ACD of that repertoire session is available from Mark Custom Recording, Inc.,Phone: (716)759-2600, [email protected]. Speaking of bandrepertoire, at Midwest last December I dropped by the Mark Custom Recordingbooth, and discovered that they are producing a great new series of CD's pricedat only $5.00 US each. The reasonable price is because there are no programnotes, artwork, or even a jewel case; just a CD with a listing of the piecesperformed. Each of the five CD's (with five more planned) containsperformances by the Rutgers Symphony Band of classic and newer grade 1, 2and 3 concert band repertoire. These are a great complement to the TeachingMusic Through Performance in Band CD's as they do not duplicate therepertoire in that series. If you have groups playing repertoire at those levels, invest in these CD's. If you're looking for some different repertoire, considerthe pieces on the list on this page.

Have a great conclusion to the school year, everyone, and best wishes forsatisfying and successful concerts in the coming months…

Dennis Tupman Receives First EverOBA Honourary Lifetime Membership

Denn i s Tupman has beenpreviously recognized by the BCMEA andthe CMEA for his invaluable work to musiceducation at all levels. His career has takenhim into classrooms of students of all ages, from primary to university, to teachers andother lifelong learners.

At the conclusion of the recentOBA Concert Band Festival, at which Mr.Tupman was an adjudicator, he was invitedto give the keynote address at the Directors’Social. His speech, both humourous andmoving, reminded everyone in the room thatour job goes beyond the technique andbeyond the endless codified expectations. He said that music is about “spirit, soul, andcommunity”, and that music helps us reachout to others at the same time it helps usreach into ourselves.

Anecdotes about his early teachingcareer and his success with students in spiteof having no budget and no allocated time toteach music brought our own challenges intoperspective.

After the audience recognized hisinspirational speech with a standing ovation,OBA President Dennis Beck made apresentation recognizing Dennis Tupman’scontribution to the formation of the OBA.

It was Dennis Tupman’s commentsand insight at that first gathering that gavethe attendees the incentive to prepare thegroundwork of what would become theOBA. Two years later, the OBA runs thelargest non-competitive band festival in theprovince, organizes the Provincial HonourBand, and will soon be planning conductingsymposia to further the professional

development of wind conductors across theprovince. So much progress in a short time, and Mr. Tupman’s role in this success wasacknowledged when he received the OBA’sfirst-ever Lifetime Membership fromPresident Beck.

When the end of August rolls around and anew school year is on the horizon, it seemslike time accelerates. Before you know it,

you're full speed into the year. So, just like attemptinga new piece, approaching a new school year requiresplanning. Creating and maintaining a structure foryour school's performing ensembles is essential toachieving a rewarding year for you and your students.

The following are examples of what works (usually)for me with my Wind Symphony and are merelysuggestions, so take them or leave as you please.

The large ensembles atAgincourt C.I. meet only once aweek, so planning and communication are extremelyimportant. I like to lay out the season as a series ofperformances. At the first or second rehearsal, I insistthat the students have their planners with them (Iassume that all schools give these out as part of theStudent Activity Fee) and I give them all of the majorperformance dates for the year: Commencement,Remembrance Day, Christmas Concert, FestivalPerformances (OBA Concert Band Festival, Kiwanis, etc.), Performance Tour, and Spring Concerts. Sincethe ensemble is run as a repertoire course, I hand out aschedule for evaluation periods as well.

I try to have different programs for each of theseperformances as well, with the exception ofCommencement and Remembrance Day. Becausethey are so close together, these programs are generallythe same. I like to have as much music in the folder aspossible at the beginning of the year (at least half ayear's worth) and then I inform the students whichmusic will be performed when. This helps the studentsto keep looking forward and hopefully they will try toprepare in advance for any of the more challengingselections.

Being a good member of an ensemble encompassesseveral things. You must arrive at rehearsal on timeand prepared. Since we rehearse on Monday evenings, students will occasionally try to take advantage of mygood nature by arriving "a little" late. Well, as we allknow, you are either late or you're not! At first, Ithought that appealing to their sense of responsibility toand letting the late comers know how disruptive their

P LANNING AND C OMMUNICATION

R EPERTOIRE

M USICIAN C ITIZENSHIP

behaviour was, would fix the problem. NOPE! To curethis seemingly incurable problem, I have borrowed anidea from Bill Thomas, Head of Music at MarkhamDistrict H.S. Anyone who arrives late now gets theopportunity to help out their fellow musicians bycleaning up at the end of the night. This seems to havecured the punctuality issue. If everyone is on time, theneveryone pitches in and clean up takes no time at all.

"We're all in this together". This is what I would like allof my students to "buy into". We share ownership ofalmost everything: rehearsal time, repertoirepreparation, set-up and clean up, etc. Senior studentsare responsible for running sectional rehearsals andconsult with me regularly on what they want to rehearse. If I have something specific for them to work on, I try toget those passages to them with plenty of time to plantheir time. The leadership development involved in thisprocess is invaluable to the growth and success of theensemble.

In any case, plan ahead, communicate, and try to keepthe goals of the ensemble in yours and your students'"mind's eye".

Dear Colleagues:

The Ontario Band Association continues to grow and thrivebecause of the participation of our members, the dedication of ourboard of directors, and the support from our partners in the musicindustry. We have certainly come a long way since our formation inthe fall and winter of 2000/2001. Without all of us workingtogether, none of our achievements in this short time would havebeen possible.

Because of the dedication and commitment of our board ofdirectors, we have had a very successful year. We enjoyed thetalents and successes of our second annual Ontario ProvincialHonour Band performing at the OMEA conference in Huntsville.Conducted by Dr. Glenn Price, and directed by Jeff Wrigglesworth, this OBA program serves to highlight the excellence of the bandprograms in our province. Our second OBA Concert Band Festivaltook place in February, and with 125 bands participating and a longwaiting list, was even bigger and better than last year's. We areindebted to the vision and energy of Mark Caswell who hasdedicated his efforts to providing the best festival performanceexperience possible for Ontario concert bands. On the concludingevening of the festival, at the directors' social, the OBA honouredDennis Tupman with a plaque making him our first honourarylifetime member. This was in recognition of the fact that it wasDennis who inspired a group of band directors in late 2000 to jointogether to form the OBA.

Other exciting developments occurred during the past year. KarenMcAdam joined our board and took on a portfolio, successfullystarting a mentorship program for young band directors. We werevisited by Don Harris of the University of Saskatchewan inSeptember to provide us with an overview of the national voluntarycurriculum standards for band. The Durham Beginning Band

Symposium and the Unionville Wind Conductors' Symposiumwere both well attended and very successful, and brought to ourprovince Donald Hunsberger, Richard Floyd, and MargueriteWilder. We welcomed James Klodnicki to our board in the positionof treasurer, succeeding Andy Barber. We are pleased that AndriaCoulson has so capably taken on a Position of Responsibility, becoming our new membership secretary this past year.

At today's AGM, elections will be held for the positions of VicePresident, Treasurer, and four board positions. We welcome thosereturning and new members to our board. In the fall of 2004, wewill hold another AGM, in order to harmonize our AGM schedulewith other provincial organizations, such as the OMEA, that meetin the fall of each year. At that time, we will hold elections for theremaining executive and board positions in order to complete thetransition to our new schedule.

I welcome our members to this annual meeting, and hope that youwill take the time to read the following reports form each of ourDirectors and members with Positions of Responsibility. It hasbeen an exciting year full of accomplishments for our association, and the future looks bright. I am truly honoured to be working withsuch a supportive, friendly, and thoroughly professional group offriends and colleagues on our board. We have had a lot of fun instarting up this organization, and we are seeing the rewards of ourefforts as we continue to grow and serve the band directors ofOntario. Thank you all for all that you do…it is a pleasure to be apart of this organization.

Sincerely,

Dennis Beck,OBAPresident

As the president of the OBA this past year, I have presided at all of

our meetings, organized and coordinated the activities of the

Board, did my best to ensure that the OBA holds firm to our stated

purpose, goals and objectives, and represented the OBA in the

community. As well as the duties of president, I am also responsible

for university liaison. In that regard, I gave presentations in

February of 2003 to music education students at Queens'

University, as well as supplied materials for a presentation to

students of the University of Toronto.Aconflict in dates postponed

my visit to Wilfrid Laurier University this year. In my role as

president over the past year, I fulfilled my duties in the organization

through the following activities: I assisted and supported the

activities of various board members and OBA projects through

individual meetings and conversations, wrote many letters to

support our various activities, and represented the OBA at the

national board meetings of the Canadian Band Association in

November. I represented the OBA at the following conferences:

OMEA Conference in Huntsville, the Midwest Clinic in Chicago,

Board Insurance

* Option 1

I researched other similar NFP Arts Groups' policies regardingboard insurance and special event insurance. Events conducted bythe OBA vary from events for music educators, educators andstudents and events for students alone under OBA's directsupervision. OBA's board members and individual members whoundertake projects may be subject to legal or criminal liabilityshould an individual attending one of our events be injured orotherwise harmed. It is in the best interest and practice for the OBABoard investigate and secure appropriate coverage for itsmembership.

At this point there are several options to consider, some which arefairly straight ahead and others that will require some reflectionand consideration by the board.

o Work towards affiliation with CBA National Body which offersblanket protection for affiliated boards and associations

o Cost of Board insurance is $400/year which to my understandingwould cover any and all activities we are currently undertakingincluding the Provincial Honour Band.

o This would represent an increase in the cost of membership as perDennis Beck's report at the January meeting. There are howeverother significant member benefits that would be added such asaccess to CBAprograms and publications

the World Association of Symphonic Bands & Ensembles

conference in Jonkopping, Sweden, at a meeting with Icelandic

band directors in Reykjavik, and informally with band directors in

Clonmel, Ireland. I coordinated the preparation of the annual report

you are now reading. I introduced the first draft of a Policy &

Procedure document for our association, which we will refine in

the coming months. This will allow us to streamline and clarify our

duties, and allow us to work more efficiently. This supports the first

of the two goals I set myself for our organization during my tenure:

“to define the organizational structure of the OBA more clearly”

(Sept. 13, 2003). Secondly, I will continue to work on the second

goal, which was to see the OBA membership grow to more

accurately reflect the community of band directors in the province

of Ontario. With everyone's assistance, we will see this happen.

Respectfully submitted,Dennis Beck

* Option 2

Canadian Music Industry Education Committee

o Secure 3rd party liability insurance. There are very few brokerswho specialize in this type of insurance product and even fewerinsurance underwriters who are willing to offer this type of policyfor less than $10,000 in premiums

o One quote obtained was approximately $4500 for $2 Million inliability coverage

Based upon these options, it is my personal opinion that the CBAoption may offer the best return of investment for our membership. If we go with option 2, we will have to either increase membershipdues or user fees at events to cover the premium with little or noadditional benefits to the membership. If we go with option 1, wecan either raise membership dues or build in the additional costs touser fees for events and offer an insured board as well as access toall programs and publications of the CBANational Body.

The past year with the Ontario Music Educator's Association has

been a busy one. Our annual conference at the Deerhurst Resort

and Conference Centre was a huge success. The conference in

2004 ("Forte '04"), will be held in Toronto at the Courtyard

International Plaza Hotel. We plan to return to Deerhurst in 2005.

This year also marks the beginning of a new initiative from the

OMEA...a scholarship for music leadership. This annual award

will be presented to a graduating high school student. In the future,

plans include adding an award for a pre-service student in music,

who will be entering the teaching profession. Other subjects

creating lively discussion at the table were out of school music

credits, delivery of PLP credits, and the future of music programs

in the public school system.

Curriculum portfolio projects for the past year have included twomajor activities. We have participated in a review of the NationalVoluntary Curriculum and Standards for Instrumental Music asdeveloped by the Canadian BandAssociation. OBAprovided inputon the document and advice on its distribution. As well asendorsing the document, a board member was part of a CBC reporton the release of the Standards in February of 2004.A second major event is the adoption of the former UnionvilleWind Conductors' Symposium. This new event will now be calledthe OBA Conductors' Symposium. Essentially the philosophy willremain the same: To bring the best in the field of wind conductingto Ontario to provide an effective resource to band directors acrossthe province. One format change will include the addition of a

second conductors' symposium that will take place in a venue otherthan the GTA. For 2005 the Toronto area event will take place onSaturday, March 5 .Asecond event will take place in London at theUniversity of Western Ontario in mid-October. The plan forsubsequent years will be to hold the fall event in other venues suchas Ottawa, Niagara, and Kingston.Other curriculum projects that will eventually fall under thisportfolio include the Durham District Beginning BandSymposium.

The Ontario Provincial Honour Band successfully completed itssecond annual presentation in November 2003. Forty fourparticipants from large and small towns across Ontario took part inthis week long event. The rehearsal camp at Jackson's Point was ahighlight for the students and a major factor in the ensemble'ssuccess. Dr. Glenn Price was outstanding while leading the youngensemble through days of rehearsal, three school performances, a"Gala" concert in Barrie with the UWO Wind Ensemble and theirrole as a featured ensemble at the OMEA/CMIEC conference inHuntsville. Total audience participation was approximately 2000students/parents and community members and 700 music teachers

from across Ontario. Abudget shortfall of $988.00 was mainly theresult of lower than anticipated ticket sales to the Gala Concert inBarrie. Goals for 2004 include maintaining the quality and numberof participants, increasing participation from Northerncommunities, building a larger OPHB Committee and operatingwith a budget surplus to be carried forward to 2005.

Respectfully submitted,Jeff Wrigglesworth

In October a proposal went to the Board regarding the initiation of

a mentorship program for experienced and novice teachers. After a

brief discussion the proposal was adopted and a committee was

struck. Initially the program would begin with a monthly meeting

hosted by Dr. Denise Grant and Karen MacAdam with teachers

interested in participating in a discussion group (both experienced

and novice) called the "Breakfast Club". We have held three

meetings so far that have included 4 experienced teachers and 5

novice teachers which has generated a unique network of people

who are interested in pursuing this opportunity. Information about

these monthly discussion groups has gone out to all the co-

ordinators of music in the GTA school boards as well as posted on

the TDSB music conference. The committee struck by the Board

has not yet met to formalize a specific mentorship program and to

develop an action plan. This initiative has generated a lot of interest

it is just that people have not yet committed the time. I hope to plan

a strategy meeting in the upcoming months to launch a more formal

program that includes orientation sessions for both the mentor and

the protege and to generate even more interest by sending out

letters to principals and Curriculum Leaders within the GTA.

Another high-profile adjudicator and keynote speakerAnother excellent panel of adjudicatorsAn organized system of food ordering and distributionVolunteer T-shirts -- to be sponsored by a music companyA new space for directors -- the “directors’ quiet zone” -- with food and drinks -- a place to relax and socializeA fifth adjudicator each day to provide “video feedback” for each director on their conducting techniqueA small committee of OBA members to assist the co-ordinator with various responsibilities for the festivalIncreased sponsorship commitment (i.e., financial)New sponsors to join the team

Future Concerns

Low attendance -- each ensemble under 125 represents a loss of $125Rising costs of Le Parc Conference Centre -- we are already paying under half the cost of billable rentalBad weather -- winter storms and bad weather conditions can seriously affect the scheduling of our event

Future Goals

Satellite festivals across Ontario -- every MusicFest regional festival to become an OBA festivalTo become the premiere Concert Band Festival in Ontario -- with international bands participatingDirector education -- to assist in the quality of wind band teaching across Ontario

The Ontario Band Association website , www. onband.ca ,continues to be a very useful link to our members and prospectivemembers. In 2003 we began posting “In Harmony”newsletter excerpts /teasers to help promote the value of our

newsletter to non-member website visitors. We have continued toutilize the web to promote the OBA and disseminate informationregarding our activities that may be of interest or value to ourmembers. Postings in 2003 have included (but not limited to):Ontario Provincial Honour Band info and audition package, OBAConcert Band Festival info and registration package, UnionvilleWind Conductors Symposium info and registration brochure, newOBA membership brochure, newsletter excerpts, various eventnotices. We should continue to use and promote our web related e-mail addresses instead of personal e-mail addresses that are morelikely to change and leave members unable to contact us.Currently have:

Due to lack of activity and the demise of the hosting site the “BandChat” forum has been eliminated this year.It is time to do an entire website redesign using a morecontemporary layout, more colour, photos, sound clips. A largerestructuring like this would best be done during the summer breakto allow enough time to learn and implement new techniques. When the constitution revision/edit has been finished it should beposted again on the site. Need to implement measures to stem thetide of Spam/junk e-mail that continuously floods thewebmaestro's e-mail address. This is in part caused by thewebmaestro 's e-mail being posted on the site and being gatheredby automated e-mail mining web robots. In the mean time alldirectors and members can get a more guaranteed response fromt h e w e b m a e s t r o b y d i r e c t i n g a l l e n q u i r i e s t o :
