Second Sunday of Advent December 6, 2020

Entrance Antiphon O people of Sion, behold,

the Lord will come to save the nations, and the Lord will make the glory of his voice heard

in the joy of your heart.

Penitential Act I confess to almighty God

and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned,

in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to

do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;

therefore I ask the blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints,

and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Isaiah 40:1-5,9-11 Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins.

A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; the rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Go up on to a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings; cry out at the top of your voice, Jerusalem, herald of good news! Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah: Here is your God! Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by his strong arm; here is his reward with him, his recompense before him.

Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 85 Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD—for he proclaims peace to his people. Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land.

Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven.

The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. Justice shall walk before him, and prepare the way of his steps.

II Peter 3:8-14 Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard “delay,” but he is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out.

Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. But according to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot Or blemish before him, at peace.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands

for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all

his holy Church.

Holy Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Mystery of Faith We proclaim your Death, O Lord,

and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

When we eat this Bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord,

until you come again.

Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection

you have set us free.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray… the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

Communion Antiphon Jerusalem, arise and stand upon the heights,

and behold the joy which comes to you from God.

Scripture readings and prayers provided by the United States Conference

of Catholic Bishops. Reprinted with permission.

Mark 1:1-8 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God.

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father

almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Saturday 8:00am and the Tuesday & Thursday 8:30am Mass Intentions are being celebrated by Fr. Anselm at St. Andrew Abbey.

This Week’s Liturgy The lighting of the second candle on our Advent Wreath reminds us that the days to Christmas are growing fewer in number. It is not too soon to talk about this year’s holiday Mass schedule. We gave it a lot of considera-tion and discussion based on several factors.

We looked at attendance numbers from years past and worked in that the expectation to attend Mass is still “lifted” as it has been since mid-March, due to the pandemic. I want to stress, this schedule is for this COVID-19 year only!

Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 244:00pm (livestream)6:00pm & 8:00pm

No Midnight Mass this Year!

Christmas Day, Friday, Dec.25 8:00am & 10:00am (livestream) No Noon or late afternoon Mass!

New Year’s Eve, Thursday, Dec. 314:00pm

New Year’s Day, Friday, Jan. 110:00am (livestream)

This Tuesday, December 8, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. However, this year there is no expectation to attend Mass, due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, for those who wish to observe the day, there will be two daily Masses: 7:00am and 7:00pm. Under the title of the Immaculate Conception, the Blessed Mother is patroness of the United States. In our church, Mary’s image is first on the left, near the sanctuary, among our ceiling saints. And what are the colors of that painting? Why “red, white, and blue” of course! Again, due to the health crisis situation, participation in our Advent 2020 Giving Tree will not require purchasing, wrapping, and collecting individual gifts. For this year, we request GIFT CARDS ONLY for the four organizations we will help. Each place we will help emphasizes respect for life in life’s many stages, from pregnancy to natural death. Do not leave those cards in church; please drop them off at the Parish Office. Check the Advent Giving Tree article in this bulletin for details. St. Charles Parish Council will meet this Thursday, December 10, at 7:45pm in the John Paul II Room (second floor) of the Parish Activities Center. And don’t forget to “clip-and-keep” the December Parish Activities Calendar detailing the many things planned for the final days of 2020!

Merici Chapel… This is the Second Sunday of Advent — let us prepare our hearts and souls to cele-brate the birth of Jesus. How many hours will you spend on your computer ordering gifts for family and friends?... Now, how many times will you stop by Merici Chapel and visit Jesus and pray and talk to Him?

Thank you to all of you for your continued dedication to Merici Chapel and Eucharistic Adoration. Our Lord will certainly bless each of you for your dedication. Based upon our current records, 112 of the 168 hours of the week are covered by one or more Eucharistic Adorers. Our Goal is 100% coverage, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In an effort to update our records for accura-cy, if you are currently adoring during one of these missing hours, please email Michael Coyle at [email protected] or complete the form below and drop it off at the Parish Office. Likewise, if your time or day has changed since our last update, please email or complete the form below as well. Again, thank you for your dedication.
