American Airlines welcomes first Boeing 787 Dreamliner

American Airlines officially welcomes its first Boe-ing 787 Dreamliner. American took delivery of the airplane, a 787-8 with registration number N800AN, on January 22nd, at Boeing’s factory in Everett, Washington. American has placed firm or-ders for 42 Boeing 787 aircraft, with the right to ac-quire an additional 58. American will take delivery of both the 787-8 and 787-9 as part of the 42 firm

orders. American expects its first 787 to enter rev-enue service in the second quarter, flying domes-tically between American hubs for several weeks before being launched on international flights.

AWAS delivers one A319 on lease to new customer Bangkok Airways

AWAS announced it has agreed to lease one A319 passenger aircraft to new customer Bangkok Air-ways in Thailand. This aircraft comes from AWAS’ existing portfolio, was delivered to the airline, and will be used on Bangkok Airways’ network operat-

ing from Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand.

FLY Leasing acquires two new Airbus A321s

FLy Leasing has agreed to purchase two new Airbus A321 aircraft in a sale and leaseback transaction with a leading European airline. The first aircraft has already been delivered and the second will be delivered in the coming months. Both aircraft are on long-term leases. “FLy continues its growth tra-jectory with the acquisition of two new aircraft,” said Colm Barrington, CEO of FLy. “For the past two

more than 130 aircraft and 340 on order, said it may consider increasing its stake over time, although it was not currently intending to in-crease it.

Meanwhile, IAG is preparing detailed respons-es to a range of concerns put to it by the re-view group examining its proposed takeover of Aer Lingus on behalf of the Government. IAG will be quizzed on key issues such as Heathrow slots and airline connectivity from Ireland, as

well as IAG’s plans for jobs and investment in Aer Lingus.

The news has been received with mixed reac-tions. Some experts’ say the only way in which being bought by IAG might benefit Aer Lingus is the fact that it could purchase aircraft at a cheaper price because it would be part of a conglomerate. However, Aer Lingus has a purchasing union with Etihad that essentially works in the same way. Some believe IAG is

interested in buying the Irish airline to get its hands on the 24 take-off and landing rights it has at London’s Heathrow Airport, worth an estimated €400 million.

Evan Cullen, president of Irish Airline Pilots As-sociation, said the takeover would put money in the pockets of top managers and threaten Ireland’s economic future. The Irish govern-ment has a 25.1% share in Aer Lingus, while Ryanair has a 29.8% stake in the airline.

CAE to acquire Bombardier’s Military Avi-ation Training unit

CAE and Bombardier have signed an agreement for CAE’s acquisition of Bombardier’s Military Aviation Training business for approximately CA$19.8m. The closing of the transaction is conditional on usual conditions and regulatory approvals, and if those are obtained, closing is expected to occur during 2015. This move sig-nificantly enhances CAE’s core capabilities as a training systems integrator (TSI) globally and expands its offering into support for live flying training of future military pilots, including next-generation fighter pilots, for the Royal Canadian Air Force and its allies. Upon conclusion of this transaction, CAE will be the prime contractor re-sponsible for the NATO Flying Training in Canada (NFTC) program that produces qualified military pilots for defence customers. Bombardier’s Mili-tary Aviation Training business includes approxi-mately 200 employees supporting the NATO Fly-ing Training in Canada (NFTC) program. NFTC was launched in 2000 and utilizes more than 700,000 km² of air space at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Moose Jaw and CFB Cold Lake. In addition to classroom, computer-based, and simulator train-ing, the NFTC program delivers live flying train-

South African-based Fireblade Aviation (Pty) which manages the only Fixed Base Operation (FBO) at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport (ORT) has selected FBO One, from Am-sterdam Software, as its online management tool to run its FBO and fuel management activity. Fire-blade Aviation FBO, which became operational on September 1st 2014, is aiming to fulfil a market demand for a world-class international FBO facil-ity at South Africa’s main airport. To this end it of-fers 24 hour refuelling from a brand new on-site fuel farm, flight planning, a full concierge service to arrange ground and onward arrangements in-cluding commercial aircraft connections, aircraft detailing, apron parking, ground power units, potable water, South African landing clearance, inflight catering, an exclusive VIP lounge, a dedi-cated spa, meeting rooms, and full crew facilities. Gogo, a leading global aero communications ser-vice provider, reported that it is on track for re-cord aircraft installs in 2015. The company now has a backlog of well in excess of 1,000 commer-cial aircraft, more than half of which are expect-ed to be installed in 2015. With the large backlog in commercial aviation and the company’s cur-rent trends in business aviation, Gogo expects to install a record number of aircraft in 2015. Re-cently announced domestic regional jet installs and certain international fleet wins are expected to make up the bulk of the installs for 2015. Gogo expects to bring 500 additional commer-cial aircraft online by the end of this year, which would bring the total number of commercial aircraft equipped with its connectivity service to more than 2600. Of the new installs, around 25 percent are expected to be international aircraft. In addition to new installs, Gogo continues to upgrade previously-installed ATG systems to its next generation ATG-4 technology, which triples peak speeds to the aircraft and brings more ca-pacity to the sky. More than a third of the aircraft on which ATG was installed have been upgraded to ATG-4. Gogo expects close to half the com-mercial fleet operating in the U.S., or more than 1,000 aircraft, to be upgraded to the newer tech-nology by the end of 2015.
