The European Engineered Construction Systems Association (ECS) is a professional alliance dedica-ted to high-grade solutions for reinforced concrete construction techniques in Europe. Its spectrum ranges from active committee work to compre-hensive service activities, which include product information, application aids, information about new

developments in all areas of fastening, reinforcing and façade systems, through to the presentation of modern construction techniques. The alliance aims to promote quality within the market segment, identify methods for achieving more flexibility, safety and security in construction techniques, as well as to present a powerful and innovative sector.

The ECS has emerged from the Verein zur Förderung und Entwicklung der Befestigungs-, Bewehrungs- und Fassadentechnik e.V. (VBBF). Based in Düsseldorf, Germany, the VBBF was founded by market leaders of the branch in 2005. Following the admission of five members from other European countries, the VBBF evolved from a German alliance to a European lobby group for the industry. The now completed renaming to the ECS underlines this fact.

The ECS is the technical association for fastening, re-inforcing and façade systems. The ECS represents the interests of its members nationally/internationally and provides higher-level technical work in all major areas of reinforced concrete construction.Together with our members, we are committed to the use and maintenance of high-grade products and services, and promote the development of reinforced concrete construction techniques. With its members, the ECS currently represents an annual turnover of approximately 1.1 billion euro, which is generated by some 6,000 employees.

The ECS advises on the latest developments within the fields of fixing, reinforcing and façade systems, as well as building physics. Market analyses, data on the cons-truction industry, advancement in standards, approvals and directives, as well as trends in respect of future requirements arising from the development of structural engineering are reappraised regularly.

The latest developments in technology play a crucial role in the choice and use of fastening and reinforcing elements. In the case of fixing systems, products such as anchor channels ensure that elements are connec-ted safely; lifting anchors facilitate assembly. Practical, easy-to-install reinforcing products of the highest level of quality and safety are also available. rebending con-nectors and rebar couplers, punching shear reinforce-ment, adjustable column shoes and thermally insolating balcony slab connectors guarantee reduced costs on a construction site every day. Sound decoupling ele-ments decouple in places where doing so represents an audible advantage.

A focus of activities is advising, training and supporting users. The website of the ECS forms the main plat-form for communicating with planners, architects and engineers. Any important information is kept up-to-date and available at www.ecs-association.com. Besides general building approvals for products – divided into product groups – of our member companies, technical manuals and sample presentations for modern const-ruction techniques are also available.

The development of technical manuals for all areas co-vered by the ECS is a central task. Available in German and English, the booklet Design of Anchor Channels clearly summarises the design requirements contai-ned in various documents (for example, approvals and preliminary standard CEn/TS) and the main product characteristics are presented. The booklet is rounded off by detailed design examples. To support the use of the new design concept in non-German-speaking countries, an English version is also available.

other working aids on such topics as ‚Connecting Systems in reinforced Concrete Construction‘ (re-bar connections, rebending connections, connecting concrete elements or steel and concrete elements) are currently being drawn up.

Committed to educating, the ECS organises its own seminar programmes for users and planners, as well as for students of architecture and civil engineering to increase knowledge of modern construction techniques and the application of innovative products associated with fixing, reinforcing and façade systems. With regard to mandatory further training, the seminars are recog-nised by the various engineer chambers.

regular presentations and lectures at universities, as well as during national and international conferences are a matter of course for us.

lobbying in national/international associations and organisations is another focal point of the work of the ECS. here, active participation in Eu-ropean standardisation committees is equally as important as assisting its members in nati-onal and international approval procedures.

The ECS supports its members in quality as-surance and raises the awareness users have for the benefits of high-grade products.

The ECS advises on safe and proven fixing, reinforcing and façade systems, it presents product innovations and new mounting techniques, and it indicates trends. Activities centre on training and giving case-by-case advice to planners, architects and engineers in project planning and implementation. on top of that, the ECS partners with renowned experts involved in research and from the field to organise special seminars for planners, which cover the latest developments and topics relating to fixing, reinforcing and façade systems.

next to publications about specific products from the field of fastening and reinforcing systems, de-tailed articles have also appeared in such journals as the Betonkalender, Stahlbeton aktuell, the Bautabellen für Ingenieure und Architekten as well as the series of papers by the DAfStb and fib.

ECS members develop products that are high in quality and added value for users. Coupled with reliable servi-ces, they facilitate modern alternatives to conventional construction techniques, increase safety in construction, and thus contribute to effective construction.

The ECS assumes the task of initiating and coordinating pre-competitive research projects. here, practical imple-mentation of the results is always the focus.

The main topics of research include:
