Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 22, 2020

Entrance Antiphon How worthy is the Lamb who was slain,

to receive power and divinity, and wisdom and strength and honor.

To him belong glory and power for ever and ever.

Glory to God Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,

we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,

Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world,

receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father,

have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One,

You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father, Amen.

Ezekiel 34:11-12,15-17 Thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will look after and tend my sheep. As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark. I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will give them rest, says the Lord GOD. The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy, shepherding them rightly.

As for you, my sheep, says the Lord GOD, I will judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd;

there is nothing I shall want.

I Corinthians 15:20-26,28 Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through man, the resurrection of the dead came also through man. For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ; then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. When everything is subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.’

The Liturgy of the Eucharist May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands

for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all

his holy Church.

Holy Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Mystery of Faith We proclaim your Death, O Lord,

and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

When we eat this Bread and drink this cup,

we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.

Save us, Savior of the world,

for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray… the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

Communion Antiphon

The Lord sits as King for ever. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Scripture readings and prayers provided

by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Reprinted with permission.

Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 22, 2020

Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ And these will go off to eternal punishment, But the righteous to eternal life.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

This Week’s Liturgy

This is 2020 Thanksgiving Week. At first glance, we might be hard-pressed to find things to be grateful for, especially as we review the last eight months! From what I read and hear – what with staying in place, limited travel, and social distancing – this

year’s Thanksgiving will be quite a bit different from our usual celebration. Today’s Solemnity of Christ the King wraps up this liturgical year. Next weekend we will mark the First Sunday of Advent and another new year in the Church’s life. During the last twelve months, our Sunday Gospels were taken from St. Matthew. In this new Church year, we will hear the Gospel of St. Mark. In the year following, it will be the Gospel of St. Luke. St. John’s Gospel is featured in the weeks after Easter until Pentecost. So, over a three-year cycle, we hear all the Gospels in their entirety: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Prior to the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) the same fifty-two Gospels were read over the course of a year at Sunday Mass. The Council called for “the treasury of the Scriptures to be opened.” The result was the Lectionary (book of Scriptural readings) published in the 1970’s. The Catholic Church did such a fine job with the Lectionary that it is has been adopted for use by all the mainline Christian Churches (Methodist, Lutheran, Congregationalist, Episcopalian, United Church of Christ, etc.) We will offer our customary Thanksgiving Day Mass this Thursday, November 26, at 9:30am. We cannot have the usual Presentation of the Gifts this year (including bringing up your offerings of canned goods) but you are asked to remember our November Canned Food Drive. Please check the announcement in this bulletin for the items most needed; your gifts can be left in the church lobbies weekdays 6:00am to 8:00pm, Saturdays 7:00am to 6:00pm, and Sundays 7:00am to 5:00pm. “When you feed my least brothers and sisters, you feed Me, says the Lord!” For many years we have sponsored an Advent Giving Tree. Various local services and charities, that promote the value of life, are suggested to receive our assistance. In the past, you were encouraged to pick a particular agency, purchase and wrap a needed gift, and leave that gift before the Marian or Holy Family Shrines in church. The pandemic requires that we modify the Advent Giving Tree for 2020. If you plan to participate, we ask that you purchase and provide GIFT CARDS ONLY. In this way, we will avoid close contact while collecting, sorting, bagging, and delivering your gifts. Please, do not leave your gift cards in the church; drop them off at the Parish Office (Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 8:00pm, Saturday 8:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday 8:00am to 1:00pm). And to save you a trip, you can purchase those gift cards at our Parish Office. In that way, you will both help the needy and a few cents per card will help our school. This year we will assist: Providence House: emergency shelter for children; West Side Catholic Center: food, clothing, shelter, advocacy; Edna House: safe house for women recovering from addictions; Malachi House: caring for the dying homeless. On a personal note: thank you for the prayers and the many expressions of concern last week. Fr. Chris Cox’s and my COVID tests both came back negative. So we are healthy and back to work...

The Parish Staff extends best wishes for a blessed and holy Thanksgiving Day.

ADVENT RETREAT: AWAKENING LONGING FOR A SAVIOR

The Franciscan Sisters, T.O.R. invite you to join them for a virtual Advent Retreat on Sunday, December 6th. Join our sisters and Fr. Boniface Hicks, OSB, to dig deep and rediscover your own longing for a Savior.

Through talks, music, prayer, your own silent reflection, and sharing with others, we hope that you will experience how the Lord wants to answer this longing.

All retreat content will be posted on our website on December 6th. We encourage you to set aside time on this day to pray with the content, either individually or as part of a group. The con-tent will remain posted on our website after this date so you can continue to watch and pray with it.

We’re also excited to offer the chance for you to participate in a virtual small group led by a Sister. These groups will be held on Sunday, December 6th and also throughout that week. If you’re interested, please sign up for a group on the event page on our website by December 3rd.

More information, and the retreat content itself, will be posted on our website here: https://www.franciscansisterstor.org/events/advent-retreat.

If you have any questions about the retreat, please call Sr. Anna Rose at (740) 544-5542, ext. 135.

SStt.. CChhaarrlleess BBoorrrroommeeoo22002200 AAddvveenntt GGiivviinngg TTrreeeeShare your blessings with someone in need this holiday season through our Parish Advent Giving Tree. Our giving tree supports four organizations committed to promoting life values.

This year, the pandemic requires that we modify the Advent Giving Tree. Out of concern for the safety & health of our charitable organizations and parishioners, we are requesting donations in the form of GIFT CARDS ONLY.

If you plan to participate, simply purchase a gift card for one of the beneficiaries listed. Place your gift card in an envelope with the name of the intended organization clearly printed on the outside. Then, bring your gift card by Sunday, December 20 to the Parish Office (M-F, 8am-8pm; Sat., 8am-5pm & Sun., 8am-1pm). Please do not leave gift cards in Church.

To save you a trip, you can purchase gift cards in the Parish Office. In that way, you will help the needy, and a few cents per card will help St. Charles School. Monetary donations may also be dropped off at the Parish Office, or made directly via each organization’s website. Call the Parish Office (440) 884-3030 with any questions.
