Tuesdayrsquos May 6th election includes a Permanent Improvement RENEWAL Levy
Contrary to some rumors circulating the Board of Education is not asking for money
to bulldoze buildings and construct new schools This PI funding pays for property
assets or improvements with an estimated life or usefulness of five years or more
This is not to be confused with a bond issue Tuesdayrsquos ballot issue is to renew
the Permanent Improvement Levy that provides the district with critical funding for
expenses such as maintenance security upgrades curriculum updates and buses
This money cannot be used for salaries and benefits If you have questions please
call the board office This levy is for ZERO new taxes

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Miami Valley Career Technology Center(MVCTC) student Logan Lafferty for his top finish at the 2014 SkillsUSA Ohio State Conference HisMVCTC Quiz Bowl Team earned the Gold Medal The conference gathered nearly 3000 people from career technical programs throughout Ohio The SKillsUSA Ohio championship consists of 81 Technical and Leadership contests Participants complete a project in their area of technical training within a specified time while being scored by a panel of judges Logan an ROTC student and his teammates now advance to national competition Good Luck

A group of Tippecanoe students earned top honors in a poetry contest sponsored by Piqua Public Library Nevin Coppock student Lydia Zweizig won 1st place in the grades K-3 category for her poem called Dump My Pump (living w Type 1 Diabetes) Broadway Elementary student Matthew Coty earned second place in that category for his poem Earth is the name In the Grades 4 to 6 category LT Ball student Anna Dearth earned 2nd place with her poem Dolphins Lt Ball student Karleigh Sorah won third place for her poem Spring Break Tippecanoe Middle School student Kyle Mains won third place in the Grades 7 to 9 category for his poem My Dog is Yellow

Broadwayrsquos Students of the Month
Broadway Elementary teachers think these students have great willpower The second and third graders were named Students of the Month for exhibiting this positive character trait THS Quiz Team 2013-14 The THS Quiz Team traveled to Pittsburgh Philadelphia and Washington DC to compete at the National History Bowl and Bee They beat teams from New York Florida and as far away as Hawaii Those who participated are Joshua Bellas Thomas Gaier Kase Vyas Alex Prentice Evan Thomas Erin Ricketts Thomas Chaney Laurel Spangler Alisha Bhagwat Nathan Mahaney and Faithe Walker The JV team made the playoffs and the varsity team lost a close match to finish one game out of the playoff round Laurel Spangler competed in the National History Bee on Sunday as an individual player and placed 51st out of 184 students
THS Envirothon Team A team of five students from Tippecanoe High School participated in the Area IV Envirothon The team sponsored by Miami County Soil and Water is extremely appreciative of the guidance provided by Linda Raterman The competition tested students in areas such as forestry aquatics wildlife soil and environmental issues Tippecanoersquos Envirothon Team placed in the top half out of all teams participating (30th out of 83) Most importantly the students enjoyed the experience and were inspired to learn more about the environment and environmental issues Teachers Scott Snyder is pictured with his students Landen Stafford Nathan Schall Miu Tanaka Abby Crabill and Hannah Cop
History Lessons Nevin Coppock first graders enjoyed a lively history lesson at Carillon Park Historical Park The field trip immersed students in the regionrsquos rich pioneer history with costumed interpreters and visits to some of the parkrsquos 25 historical buildings One stop included the schoolhouse The Park is also home to the Deeds Carillon one of Daytonrsquos best-known landmarks and the largest carillon in Ohio Thank you Tipp City Area Community Foundations for making this learning experience possible

Epic Fight for an Epic Cure LT Ballrsquos 4th and 5th grade students are raising funds for the annual Relay for Life With their teachers
staff and families the 2014 goal is to raise over $14000 to donate to this great cause They are seeking

2014-2015 School Year Bus Transportation Requests
The DEADLINE for daycarebabysitter school bus transportation requests is August 8 2014 The district cannot accept late requests The transportation department will resume taking requests on September 8 2014
At the end of each school year studentsrsquo transportation needs are put back to their home address Tipp City Schools cannot assume that students will utilize the same daycare provider as in the previous school year PARENTSGUARDIANS MUST SUBMIT A WRITTEN REQUEST TO THE BUILDING OFFICE OF THE SCHOOL THE STUDENT ATTENDS OR THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT AT THE BOARD OF EDUCATION BUILDING THE REQUEST MUST INCLUDE

GET STRONGER FASTER HEALTHIER The UVMC Center for Sports Medicine will offer its sports enhancement programs Explosive Speed and Power (ESP) for high school and collegiate level athletes this summer The center also will offer the ESP Junior a program tailored for junior high athletes and the Sportsmetrics a knee injury reduction program designed for female athletes ESP is for athletes who want to improve speed agility vertical jump strength power flexibility and confidence Both ESP programs are held at Tippecanoe High School beginning June 9 The Sportsmetrics program is held at Troy Junior High School This comprehensive training program specifically designed for female athletes is scientifically proven to reduce knee injuries and improve performance for sports that involve pivoting cutting or jumping All programs are six weeks long Registration is required To register online visit UVMCcomESP or UVMCcomSportsmetrics A brochure is available at httpwwwtippcityschoolscomDomain170

The Issue
The issue on the May 6 2014 ballot is a renewal of a levy passed in 2008
Renewal of this levy will result in a ZERO new taxes
The millage rate for this renewal level is 20 mills
A taxpayer with a property valuation of $100000 pays $54 annually
The levy is for a period of five years
The Facts
During the 2013-2014 school year the district spent approximately $742000 from the permanent improvement fund for
Science Curriculum $229000 Technology $123000 School Bus $ 89500 Roof Projects $ 77000 Track Payment $ 76000 Copier Lease $ 37000
Dow St Assessment $36000 Van $22000 Classroom Furniture $12000 Concrete Repair $12000 Hot Water Line $10000
The Funding
ldquoPermanent improvementrdquo means any property asset or improvement with an estimated life or usefulness of five years or more
The current levy expires December 31 2014
The levy brings in approximately $700000 a year Of that $385000 is dedicated to purchasing up-to-date curriculum resources and upgrading technology
The levy supplies the Permanent Improvement Fund that pays for projects to protect the districtrsquos capital investments
Among the projects the fund pays for are updates to buildings energy efficiency buses safety and security
Capital expenditures for school property and assets include roof repairs parking lot paving and bus maintenance
PI money is not used for salaries or benefits for teachers or other district employees
The proceeds from the permanent improvement levy are not used for the districts operating expenses
The district uses PI money for the following
Building maintenance such as replacement of roofs plumbing electrical and HVAC systems
Sidewalk and parking lot maintenance and repairs
Salt spreading equipment for parking lots and sidewalks
Security and safety equipment district-wide
Technology for classrooms and students
Textbooks amp curriculum resources
Replacement of classroom furniture
Bus maintenance equipment radio upgrade and replacement of aging vehicles
What happens if the renewal levy fails
Funding for maintenance expenses and major capital purchases will be
eliminated
Facility and grounds repairs will be compromised
Technology purchases will be curtailed
Replacement of textbooks for curriculum will be deferred
Maintenance and replacement of the aging bus fleet will be jeopardized
Failure to maintain our buildings grounds equipment and bus fleet will result in long-term

Broadway Elementary teachers think these students have great willpower The second and third graders were named Students of the Month for exhibiting this positive character trait THS Quiz Team 2013-14 The THS Quiz Team traveled to Pittsburgh Philadelphia and Washington DC to compete at the National History Bowl and Bee They beat teams from New York Florida and as far away as Hawaii Those who participated are Joshua Bellas Thomas Gaier Kase Vyas Alex Prentice Evan Thomas Erin Ricketts Thomas Chaney Laurel Spangler Alisha Bhagwat Nathan Mahaney and Faithe Walker The JV team made the playoffs and the varsity team lost a close match to finish one game out of the playoff round Laurel Spangler competed in the National History Bee on Sunday as an individual player and placed 51st out of 184 students
THS Envirothon Team A team of five students from Tippecanoe High School participated in the Area IV Envirothon The team sponsored by Miami County Soil and Water is extremely appreciative of the guidance provided by Linda Raterman The competition tested students in areas such as forestry aquatics wildlife soil and environmental issues Tippecanoersquos Envirothon Team placed in the top half out of all teams participating (30th out of 83) Most importantly the students enjoyed the experience and were inspired to learn more about the environment and environmental issues Teachers Scott Snyder is pictured with his students Landen Stafford Nathan Schall Miu Tanaka Abby Crabill and Hannah Cop

Dow St Assessment $36000 Van $22000 Classroom Furniture $12000 Concrete Repair $12000 Hot Water Line $10000
The Funding
ldquoPermanent improvementrdquo means any property asset or improvement with an estimated life or usefulness of five years or more
The current levy expires December 31 2014
The levy brings in approximately $700000 a year Of that $385000 is dedicated to purchasing up-to-date curriculum resources and upgrading technology
The levy supplies the Permanent Improvement Fund that pays for projects to protect the districtrsquos capital investments
Among the projects the fund pays for are updates to buildings energy efficiency buses safety and security
Capital expenditures for school property and assets include roof repairs parking lot paving and bus maintenance
