The Sports Business Journal estimates that the total US domestic sports consumption and investment in 2006 amounted to a whopping $213 billion. In addition, the Sports Industry is larger than the Auto Repair and Insurance Industries. Because of the large size and scope of the SEM Industry, competition for the discretionary dollars of consumers is at an all-time high. There is only so much discretionary income available in today’s economy, therefore, the role of the sports and entertainment marketer is to find ways for consumers to spend those dollars within their organization. Finally, consumers in the twenty-first century, unlike era’s of past, have an unlimited amount of options to entertain themselves. Successfully marketers today must not only create a great sport or entertainment event but also create a successful satisfying experience for their customers. This will better ensure customers use their limited leisure time and limited discretionary dollar on their business’s event. Overview and Purpose:

The sports and entertainment industries are one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the United States.

Estimated Times

Student or Teacher Focus

Description of Activity

7:35-7:40 STUDENT Students complete a bell ringer activity by composing a Sticky Note in response to the following prompt, “List one sport or entertainment event you attended within the last month and state the cost of this activity”

Students read one another’s posts on the sticky note wall

7:40-7:42 STUDENT Students play animated voki character listening to the objectives and goals for today’s lesson

7:42-8:02 STUDENT Students work collaboratively using a Google Document researching all the different sporting and entertainment options available near our school community

8:02-8:16 TEACHER/STUDENT

Teacher reads aloud an excerpt from a Sports Marketing Book, “ Elusive Fan ”. While teachers reads aloud, students respond to the following questions using a backchannel for interactive discussion: “Which event you heard would you prefer to attend and why? How does what you heard relate to one’s leisure time and discretionary income? What actions can marketers take to better ensure consumers choose to attend their entertainment event as opposed to one of the other hundreds of options that exist?”

8:16-8:23 STUDENT Students begin composing a fake facebook page promoting one of the events they researched earlier. Students pages must describe the event (product), state the cost (price) and inform customers how to purchase tickets including the date and time of the event (place).

8:23-8:26 TEACHER/STUDENT

Teacher questions students for understanding by using a random name generator to select students to respond.
