepts. We now find ourselves in a similar position to our colleagues in the or- chestra. I believe the worst thing that we can do is to protect and project a single instrumentation for our medium. Flexibility is the key to our future as a viable ensemble, just as it is for the orches- tra. We have to be careful about arguing for fixed, instrumenta- tion small bands and calling them Wind Ensembles or arguing for fixed instrumentation large bands and calling them Symphonic Bands. The whole process of programming involves the art of knowing: (1) who you are playing for, (2) what is available to play, (3) where you are performing, and (4) how to instrument the repertoire so that it sounds best and meets the composer’s needs. Programming should always project what you believe in. It is easy to program if you are willing to sell out the group. If your pro- gram is to be educationally viable and aesthetically pleasing then you must sit down and think for a while. Of course, rotation goes hand in hand with empowering individuals. The more diverse the musicers playing experience is, the more they assume ownership in the ensemble. Designing the correct instrumentation to accom- modate all of the above has become an integral part of what we do and an art in itself. Flexible instrumentation is all about individu- alized education. Once people can participate and contribute as individuals, anonymity disappears. The act of highlighting indi- viduality allows creativity to appear. Diversity allows credibility as well as accountability to materialize. I would like to share one other thought. At the Southwestern Division meeting, Frank Battisti gave a moving presentation that most agreed was worth the trip to the conference, even if you had heard nothing else. Frank put two questions to us that stopped us in our tracks. “ What do you dream of doing everyday and what do you do everyday?” He then said, “ When what you do every- day is what you dream of doing, then you are truly living your life. At that moment, work becomes play.” For all of us who spend way too many hours away from what we dream of doing, it was a wake-up call to re-prioritize our time so that our lives might go by the way we want them to rather than the way that they have to. I hope that you are all experiencing a musical and productive spring. May you find a way to do the things you dream of doing! Sincerely,

Accumulations was commissioned by the Brass Band of Co-lumbus, Paul Droste, director and premiered in February, 2000.The transcription for wind ensemble, completed in December of1999, was written for the Drake University Wind Symphony. Thetitle of the work reflects the predominant compositional strategy:textures that emerge through a process of motivic accretion. Thepiece is marked by an intense rhythmic drive and octatonic har-monic language.

American Interlude was commissioned by the Michigan StateUniversity Wind Symphony and completed in December of 1999.It comes two years after the first of the composer’s ventures inthis medium, Variations on a Theme of Benjamin Britten. Of thenew work, the composer writes:

“American Interlude is not a programmatic work, despite itstitle. In fact, the title was nearly an afterthought—or mid-thought,as it turned out—chosen at a point in the piece where I found

myself hearing a kind of quidlobet of very famous American songs.It is perhaps ironic that the quotations are not meant to be appre-hended, despite the fact that each is played rather loudly on brassinstruments! In my earlier work, Variations on a Theme of Ben-jamin Britten, I moved across a wide range of expressions, withmany contrasting tempos and moods. In this piece, however, Isought to explore a simpler sort of expression, often in an under-stated manner, and exclusively in slow, solemn tempos.”

Vortex, a new work for piano, winds and percussion by DanaWilson is the second in a series of Consortium Commissions by theBand Directors of the Southeastern Conference. Dana Wilson writes:

“A vortex is a whiling mass, such as a tornado or whirlpool,which is created when a source of momentum causes a thick layerof unstable stratification to move with ever stronger tangentialvelocity as the medium (air or water) converges into a smallerradius. The vortex gradually gains power and momentum while,ironically, forming a vacuum at its center. It is this image of oppo-sites “one influenced by the other” that was the genesis of thispiece. The piece alternates between moments of extreme stasisand whirling energy. While the work is not a concerto, the pianooften serves as the source of momentum, with the ensemble—static at first—gradually pulled into the vortex.”

OTHER RECENT PREMIERESMark Camphouse’s Pacific Commemoration was given its world

premiere performance by the Pacific University Wind Ensembleon December 7, 1999 under the direction of Michael Burch-Pesses. Commissioned by Pacific University to celebrate its ses-quicentennial anniversary, Pacific Commemoration, a grade 4work, has been accepted for publication by TRN Music PublisherInc.

Mr. Camphouse offers the following program information forhis new work:

“As a life long student of American history, and as a professorin academe for 22 years, I have found the story of Pacific Univer-sity to be an especially fascinating one. Its spirited 150-year his-tory can indeed be aptly described as one of ‘splendid audacity.’

While it would have been very tempting to compose a largescale, multi-movement work based on the visionary leadership ofpacific’s enduring founders, the commission stipulated that thework be 7 to 8 minutes in length—not nearly sufficient durationfor a musical tribute to those truly distinguished individuals.

Initial sketching of this sonorous and challenging work beganshortly after a brief, February 1999 visit to Forest Grove. In con-ceiving Pacific Commemoration, I thought it appropriate to focuson three broad and very important themes, which commemoratethe past, primarily by way of a sturdy, originally composed hymnwhich pays tribute to Pacific’s congregationalist founders whoemphasized service to the community; reflect the beauty of thePacific University campus and surrounding region; celebrate whatpromises to be an exciting and increasingly vibrant future for theentire Pacific University community.

Gabelnick’s astute remarks made during a 1997 address to theUniversity community:

I am grateful for the opportunity to share my sense of musicaljoy and celebration with the entire Pacific University communityon the occasion of the 150th anniversary of its founding.”

BANDANNA: What Now?by Daron Hagen (for the CBDNA Report)

Bandanna, the opera in two acts and a prologue for six princi-pal singers, chorus of thirty, onstage mariachi band, and wind or-chestra in the pit, was premiered in February of 1999 at theCBDNA National Convention. The University of Texas OperaTheater, conducted by Michael Haithcock, presented the work asstaged by Robert DeSimone. The largest piece ever commissionedby the CBDNA, the process of taking Bandanna from “first con-tact” with the composer through contract, treatment, composition,rehearsal, and staged maiden voyage, took nearly two years. Thelarge consortium of universities that came together to finance theproject have a right to know what kind of life the piece that theycommissioned is having.

As composer of the opera and recipient of the commission, Ihave made every effort to make the project as useful and viable aspossible to the many academic institutions that commissioned it,without in any way compromising the work itself. MichaelHaithcock has been a forceful and persuasive guide for me in thiseffort. Each commissioner received from my publisher Carl Fischera score and set of parts for two band works: Bandanna Overture,and Wedding Dances from Bandanna. I hear only secondhandabout performances of them, so my information about the utilityof these pieces is limited. They were included on the Texas StateUniversity Interscholastic League band contest list, which guar-anteed some sales for Carl Fischer of the new issues of the worksthat they were able to bring out as a gesture of support for theproject as a whole. I hear every week or so about a new perfor-mance somewhere — this is deeply gratifying news. These per-formances keep the piece alive in people’s hearts.

New derived concert works. Since the premiere, I have com-posed a new concert aria for soprano and wind ensemble calledPrelude and Prayer from Bandanna which includes a freshly-com-posed fantasy on several themes from the opera followed by a re-orchestration for full wind ensemble of the climactic aria that, inthe opera, was accompanied only by three onstage violins. I com-posed this new piece for those members of the commissioningconsortium who were critical of my omission (for dramatic rea-sons) of the pit ensemble from that aria in the fully-staged opera.

Recordings. Michael Haithcock has recorded the BandannaOverture, Prelude and Prayer from Bandanna (with soprano LyndaKeith McKnight), and also the free-standing Seduction Scene fromBandanna (with baritone Paul Kreider) with the Baylor WindEnsemble for release on Arsis Records in the Spring. In addition,Eugene Corporan has recorded the Wedding Dances from Ban-danna with the North Texas Wind Symphony for Klavier Records.

The first complete recording of the opera. I am also happy to

report that the first complete cast recording (for Arsis Records) ofthe opera is scheduled to take place at the University of NevadaLas Vegas in February of 2000. Kudos and sincere thanks must goto Paul Kreider, both for committing the resources of the Universityof Nevada Las Vegas School of Music to the project and for prepar-ing the demanding chorus parts, Tom Leslie, the Director of Bands atUNLV, for preparing the wind orchestra, and Robert Schuneman,president of Arsis Records, for committing his label to the project.

Revisions to the staged work. The piano vocal score of theopera will be new-issued by Carl Fischer during 2001. Feedbackfrom college-level stage directors has led me to supply ossias forthe more vocally-demanding portions of every major role so thatthe piece will have greater viability when sung by younger, less-developed singers. I am also supplying simplified choral ossias.The vocal writing is difficult, cutting-edge, and requires singersof a definite “sensibility” to put across. This is one of the opera’sstrengths as a piece of music: it pushes forward the art of Ameri-can opera singing through making sensible new demands on thesingers. The piece was written for the professional stage; I remainproud of and grateful for the way the students at the University ofTexas rose to the occasion.

However, the vocal limitations of the students who were as-signed the very demanding principal roles rendered the archivaltape of limited use in promoting the piece to professional compa-nies who, in the end, only “hear what they hear.” I am delighted toreport that we have assembled a world-class cast of principals forthe February cast recording — all veterans of the professionaloperatic stage: Mark Thomsen, who created the role of Dorian inlast season’s Lowell Liebermann opera Dorian Gray in Europeand in the US, has agreed to sing Morales; Paul Kreider will re-prise his bravura portrayal of Kane; James Demler, who has cre-ated several roles in Hagen / Muldoon operas in the past, will singJake; Darynn Zimmer, a stunning young rising soprano will singMona. I will conduct.

Revivals of the opera. Carl Fischer is discussing the Europeanpremiere with presenters in both Italy and Germany. The ten ma-jor American professional opera companies have all been madeaware of the opera’s readiness for premiere at the professionallevel. The fact that there are no strings in the pit remains an ob-stacle. The availability of the cast album will make it much easierfor Carl Fischer to promote the piece and for young singers at thecollegiate level to learn the roles themselves.

I can’t thank the CBDNA enough for the wonderful supportthey have shown these past several years. As a result of theseexperiences, I have become a committed advocate of the creationby our country’s most gifted contemporary composers of impor-tant new world-class repertoire pieces for the wind ensemble, windorchestra, symphonic band, and band.

Music that isn’t heard doesn’t exist. I can definitely report thatthe success of Bandanna, nay, the mere fact that it was commis-sioned at all — the support that composers perceive is there in theband world because of such a commission — has sent a strongmessage to American composers. In an industry and art form thatoften seems to be dashing for the margins, composing excellentmusic for band is a practical way for composers of every age andaccomplishment to fight for relevance and viability. The messageis simple: if you write for band, it will get played. That’s music toa composer’s ears.

all-time attendance record during their di-visional conference, February 24-26 at theUniversity of North Carolina at Greens-boro with 84 paid attendees.

Donald DeRoche, Director of Bands atDePaul University, has been elected to theoffice of vice president of the North Cen-tral Division of CBDNA. He will finish outthe term (1999-2001) which was left va-cant when Paula Holcombe took a new po-sition outside of the division.

During the week of January 23, 2000 thePortland, Maine Concert Association spon-sored a conductor residency with JohnBoyd, Director of Bands at Indiana StateUniversity.

The University of Southern Mainehosted Artist-In-Residence DanielPinkham and presented a concert ofPinkham’s music on Thursday March 2,2000 with the University Chamber Sing-ers, University Orchestra and UniversityWind Ensemble. The USM Concert Bandand Chamber Singers Spring touredthroughout Vermont March 22-24, 2000.

The University of New Hampshire re-cently premiered a commissioned work bycomposer Paul Dickinson of the Univer-sity of Central Arkansas.

Plymouth State College recently re-ceived an anonymous donation of $50,000for the purchase of new wind and percus-sion instruments.

In November, the Plymouth State Col-lege Symphonic Band, Gary Corcoran,conductor, hosted its annual All-New En-gland Band Festival. Guest conductorsJack Stamp (Indiana University of Penn-sylvania) and Robert Foster (Universityof Kansas) conducted festival bands total-ing 173 participants representing 60 highschools from all six New England states.Clinicians for Plymouth State’s New En-gland Band Directors Institute includedGary Hill (Arizona State University),Robert Sheldon (East Peoria HighSchool), Deborah Sheldon (University ofIllinois), Curvin G. Farnham (Universityof Maine) and several other clinicians fromthroughout the New England area. The 3-day institute includes upwards of 100 par-ticipants annually.

The National Council of Kappa KappaPsi has created a Matching Funds/GrantProgram to provide financial support forguest conductors and performing artistswith college/university concert bands.These matching funds from the NationalChapter of Kappa Kappa Psi have beendesignated to promulgate the “mission” ofKappa Kappa Psi promoting the advance-ment of college and university bandsthrough dedicated service and support tobands; comprehensive education; leader-ship opportunities; and recognition; for thebenefit of its members and society.

This Kappa Kappa Psi Matching Funds/Grant Program is an open process wherebyall college and/or university band directorsare invited to submit grant proposals thatfulfill the guidelines and purposes of thegrant. Grants will be up to $500.00 andpaid to the institution upon completion ofthe program and submitting the final re-port. The guidelines and principles for thisfunding were initiated to recognize the sig-nificance of providing guest conductorsand performing artists to work with ourconcert bands. These opportunities serveto enrich, inspire and enhance our collegeband members experience. These memo-rable events in turn provide the public au-dience with special musical experiences.

The Matching Funds/Grant Program ofKappa Kappa Psi has three fundamentalprinciples:

1. The funded project will include at leastone public performance by one or more ofthe college/university concert bands fea-turing the guest conductor(s) and/or per-forming artist(s).

2. The funded project will be studentcentered with a clear focus to the improve-ment of teaching and learning throughworkshops, master classes and/or clinicsprovided by the guest conductor(s) and/orperforming artist(s).

3. The funded project will clearly dem-onstrate the standard of excellence andmusical achievements of the guestconductor(s) and/or performing artist(s).

The Virginia chapter of CBDNA heldits twenty-fifth annual Symposium forNew Band Music on February 10-12, 2000,at the University of Richmond. GeneAnderson of the University of Richmondwas the host for the event. Five compos-ers from around the country conductedtheir own works in open rehearsals withthe Virginia Intercollegiate Band, a 60member ensemble made up of studentsfrom seven Virginia colleges and univer-sities.

Composers and their works included:Warren Barker (Greenville, SC) - Concertofor Clarinet and Band; Sue Dellinger (In-diana State Univ.) – Watercolors; PaulDickinson (Central Arkansas Univ.) - Sym-phony for Wind Ensemble; Art Gottschalk(Rice Univ.) - Ut Queant Laxis; Rob Smith(Univ. of Houston) – Whirl.

Frank Battisti has been appointed con-ductor of the Boston UniversityTanglewood Institute Wind Ensemble forthe Summer 2000 Tanglewood season.This is the first ever sustained wind en-semble activity to take place atTanglewood. Frank will also be in resi-dence with the U.S. Marine Band in Wash-ington, D.C. from April 11-16 with a con-cert on April 16. Last March, the NewEngland College Band Association pre-sented Frank with their Lifetime Achieve-ment Award for “commitment and dedica-tion to the creation, promotion and perfor-mance of original as well as traditionalband literature.”

S. O. S. Band Music DesperatelyNeeded!

On October 29, 1998 Honduras was rav-aged by Hurricane Mitch. No doubt youhave seen newsclips of the devastation herein Tegucigalpa when much of the capitolcity was flooded and tens of thousands ofhomes were lost. Located on the banks ofthe Choloteca River in Tegucigalpa was asmall state owned building which was therehearsal hall of the more than 100 yearold Honduran National Band, known as LaBanda de los Supremos Poderes . Withoutwarning the river overflowed its banks ina flashflood during the hurricane andwashed most of the building away and allits contents, including the library of theNational Band, all instruments, and allstands, furniture and equipment.

self. Some of the members lost their homesin the hurricane and the band is trying tomake sure that the bandsmen do not endup losing their jobs. The band has been afully professional group supported by theHonduran government which is now nearlybankrupt. Nonetheless, the band is deter-mined to continue!! The members and thegovernment alike have scrounged aroundand borrowed instruments, solicited dona-tions, and are in the process of securing apartial set of new instruments from Japan.The band is far from being on its feet, butthey could begin playing again as soon assome music can be found!

The band works as a concert wind en-semble, as a marching band, as a ceremo-nial unit for all government functions (suchas state funerals), as a jazz ensemble or assalsa band, depending on the occasion.Charts and music of all styles and typesare wanted. Joaquin Rodrigo was born on StCecilia’s day, 22nd November, 1901. As aresult of an epidemic of diptheria, he be-came blind at the age of three.

He wrote:“I believe my blindness gave me more

insight with the inner world, the world inwhich we the blind live. While sitting onthis wicker chair I am thinking that the ill-ness, the loss of vision, was the vehicle thattook me down the road to music. I havemore auditory memories than visualmemories, I remember the song of thecrickets, of the cicada, the pounding of thewaves, the sound of organ and church bellsin my hometown.”

He studied in Paris from 1927, a studentof Dukas, and good friends with Falla,Honneger, Milhaud, Ravel and many oth-ers. He was abroad during the SpanishCivil War, but returned in 1939. In 1940,the world premiere of his Concierto deAranjuez was given, a masterpiece whichhas overshadowed his many other worksfor solo instrument, voice, guitar, piano andin other forms.

His major work for winds is the Adagiofor Wind Instruments, written for theAmerican Wind Symphony and its conduc-tor, Robert Boudreau in 1966. An atmo-spheric beginning, with solo flute, eruptsinto a violent middle section, before thework returns to the elegiac mood of thestart. It is scored for orchestral wind, brassand percussion: 3332:4331:T 3P.

Solving the Problems of the Small College Band

CBDNA invites members working in small college band situations to share their experience and expertise in sessions devotedexclusively to positive solutions for everyday problems commonly found in the small college environment. If you are inter-ested in sharing your success with others, identify a former negative you have turned into a current positive and briefly describehow you did it. Include this information with your name, school, and years of experience in a one page proposal. Send yourproposal to: Eugene M. “Chosen Gems” Conducting Opportunities

The Denton conference program will once again include a session on “Chosen Gems” and all CBDNA members are encour-aged to submit a proposal for repertoire to be included in this session. 1999 YOUNG BAND COMPOSITION CONTEST $10,000 FIRST PRIZE WINNER ANNOUNCED

Walls of Zion by Greg Danner has been selected as the 1999winner of the CBDNA Young Band Composition Contest.

Dr. Greg Danner is professor of theory/composition in the De-partment of Music and Art at Tennessee Technological Univer-sity. He holds degrees from Southeast Missouri State University,Eastman School of Music and Washington University. He has re-ceived annual ASCAP composition awards since 1989, as well asthe Louisiana State MTNA composer Commission Award. He haswon composition contests sponsored by the Taghkanic Choraleand Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity. He has received commis-sions for compositions from the International Brass Festival, NewYork Brass Conference, International Trumpet Guild, Collegemusic Society, National Flute Association, and CBDNA. He wasa resident composer at the Charles Ives Center for American Mu-sic and has served as a consultant in the Kennedy Center for the

CBDNA is proud of its commitment to the creation of outstand-ing wind band works for young musicians. The Young Band Com-position Contest is a prestigious competition that encourages out-standing composers to write for young band. The second bian-nual contest will be held in 2001. Formationsby Morton Gould

After a rather long respite, this columnof gems returns. Morton Gould providedthe band world a wonderful collection ofworks for winds and percussion. His For-mations, written for marching band, is adelightful pastiche of "toe-tappers" andtuneful contrasts. As with other of Gould's"novelty" works and arrangements, like the"Holiday Music," one can denote a certainmeasure of sarcasm or "tongue-in-cheek"sounds in some of the movements of For-mations. Gould provides suggested forma-tions and movements as well as a descrip-tive usage for "flip folders." The work wasactually commissioned by Richard Bowlesand the "Gator Band" at the University ofFlorida and was published in 1964 by G&CMusic Corporation with Chappell & Co.,Inc. as the sole selling agent by 1965.

The work exists is six movements, ofwhich, one can program all or parts of thecomposition. Most of the movements callon trumpets to perform fanfare-like pas-sages, some of which requiring multipletonguing from the entire section. Actually,the brasses are divided into sections A andB for exciting antiphonal effects if stagedappropriately. The technical demands inthe score are quite reminiscent of Gould'sSymphony for Band, Santa Fe Saga andJericho Rhapsody. The movements areaptly named to represent the varioussounds created by the composer. "MarchOn," "Rally," "Twirling Blues," "Strut,"Slink," "Waltzing Alumni," Alma Mater,"and "March Off" offer players and audi-ences a refreshing contrast with an elementof nostalgia.

We performed the work on a ChamberWinds and Percussion program and, in-stead of a marching band or even full sym-phonic band instrumentation, we used oneon each part except for double on Bb clari-net parts. The humor found in the musicwas not initially well liked by the playerswho considered the sounds in the work

But nearing the perfor-mance, most players began to appreciatethe composition, especially some of FredMills' trumpet students who became appre-ciative of the music and the technical de-mands. This work provided a refreshingmusical experience and was well received.One recording worth mention is a 1995Delos International, Inc. recording with theSeattle Symphony players and GerardSchwarz conducting. The CD is entitledThe Music of Morton Gould. So muchmusic yet so little time. Enjoy!

20 - UPCOMING CBDNA COMMISSIONSDear Colleagues,

Following the tradition of past years, each of us once again hasan opportunity to become a partner in one of CBDNA’s most es-sential missions: the commissioning of significant composers towrite for the wind band. After perusing this note, I hope you agreethat this biennium’s projects, determined in large part by last year’smembership survey, are well-worth investing in!

CBDNA members that participated in last year’s National Com-missioning Committee survey offered many terrific suggestionsregarding future commissions. Of these, three ideas were consis-tently articulated by a majority of survey participants. First,CBDNA must continue to initiate consortia, helping advance thecause of great literature for wind bands. Second, CBDNA shouldinvite a noted composer to write for wind band and a soloist. Third,CBDNA’s decisions encompassing national commissioningprojects should reflect greater sensitivity to the limits (e.g., tech-nical facility and instrumentation) encountered within ensemblesconducted by a majority of CBDNA’s members.

After careful consideration of these points, the CBDNA Na-tional Commissioning Committee invited two composers to con-tribute to our ever-burgeoning repertoire. Both Pulitzer winner,George Walker, and internationally-known composer, Dan Welcherhave agreed to write a work for band; these pieces will receivepremiere performances at our next national conference in Denton,Texas, February 2001.

Dan Welcher needs little introduction to band conductors.Among his numerous works for band, Ostwald Award-winningZion and Symphony No. 3 have become staples in the repertoirefrom the last decade. Welcher has written for virtually every mu-sical medium, has garnered numerous awards—Guggenheim,NEA, ASCAP, and Meet the Composer, to name a few—and hasreceived commissions from many orchestras including Chicago,St. Louis, Dallas and the Boston Pops. Welcher has agreed to compose a work “specifically conceivedand crafted to be accessible to the vast majority of college anduniversity bands.” Instrumentation, range of the parts, and tech-nical demands will be modest.

George Walker was recently elected into membership of TheAmerican Academy of Arts and Letters. He was awarded thePulitzer Prize for his 1996 commission from the Boston Sym-phony, Lilacs, for voice and orchestra. Walker’s numerous orches-tral works have been played and recorded by many of the world’smajor orchestras. A graduate of Oberlin, Curtis, and Eastman, heserved on the faculties of Smith College, the University of Colo-rado, Peabody Conservatory, the University of Delaware, and asDistinguished Professor at Rutgers. Walker has accepted our invitation to compose a piece for windband and voice soloist, noting that “this comes at a wonderfultime because I am at a place in life where I am ready to createsomething very special.” The work will likely be ten-fifteen min-utes in length and will probably comprise wind orchestra instru-mentation.

Those wishing to become consortium members shouldmake note of the following:

1. CBDNA’s commitment to the Welcher commission totals$23,000, including all copying costs.

2. CBDNA’s commitment to the Walker commission totals amaximum of $25,000 (the exact amount determined by the finallength of the piece and copying costs).

3. The contributor’s scale for the Welcher project has been setslightly lower than that of the Walker project, more readily allow-ing programs with smaller budgets to become partners.

4. The financial parameters of the Welcher commission are asfollows-

•for $250, the name of the ensemble and conductor will be in-cluded in the score;

•with a $500 contribution, a set of parts will be added to thepreceding;

•$750 will include all of the above plus a composer-autographedscore.

5. The financial parameters of the Walker commission are asfollows-

•for $500, the name of the ensemble and conductor will be in-cluded in the score;

•with a $1,000 contribution, a set of parts will be added to thepreceding;

•$1500 will include all of the above plus a composer-autographed score.

Design and distribution of the survey:

1. Jim Croft and I jointly designed the chamber winds survey/questionnaire last fall (1998) by e-mail.

2. I then e-mailed the survey to around 150 addresses providedby CBDNA with good results.

3. Jim Croft distributed the survey at the CBDNA meeting inChicago (Mid-West Clinic) in December 1998. Again, the responsewas good.

4. Finally, at my request, Doug Stotter agreed to publish thesurvey in the March ’99 issue of REPORT; and Leon Bly agreedto publish the survey in the March ’99 issue of the WASBE News-letter. Both of these efforts were fruitful. In fact, I was still gettingWASBE replies by mail, fax, and e-mail right up to the time I leftfor California to attend the WASBE conference.

Additional comments:

Some USA College Wind Band Conductors are also membersof WASBE. Hence, the dichotomy-WASBE or CBDNA member-is not always specific.

WASBE has high school band directors as members. Surpris-ingly, some of these people returned the survey and indicated thatthey regularly played chamber wind music.

Some surveys were completed by WASBE members who areindependent musicians/conductors and do not regularly conducta performing ensemble.

Finally, the credit question did not apply to many foreign con-ductors who work with amateur or profession groups. Hence, theindication N/A (not applicable) on the survey report.
