PERSPECTIVES

Towards a new great yearSunday, 15 April, 2012

Thingyan, Myanmar Traditional NewYear Festival, reaches its tail end. The last yearwent by in flash and a new year begins. Thepreceding year was a momentous one whichwitnessed plenty of noticeable changes in variousfields.

During the previous year, the electedcivillian government instituted a series ofdramatic reforms and won domestic supportand international recognition which was madetangible by a number of high-profile visits fromthe western countries once hostile to Myanmar. The government, marking its first anniversaryof taking office, presented the people the freeand fair by-elections as a gift. Some sanctionsagainst her were lifted with some to be endedsoon.

MPs debated public affairs and passednew legislations in three parliamentary sessions, thoroughly acting as a check and balance onthe cabinet.

Peace talks with national race armedgroups during the last year were said to besuccessful, entering into agreements at eachlevel.

Signs indicated Myanmar’s economywould soon boom, inviting more foreign directinvestment. Lawmakers are also working topass new legislations to lure more foreigninvestors. Fixed for decades, foreign currencybecame float in Myanmar as well.

Various restrictions on taxation, mediaand many other sectors were relaxed. Myanmarhas had more and more transparency since theprevious year, boosting chances for realizationof “good governance and clean government”.

To look back on the very recent year, itwas a banner year. As we take a step towards anew year, we have to review our wish lists for thepast year—how many yeses we could tip—andrenew new ones, leaving out the things what welearned from the past year went against us.

We, the editorial board of the New Lightof Myanmar, wish you all our subscribers andthe people of the Republic of the Union ofMyanmar could tick yeses to each and everyline on their wish lists for the coming year.

Powers seek to ease nuclear deadlockwith Iran

ISTANBUL, 14 April — Iran and worldpowers have a rare chance on Saturday to halta downward diplomatic spiral over Teheran’snuclear programme and ease fears of a newMiddle East war when they resume stalledtalks, but diplomats warn against expectingquick results. The negotiations in Istanbul, the first between Iran and the six powers in 15months, are unlikely to yield any majorbreakthrough but Western diplomats hope atlast to see readiness from Teheran to startdiscuss issues of substance.

That, they say, would mark a big changein Iran’s attitude from the last meeting whenit refused even to talk about its nuclearprogramme and could be enough forscheduling a second round of talks next month, perhaps in Baghdad. Such an outcome could,at least for the time being, dampen persistentspeculation that Israel might launch militarystrikes on Iranian nuclear sites to prevent itsenemy from obtaining atomic arms. Both sidessay they are ready at the meeting, which is dueto start at around 10 am (0700 GMT), to worktowards resolving the deepening dispute overthe nuclear programme which Iran says haspurely peaceful purposes.

Mexican drug cartel leader sent to prison in ColoradoDENVER, 14 April — The leader of a Mexican drug cartel was sentenced on Friday to more than 22 years

in prison by a federal judge in Colorado, who said the kingpin’s criminal enterprise sold $1 billion worth ofcocaine in eight US states. Oscar Arriola, 43, was “a clear and present danger to this country and its citizens,”US District Judge Robert Blackburn said.

The cartel distributed cocaine in 2002 and 2003 in New York, Illinois, Georgia and five other states froma storage centre at a Colorado ranch, before an anonymous tip led to an investigation, the US Drug EnforcementAdministration said. Arriola and his brother, Miguel, were among 29 people indicted in 2003 in federal courtin Denver. Oscar Arriola was arrested in Mexico in 2006 and extradited to the United States in 2010. In 2010,Miguel Arriola was sentenced to 20 years in prison on drug trafficking charges involving the Arriola cartel’ssmuggling of tons of cocaine from Mexico to the United States.

Experts sleuth out whatkilled Puget Sound orca

SEATTLE, 14 April—Two months after a 3-year-oldendangered orca washed ashore bloodied and bruised inWashington state the cause of her death remains a mystery.Marine experts believe the female killer whale, known as L-112,died of massive blunt force trauma, but they’re still examiningevidence and waiting for tests of tissue samples to determinewhat caused that trauma. Some orca experts, however, suspectthe injuries are linked to an underwater explosion or militarytraining activity at sea.

Law enforcement officers with the National Oceanic andAtmospheric Administration last week began looking into theorca’s death and are seeking information from the US Navyand other sources about their activities as part of itsinvestigation, said NOAA spokesman Brian Gorman. “So far, there haven’t been any red flags,” he said. The Navy says itwasn’t conducting activity off the coast in the weeks before11 Feb, when the orca’s 12-foot long carcass was discoveredon Long Beach on Washington’s southern coast.

What would happen If youfell into a Black Hole?

WASHINGTON, 14 April — Black holes are without questionsome of the strangest places in the universe. So massive thatthey hideously deform space and time, so dense that theircentres are called “points at infinity,” and pitch- black becausenot even light can escape them, it isn’t surprising that so manypeople wonder what it would be like to visit one. It’s not exactlya restive vacation spot, as it turns out. If you were to take a stepinto a black hole, your body would most closely resemble“toothpaste being extruded out of the tube,” said Charles Liu,an astrophysicist who works at the American Museum ofNatural History’s Hayden Planetarium.

Liu said that when an object crosses a black hole’s “eventhorizon” — its outer boundary, or point of no return — the samephysics that causes Earth’s ocean tides begins to take effect.Gravity’s strength decreases with distance, so the moon pullson the side of the Earth closer to it a bit more vigorously thanthe side farther from it, and as a result, Earth elongates ever soslightly in the direction of the moon. The land is sturdy, so itdoesn’t move much, but the water on Earth’s surface is fluid,so it flows along the elongated axis.—Internet

‘Living fossil’ fish is evenolder than thought

NEW YORK , 14 April — The coelacanth, a “living fossil” fishthat predates the dinosaurs, is some 17 million years older thanpreviously thought, scientists have found. The earliest knownskull of a coelacanth, unearthed in Yunnan, China dates the fishin its current shape to about 400 million years ago, accordingto research by the Chinese Academy of Sciences published onTuesday in Nature Communications.

Coelacanths peaked in abundance about 240 million yearsago. They were thought to have died out around 65 million yearsago until one was caught off South Africa in 1938. Closelyrelated to the lungfish, coelacanths usually live at depths ofbetween 200 and 1,000 metres (650 and 3,250 feet). Greyish-brown with spots, they can grow up to two metres (6.5 feet) inlength and weigh as much as 91 kilos (200 pounds).— Internet

LOS ANGELES, 14 April —Starships, warp speed, transporters, phasers. Think“Star Trek” technology is onlythe stuff of fiction? Thinkagain. Dr Peter Jansen, a PhDgraduate of the CognitiveScience Laboratory atMcMaster University inHamilton, Ontario, Canada, has developed a scientificmeasurement device based onthe tricorders used by CaptainKirk, Spock, Dr McCoy andother space adventurers onthe classic TV series that hasspawned numerous spin-offsin more than 45 years. “StarTrek inspired me to be ascientist” said Jansen, whohas been formally working onhis tricorder prototypes since2007, but toying with the ideaof making a functioning devicesince he was “a kid in highschool.”

The 29-year-old Jansen’sschool days spanned the late1990s when “Star Trek:Voyager” was on the air. Itfeatured his favourite tricorder,a model with screens on topand bottom. The first tricorderappeared on the originalshow’s initial episode in 1966,when Capt. Kirk swaggeredtoward audiences with hisphaser weapon holstered tohis side but a tricorder in hishand. The hand-held devicesfor data sensing, analysis and

recording, have been a part of“Star Trek” ever since. But ifJansen, a self-confessed“addicted maker” of things, issuccessful at developing, testing and bringing hisinstrument into the public, thetricorder may not be just thestuff of “Star Trek” prop rooms. It may be used for real.

Jansen said his tricordercan take atmosphericmeasurements, or ambienttemperature, pressure orhumidity. It can takeelectromagnetic measure-ments to test magnetic fields, and it can make spatial

measurements of distance, location, or motion.Fascinating, as Spock mightsay. Jansen thinks of histricorder as a “general tool” —a kind of “Swiss Army Knife”— with practical uses inbuilding inspection, forinstance, where it might helptaking temperature andhumidity readings or be adistance sensor to measurerooms. It resembles the devicecarried by countless “AwayTeam” members in “Star Trek- The Next Generation” - hisfavorite of the “Star Trek”shows, he notes.— Reuters

BEIJING, 14 April —China’s central bankannounced Saturday a slighteasing of its controversialcurrency controls. It says itwill allow the country’s yuanto rise and fall by a slightlywider margin against the dollarin daily trading. The changecould allow a faster rise forthe yuan, which Washingtonand other trading partnerscomplain is undervalued. Butany increase will likely be toosmall to satisfy many criticsand Beijing already haswarned that future gains willbe limited.

The central bank said itwill allow the yuan to fluctuateby up to 1 percent in valueagainst the dollar each daybeginning Monday, up from0.5 percent previously. Thebank took the unusual step ofissuing a statement in Englishas well as in Chinese, clearlyintending it for foreignaudiences. The United Statesand other governments sayan undervalued yuan givesChina’s exporters an unfairprice advantage, swelling itstrade surplus and hurtingforeign competitors at a timewhen other governments arestruggling to lowerunemployment. ChinesePremier Wen Jiabao, the

Wen said the yuanalready has gained 30 percentin value in real terms since2005. That increase has failedto satisfy critics.

What we call it What we call it Thingyan: Thingyan: The big scrThe big screeneenNathan

“Jaunty tune....drifting in the wind ofsummer’s Tagu”

Yes. Thingyan melodies are everywhere.Plenty of lively Thingyan songs offer us awide range of options. Rock or pop or rap?Any type of Thingyan song is at yourfingertips. And there are also plenty of goldenoldies still stealing our hearts. They survivesnot a year or two, but for decades.

The catchy songs were once played bybands of decorated floats in MandalayThingyan. We cannot separate Thingyanand Mandalay as it is the cultural city and thecapital of the last monarchy with fragrance ofthe ancient times still fresh. Also MandalayThingyan and the decorated floats areinseparable. As Thingyan festival wasdrawing nearer, traditional rivalry grew againamong Mandalarians over whose decoratedfloat would be the most beautiful one andwhich float’s band would win rapturousapplause of audience. Young men’s bandscomposed new songs competitively to lureattention of the audience. Myoma was thena leading float and band. Myoma Nyein isdoubtless the top songsmith. Myoma andits mascot Silver Swan passed into history.Fortunately, it is still alive and kicking aswell.

There are many books, fiction or non-fiction, about Mandalay Thingyan. Therearea also many films depicting MandalayThingyan. Needless to say that Myoma is a

must in each work. Among films portrayingThingyan, Thingyan Moe (Thingyan Rain) isa blockbuster. No Thingyan movie can equalthe success of the award-winning musical tillnow. The film revolves around MandalayThingyan and Myoma. It follows a youngman who plays keyboard for a band of a floatwith the love of music inherited from hisfarther, a pianist.

Maung Tin Oo, who is well known for acouple of blockbusters and award-winningworks and succeeded in bringing Myanmarlifestyles to the silver screen, directed thefilm. It stars Nay Aung, Khin Than Nu, ZinWaing, May Than Nu, Zaw One and ThidaTheint. Thingyan Moe won three MyanmarMotion Picture Academy Awards for 1985,including the best picture prize.

It tells the romantic love story of a youngmusician and a girl of the-cream-of-the-cropfamily. Despite the clichéd plot, audiencefound themselves sticking to each and everyscene of the movie. They are attracted bybreathtaking scenes of Mandalay, upbeatThingyan music and stately traditional choraldances. The film itself explores neglectedbeauties around us, its scores tell howbrotherly or sisterly love prevails in thecelebrations and the traditional dancesportray elegance.

A number of movies showing theMyanmar’s significant festival hit the bigscreen these years. Almost all could not follow

in the footsteps of Thingyan Moe while someeven destroy the essence of the festival.

They show girls running on a beach withswimming suits and playing water in skintightdresses. They follow boys tailing a girl withone among them begging for her love. Theyuse schoolboy humours. And they call itThingyan movie.

The filmmakers may possibly argue,“That is what the age is.” Movies have astrong impact on young watchers who later

emulate what actors and actresses say, dressand behave in movies. And do films againshow how these young people do?

Whatsoever, I am still hoping to see anew Thingyan film alike depicting howMyanmar Traditional Thingyan is lovelyand elegant and conveys the pure essenceon the big screen. Even if my wish is not tobe fulfilled, Thingyan Moe will still make myThingyan days in a series of years to comecomplete.

There was this guy and he had a girlfriend calledLorraine who was very pretty and he liked her a lot.

One day he went to work to find that a new girl hadstarted. Her name was Clearly and she was absolutelygorgeous. He became quite besotted with her and after awhile it became obvious that she was interested in him too.

But this guy was a loyal man and he wouldn’t getinvolved with Clearly while he was still going out withLorraine.

He decided that there was nothing for it but to break upwith her and get it on with the new girl.

He planned several times to tell Lorraine but he couldn’tbring himself to do it. One day they went for a walk along theriver bank when Lorraine slipped and fell in to the river. Thecurrent carried her off and she drowned. The guy stoppedfor a moment by the river and then ran off smiling andsinging: “I can see Clearly now Lorraine has gone”

at Wembley.—INTERNET

LONDON, 14 April—Andy Carroll scored adramatic late winner asLiverpool came from behindto defeat Merseyside rivalsEverton 2-1 to reach the FA

Cup final at Wembley hereon Saturday.

Carroll — the club’smuch-maligned £35 million

record signing — glanced ina Craig Bellamy free-kick inthe 87th minute to keepLiverpool on course for adomestic cup double.

It was the second time in

five days that Carroll had cometo Liverpool’s rescue afterscoring an injury-time winnerin the Premier League victory

over Blackburn in midweek.More importantly the

goal ensured Liverpool havethe opportunity to finish adisappointing season on ahigh in next month’s finalwhere they will face the winnerof Sunday’s last-four clashbetween Tottenham andChelsea. Carroll’s decisivestrike came after Liverpoolhad fought back to levelthrough Luis Suarez on 62minutes following NikicaJelavic’s opener for Everton.

Liverpool had startedwell, with Glen Johnsonsurging forward menacinglyafter only three minutes torelease Carroll.

The pony-tailed strikercut back deftly to JaySpearing but the youngmidfielder should have donebetter than a shot which flewharmlessly over. Liverpoolchances thereafter were fewand far between, and whileKenny Dalglish’s side oftenadvanced into goodattacking positions theirforays invariably fizzled outbecause of poor play in thefinal third. Everton mean-while looked com-fortablethroughout the first period, mopping up Liverpool’sattacks with ease andprobing for openings.

Under climate change, winnersand losers on the coral reef

SCIENCE DAILY, 14 April—As ocean temperatures rise, some species of corals are likely to succeed at the expense ofothers, according to a report published online on April 12 inthe Cell Press journal Current Biology that details the firstlarge-scale investigation of climate effects on corals.

“The good news is that, rather than experiencingwholesale destruction, many coral reefs will survive climatechange by changing the mix of coral species as the oceanwarms and becomes more acidic,” said Terry Hughes ofJames Cook University in Australia. “That’s important forpeople who rely on the rich and beautiful coral reefs of todayfor food, tourism, and other livelihoods.”

In an attempt to understand the sorts of changes that maytake place as the world’s oceans warm, the researchersexamined the coral composition of reefs along the entirelength of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.—Internet
