Why is this course relevant or important? • Questioning and formative assessment are key professional skills for teachers. • Depth of understanding demands critical thinking, which is provoked by essential questioning and dialogue. • Questioning is important for both the pedagogical process and for assessment. • We need to talk: pupils’ work alone is not sufficient to understand their depth of understanding. This course will advance your understanding of: • The meaning of ‘essential questions’. • How to craft essential questions that probe, delve and uncover understanding. • How to use questioning effectively in a range of classroom situations. • How questions can help with formative assessment and planning ‘next steps’ for learning. • How to uncover misconceptions or wrong assumptions. • How to build questions into feedback and marking strategies. • Strategies to listen to pupils’ responses and ask follow up questions. Take away from the course: • Strategies to improve pupil outcomes through accurate and precise formative assessment. • Examples of essential questions from all areas of the curriculum – practical and adaptable for instant use back in school. • Techniques for effective questioning, response strategies and follow up questions. • Ways to ‘uncover’ understanding rather than ‘covering’ the curriculum. • An outline policy for questioning and formative assessment.
