INTRODUCTIONWelcome to Year 5! New teachers, new classrooms and the start of your journey to the pre-test next year. You will be introduced to verbal and non-verbal reasoning and Philosophy, which we loved! This year is a chance for you to enjoy even more clubs and activities and take part in plays and competitions, fixtures and challenges, that will be really fun. Our biggest tip for Year 5 is to trust your teachers, keep on top of your homework and always, always ask for help when you need it from Kere or Catherine: they are amazing!

Don’t allow yourself to get stressed about exams at Christmas and Summer: if you follow all the advice and use the resources on Firefly, you will be prepared. This is also a year where you are asked to be more independent: teachers aren’t going to be chasing you or reminding you all the time of what you need to do. Make sure you are as organised as possible and pack your own bag the night before so that YOU know what is in there! Don’t leave homework until the last minute: we tried… it doesn’t work! Most importantly, have fun; make new friends; try new things and always do your best.

MATHS

In Maths this year, you get put into 3 different sets. You cover a lot of topics in Maths and it is really fun. The pace increases and so does the difficultly. It’s not a huge amount though and the teachers will not ask you to do anything they haven’t already covered in lessons or something you should already know. Sometimes, you will get homework set on mymaths, (a maths website). You will also be introduced to Atom learning which is an excellent help with preparation for the pre-test. This will often be set over the weekend so you can learn a new topic or improve on areas that are weaker. Also, there are a few competitions you can do this year: when we were in Year 5, we went to the Pangea and Brighton College Maths competitions. Last year we won the Brighton College Maths competition (no pressure!). This competition is in teams; two boys will be picked from Year 5 and two from Year 6. Also, there is the Pangea maths competition: In this one you are not in teams: you compete as an individual.

You have two end of year assessments, a mental arithmetic and an ISEB paper. Once again, these are nothing to stress about just do the right amount of revision and you’ll be fine.

HISTORYThis year in History, you will study the Battle of Hastings. This is very interesting because William was very tactical. There is a lot to take in, but we won’t spoil the battle for you! One thing we really enjoyed about History in Year 5 was source evidence. For this, you will take evidence from a source and answer a set of questions. Also, you will sometimes compare different sources of the same topic, which show different views. My favourite one was the Bayeux tapestry. You will do a lot of interesting pieces of work on the tapestry. Also Kyla and Kere make it all really fun.

Here are some interesting resources to help you:

GEOGRAPHYThis year, you will do a lot about Settlement. This is really fun, because you can identify what kind of land the settlement is on (the site). You also learn about the kind of settlement it is.

OS Map Skills

You may have done a bit of this in Year 4, but, you do a lot more this year. For this, you have to plot points with a 4-point grid reference or a 6-point grid reference. You will also learn about the symbols used on an OS map.

Geography Projects

This year you will have projects you have to work on as a homework. The projects are:

1. Designing a carbon free futuristic city using solar power hydro-electric power and all other environmentally healthy ways of running a city;

2. Design a system where people can go to Antarctica without disrupting the wildlife.

DRAMAThis year, you will do Drama, for the first time in the Drama room, with Niyazi. The introduction to drama is really fun. The freeze frames are really interesting and you will work with a script for two terms on the Lion King, joint with music. Last year, we did Les Miserables, this year we have heard you are doing an even more exciting musical! Year 5 will be split into three groups and then will switch between Drama, Music and Art every week. This year you will be working with the script and there will be very little improvisation. Also, you are doing a musical so there will be lots of singing. There will be plenty of big parts you can perform; there isn’t just one big part, which is great to include everyone!

ADT -Y5

Art was amazing in Year 5! We got the opportunity to explore a range of different materials and use techniques that were new to us. We studied a range of projects/topics in ADT including:

Art influenced by nature; mosaics; collage; colour theory; Impressionism; mark-making; space and scale; board game design.

To do well in ADT, you need to think differently, compared to a Maths or History lesson. Try thinking completely out of the box and come up with art that expresses who you are and what you like. There are no wrong answers in Art!

We also highly recommend visiting art galleries and museums that London has to

offer. We have listed a few, below, all of which offer events and workshops for

children during school holidays.

SPORTThis year, you will do most of your sport with the Year 6s. The only one you won’t do with them is rugby. This is because there are different rules for different ages and different physicality levels.

Football

In your first term, you will do football. There are a few tournaments you can go to, for example, the Westminster tournament and St George’s Park. There will usually be 8 teams you are split into and you will do fixtures almost every Monday.

Rugby and Hockey

In the spring term, you can choose between either Rugby or Hockey. Hockey will be mixed with Year 6, but Rugby you will not be. You will not do hockey fixtures every Monday, but you will do rugby most. There is also a Merchant Taylors’ Rugby tournament.

Cricket and Athletics

In the final term, you can choose between either Cricket or Athletics. In Athletics, there is a lot of high jump, relay races and long jump. When you do Cricket, you will do either hardball or softball, depending on your skill level; there is a lot of work in the nets. Occasionally, you will play practice matches and will have a few fixtures. Also, there is a Merchant Taylors’ Cricket competition.

Swimming

For swimming, you will use the school pool and can take part in galas. You will do work on all the strokes, but primarily front crawl and backstroke.

PHILOSOPHYPhilosophy is a great time to ask all your gripping questions and debate them with others. It is very important not to interrupt others while they are talking; you can primarily only speak when you have a special ball, but if you are responding you can speak without the ball but you still have to put your hand up. There will be plenty of time to voice your ideas and in many of the lessons, you will choose what you talk about. In addition, there are plenty of myths you will talk about. This is an excellent way to develop critical thinking and think more deeply about the world around us and ask ‘big questions’.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONIn R.E., you will be taught by either Kere or Claire, depending on which class you are in. One of our highlights of R.E. was studying parables that Jesus taught people. There is an exam in R.E., but once again nothing to worry about. In addition, you will need to learn about the Ten Commandments and list them in the right order. In the first term, you will learn about Genesis and Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. In the second term, you will learn about inspirational people and will construct a PowerPoint presentation which is delivered to the class. In addition, you will learn about reconciliation, which means to ‘say sorry’ and reconcile with family. In the third term, you will do other faiths like Judaism, Islam and Buddhism.

COMPUTING

E-safety

E-safety or online safety, relates to the safe use of technology and the internet. It also covers the training of children to ensure they know how to act safely online.

E-safety is important because more than five million children in the UK have encountered cyber bullying in the past, with 1.26 million dealing with this on a daily basis.

Firefly

You will be getting your passwords for firefly and you will learn how to login. Your teachers will put up all your homework for you.

Excel and using Scratch

You will learn how to create and programme online projects using Scratch. You will also learn how to use Excel and why it is useful for money and work.

You will also take part in the Bebras competition, which you can find out about here:

FRENCH

In Year 5 French, you will have to work hard to improve your language communication skills; this year, the focus is on building Listening and Speaking skills, alongside careful Writing skills. This is done with plenty of opportunity for repetition and practice through activities like role-play, pair-work and cultural studies. You are really going to have to practise your spellings and accents, and try to be as accurate as possible when writing. We also read a lot more than in Year 4, with actual texts and reading exercises.

You will have online access to Vocab Express to support vocabulary work through independent learning. You will follow the Expo 1 textbook. Regular homework tasks will form an important part of the learning cycle.

Vocabulary topics and grammar items will be taught alongside each other. The themes will involve basic self-presentation, family and home-life.

Here is exactly what you will be studying:

ENGLISH

By the beginning of Year 5, you should be able to read aloud and be able to understand a wider range of poetry and books; are you reading as much as you can? You should also be able to read most words well and be able to work out how to pronounce unfamiliar written words.

You will do some comprehensions that will prepare you for exams and spend a lot of time improving your speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. There are of course a lot of really great books that we read during the year (like ‘Cosmic’) and when the Library is finished, you are going to have even more opportunity to explore new fiction and non-fiction titles. Our biggest tip for improving your vocabulary is to

start reading more non-fiction. We really love reading ‘How it works’ and ‘Junior the Week’.

Clubs Hackers club;

Table tennis; Hockey club; Chess; Swimming club; Senior choir; Chamber choir; Music Theory; M tech; Art scholarship by invitation; Mandarin; Rock band ; ADT club; Historical Fiction Club.

There is so much on offer, but make sure you choose something that you are fascinated with and don’t overload yourself with too much!

We enjoyed Senior Choir and Chamber Choir. Chess is also good!

PSHEE

We really enjoyed our PSHEE lessons last year. We like them because they are so different from regular lessons. We really got the chance to give our opinion about a range of topics and we learnt a lot about ourselves too. It is a chance for us to talk about sometimes difficult subjects and the best thing is that nobody judges each other, make sure that you approach it in the same way!

Here is what we have studied:

Term 1: Being Me in My World

Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

Term 4: Healthy Me

Term 5: Relationships

Term 6: Changing Me

DIGITAL LITERACY

Boys in Year 5 need to be ready to really push themselves digitally, there are so many opportunities in school to improve your skills using a range of technology – use them! First of all, make sure you are an expert at using Firefly – on your own! This is really going to help you organise yourself. In Year 5, we learn about how to be safe online and about how to select relevant sources from the internet; this is on almost every subject. We also have to communicate even more effectively to make technology work for us in a range of subjects, such as science and when doing project work in History. Using different apps and websites can be confusing because there are so many, but selecting the most useful ones can also be fun. It is important for you to realise that most subjects teach us digital literacy in one way or another and hopefully you will be able to navigate the online world sensibly and successfully. You will definitely need it for your future careers!

You should have lots of fun in Year 5, but also do a decent amount of work to prepare for Year 6. You will all get lots of merits if you put top effort into your work.
