S M Seals was established following the acquisition of the industrial sealing division of Sterling Mechanical Seals, also formerly known as Trist and Bestobell, the head office is based in the UK with sales offices worldwide.
SMS manufacture and supply spares and replacement seals for the existing Sterling, Trist and Bestobell seals and specialise in the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of an extensive range of mechanical sealing solutions for the global Power Generation Industry.
S M Seals are a member of the Power Generation Group of IMCI.
IMCI has more than 3,500 employees and 33 worldwide design, manufacturing, sales and logistic facilities.

Seal Product Information
All SMS Seal types have been specifically developed for use in turbines and pumps where silt and abrasive particles can be a problem.
Adjustment after installation for seal face loading is achieved by the use of either springs, weights or penumatic cylinders.
All SMS type seals are custom designed and are fully split for ease of installation and maintenance. The main wearing face is made from a special composite material that will regenerate mutually conforming seal faces if damaged by abrasive particles.
The SMS type seals can be adapted to be installed on either vertical or horizontal shafts.
Our seals, dependent on type, can operate at circumferential velocities up to 35 m/sec (115 ft/sec) and pressures up to 23 bar (334 p.s.i.).

Hydrostatic Feed Circuit with Filtration Unit
• Method of introducing clean filtered water directly into seal interface.
• Clean water ensures improved lubrication, cooling and also excludes abrasive particles.
• Enables higher speeds and pressures to be catered for.
• Faces are lubricated whilst turbine is running in air.
Improved lubrication reduces friction and increases wear life.

Condition Monitoring
To enable scheduled maintenance planning we can incorporate the following into our seals.
Temperature measurements at seal interface.
Electronic Wear Measurement (Remote).
Flow meter in hydrostatic feed control circuit.
Display units supplied with the above are programmablefor limits and alarms.
These systems therefore provide an excellent engineering management tool to enable condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Static Seal Product Information
The SMS Static Seal can be used as an Emergency or Maintenance Seal and can be at the customers request incorporated into any SMS seal design.
It can be activated by either Air or Water Pressures, the activation pressures are dependent upon application and control configuration.
Valves and interlocks incorporated into the control system should prevent inadvertent activation during normal machine operation.
