Community radio

Community radio stations are a new type of not-for-profit radio service, designed to operate on a small-scale and to deliver social gain to one or more communities

Community radio was introduced in 2004. - 360 applications - 201 groups awarded licences - 135 stations on air

Range of communities - general audience - urban (18%) or town / rural (41%). -- - minority ethnic groups (14%) - young people (9%) - religious groups (7%)

Funding - Community radio fund, £483,859 (7%) - Non-public sources, £3,180,869 (47%) - Local authorities, £1,054,047 (16%) - Other public funds, £2,050,619 (30%)
