What is Puppy Linux?

Puppy Linux is a GNU/Linux LiveCD distributiondeveloped by Barry Kauler. It's designed to befast and small. It can be run and installed even onvery old hardware (Pentium I) and it's light andportable.

The entire operating system and all theapplications are runned from the RAM (if there'senough on the PC) and this grants greatperformaces to Puppy Linux.

Even if it's possibile to install it on the Hard Drivelike the other Linux distributions, this is notnecessary, because the OS can be used from CDor USB without changing any setting on the hostPC's OS.

Burning Puppy CD with CDBurnerXP

Open CDBurnerXP from Start menu or from its desktop icon.Select Burn ISO image and click on OK

Click on the button ...A Dialog window will be opened asking you for the Puppy ISOfile that we have downloaded. Find where you have saved it,select it and confirm by clicking on OK

Insert an empty CD in your burning device and click on Burn

Right-click on the ISO file that we have downloaded andchoose Open With.. > Nero Burning ROM from the menu

Boot Puppy Linux from CD

Insert the previosly burned Puppy Linux CD to your CD/DVDRom reader and reboot your PC

After the beep of the PC if a message similar to this isshown: Press any key to boot from CD..., press a key

If nothing is shown or if the OS installed on the PC boots

After a series of command line messages, a dialog like this willbe shown on the screen, asking you to select your keyboardlayout. Use the arrow keys to scroll the list until you find yourlayout. Once you're done, press ENTER to continue

Open Menu>Setup>BootFlash install Puppy to USBThe program that we havelaunched will format the USBdrive and will make it bootable

Save all the data that are presenton the USB Drive first, becauseeverything will be erased from it!

Select USB Flash Drive from the list and click on OK. On thenext window that will appear click OK to confirm and continue

Click on OK to confirm the installation. On the next windowthat will appear, click on CD to tell the installer to copyPuppy system files directly from the LiveCD

Click on the terminal window and then press ENTER to beginthe final installation procedure

Press ENTER again to continue without erasing anything fromthe USB that we have already prepared

If we want to set Puppy to work by default with less than256MB of RAM, press ENTER. Otherwise, type in a randomletter from the keyboard and press ENTER(recommended).

Typing in a letter and pressing ENTER will set Puppy toautomatically choose the best RAM option according to theamount of RAM of the host PC

The installation is finished! Now you're ready to goanywhere with your own Puppy USB operating system in yourpocket!

The main advantage of installing Puppy to USB is that you canhave all your files and settings everywhere you are, withouthaving to carry anything else with you! Another interestingfact is that the host OS on the PCs where you will use it will notbe affected in any way. Nothing will be saved on them,preserving your privacy!
