SUPPORTING UNC GYMNASTICSThe University of North Carolina is proud of

its long-standing relationship with Nike, Inc. The two parties signed a new 10-year contract in May 2009 for Nike to continue as the exclusive supplier of athletic footwear, apparel and accessory prod-ucts. Nike will provide the athletic department with shoes, uniforms, coaching gear, balls and other equipment. Nike also gave the University $2 million for the Chancellor’s Academic Enhance-ment Fund to support faculty. This partnership has benefitted all 28 varsity sports and provided millions of dol-lars for academ-ics and student scholarships at the University.

EAST ATLANTIC GYMNASTICS LEAGUEThe East Atlantic Gymnastics League became

a reality on July 31, 1995, when eight prominent universities banded together to form a consor-tium created solely for the purpose of showcasing women’s gymnastics on the East Coast. The EAGL is currently compromised of George Washington, New Hampshire, North Carolina, NC State, Mary-land, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Towson. In August 1996, the NCAA Council accepted the EAGL as an official affiliated member of the NCAA.

Carmichael ArenaThe North Carolina faithful long have referred to Carmichael Arena as Blue Heaven and the name certainly fits. Located among the

tall pine trees at the heart of the North Carolina campus, Carmichael has been home to the gymnastics program since it reached NCAA status in 1982. Carolina recently completed a multi-million dollar facelift of Carmichael Arena, which has made it one of the top Olympic sports gymnasiums in the country.

The arena is named for the late William D. Carmichael Jr., a highly popular figure on campus who served as the university’s comptrol-ler, then as its vice-president. Prior to the 1976-77 season, 1,200 seats were added to bring historic Carmichael to its present capacity of 8,010.

The gymnastics office is housed in Carmichael, steps from the competition floor. The facility also serves as home to the women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as housing offices for many other coaches in UNC’s highly-successful Olympic Sports programs. The Carolina men’s basketball program called Carmichael home from 1965 until its move to the Dean E. Smith Center midway through the 1985-86 season. Under coach Dean Smith, the Tar Heels compiled a home record of 169-20 at Carmichael.

Carmichael Arena recently underwent a multi-million dollar

renovation.

North Carolina enters the 2014 season seek-ing a return to the top of the East Atlantic Gymnastics League. The Tar Heels have won the league title in four of the last nine seasons, and are looking for their first title since 2011. To win the league, the Tar Heels will lean on a group of student-athletes who have faced ad-versity throughout their careers and are now in position to have their best seasons.

Seniors Meredith Magjuka and Michelle Ikoma, along with junior Kristin Aloi, will serve as team captains. All three have missed at least one season with an injury. Magjuka redshirted her freshman season with a back injury, Ikoma missed the 2011 season with an Achilles’ tear and Aloi missed the 2013 campaign with an foot injury. Magjuka is a consistent performer and will lead off UNC’s balance beam squad. Ikoma is a fiery leader who is training to be an all-arounder this year. And Aloi, who is in UNC’s School of Pharmacy after graduating early last year, could also be one of the team’s top all-arounders.

Acacia Cosentino also missed the 2013 sea-son with a foot injury that occurred just days prior to the first meet of the year. After red-shirting last year, her return will certainly help the Tar Heels who have just 12 athletes on the team. Emily Cornwell, who competed in each of the last three seasons, will serve as a student assistant coach in her final season.

Junior Haley Watts was one of the team’s top performers last year and posted all-around scores of 39.000 or higher in five meets, includ-ing the NCAA Morgantown Regional. The final member of the junior class is Janell Sargent, a beam specialist who has produced some of the best scores in school history.

The sophomore class includes Lexi Cappalli, Josselyn Mackey and Sarah Peterson. Cappalli had several bright moments last year competing primarily on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. Mackey was in every balance beam lineup a year ago and was a regular in the vault and uneven bars rotations. Peterson came on strong and was always in the vault and floor lineups. The progression of the sophomore class will go a long was in determining the team’s fortunes.

Carolina welcomes three freshmen, including a pair of out-of-state student-athletes in Megan Marenghi of Plano, Texas, and Christina Pheil of St. Pe-tersburg, Fla. Margaret Brown joined the team as a walk-on from Waxhaw, N.C. All three will be counted on to contribute immediately with Marenghi competing on uneven bars and balance beam and Pheil challenging in the all-around. Brown will compete for the vault and floor lineup.

With preseason training complete, head coach Derek Galvin sat down for a question and answer session with GoHeels.com. Galvin, the only NCAA gymnastics coach in UNC history, is entering his 33rd season.

GoHeels.com: You lost a pair of quality performers last year in Elizabeth Durkac and Maura Masatsugu. How will they be replaced and what do you expect from this season class?

Galvin: Elizabeth and Maura were great competitors for us. Elizabeth was such a consistent performer over her career and it was great for her, and for our team, when she was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Year at the league championships in Chapel Hill. She will be difficult to replace, but we have several people who can step up. Maura Masatsugu was a great competitor and a top performer in our beam lineup.

The senior class will be led by Meredith Magjuka and Michelle Ikoma. Both come back with quite a bit of experience. They competed significantly for us last year on the balance beam and floor exercise lineup and both can help us in other events as well.

I believe both have improved this year. Mi-chelle has improved significantly and she is looking really strong on all four events.

Meredith is looking strong on floor exercise and balance beam. We’ve back off on her vault-ing a little because of an irritation in her elbow. We don’t want to jeopardize her abilities in the other events.

Kristin Aloi will be back this year after injur-ing her foot and sitting out last year while re-covering. She’s in graduate school in Pharmacy after finishing up her psychology degree in three years. Kristin is balancing graduate school and team training. She’s done well with that, but it’s a big challenge just in terms of time commitment and graduate school is more demanding. She’s done well in the preseason on all four events.

All three of those ladies will serve as our captains.

GoHeels.com: You also return Acacia Cosen-tino to the lineup this year and she will be enter-ing her fourth year in Chapel Hill. What are your expectations for her?

Galvin: We’re excited to have her back competing after injuring her Achilles’ last year. She’s in her fourth year on the team, but has two years of eligibility remaining. She’s performed well on bars in the preseason and she’s coming along on floor. Floor will be more of a work in progress because of the foot injury. We’re building her tumbling back up, and she has trained well and is improving.

GoHeels.com: Last season, Haley Watts took the next step forward in her progression and became one of your top all-arounders along with Durkac. Are you expecting a similar progression this year?

Galvin: Haley did a very good job for us last year and we’re believe she will again be a consistent performer. We are taking care of an ankle issue and we are changing her tumbling a little bit, but she’s been looking really good on all four events. We may take it easy with her at the start of the season, es-pecially on vault, but she is our top returning all-arounder.

GoHeels.com: Gymnastics is such an interesting sport with varied skills required at each apparatus. Starting with vault, let’s discuss the four events and your thoughts on the 2014 squad.

Galvin on Vault: Vault is our event with the least amount of depth. Our top returning vaulters are Haley and Michelle. Lexi, Josselyn and Sarah were also in the lineup last year and will compete for a starting spot again. Beyond that, Christina, Kristin and Margaret will be in the mix for the final spots. We only have eight student-athletes available for this event so that’s going to put a premium on staying healthy.

I’ve been impressed with Michelle’s vaulting in preseason. She’s perform-ing better at this point than she was at the end of last season. Lexi has also shown improvement in each of the last few weeks.

We have four solid vaulters and we need six. We have to find two more ladies to step up and make the lineup.

Galvin on Uneven Bars: We’re replacing Elizabeth on that event and she was so consistent for us a year ago. Megan Marenghi of the freshman class has the strongest bar routine and Christina Pheil’s bar routine is coming along.

From the sophomore class, all three could make the bar lineup. The stron-gest in preseason has been Lexi. Sarah missed some time in preseason, but she came back well and we’re expecting her to compete for the lineup. Haley and Acacia both have competed for us in the past and I expected them to be a part of the lineup. Kristin is as strong on bars as she has been at any point of her career.

Galvin on Balance Beam: Balance beam is where we have the most depth. We lost two solid contributors in Elizabeth and Maura, but with our depth, we’re now looking for the six most con-sistent performers to step up. Among the seniors, Meredith was our leadoff person last year and we expect her to do the same this year. Michelle has made strong progress on beam.

Janell is looking stronger than she did last year and she specializes in beam. Her dismount is stronger this year and we feel she has the potential to score in the 9.9 or above range.

In the freshman class, Megan has similar scoring potential as Janell and she should make the beam lineup. Christina has a good chance along with all three sophomores - Josselyn, Sarah and Lexi

Galvin on Floor: We have a wide variety of musical styles and we have some unique routines. That is one of the things that assistant coach Amy Smith brings to our team. She’s such a creative choreographer and our routines this year will be very entertaining. They are very unique with a very broad range of music.

Michelle and Meredith have been looking very good in preseason and we expect both of them to be in the lineup. We are working on some new tum-bling passes with Haley to minimize the stress on her ankle, but we expect her to be in the lineup.

All three sophomores are improved, and if we were putting together a lineup today Christina would be the top freshman in the lineup.

GoHeels.com: Given your lack of depth on vault, what is your overall ex-pectation for this season?

Galvin: We’ve got fairly good depth on beam and floor. We don’t have as much on bars and vault and our level of proficiency doesn’t quite match what we have on floor and beam.

In looking at our scoring potential, we need to maximize what we can do in floor, beam and bars, because our scoring potential in vault is not quite as high.

GoHeels.com: How did the schedule set up this season and what meets are you looking forward to?

Galvin: It’s always exciting to step into the arena and compete, so we’re looking forward to every meet. We start off the season with three of our first

four meets in Chapel Hill. It has been several years since that has happened, but we think our fans will enjoy coming to Carmichael early and often. NC State begins the season at our place and then we go back to NC State the fol-lowing week. We then host back-to-back meets against Maryland and Pitts-burgh.

We’re especially looking forward to going up to Chicago for the Chicago Style meet. It will be our first time at that meet and it gets us close to home for both Lexi and Michelle. The club that hosts that meet is the one that Lexi competed and this meet give us more visibility in the area.

GoHeels.com: What should fans expect at Carolina home meets?Galvin: We try to create an atmosphere that is exciting and fun for families

to attend. The meet with NC State is always a good competition with lots of enthusiasm in the building. That’s also the weekend of our health fair that we host in support of the Lineberger center. We’ll have interactive activities on the concourse for children and the Sunday start time is good for families.

If fans in the area will come out to our meets, they will be enjoy a meet filled with high level of gymnastics and family entertainment.

VAULTGymnasts perform complicated vaults in different body positions, such as tucked, piked or stretched. The best vault-ers are explosive off the springboard, as well as when pushing off the table. Judges watch for proper body alignment, form, quick repulsion, the height and distance traveled, as well as the number of saltos and twists. Generally, the more saltos and twists, the higher the difficulty value of the vault. In addition, gymnasts should “stick” their landings by taking no extra steps.

UNEVEN BARSOften a crowd favorite, the uneven bars demand excel-lent upper-body strength, split-second timing and an aggressive approach. The entire routine should flow from one movement to the next without pauses, extra swings or additional sup-ports. The most daring parts of the routine are often in the high-flying release moves and dismounts. Many gymnasts also use pir-ouetting into release moves to earn a high difficulty value. Exact handstand posi-tions are expected.

BALANCE BEAMJust four inches wide, the balance beam challenges gymnasts because they must execute routines that give the impression that they are performing on the floor. The world’s best seem to “attack” the beam and are very confident while demonstrating excellent height, flexibility and power.Gymnasts must use acrobat-ic and dance movements to create high points or peaks in the exercise, consisting of two or more elements performed in a series.

FLOOR EXERCISEThe floor exercise gives gymnasts the chance to express their person-alities through their music choice and choreography. Gymnasts often get energy from the crowd and they usually welcome audience participation in clapping to the beat. Throughout the routine, the gymnast must harmoniously blend dance elements and tumbling while making versatile use of floor space, changing both the direction and level of movement.

Derek GalvinHead Coach • 33rd Yearn 2010 EAGL Coach of the Yearn 2005 EAGL Coach of the Yearn 2004 NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Yearn 2004 EAGL Coach of the Yearn 2003 NCAA Southeast Region Co-Coach of the Yearn 2002 NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Yearn 2002 EAGL Coach of the Yearn 2000 EAGL Coach of the Year

Only the third gymnastics coach in North Carolina history, Derek Galvin enters his 33rd year in Chapel Hill. Galvin, who has been at the helm of the program since it became an NCAA sport in 1982, has an overall record of 379-214-1. His programs combine the best of athletic and academic achievement every season.

Over the last 12 years, Galvin’s Carolina program has experienced an explo-sion of success. The Tar Heels have won five East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) titles since 2002, including back-to-back championships in 2010 and 2011. The Tar Heels also won league titles in 2002, 2005 and 2006.

Carolina has advanced to 12 consecutive NCAA regional appearances, which is the longest streak in school history, and has come tantalizingly close to competing in the national championships. The Tar Heels have come within one place of ad-vancing from regionals to nationals on several occasions. Most notably, Carolina came within a whisker of making the NCAA finals in 2004, placing third at the Southeast Regional, just .025 points behind the second place team. The previous year, the Tar Heels missed the necessary second-place spot by .05 points.

Galvin’s successes have been recognized with five EAGL coach of the year hon-ors and three Southeast regional coach of the year awards. Most recently, he was the 2010 EAGL Coach of the Year after leading the Tar Heels to a come-from-behind victory at the championship meet.

In the last 28 years, gymnasts coached by Galvin have been chosen for the Na-tional Association of College Gymnastics Coaches’ Scholastic All-America Gym-nastics Team 144 times. Two of Galvin’s former gymnasts – Natalie Halbach and Stacey Kaplan – have been honored as a GTE Academic All-Americas. Halbach, a 2003 graduate, was the first female student-athlete in the Atlantic Coast Confer-ence to receive the Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, the most prestigious academic award given by the NCAA. Eight Tar Heels – Kristin Aloi (Pharmacy), Lexi Cappalli (Chemistry), Emily Cornwell (Psychology and EXSS), Acacia Consentino (English and Philosophy), Elizabeth Durkac (Psychology), Michelle Ikoma (Business and EXSS), Meredith Magjuka (Business and Environmental Studies) and Janell Sargent (Psychology and EXSS). – were named to the 2013 NACGC/W national academic team, which requires a year-long or cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher through the season.

Tar Heel gymnasts have had their share of suc-cess in the arena as well. Courtney Bumpers, a 2006 graduate, achieved the ultimate individual honor in 2005 - winning floor exercise at the NCAA championships with a perfect score of 10.0. It was the second straight floor exercise national crown for Bumpers, who also earned All-America honors in 2003 with a fourth place finish on balance beam. Christine Robella earned All-America honors in 2006 on floor exercise. It was her first All-America honor and the fourth in Carolina history. Several gymnasts have won individual league honors in Galvin’s tenure. Christine Nguyen was a three-time EAGL Gymnast of the Year honoree from 2008-10. Kara Wright, one of Carolina’s top 10 all-around performers, was the 2010 EAGL Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In 2011, Morgan Evans captured the all-around title at the NCAA regional. And just last year, Elizabeth Durkac was named the league’s top gymnast at

the conference banquet held in Chapel Hill.

Those are just a few of the recent success stories that have dotted Galvin’s coach-ing resume. He has a long history of success at Carolina. In his first year as head coach in 1982, he guided the Tar Heels to a fourth place finish at the Southeast Regional. His 1985 and 1986 teams both finished third at the meet after placing first in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

In addition to UNC’s accomplishments as a team, Carolina has been represented every year at NCAA regionals by at least one individual gymnast. In 2003, Bumpers and junior Anna Wilson were the first Carolina gymnasts since 1986 to qualify for the NCAA national championships as individuals. Bumpers recorded the then-highest finish ever of any ACC or EAGL gymnast with her fourth place finish on the balance beam in the final round before achieving her championship status in the next two years on floor exercise.

In 2004, the Tar Heels had arguably the best year in school history. Galvin was named the NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the third straight season after directing the team to a 22-1 record and a second place finish in the EAGL Championships. The Tar Heels earned a regional appearance and the .955 winning percentage was the highest in school history. It was a record-breaking year in team and individual results with the Tar Heels setting school records on every event except balance beam and scoring above a 197.0 in four meets. Bum-pers, who earned the program’s third-ever 10.0 in 2003, turned in seven perfect scores on floor exercise and surpassed her previous school record on the vault and in the all-around competition. She has the school’s highest all-around total with a 39.725 and the highest vault score with a 9.975. Olivia Trusty set a record on uneven bars with a score of 9.95.

Galvin was named the EAGL Coach of the Year for the fourth time in 2005, lead-ing his team to a regular season record of 14-4-1 and the conference champion-ship. Carolina finished the year ranked 23rd in the country and tied for third place at regionals. A year later, the Tar Heels repeated as EAGL champions.

Galvin has been involved in gymnastics in various capacities throughout his life. He was a member of the Carolina men’s team before the discontinuation of the program in 1974. Staying involved in the sport, he spent four years coaching at Gymdancetics, a training center established by Fred Sanders, former coach of the Carolina men’s team. Under Galvin’s guidance, team members dominated state competition and advanced to the United States Gymnastics Federation champion-ships.

In 1978, he became director and head coach of the Triad Gymnastics Academy. The following year he accepted an administrative position with the research and consulting firm of Syllogistics, Inc., but remained active in area gymnastics. His first season as head coach of the Tar Heels was in 1982.

Galvin has made contributions to many other areas of the gymnastics community. In 1982, he was named to the NCAA Southeast Region Advisory Committee and served as committee chairman for several years, including the 2005 season. He was the gymnastics site coordinator for the 1987 United States Olympic Festival in Chapel Hill. He is an active member of the NACGC and has served as a clinician of sev-eral USAG and NCAA Y.E.S. clinics.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Galvin moved to Arlington, Va., with his family when he was 10 years old. He competed on two state champi-onship gymnastics teams under coach Jesse Meeks at Yorktown High School and graduated from Carolina with a psychology degree in 1976. Galvin and his wife, Debra, have two children. Both graduated from college in May 2003 - their son, Derek Sean, from UNC and their daughter, Ryan, from the University of Virginia. Galvin has four grandchildren - Lily (4), Annie Wise (2), Maggie (1 1/2) and Olive (four months).

Amy Smith enters her second season as Carolina’s assistant gymnastics coach and choreographer. Under her guidance, Carolina’ floor routines have become even more dynamic and crowd-pleasing.

Last season, Smith helped develop Carolina’s top two all-arounders in Elizabeth Durkac and Haley Watts. Durkac was named the EAGL co-Gymnast of the Year and Watts posted the best scores of her

career.

Smith came to Chapel Hill from UCLA, where she served on the Bruins coach-ing staff during the 2011-12 season. She got her coaching start at UCLA in 1998 as an undergraduate assistant coach under the guidance of head coach Valorie Kondos Field. From 2003-2006, Smith coached at the University of Florida where she became an established choreographer, specializing in floor exercise. During her time at Florida, Smith choreographed routines for six All-Americas.

In 2007, Smith assumed the role of assistant coach at the University of Mis-souri. She served as the balance beam coach and choreographer until 2011. Smith choreographed All-America floor exercise routines and played a key role in Missouri’s success. Smith helped coach the team to a victory at the 2010 NCAA Regional where Missouri earned its first NCAA Championship berth in the gym-nastics program’s history.

Smith returned to UCLA for the 2011-12 season and helped coach the Bruins to a third consecutive top-3 finish at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships.

As a student athlete, Smith was a UCLA team co-captain in 1996 and 1997. She led the Bruins to their first NCAA Championship in 1997 following a close runner-up finish in 1996. During her collegiate career, Smith was a three time All-America, twice on floor exercise and once on vault.
