Dear Members of the Archery Family

It is my proud privilege and pleasure to place this Secretary General’s Report before AAI General Council

which provides with an overview of the achievements and activities of the Association during the

intervening phase from May, 2010 to August, 2011.

First of all, I would like to mention that a very successful Archery event that was conducted during the

Commonwealth Games. India and England demonstrated their dominance in both the Recurve and

Compound events. This was the first multi-sports games where all five continents won medals in Archery.

The house-full spectators’ stand at the Yamuna Sports Complex has left an unforgettable mark in the minds

of participants, media and FITA.

We have had many important events since our last meeting including two multisport events with Archery as

part of their programme. Another busy period ended and we ought to be pleased with the glorious

outcome in terms of achievements earned by our archers. Besides winning 3 Gold, 1 Silver, 4 Bronze in

2010-Commonwealth Games-Delhi, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze in 2010-Asian Games-Ghanzhou, 1 Silver in World

Championship-Torino, 1 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze Meals in Youth World-Legnica and 2 Gold, 9 Silver, 3

Bronze in World Cups, Indian archers won a haul of 20 Gold, 21 Silver and 16 Bronze Medals in international

competitions during this period. There has been an obvious growth of activities in the AAI over the past 5

years. Since 2006, this growth has considerably increased owing to introduction of World Cup event by

FITA. There is no sign of any possible change in this evolution. The future workload has to be anticipated

with new resources.

I, on behalf of whole archery and sports fraternity and on my personal behalf take this pleasure opportunity

to congratulate our President, Prof.Vijay Kumar Malhotra for shouldering the responsibility of Indian

Olympic Association as Acting President. Due to his untiring and dedicated efforts, the untenable sports bill

for controlling over the activities of sports federations tabled by the sports ministry has been turned down

by the Union Cabinet. This is making a difference and the tense environment of Indian sports has now

improved in a positive manner.

Deepika Kumari –‘THE CURRENT STAR OF INDIAN ARCHERY’

The 17-year-young Ace Archer, Deepika Kumari (5th seeded), who was entered in Indian team hardly 3

years back, deserves to be singled out for her individual contribution to scale new heights to Indian archery. She proved herself truly as the ‘Current Star of Indian Archery’ through her extraordinary

performances in International and National competitions. The year-2010 has brought her to the public's

notice when she won the Women Recurve Champion’s Title in Commonwealth Games at home ground.

Holding the Cadet World Champion’s title, she recently occupied the top slot of the podium in Junior World

Championship-Poland. She becomes the youngest Indian archer who earned the honour to qualify for the

Olympics. She started her victorious journey with Silver Medal in 3rd World Cup-USA in August 2010,

thereafter she never looked back and bagged Individual Silver Medal in 4th World Cup-Shanghai and

qualified for World Cup Final -2010. Then, she won historical Commonwealth Individual and Team

Champions’ Titles. She was the top scorer amongst team members that clinched Team Bronze Medal in

Asian Games-Guanzhou. In 2011, she was the part of Bronze winning team and 2nd ranked mixed team in 2nd

World Cup-Antalaya in June. Her creditable contribution as a team member of Recurve Women for settling

Silver Medal in the World Championship-Torino for the first time since the inception of Indian archery is

worth mentioning. The tremendous feet in 3rd World Cup-Ogden awarded her Individual as well as Team Silver Medals. In view of her outstanding results in 2011, she has been qualified for the World Cup Final to

be stage in Istanbul on 24-25 September, 2011.

The laudable successes accomplished by Indian archery are :-

•••• Indian Recurve Women team obtained 2nd position and Recurve Men attained 7th position in

overall FITA world ranking. Deepika Kumari and Jayant Talukdar acquired 5th and 15th ranks

respectively in world ranking.

the best of five sets final, Deepika went out of the contest after losing the first two sets. Though she tied

the third one for a point, the Korean came up with three perfect 10s to seal the victory. Before this, she

defeated Wu Hui Ju of Chinese Taipei 6-0 in the semifinals and downed fifth seed Lorig Khatuna of the

Women of Ms. Dola Banerjee and Ms. Deepika Kumari have been declared as qualifier for the Archery

World Cup Final held at Edinburg (Great Britain) from 18th to 19th September, 2010 based on their

the quarterfinal match, Talukdar ousted World Champion - Frangilli Michele of Italy scoring 26, 25, 28,

30, 29 against 26, 27, 26, 26, 29 but failed to edge out B.Ellison of USA in the Semi-Finals ultimately met with M.Galiazzo in the Bronze Medal Match. Finally he came with victory to take the BRONZE MEDAL

in three sets (30, 29, 26, 29 Vs 29, 26, 27, 28). The effort of Talukdar in the World Cup final was

creditable. Talukdear and Galiazzo have met five times before the World Cup and Talukdar won four

• Dola Banerjee and Deepika Kumari

Dola Banerjee qualified for the final held at Dubai in 2007 and titled as World Cup Final Champion.

Deepika is the second Indian woman to make it to the final.

Dola Banerjee could not come up with the expectations and lost her first match loosing all her three sets.

She stood at 8th position.

In view of less exposure to shoot in senior international competitions, she lost to Victoriya Koval at a

close match (4-6).

f) XIX Commonwealth Games – Delhi

The XIX Commonwealth Games were successfully organised at Delhi from 3rd to 14th October 2010.

The competition was held in 17 sports and 7,572 athletes from 71 Commonwealth Nations competed in

these Games. It was also the largest international multi-sport event to be staged in Delhi and India,

eclipsing the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. Archery competition was played at newly built Archery

Stadium in DDA Yamuna Sports Complex, Surajmal Vihar, Delhi from 4th to 10th October, 2010.

All participating member nations of the Commonwealth including archers, team officials, technical

officials, presidents/secretaries appreciated and applauded the management and organization of

Archery event and Commonwealth Games as a whole. However, there were some lapses and delays on

the part of preparation of Field of Final Play. I must appreciate the enthusiastic team members of

International Archery Federation (FITA) who worked very hard with Archery Association of India to fill

up the gaps for delivering best possible results.

Commonwealth Games received widespread international media attention, with criticism being leveled

against the organisers for the slow pace of work, as well as issues related to security and hygiene. The

President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, said that India had made a good

foundation for a future Olympics bid. Commonwealth games Federation Chief Mike Fennell stated that

"Delhi delivered a fantastic Games". The final medal tally was led by Australia. The host nation India had

its best performance ever to finish second.

India created a new record not only remained at the second position in the medals tally but also won its

highest haul of medals in the Commonwealth games. India won total 38 Gold, 27 Silver and 36 Bronze

Medals in CWG 2010. Australia on No. 1 with 78 Gold Medals & England on 3rd position with 37 Gold

Medals, 27 Silver Medal, 36 Bronze Medal.

Indian archers were trilled and motivated a lot to get the enthusiastic support from boisterous home

spectators. The cheering loud was so much that can be judged from the facts that announcer had to

request Indian spectators again and again for keeping silence at crucial moment unable the shooter to

concentrate on target.

Based on selection trials and continous rigorous training of more than three years, twelve-archers, five-

coaches and two officials have been short-listed to compete in Archery competition :-

The game of Archery has contributed 3 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze in bringing the Indian medal tally

to 101 figure in the Commonwealth Games. However, the number of Golds and Silvers were not as

per due expectation of the association. The performance report of our archers is mentioned below :-

• Recurve Women ‘Individual GOLD MEDAL’ - 16-year old prodigy, Deepika Kumari had

created history by winning first ever individual GOLD Medal in Archery at Commonwealth Games

defeating three times Olympian – Ms. AJ Williamson comfortably. The level of her form can be

understood from the fact that she won all three sets earning 27, 28, 30 against 26, 25, 24. Before this,

she registered victory over Australian archer in quarterfinal and Malaysian archer in semi final. She

impressed a lot with her performance. She got the 1st rank in qualification stage also.

• Recurve Men – ‘INDIVIDUAL GOLD MEDAL’ – Rahul Banerjee occupied the top slot of the

podium by in the men’s Recurve Individual event. He pushed Canadian Archer – Lyon Jason to the

silver place in a nerve wrecked final match in 6-5 sets. It was really surprising that Rahul won last

three matches in tie breaker. Similar as Deepika, he was in top position in qualification round.

• Women Recurve ‘TEAM GOLD MEDAL’ – Recurve Women trio – Deepika Kumari, Dola

Banerjee and Bombayala Devi edged out England (207-206) for gold in a neck to neck final match of

Commonwealth Games. They defeated Malayasia in semi Final

• Compound Men ‘TEAM SILVER MEDAL’- One Silver medal came in the quiver of Indian

troop through Men’s compound team comprising of C.Srither, Ritual Chatterjee and Ch.Jignas. The

trio lost the final to England 232-229. Before the final, they trounced New Zealand (226 Vs 225) in

quarter final and South Africa in close Semi Final (226 Vs 224). Individual performance of both

compound men and women team was below the average.

• Recurve Men ‘TEAM BRONZE MEDAL’ – Our recurve team that includes Rahul Banerjee,

Jayanta Talukdar and Tarundeep Rail lost to Australia in the semi final at 216-211 and compelled to

meet with England at Bronze Medal. Trio eliminated Sri Lanka (213 -211) at Quarter final.

• Compound Women ‘TEAM BRONZE MEDAL”- in the women’s team compound bronze

medal play off, Jhano, Bheigyabati & Gagandeep defeated Malaysia by 4 points margin (223 -219)

and took away Bronze.

• Recurve Men and Women ‘INDIVIDUAL BRONZE MEDLAS’- Jayanta Talukdar and Dola

Benrejee won Individual Bronze Medals for the country in their respective categories.

It was good to see that some previous National records in Recurve, Compound and Indian round Men &

Women categories were broken in the National Championships conducted during the year 2007. The best

part of National activities was the State Associations that had no results in the past have defeated the

experienced State/Units. This trend and spirit needs to be continued in future for the rightful development

of our game.

The responsible State Associations/Units, organizers did a great job for which I wish to place on record my

sincere thanks and congratulations to them. A good number of participation in terms of number of States

and archers has been a positive sign towards board basing of archery. The level of organisation of the

events has been improved compared to previous years however; the space of improvement in the areas of

boarding, lodging and ground facilities in one or two events is still there. Organisers should make efforts to

involve print and electronic media for getting wide coverage to the event in order to publicize our game

amongst masses.

We cannot forget the motivated and dedicated technical officials who have played a key role in making our

domestic programmes a resounding success.

I am grateful to volunteers, scorers and other supporting staff who gave a helping hand directly or

indirectly in conducting the various competitions. Our successs in deliverying event is their merit.

Championship at Jamshedpur in 2003 also goes to Mr.Malhotra. All representatives of participating

countries resolved that commonwealth countries should unit and come under one umbrella for the cause of

including archery in the next Commonwealth Games to be held at Glasgow.

It was reported that the Commonwealth Archery Federation was formed in 1995 during 1st Commonwealth

Championship at New Delhi under the President-ship of Prof.Malhotra. Discussing the subject to revive the

CAF, it has been decided to appoint Prof.Malhotra as Honorary Life President.

It has also been resolved that FITA Council will establish an ad hoc committee of 5-7 members (atleast one

from each continent) to promote the extension of archery in the Commonwealth, to consider the staging of

Commonwealth Cup, perhaps in 2012, to consider the revival of existing Commonwealth Archery

Federation and to explore the possibility to have archery included in the Commonwealth Game on a

regular basis.

Shri Anil Kamineni, President, Andhra Pradesh Archery Association and former Secretary General of

Archery Association has been appointed as Indian representative for ad-hoc committee by Archery

Association of India.

Attending Seminars/Workshops

Archery Association of India has recommended following for attending various international seminars and

workshops meant for coaches and officials :-

1. Dr.Joris Paulose and Shri Brijesh Kumar (Asian Contingent Judges) have been accredited to

FITA Continental Judges’ Panel based on their performance in the examination conducted

during the FITA Judges Seminar at Bangkok from 3rd to 5th June, 2011 by World Archery

Federation. Shri Indranil Datta who appeared for FITA candidate examination has been

declared as successful candidate. Shri Pramod Chandukar had also attended the seminar.

2. Dr.K.B.Gurung, Secretary, Sikkim Archery Association and Shri Pramod Chandukar,

Secretary, Maharashtra State Archery Association were deputed to attend Archery Event

Organisers’ Seminar-2011 held at Shanghai (China) from 9th to 12th September, 2011.

According to Shri Gurung and Shri Chandukar, the seminar was really an eye opener and will

help greatly in organizing and managing big events in India.

3. Shri Gajendra Sharma, Coach (SAI) has been nominated recently for the 5th World Archery

Coaching Seminar to be held in London (United Kingdom) from 7-12 November, 2011.

4. Shri S.Gopey Singh, Coach will be attending the Compound Coaching Seminar to be held at

Cairo (Egypt) in 2012.

Archery Association of India has a plan to conduct Technical Officials and Organisers’ Seminar at

Delhi with a view to create a pool of Technical Officials so that the need of officials for hold domestic &

International Tournaments could be met out. Apart from this, the association wishes to have another

programme which will be opened to any person who has in interest in learning archery.

Change in rules and Age groups

World Archery Federation has made numerous amendments in competition rules and age groups for Junior

and Cadet.

I) Compound Competition at 50 Mt. distance

FITA also sent a clear message to give more identity to compound and differentiate it from recurve.

Compound archers have now to shoot at 50m distance (72 arrows) followed by the Compound

Round with elimination and finals at 50m on 6-ring target face (regular scoring* for Individuals,

Teams and Mixed Teams) with a very challenging hit-zone target. For getting more details, please

refer to FITA Book (I), Article 4.5.1.5 and 4.5.1.6.

II) New Elimination process

New elimination process has been replaced the previous system by giving more weightage to the

ranking of qualification round. FITA Book (I), revised Article 7.6.6.1 to 7.6.6.5 may be gone through.

III) Introduction of Mixed Event

The mixed team competition that was introduced as an exhibition category in 2009 has now been

official. The event consists of one man and one woman from the same team shooting four ends of four

arrows in a match. A new concept of Mixed (Men and Women) has been introduced in all the

international competitions by World Archery Federation which got a great popularity.

IV) Age Groups for Cadet and Junior

For Cadet - An athlete may participate in a Cadet Class in tournaments when the competition takes

place up to and in the year of his 17th birthday.

For Junior - An athlete may participate in a Junior Class in tournaments when the competition takes

place up to and in the year of his 20th birthday.

The revised age rules will be effective in Sub-Junior and Junior National Competitions-2011 onwards.

Archery Academy - Yamuna Sports Complex, Delhi

It is good news that as a result of persistent follow up by our President, AAI Prof.Vijay Kumar Malhotra with

regard to right utilization of Archery stadium, DDA Yamuna Sport Complex left behind after the

Commonwealth Games at highest level, the Archery Academy at YSC has recently been started there.

Archery Association of India has also been allowed to hold the National, International Championships and

Coaching Seminars there.

Allotment of office Space for the Association

A number of letters have been written to Sports Minister and Sports Authority of India by President, AAI to

re-allot the office space to the National Sports Federations to set up their permanent offices at SAI premises.

Calendar of National/International Events

Calendar of National and International Archery Events 2011-12 and 2012-13 is attached along with this

report to discuss under Agenda Item No.6 & 7.

Equipment Support

The members will be pleased to know that a total amount of Rs.32,00,000/- was disbursed to top 32 elite

Recurve and Compound men and women Archers (Rs.1,00,0000/- each) by Archery Association of India for

the first time as equipment support.

With regard to archery equipment under 75-25% govt.scheme, I would like to share with the House that the

association could not get desired success during the years 2009 and 2010 as the entire government

machinery was busy towards various activities in preparing the Commonwealth Games-2010 and the matter

relating to import of equipment under the 75-25% govt.scheme was kept in cold storage by the govt.

It is a matter of great satisfaction that as a result of regular follow up, Ministry of Youth Affiars and Sports,

Govt.of India has approved the AAI proposal put up under the 75-25% scheme, in principal in a meeting

held on 14th September, 2011 at Shastri Bhawan with the representatives of the association. The process of

placing order would be started as soon as we get the official sanction order from the government. It is not

out of place to mention that that the equipment would be delivered to requisite eligible State

Associations/Units in a very near future.

Condolence

It is grieved that Shri Cherukuri Lenin Son of Shri Cherukuri Satyanarayana passed away in a tragic road

accident on 24th October, 2011. He was a wonderful human being and one of the pioneers of Compound

Archery in India. He won a good number of medals in various competitions. He was involved in producing

and grooming the career of many compound archers.

I, on behalf of Archery family pay my homage to late Shri Ch.Lenin and pray to the Almighty God to give

strength, courage and fortitude to his bereaved family members to bear this irreparable loss.

Conclusion

In closing, I would like to mention the AAI has been striving hard to accomplish our aims and objectives for

which it was formed. We continue to pursue the annual milestones that we have set for each year and the

individual components that make up these milestones. This is not limited to the AAI, but we have the

involve Member Associations and experienced archers, coaches and other officials so that we may get the

best advice possible. Your contributions to these efforts are crucial and instrumental as we seek to push

forward with the growth and development of Archery.

I thank you all for your time and proactive efforts and specially Prof.Vijay Kumar Malhotra, President, AAI

under whose leadership and able guidance, the standard of Archery in India has improved a lot and is still

marching ahead, for which I sincerely thank him. Even with his political and social commitments and new

assignment as acting president of Indian Olympic Association towards the development of Indian sports,

the AAI President has been involved enormously for the betterment of Archery in the country. The credit for

bringing laurels and series of successes to India, of course goes to tremendous efforts made by our Archers

and their talented Coaches without them we could not have grown as much. While congratulating our

Senior, Junior and Cadet Archers both male and female and their Coaches for their mammoth efforts, I call

upon them to put all-out efforts to develop a strong winner’s instinct in the days to come.

I must thank the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Govt. of India for all the financial assistance which is most

vital to keep Indian Archery in the Global map also Sports Authority of India and Indian Olympic

Association for the courtesy, cooperation and assistance rendered to Archery Association of India.

I thank all our AAI staff, particularly Shri Gunjan Abrol, Assistant Secretary for wonderful service in

coordinating the affairs of AAI nationally and internationally.

I can not finish this without thanking the SAHARA India Pariwar for all the cooperation and support

extended to the Archery Association of India. The year 2011 was the third year of our partnership with

SAHARA.

Thank you all again !

JAI HIND !!
