Essential Questions:• How can teachers use essential questions as a vital part of formative assessment?• How can leaders use essential questions to audit the accuracy of teacher assessment?• What makes an ‘essential question’?
Why is this course relevant or important?• Questioning and formative assessment are key professional skills for teachers.• Depth of understanding demands critical thinking, which is provoked by essential questioning and dialogue.• Questioning is important for both the pedagogical process and for assessment.• We need to talk: pupils’ work alone is not sufficient to understand their depth of understanding.
This course will advance your understanding of:• The meaning of ‘essential questions’.• How to craft essential questions that probe, delve and uncover understanding.• How to use questioning effectively in a range of classroom situations.• How questions can help with formative assessment and planning ‘next steps’ for learning.• How to uncover misconceptions or wrong assumptions.• How to build questions into feedback and marking strategies.• Strategies to listen to pupils’ responses and ask follow up questions.
