慶応3（1867）年7月14日、三河国渥美郡牟呂村（現豊橋市）で、伊勢神宮の外宮のお札が降っているのが見つかり、お札降りによるお祭りが行われました。民衆は、紅白の手ぬぐいや赤頭巾を身につけ、古歌をうたって、「おかげ」踊りで行進しました。　その後、吉田城下各町でお札降りによる臨時のお祭りが行われ、大勢の民衆が集まり「おかげ」踊りを乱舞し、東海道を媒体として東西へ急速に伝播することとなりました。豊橋で発祥した「ええじゃないか」は、明日に夢を求める民衆のエネルギーが熱気となって全国に伝わったものです。

What does “eejanaika” mean?On 14th July 1867, amulets from the Outer Shrine of the Ise Grand Shrine was seen falling from the sky in Atsumi-gun Muro-machi, Mikawa Province (now Toyohashi). A festival was held celebrating the gift of the amulets. The people marched on the streets, holding red and white hand towels and wearing red hoods. They sang traditional songs and danced the “okage” (gratitude for the grace of a deity). From then on, a spontaneous festival was held celebrating the gift of the amulets in every district around the Yoshida Castle. Crowds gathered and danced the “okage”. With Tokaido as its core, the news spread to everywhere in Japan rapidly. The message of “eejanaika”, which originated from Toyohashi, is to tell the nation of the people’s passion and vivacity to fulfill their hopes and dreams for the future.

　10月の第3土・日曜日に、「ええじゃないか」をメッセージテーマに取り入れ、現代の「ええじゃないかまつり」として、総おどり、ダンスコンテスト、パレカ（パレード＆カーニバル）、観光物産博覧会などの様 な々催しが全市をあげて繰り広げられます。The Eejanaika Matsuri is held on the 3rd weekend of October annually. With “eejanaika” as the main theme of the festival, the city comes alive with events such as the soodori (combined dancing festival), a dance contest, Pareca (a mix of a parade and carnival), as well as a local food fair.

Hana-shobu FestivalThe Hana-shobu (Japanese Iris) Festival signals the start of the summer. The Kamo-shobu-en Garden boasts of up to 37,000 species of Japanese iris plants which blooms beautifully in the summer and is enjoyed by the residents every year.

●❷ うめまつり　春の彩りの始まりは梅。向山緑地の梅林園には28種類約400本の梅が植栽されており､春先には「うめまつり」が開催されます。

Ume FestivalSpring begins when plum blossoms starts to bloom. The Plum Garden in Mukaiyama-ryokuchi has a total of 28 different species and 400 plum trees. The Ume (Plum) Festival is held every spring.
