Fee Collection Schedule The total fee for the 2013 Season is $500.00. This fee supports our operating budget and pays for competition fees, transportation, professional drill design/music arrangements, uniform cleaning/alterations, instructional staff as well as numerous other operating expenses. Drill is written based upon the number of students that have turned in deposits. The initial deposit of $150 goes directly to the arranger/drill writers and thus cannot be refunded if a student elects to drop out. Our drill writers will charge a hefty fee to re-organize drill for students that have dropped out. The fee is payable in four installments due on April 5; June 3; August 12; and October 7. ***Money should NEVER be a reason to not join marching band. If there is a financial situation or if you have any questions or need to discuss other payment options, feel free to contact Mr. Proctor [email protected] or 301-840-4591. Rehearsal Schedule All Marching Band rehearsals will be after school. Days and times of our rehearsals will not be determined until the fall sports schedule is set in early August. Most weeks, the marching band rehearses two days per week (unlike sports that rehearse every day after school). Rehearsal times are typically 2:45-4:45pm. Performances The QO Marching Band performs at all Home Varsity Football games (Friday nights). Game time is 6:30pm with students reporting at 5:00pm. Our marching band also will be competing in 3-4 US Bands competitions this season. These competitions are on Saturdays throughout the season. In past seasons, the marching band has performed at great venues such as Raven’s Stadium, the US Naval Academy Stadium, Hershey Park and the Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, FL. The QO Pep Band is a smaller group of marching band members that attend varsity football away games. This is a volunteer (optional) group. Students can choose to go to all away games, only a few or none.

Who can be in marching band? Anyone!!! Unlike sports, there is no cut – if you are interested and are willing to commit to our schedule - then we have a spot for you! Anyone that plays a band instrument and that is enrolled in a band class at Quince Orchard may participate. All other students may have the opportunity to join via pit (percussion front group that plays xylophone, marimba, and accessory percussion) or the QO color guard. The color guard is a group of performer-athletes that perform dance and choreography along with the band utilizing various pieces of equipment such as flags, rifles, sabers, and air blades. (Colorguard students do not have to be enrolled in a band class). Do I have to audition? No. No formal auditions are held for woodwind, brass and percussion students. If you are interested, we can find a spot for you! Percussion players will participate in a part placement process to determine which instrument is best. How do I join the marching band? Woodwind, brass and percussion players will receive information on how to join from Mr. Proctor or their middle school band director. Information is usually mailed home as well. If you want to join the marching band, we will find a spot for you!!! All you have to do is complete the forms and turn in your band fee deposit. Can I play a fall sport and participate in marching band?

Unfortunately - No. Fall sports (football, field hockey, cross country, golf, soccer, girls’ tennis, girls’ volleyball, cheerleading and poms) all have schedules that conflict with marching band. But many of our marching band students participate in winter and spring sports such as basketball, indoor track, wrestling, swimming, baseball, softball, boys’ tennis, track, and boys’/coed volleyball. What are the benefits of being in marching band? Marching band provides lots of benefits including physical, mental and social. Marching band is a physical activity; the ability to play an instrument or perform guard work and march at the same time is a great cardiovascular activity. Marching band takes discipline. Students learn responsibility, commitment and teamwork throughout the marching band season. All students can expect to create and maintain life long relationships with other band members. Marching band is a great way to start your high school life; before the first day of school, students will know school grounds, staff and students; over 100 people before the first day of school! What is the after-school practice/rehearsal schedule?

Marching band rehearses two days a week (sports practice is every day after school). A full detailed rehearsal schedule will be published later in the summer. Colorguard rehearses after school three days a week. Two of these days are with the marching band and the remaining day is used as a sectional. All three rehearsal dates are mandatory, this still leaves two days of your school week free!

What happens at band camp? Band camp is extremely important for a successful marching band season. We take this time to teach the fundamentals of marching and playing. We also learn the drill for our pre-game and half-time show. Our first performance of the season/school year is during the second week of school and band camp is crucial for us to be ready for this performance. Does the marching band have a website? Yes!!! The marching band has lots of information on its site. The URL is http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/qohs/departments/music/marchingband What’s so unique about the QOHS marching band? The QO Marching Band is one of only a small handful of MCPS high school bands that actually compete. Our marching band has been successfully competing for over 10 years and has won two state championships in the past six years. Our marching band has also been spotlighted in area newspaper and television features. When and where does the marching band perform?

Marching band performs at all home varsity football games. Marching band also performs in the Gaithersburg Labor Day parade and several competitions throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. In years past, the marching band has performed at great venues such as Hershey Park, Naval Academy Stadium, Ravens Stadium, the Champs Sports Bowl and at the Walt Disney World Resort Magic Music Days Festival. Why does marching band need money? It takes over $60,000 to run our marching band program. Our budget covers music, instructional staff, and equipment as well as transportation costs to several events. Students pay a membership fee of $500 to support our budget. Community donations and support make up the difference. Many after school activities have similar costs for sporting equipment, warm-up uniforms, etc. ***Money should NEVER be a reason to not join marching band. Other financial arrangements are available – please contact Mr. Proctor for more information/assistance. Where can I get more information? Check the marching band website at: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/qohs/departments/music/marchingband or call the music office (Mr. Proctor) at 301-840-4591. You can also email Mr. Proctor, Director of Bands at [email protected] And don’t forget to join the QO Marching Band yahoogroup – just send a blank email to [email protected] or check out the website and join from there.
