The North Carolina faithful long have referred to CarmichaelAuditorium as Blue Heaven and the name certainly fits. Locatedamong the tall pine trees at the heart of the North Carolina cam-pus, Carmichael has been home to the gymnastics programsince it reached NCAA status in 1982.

The auditorium is named for the late William D. CarmichaelJr., a highly popular figure on campus who served as the univer-sity’s comptroller, then as its vice-president. Prior to the 1976-77season, 1,200 seats were added to bring historic Carmichael toits present capacity of 8,010.

The gymnastics office is housed in Carmichael, steps from thecompetition floor. The facility also serves as home to thewomen’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams, as well ashousing offices for many other coaches in UNC’s highly-suc-cessful Olympic Sports programs.

The Carolina men’s basketball program called Carmichaelhome from 1965 until its move to the Dean E. Smith Center mid-way through the 1985-86 season. Under coach Dean Smith, theTar Heels compiled a home record of 169-20 at Carmichael.

CAROLINA GYMNASTICS: GENERAL INFORMATION

After missing a team national bid by .05points in 2003, .025 points in 2004, and 1.075points in 2005, the North Carolina gymnasticsteam has renewed its focus and has its sightsset on making 2006 a historical year. That willhappen if the team can earn the program’s firstteam bid to the NCAA Championships.

Last year, Carolina came tantalizingly closefor the third consecutive season. However, thetinge of disappointment did not overshadowwhat was otherwise and outstanding season. In 2005, Carolina won its second EastAtlantic Gymnastics LeagueChampionship and placed third at theNCAA Regional Championships for thethird year in a row. The competitiveseason concluded with CourtneyBumpers successfully defending her2004 national floor exercise title withher ninth career 10.0. Academically,Carolina again served as a benchmarkprogram as every member of the squadearned EAGL All-Academic honors. The team’s overall grade point averagewas its highest in the program’s historyand was second in the nation.

Ranked 22nd in the nation in the2006 preseason poll, Carolina has oneobjective clearly defined in their minds: cap-turing a team bid to the NCAA GymnasticsChampionships.

Leading the Tar Heels into competition aretwo of the most experienced NCAA gymnastsin Carolina history, Bumpers and fellow seniorMikel Hester. Bumpers, a three-time All-America, and Hester, a three time NCAAregional all-around competitor, will share theleadership role with senior Cecilia Liu.

“The seniors are focused on making thisanother great year for the team,” says Galvin.“It would be a great conclusion to their colle-giate careers if we make it to the champi-onships as a team. While I want a nationalsqualification for the entire team, I especiallywant it for the three seniors, because they’vealmost made it three years in a row. I wantthem to finish together at the NCAA champi-onships.”

The passion and experience of the seniorclass are two of the keys to the Tar Heels’ suc-cess this year.

“We lost some very important people fromlast year,” says Galvin, who must replacestarters Olivia Trusty, Elisabeth Alsop andAmy Williams. “Those graduated seniors werehere during the four most successful years inUNC history. Their absences are greatly felt, but I’m confident the team will do its best tomake up for the loss with their hard work anddedication.”

Galvin, who enters his 25th year atCarolina, predicts the team’s adjustment to thelack of depth will be one of the biggest chal-lenges the team will have to face. He is confi-dent the returning letterwinners, which include

such strong competitors as juniors ChristineRobella and Courtney Turco, and sophomoresShawna Kelly and Alice Xu will be up to thetask. Add to that an outstanding freshmanclass that includes Rachel Schneider andJennifer Valby and the Tar Heels have a solidnucleus entering 2006.

Making the new season even more challeng-ing will be what Galvin calls “the toughestschedule a Tar Heel team has had to face inmany years.” In addition to meets against SEC

powerhouses, Florida, Arkansas, andKentucky, Carolina will also face tough com-petition in the East Atlantic GymnasticsLeague. NC State, Maryland, GeorgeWashington, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, NewHampshire, and Rutgers all appear to haveimproved this season, and Galvin believes thatany team is capable of winning this year’sEAGL Championship.

VAULTLike last season, vault is an

event where Carolina lacks depth. There are just seven vaulters onthe team this year. Bumpers,Robella, Hester, Turco andShawna Kelly all competed lastyear and should be consistent per-formers once again in 2006. Newto the lineup are freshmenSchneider and Valby. Valby is aformer Junior Olympic championon vault and is expected to be oneof the stronger vaulters on theteam.

“Christine and Courtney aretwo of the most impressivevaulters ever to compete forCarolina, and they both lookstronger than they did last year,”says Galvin.

Hester, who underwent shoul-der surgery during the post sea-son last spring, is progressingwell. “Because of our lack ofdepth, we really need Mikel onvault, and I’m confident that she

will be able to compete there,” Galvin says.Valby has been focusing on the Yurchenco

full and Yurchenco 1 1/2 twist vaults.Likewise, Kelly and Schneider are also train-ing Yurchenco vaults. Bumpers will performthe same Phelps vault she did last year, whichalready has a 10.0 start value. She also hasbeen training a few new vaults which may beused as the season evolves. Hester, Robella, and Turco all perform front handspring frontflip vaults. Robella is one of the few college

gymnasts capable of performing afront handspring front flip vault with

a full twist in layout position.

UNEVEN BARSThe loss of two of the programs top

competitors, Alsop and Trusty, willrequire continued improvement on theuneven bars by the returning gym-nasts. Bumpers, Hester, Liu, Robella,Kelly, Claire Smith and Alice Xu allreturn with experience on bars fromlast season.

“As a team, we are focused on con-tinuing to improve our execution,”says Galvin. “Smith and Kelly in par-ticular have shown strong signs of

improvement during the preseason.” New to the lineup are freshmen Valby and

Schneider. Schneider is a former JuniorOlympic champion on the uneven bars. Shehas exceptional height on her release move andhas a dynamic performance style on the event. She and Valby both show signs that they cancontribute significantly on the uneven bars.

“It will be interesting to see how our unevenbars lineup progresses,” Galvin says. “It’s

Senior leadership from Cecilia Liu and Courtney Bumpers will be akey factor for success this season.

“Because of the type of people we have on thisteam, I see tremendous potential for this to be a fan-tastic year,” Galvin continues. “We have a group withgreat personalities. The ladies work well together, and they have already shown a strong commitment tothe team objectives and to each other. Regardless ofwhether we achieve the goal of qualifying the entireteam to the national championships, it is the commit-ment they make to one another and the way they helpeach other grow, that will be the ultimate measure oftheir success.” – Head Coach Derek Galvin

going to be extremely important that we estab-lish a group of consistent performers early inthe season.”

BALANCE BEAMBalance beam could be one of the stronger

events for the Tar Heels in 2006. Bumpersreturns as the team’s top beam performer. Shefinished first on beam at five meets last season, and finished second on the event at the EAGLChampionships. Hester, who has a strong,well-executed routine, also will represent thesenior class on the event. Robella, who wasthe EAGL Gymnast of the Week twice lastseason, should be again one of the Tar Heels’top beam competitors.

From the junior class, Turco, Smith andMiranda Ross provide needed depth. In addi-tion, Xu, Kelly, and Angela Lauten are pre-pared to play a role in the rotation.

“Last year, Alice grew more proficient inthe event as the season progressed. Andalready this season she, Shawna and Angelahave all shown they are eager to step into thebalance beam lineup and provide strong per-formances,” says Galvin.

Both freshmen have also shown great poten-tial and strength on the balance beam and areexpected to compete for a spot in the lineup.

“Our focus on beam in the fall has been ondeveloping creative elements and combinationsthat enhance the artistic quality of our rou-tines,” explains Galvin. “The desire is to haveunique beam routines that stand out for theirartistry.”

In an effort to achieve this outcome, the TarHeels have added volunteer coach ShirleyTranquill to the staff. Tranquill has an impres-sive gymnastics resume as both a coach and a

judge. Her efforts with theteam have been focused ondeveloping creative and uniqueelements on both balance beamand floor exercise.

“I’ve known Shirley formany years as a judge and cho-reographer, and I have atremendous respect for all thatshe has given to this sport,”says Galvin. “Penny and I aredelighted that she has beenwilling to share her creativetalent and knowledge with ourteam. I’m confident she willhave a great influence on theteam.

FLOOR EXERCISEFloor exercise should again

prove to be the Tar Heels’strongest event in 2006. Thanksto outstanding performancesfrom Bumpers, Hester andRobella, floor exercise was theteam’s best event in 2005. Onfloor exercise last year,

Bumpers led the Tar Heels by capturing theevent title at the EAGL championships, NCAARegional Championships and the NCAAChampionships.

Robella’s impressive tumbling skills andHester’s exceptional execution and perform-ance qualities are tremendous assets to theteam on this event. Valby, a former JuniorOlympic champion on the event is also expect-ed to have a significant impact and be one ofthe top performers on floor.

The remaining two spots in the floor exer-cise lineup will be up for grabs between Turco,Kelly, Xu, Smith, Ross, Lauten and Schneider.Turco gained valuable competitive experiencelast year and has shown steady progress duringthe preseason.

One of the main differences in the floorexercise this year is the addition of more chal-lenging front tumbling combinations. Achange in the judges’ code of points requiresthe use of more difficult forward tumbling tosatisfy the bonus element requirements.According to Galvin, all seven gymnasts haveshown great improvement and are capable ofearning a spot in the lineup.

Because Carolina has a smaller roster thisseason, each gymnast has received more indi-vidualized attention in the preseason, especial-ly on floor exercise. New music and choreog-raphy has been added to the majority of theroutines. The team began choreography earlierin the season and the coaching staff hopes thischange will result in a quicker display of con-sistency and proficiency in the event.

The 2006 season opens on Thursday, Jan. 12at the George Washington Invitational. The

Tar Heels are optimistic about the upcomingseason and excited about a schedule thatincludes five home meets.

“In addition to our home meets, we alsocompete at the Wolfpack Invitational inRaleigh,” says Galvin. “With six local meets, half of our competitions are going to be aneasy drive for our local fans and supporters.Gymnastics fans will have more opportunitiesthan in any previous year to come see our teamand cheer them on.”

“Because of the type of people we have onthis team, I see tremendous potential for this tobe a fantastic year,” Galvin continues. “Wehave a group with great personalities. Theladies work well together, and they havealready shown a strong commitment to theteam objectives and to each other. Regardlessof whether we achieve the goal of qualifyingthe entire team to the national championships,it is the commitment they make to one anotherand the way they help each other grow, thatwill be the ultimate measure of their success.”

Christine Robella returns as one of Carolina’s top competitors.

Senior Mikel Hester brings valuable experienceand consistency to the 2006 team.

nationals. Being at nationals is an experience that I would love to sharewith my teammates and I think that qualifying is a realistic goal for theteam. Aside from team goals, I stay motivated because I realize thatthere is always something to improve upon, no matter what the score is.No one in the sport of gymnastics remains stagnant and none of mycompetitors are going to sit around and just let me win another nationaltitle next year.

What did you work on in the off season, and what are your goals inyour final season?Consistency, sticking landings, and good form are what the team hasfocused on in offseason, mainly because it is these three things that willhelp us get to nationals, our goal for the season.

AA CCOONNVVEERRSSAATTIIOONN WWIITTHH TTWWOO--TTIIMMEE FFLLOOOORR EEXXEERRCCIISSEE

NNAATTIIOONNAALL CCHHAAMMPPIIOONN CCOOUURRTTNNEEYY BBUUMMPPEERRSSCourtney Bumpers entered the 2005 NCAA GymnasticsChampionships ranked 68th nationally on floor exercise and finishedthe meet with her second career national title with a 10.0. Bumpers isthe first gymnast in the history of the North Carolina program toadvance to the individual event finals at nationals and the only EastAtlantic Gymnastics League gymnast to win a national title.

What were your feelings entering the NCAAs? Did you think you hada chance to successfully defend your title?Going into nationals I was more focused on having fun and staying inthe moment than I was about winning the title again. I knew that if I hitmy routines I could defend my title, but that is not what I was thinkingabout going into the competition. What I wanted to gain from nationalslast year, was more knowledge on how I could help my team qualify tonationals the following year.

How was your mindset compared to the previous year? Did you feelmore or less pressure?I actually felt more pressure all the way up until postseason competi-tions. During the postseason, I became more focused on thinking aboutwhat I had to do to succeed at accomplishing my goals. Particularly atnationals, my mindset changed from trying to win, to having fun andperforming for the crowd. This change in mindset and attitude helpedme to feel more prepared when I stepped onto the floor.

Right before your routine, what were you thinking and feeling? While I was focused on my routine and the things that I needed to do inorder to perform my routine well, I was mainly thinking about havingfun and performing for the crowd.

After you had finished, did you know that you had probably won? Didyou expect a perfect 10.0?Immediately after I finished my routine and stepped off of the floor, Idid not know that I won, and I definitely did not think I would get a 10.I knew I had done a good routine but I was not expecting a 10. I wasjust happy with the way that I performed. When the crowd startedchanting, ‘10, 10, 10,’ I realized that it was possible that I might score a10. I was still surprised though to see that score flash across the score-board.

How did winning the second time compare to the first? Both times were equally as satisfying but they were also very different. The first time was exciting because it was the first time I had won anational collegiate title and because winning a national title on the floorexercise was one of my goals for the year. The second time was satis-fying because I had struggled all season to find my rhythm in competi-tion and I finally found it at nationals.

As a freshman, did you believe it was possible to win two nationalchampionships?I definitely believed it was possible, but I'm not sure I actually thoughtit would happen. Winning a national championship was a goal I had asa freshman, but I didn't think that it would happen as early in my athlet-ic career as it did.

CAROLINA GYMNASTICS: HEAD COACH DEREK GALVIN

• 2005 EAGL Coach of Year• 2004 NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year• 2004 EAGL Coach of Year• 2003 NCAA Southeast Region Co-Coach of Year• 2002 NCAA Southeast Region Coach of Year• 2002 EAGL Coach of Year

Derek Galvin enters his 25th year coaching the Carolina gymnasticsteam and the Tar Heels’ recent successes continue to multiply. While theteam has narrowly missed its elusive goal of competing in the nationalchampionships, it has come within one place of advancing from region-als to nationals in three successive years. In 2004, the team came theclosest it has ever come, placing third at the Southeast Regional by .025points after finishing behind the necessary second-place spot in 2003 by.05 points.

While the team inches toward its goal of making it to nationals, jun-ior Courtney Bumpers has achieved the ultimate individual performance- winning floor exercise at the 2005 national championships with a per-fect score. In 2004, Bumpers tied for first on the same event, and in2003, the three-time All-America placed fourth on balance beam.

Galvin was named the 2005 EAGL Coach of the Year for the fourthtime in six years as he guided his team to a regular season record of 14-4-1 and its second EAGL Championship in four years. Carolina finishedthe year ranked 23rd in the country after tying for third place at region-als.

In 2004, the Tar Heels arguably had the best year in school history.Galvin was named the NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year forthe third straight season after guiding the team to a 22-1 record and asecond place finish in the EAGL Championships. Galvin led the team toa regional appearance for the ninth time in hiscareer, and the .955 winning percentage in2004 was the highest in school history.

Carolina’s 2004 season was a record-breaking year in team and individual resultswith the Tar Heels setting a team record onevery event except balance beam and scoringabove a 197.0 in four meets. Bumpers, whoearned the program's third-ever 10.0 in 2003,turned in seven perfect scores on floor exer-cise and surpassed her previous school recordon the vault and in the all-around competi-tion. She has the school's highest all-aroundtotal with a 39.725 and the highest vaultscore with a 9.975. Olivia Trusty set a recordon uneven bars with a score of 9.95.

In addition to his recent accolades, Galvinhas a history of success at Carolina. In hisfirst year as head coach in 1982, he guidedthe Tar Heels to a fourth place finish at theSoutheast Regional. His 1985 and 1986 teamsboth finished third at the meet after placingfirst in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Inaddition to UNC's accomplishments as ateam, Carolina has been represented every

year at NCAA regionals by at least one individual gymnast. Three years ago, Bumpers and junior Anna Wilson were the first

Carolina gymnasts since 1986 to qualify for the NCAA national champi-onships as individuals. Bumpers recorded the then-highest finish ever ofany ACC or EAGL gymnast with her fourth place finish on the balancebeam in the final round before achieving her championship status in thenext two years on floor exercise.

Galvin’s teams have historically excelled both in the gymnasticsarena and in the academic environment, and 2005 was one of the bestyears yet. Seniors Amy Williams and Elisabeth Alsop were inducted intoPhi Beta Kappa, a prestigious national honor fraternity, and seniorOlivia Trusty was awarded the ACC Weaver-James-CorriganPostgraduate Scholarship. For the first time in school history, everymember of the 2005 team was named to the EAGL All-Academic Team.

In the last 20 years, gymnasts coached by Galvin have been chosenfor the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches’ ScholasticAll-America Gymnastics Team 92 times. In 2005, Bumpers, ElisabethAlsop, Stacey Geare, Mikel Hester, Miranda Ross, Claire Smith,Morgan Stanley, Trusty, Courtney Turco, Williams and Alice Xu wereawarded the honor.

Natalie Halbach, a 2003 graduate, was the first female student-ath-lete in the Atlantic Coast Conference to receive the Walter ByersPostgraduate Scholarship, the most prestigious academic award given bythe NCAA. Halbach was also the second Carolina gymnast to be hon-ored as a GTE Academic All-America, following in the footsteps of for-mer Tar Heel Stacy Kaplan.

Galvin has been involved in gymnastics in various capacitiesthroughout his life. He was a member of the Carolina men's team beforethe discontinuation of the program in 1974. Staying involved in thesport, he spent four years coaching at Gymdancetics, a training centerestablished by Fred Sanders, former coach of the Carolina men's team.Under Galvin's guidance, team members dominated state competitionand advanced to the United States Gymnastics Federation champi-onships.

In 1978, he became director and head coach of the TriadGymnastics Academy. The following year he accepted an administrativeposition with the research and consulting firm of Syllogistics, Inc., butremained active in area gymnastics. His first season as head coach ofthe Tar Heels was in 1982.

Galvin has made contributions to many other areas of the gymnasticscommunity. In 1982, he was named to theNCAA Southeast Region AdvisoryCommittee and served as committee chair-man for several years, including the 2004season. He was the gymnastics site coordina-tor for the 1987 United States OlympicFestival in Chapel Hill. He is an active mem-ber of the NACGC and has served as a clini-cian of several USAG and NCAA Y.E.S.clinics.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Galvinmoved to Arlington, Va., with his familywhen he was 10 years old. He competed ontwo state championship gymnastics teamsunder coach Jesse Meeks at Yorktown HighSchool and graduated from Carolina with apsychology degree in 1976. Galvin and hiswife, Debra, have two children. Both gradu-ated from college in May 2003 - their son,Derek Sean, from UNC and their daughter,Ryan, from the University of Virginia.

CAROLINA GYMNASTICS: TAR HEEL EXCELLENCE

PAGE 20: 2006 CAROLINA GYMNASTICS MEDIA GUIDE

Student-Athlete Services at the University of North Carolina encompasses threeareas that play an integral part in the collegiate experience of every UNC student-athlete. Those three areas are Academic Development, Student-AthleteDevelopment and Leadership Development.

• ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENTThe Academic Support Program is the main service utilized in advancing UNC

student-athletes to graduation. The program assists student-athletes in exploringtheir interests and abilities, enjoying a broad educational experience, and reachingor exceeding their academic goals. “Our young people are students first and ath-letes second and that will always be the case at the University,” says UNC Directorof Athletics Dick Baddour. “That is a credit to our coaches, administrators and sup-port staff, but most of all, our student-athletes. Their accomplishments in the class-room are very impressive.”

During the 2004-05 academic year, 297 Carolina student-athletes made theACC Academic Honor Roll, which requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for

the year. In the fall of 2004, 176 student-athletes made the Dean's List, and 163 didso in the spring of 2005.

The Academic Support Program is housed primarily in the Pope AcademicSupport Center, which is equipped with study facilities, tutorial rooms, a com-

puter lab, a 128-seat auditorium, counselors' offices, and state-of-the-art video andcomputer equipment. At the center, students meet with staff to discuss course selec-tion, major and career exploration, academic progress and academic eligibility.

The Academic Support Program helps freshmen transition from high school tocollege through a variety of academic programs such as academic counseling, indi-vidual tutoring, group review sessions and supplemental instruction.

A member of each team serves as the Academic Team Captain, providing astrong link between the Academic Support Program and the other student-athleteson the squad. The Academic Team Captains for women’s gymnastics for 2005-06are Cecilia Liu and Miranda Ross.

• STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENTBuilding character in UNC student-athletes is the main charge of Student-Athlete

Development. Through Carolina Outreach, Tar Heels are involved in a variety of projects and

organizations on campus and in the community. The UNC Department of Athleticshas partnered with Gatorade and the UNC School of Public Health for a nationalpilot program called Get Kids in Action, in which Tar Heel student-athletes visitlocal elementary schools to encourage children to exercise. The Carolina Dreamsprogram allows young patients at UNC Children's Hospitals to attend Tar Heelsporting events with UNC student-athletes. Other recent activities have includedbuilding a house with Habitat for Humanity, cooking meals at Ronald McDonaldHouse and cleaning up the roadways through the Adopt-a-Highway program.

Student-Athlete Development also seeks to develop student-athletes on a per-sonal level through a variety of speakers who address issues like nutrition, gam-bling, relationship communication and substance use. Career Development helpsUNC student-athletes look beyond college with resources such as career counsel-ing and workshops on resume writing and interviewing skills.

• LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENTThe primary outlet for Leadership Development is the Carolina Leadership

Academy, started at UNC in 2004. As the nation's premier leadership developmentprogram in collegiate athletics, the Carolina Leadership Academy develops, chal-lenges and supports student-athletes, coaches and staff in their continual quest tobecome world class leaders in athletics, academics and life.

The Academy consists of three programs:

CREED ProgramLeadership training begins in the freshman year. All leadership begins with per-

sonal leadership, therefore freshmen are taught skills to effectively lead them-selves. Training consists of monthly meetings featuring keynote speakers and smallgroup discussion. Upperclass student-athletes serve as peer mentors and discussionleaders. Special focus is on responsibility, accountability, making good choices, ethics and character building.

Rising Stars ProgramDesigned for a select group of "high potential" sophomores and juniors, the pro-

gram provides future leaders with insights, strategies and skills necessary tobecome effective leaders. The program includes monthly meetings, interactiveexercises and action learning experiences.

Veteran Leaders ProgramThis program is designed for team captains and veteran student-athletes. It pro-

vides advanced leadership training and support, teaches the critical skills andinsights necessary to be effective vocal leaders and provides a strong peer network.Student-athletes meet regularly to learn and reinforce leadership principles andshare successes, frustrations and lessons.
